When Baltimore Homicide Detective Lisa Swanson and her partner Dee Quarter are called to investigate the murder of Ernest Juarez, Lisa meets wheelchair bound Jake Jenson, a man determined to find his best friend’s killer at all costs. Jake is instantly attracted to the standoffish Lisa yet can’t understand why Lisa keeps him at arm’s length.
What Jake feels is resistance toward him, is really Lisa’s distrust of men caused by a previous relationship centered on domestic violence. Lisa desperately searches for Ernest’s killer while fighting her feelings for Jake and trying to mend the pain from her past.
Jake just might be the man of Lisa’s dreams, but will she let shame and fear stand in the way of a new love?
Stacy-Deanne (pronounced Dee-Anne) is an award-winning and bestselling novelist of contemporary romance, romantic suspense, and women's fiction novels.
Her work includes Everlasting, Melody, Bruised, and Captivated. Stacy is a 2011 and 2012 African-American Literary Award nominee.
It's a good book that is interesting, entertaining and readable. There was a murder, or murders to be more precise and there were some sexual innuendos between the main character, Lisa, a detective and Jake, a close friend of a man who was murdered. They weren't the most likeable of characters, and there wasn't anything romantic that I could see. A good murder mystery and an enjoyable read.
Bruised, the first book in the Bruised series, revolves around a murder investigation and the lead detectives. Lisa Swanson and Dee Quarter are determined to find the killer. Lisa meets Jake Jenson and the attraction is apparent as she questions Jake about the events leading up to his discovery of his best friend’s body. Lisa’s main goal is to find the killer and feels Jake is a handsome distraction she does not need or want. His interference with the investigation leads the detectives to question his innocence.
At the start, readers can sense the physical awareness between Jake and Lisa; however, Jake thinks Lisa is hesitant to pursue a relationship because of his disability. In addition, the duo has secrets that continue to influence their actions and impact their budding romance. Lisa is afraid to risk her heart and once she discovers the events that led to his disability, she reinforces her decision to push him away. She refuses to see that the commonalities she shares with Jake could eventually put her on the road to healing and true love.
The storyline is interesting in that it involves two souls realizing the love they have for each other could heal past wounds. Each of these characters has flaws and while one recognizes the need to eliminate the flaws and reach out for love, the other is hard-pressed to let past hurts go and believes true happiness and love are unattainable.
Readers will get an in depth view of Lisa and Jake’s personalities as the author does a good job with their development. Readers will also see the couple’s struggle to heal and find their way to each other. There are parts in this book in which the heroine is very indecisive and allows her past to cloud her judgment. She sometimes comes across as whiny and persistent in finding a reason to dislike the hero.
This storyline also deals with Jake’s struggle to find forgiveness for a bad decision that resulted in his disability and how he sometimes uses that disability as a shield of protection. However, there are a few parts that readers may find unrealistic but, in the end, the structure of the storyline remains intact.
Overall, Bruised is a sweet romance of two people overcoming past struggles to find love. Please note, there is no sex in this story.
*A review copy of this book was given to me by the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.*

The Good: Bruised is a romantic "who-dunnit" style mystery/suspense story by author Stacy-Deanne. That said, I feel that it's only fair that I separate this book in two categories: mystery and romance. As a mystery, Bruised was entertaining and had me stumped as to who the killer was for a good portion of the book. As far as the characters, kudos for creating a capable hero that wasn't diminished in any way for being in a wheelchair. The fact that he was handicapped added color and depth to the story and was well done. The story of how Jake lost the use of his legs worked for me as well. This was very powerful to me and showed the hero as a real person with very real flaws. Enough time had past since his injury for it not to be the biggest issue in the book, but how it happened was important to the story and I think played out well. I also liked how the author touched upon how Jake felt that his best friend's character was being dragged through the mud, even as he learned that his not-so-perfect friend was less perfect than he realized. Another plus in my book?
The Bad & Ugly: As a romance this story didn't work for me. It wasn't believable at all and seemed to come out of no where. I get that there was an attraction, but it didn't play out naturally in my opinion and seemed forced. I would have preferred growing attraction as they solved the murder with an ending that hinted at more. Jake's character at times was annoying beyond belief and the idea of him tagging along and questioning leads was just silly to me. Another problem -the character of Lisa. I get she had bad things happen to her as an adult and during her youth. I get it. But I just didn't care for her that much, not when it came to her and the budding relationship with Jake. But then this could be due to my disbelief in the relationship between these two...
The Bottom Line: I wish the author had taken the romance away or at least muted it more so that it was very minor to the mystery. The romance I just didn't feel at all, it was too rushed and I couldn't understand what Jake was seeing in Lisa or what she saw in him. The mystery was good and could have been even better if it were more of the focus.
For the romance portion of the book I'm giving this two stars. For the mystery three stars. That should make this a two and a half star read, but I feel that rating does this book an injustice. I give Bruised a solid three stars because despite my opinions about the romance, it isn't a bad story. In fact, there's a second book coming and I look forward to it and seeing what develops. Hopefully there will be a better balance as we get to know the characters a bit better. Ultimately, I would recommend this book.
This is not my first Stacy-Deanne read, and certainly won't be my last. Bruised is a story that deals with multiple themes (as does every Stacy-Deanne story): domestic abuse, alcoholism, forgiveness and second chances, and learning to live with the choices and decisions you make in life, oh yeah and a murder mystery. WHEW!!! This is some deep shit, and Stacy has yet to disappoint me.
Lisa Swanson is a Baltimore, MD detective with a massive chip on a shoulder, and Jake Jenson is a wheelchair-bound chef on a mission to find out who killed his best friend. These two butt heads almost instantly, but they also recognize that instant spark of attraction. Couple this with Lisa trying to do her job by solving the crime while still coming to terms with her personal demons, and you've got some really good drama here. Jake also has a story behind his disability, and man...bust out the waterworks!
Stacy-Deanne is a very good storyteller, and I highly recommend this story. So why did I only give it 4 stars? It was too short for my liking. I wanted to see more development of the relationship between Lisa and Jake. I felt like their relationship was secondary to the mystery. Sue me, I'm a diehard romantic...
Worst book ever. reasons; 1. The plot was rushed, making everything else seem unbelievable and stupid, 2. Character relationship was unreal I don't know anyone who is treated the way they treat each other and still falls in love within two days (note I said falls in love, it was not "love at first sight") 3. The main male character should have been arrested by the female cop everytime they meet for interfering in a police investigation 4. The main female character was an unbelievable cop, she goes to suspects for advice on where to take the investigation??? and she never actually investigated the main male character despite stating he was the main suspect numerous times and accusing him frequently.
The only plus side to this book was how short it was or I would not have finished it, as it is it took me 1.5 hrs to completely read, even going back several times because I was sure I had misread something (i didn't) or misinterpreted something (i hadn't) because the characters were making no sense.
i wanted to like this book because I liked the premise: disabled man falls in love with detective. There are very few books with disabled characters so I was excited to read this book. I only gave the book 2 stars because the book is too short and the plot is repetitive and the characters are underdeveloped. I didn't like the female character, Lisa. I know she had a traumatic history, but she put Jake thru so many changes I didn't get why he was falling for her, some of the things she said to him was down right cruel! Plus they barely spent any time together so exactly when did he fall in love? The mystery elements in the story were interesting but again, since book was so short, it felt like a bunch of ideas thrown together rather than well developed subplots. The story ends abruptly so I'm guessing there's a sequel but I won't be buying any more books in this series
Read to 17% (Chapters one to three) AAAAAh! I give up. I DISBELIEVE so bad.
So much hope with a mixed race couple and one with disability, but no, nope, nada, never. I can see one warning off of a person during a "cozy mystery" but the line is crossed so, so hard into "interfering with an investigation" when the (male) romantic interest of the (female) police officer goes to the first suspect and harasses her AT THE SUSPECT'S WORK and the police officer arrives to the woman shouting at the man "I said get out!" .... and she repeats it Three Times before the cop can get to the room. This is chapter two start.
Then the cop proceeds to tell the suspect how the murder occurred (which is fairly horrific and should not be public knowledge, especially during the initial parts of an investigation).
I did a quick jump to the end chapter to see if anything was redeemable. Nope - guy is still mangling the cop's job and the cop is breaking basic, basic rules.
Minor editorial note Duplicate word issues (example from chapter 5) He put his handkerchief away. "Ask away." - adjust so only one "away" in a paragraph
I came across this 2014 release and thought I would give it a read. Homicide Detectives Lisa Swanson and her partner Dee Quarter arrive at the victim’s house with a man already there. He is Jake Jensen, he called it in and is also attracted to Detective Swanson. Both of them put him off as they work the case and get him to answer questions about why is there and how he knows the victim. Here is when Jake begins to make himself a pain by showing up at the same place they do when interviewing different people. At first, it is cute but then annoying. He does tell Swanson he is attracted to her and as much as she puts him off she wants to be with him but can’t. A story that is looking for a killer and you are surprised when it is revealed. Also deals with alcoholism and physical abuse by a boyfriend or lover which is touched on. Overall a good book I liked the end with the two of them getting or working towards help. I continued to wait for more as the story and relationship developed between Lisa and Jake. However, it was missing something for me. The mystery went along well. Then all of a sudden it ended. It was like the author ran out of reasons to write or just wanted the story to end.
I liked Jake because he did not allow his disability to define who he was. This, however, was the opposite for Lisa. Lisa lived her past and wore it like a wool sweater in the summer time. It made her hard to relate to. She worked day end and day out to defend others but failed to defend herself even in the court of law. Then she had her enablers that catered to her behavior. I was happy that Jake expected more from her and demanded respect.
Overall, I still wondered how their relationship ended or developed. I would recommend it to my reading friends. Happy reading!
For "Bruised" to be a mystery, it was quite entertaining. The typical who-done-it was suspenseful. I kept wanting to read to see if I guessed correctly. I had (with a very slight twist)! The chemistry between Lisa and Jake was interesting. Whenever they had dialogue, Jake was hilarious. He was such a busy body. Why Lisa reported her findings to him and allowed him to help during the investigative period was out of the ordinary. It seemed as if a few scenes were missing for Lisa to have an epiphany which led to the ending.
Detectives Dee Quarter and Lisa Swanson are called to solve a murder, and they meet Jake Jenson, who happens to be in a wheelchair. Jake is instantly attracted to Lisa, but her past, as well as the fact he knew the victim is keeping her at arms length.
Truthfully, both of the main characters had to grow on me, because it seemed like they were not a really good match for each other. And Jake's character was just so irritating and annoying. It did end up being an enjoyable read.

This is a great story to read if you enjoy suspense. The characters are strong and thoughtful. There is plenty of drama but very little romance. But the plot more than made up for that. The author is an quite good at blending the drama and suspense. There is one thing that would have made this story more appealing that is the development of romance between the main characters. This is a great start of a series.
I was loving this book loving all the ups and downs even when I in new who the killer was ( It was so obvious)What I don't understand is the lack of sex. I know women who have been in abusive relationships and they are quick to have sex. It made it seem that she wasn't attracted to him and her lashing out was childish. I thought I had found a new author to read, but with this ending not so much
I normally refuse to read mysteries or romances written by or about women of color. I was hoping that Bruised would change my view. It didn't. The heroine was as crass, judgemental, and crazy as all the other ghetto heroines. The idea was good but the actuality came up way short. I'm so disappointed, but sadly not surprised.
Female police officer Lisa, and Jake, who is wheelchair bound. Meeting was from his best friend Ernest brutal murder. This covers an interracial romance, and the hesitation on Lisa part to be in any romance. Coming from abuse which is heavily mentioned in this story. Overall a good start to the series, with love and healing of those issues.
I stuck it out but come on. What was there to love about either of them. He was arrogant, clueless and stubborn. She was bitchy, mean and hopeless. Supposed feelings between them were unbelievable and childish. Not a fan of gratuitous profanity. Do not waste time reading this one.
A good read that keeps your interest and keeps you turning the pages. The characters are easy to get to know, intriguing and enjoyable. The story has suspense, intrigue and romance that builds with every turn of the page. A great summer read to add to your reading list.

This book may hit home for a lot of women who have been in Lisa’s situation. Everyone handles trauma differently but she was letting it rule her life. Jake was tenacious and made her take a good look at herself. I’ll admit was a little disappointed didn’t get to see any wheelchair action.

First, this is a short story, Lisa is the detective, Jake is a suspect but in the reading Jake seems like he is the detective, now Lisa has been abused before but Jake, after meeting Lisa he is now interested in her, Jake friend got killed and now the story begins, this is supposed to be mystery/love story but who is really the detective
This story starts out with a detective investigating a murder and the best friend of the murder victim getting in the way . I love how their relationship went from them bumping heads to them bumping in the sheets ! I’m now interested in book two!
Too much dialogue can detract from the characterization and the story. We enter the story with the introduction to the h having a idiotic banter with a man in a wheelchair. It gives us not tone or setting or direction in which we are being led.
Very interesting thriller. Couldn't read it fast enough. Whenever I wanted to put it down, something would catch my eye and I would read on. I will be starting the next book in the series soon.
Lisa and Jake didn't go on any dates. There was no relationship to develop from. She never gave him a chance to see if they had a chance to make it as a couple. They had maybe a couple of kissing episodes that never had a chance to go anywhere.
I think I read this in two hours. All the characters are a mess right along with the plotline. Not one character in here is either believable or convinced you they are adults working on a homicide case. I cant even give this an A for effort. More like an F for time wasted.
I thought it was the dr when he 1st came to talk but then I couldn’t figure if it was him or not but to know it was both of them is crazy 😜 but I can’t wait to see what’s next 🤔
I have to admit that I liked the storyline and I liked Jake's character but there was little character development, everyone was throwing tantrums, the killers were obvious, and the killing by the killer was highly unlikely. Not impressed .
Uma narrativa policial que nos mostra como relacionamentos abusivos não escolhem classe social, profissão, ou etnia. Um bom texto para discutir questões sérias ao mesmo tempo em que crimes são solucionados e criminosos são presos.
