The Accidental Summoning

Rate this book
Things can’t get much worse for Drew Phillips. Being a broke uni student who is still being harassed by his high school bully, he doesn't have many plans for his evening at home. In an effort to save money, he tries his hand at making a recipe for chicken noodle soup from his Grammy’s old cookbook. Somehow, he ends up with a demon in his kitchen instead of dinner.

Zach is not your typical demon. There’s no red skin, no horns, and no evil plans of murder and mayhem. Drew finds himself drawn to the tall, flirty, and oddly sweet demon, which gets even more complicated when he learns that he’s the one who needs to discover the spell to send Zach back.

Between Googling local wizards, mastering magic, wrangling demon kitties, and drinking as many double-shot peppermint mochas as he can, Drew will need to decide if ‘losing his virginity to a demon’ is something he wants on his bucket list.

Oh, and he might need to save Zach’s soul while he’s at it.

THE MC GIVES HEAD AND THEN THROWS UP BECAUSE THE CONSISTENCY OF CUM IS KINDA GROSS AND ✨TEXTUREY✨ AND LIKE, VALID BESTIES, valid....... i see u

Cum in books:

Cum in real life:

This book was all over the shop for me.

STRONG ASS START, like hello, summoning a MEGA HOT demon into your kitchen whilst trying to make chicken soup from a recipe book that turns out to be a spell book....????
SUCH A CUTE AND COOL IDEA AND THE WRITING IS GOOD but for me, the content just felt kinda whateverrrrrrrrr?

Lack of tension, lack of drama, lack of mystery, everything becomes out in the open very quickly, sometimes the plot was cringey, MC's got together and got gushy pretty quick... It just lacked some entertainment value overall???

The scene of him throwing up his lunch after swallowing cum was a highlight for me, and there's definitely some super cute and funny moments mixed through this book, you just sometimes have to sift through the cringe to get to those moments?

I think this was still nice.

But I hate the petname "sweetness" almost as much as I hate "sweetheart"....

Well, that is finally over. Seriously, for a book that is 200 pages, I feel it took me forever to finish it.

It started good, I was actually having a good time even if the humour was a bit over the top, but somehow it just went downhill, like I feel that happened. The potential was there to create tension and drama, but Drew and Zach got together in the first 10%, then we have a random, very anticlimactic revelation of how Zach is not really a demon, and surprise, surprise, Drew is the only one who can help him, throw in a weird and out of the blue subplot of Drew’s former bully being in love with him plus a thousand times the word “sweetness” as a pet name and I was done.

By the time the book ended, I was left with more questions than answers, like how the whole paranormal/master wizard thing works? What explanation did they give to the police? Is Zach going to age now that he is earthbound? Is Drew 20 but doing an MBA?

In the author’s note, the author mentions Harry Potter and how she removed all the references to it due to JKR being a bigot, and then she said she wrote this originally as fanfic. Is this supposed to be Harry Potter fanfiction? Because to me it read like Soul Eater Winn and Danny’s fanfic.

Very close to DNF for me. I was really bored.

A lot of problems with this book.

A weird evolution of the MCs' behavior, especially at the beginning, as they seem to sometimes evolve non naturally but rather radically from one chapter to the next.
A lot of one-dimensional characters.
Edward's behavior doesn't make any sense.

Some chapters were dragging and others were rushed (like end of chapter 11 which should have been much more detailed).

Some inconsistencies in the plot. How did Oberon manage to come without being summoned for example?

The sex scenes were very technical, long and boring, with sometimes weird details.

Didn't find anything really funny in this book, contrary to other reviews.

The writing style is acceptable, but some dialogues felt forced.

I took off an additional star for the Harry Potter references that are not acceptable in a LGBTQ romance.

The blurb and the first chapter sounded promising, but this was overall a deception.

dnfed almost immediately after the demon from hell has to educate this white guy that swastikas were co-opted from religious symbols from various cultures. also? it's clear that the book is condemning starving yourself but every time zach (the demon btw) describes how hot drew is he ALWAYS mentions how fucking emaciated he is and its turning me off as someone with reoccurring eating issues like i use these books for escapism i dont want to read abt white guys being educated on general knowledge and struggling with eating.

^^ edit i said this and then unfortunately finished it hours later after a very bad run in with the demons in my mind. it did not get better tbh the plot is so insipid and if the book didn't take itself seriously it would be camp but instead it's just mind numbing. i skimmed many high action parts and zach transforming int a cat and back into a human in front of people and their reactions annoyed me for some reason. if i enjoyed this book i would have CHEERED at the short stories that function like an extended epilogue but i didn't so i skimmed and since mama truly didnt raise a quitter i even persevered after the author just said they each downed a glass of expensive bourbon and like a shot 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀 and he has no food in his stomach????? lets all be soo fucking fr rn.....also i found out this used to be hp fanfic. i think the author removing every single hp mention after finding out jkrs crimes is bare minimum i respect it nonetheless but like. what have i said abt bad fanfic and getting published..(its never going to be good bc good fanfic authors know how intrinsic the fan part of the fiction is to the story).. right.

ALSO. this book takes itself WAYYYYYYYYY too seriously for the concept that it is. broke college student accidentally summons demon when trying to make chicken noodle soup? finds out he's an incredibly powerful witch? brother thats the concept for the SILLIEST book ever!!! instead we get like a serious plot and these characters who again are WAYYYYYY toooo serious. some of the jokes beforehand had me thinking this was going to be a fun romp like how to flirt w a hellhound but then it got so annoying so fast. the funniest part of this book was when drew is trying to give zach a blowjob and finds out he's bad at head because his jaw is too small to fit the dick without having it scrape his molars...i personally have a story abt teeth and head and it just reminded me of the fun of that compared to anything else and even then the next few lines made me bored all over again...

so just PSA if youre going to have a ridiculous concept at the VERY least be self aware and poke fun at it! no one reading this is expecting serious literature!!!!! there's so much stuff in here where im like EYEROLLLLLLLL i didn't vibe with it so i reread one of my faves and then i came back and i just got sooooooo tired of it. BRING BACK FUN!!!!!!!!

This wonderful pnr romance accidentally fell into my lap when an mm romance author friend, obsessed with food and peens and any book combining those things, rec'd it to me to check out - I'm SO glad I did! Surprisingly sweet, funny, good plot, steamy & saucy, and with amazing characters & storylines, this book blew me away. The epilogue alone had me laughing so hard, also very touching, all the feels. Can't wait to read more in this no-longer-new-to-me author's world.

I love ‘accidentally summoning a demon’ books! Drew was hungry so he used an old cookbook to make chicken soup. Instead, he managed to summon Zachariel, a demon (sort of). Since Drew summoned Zach, they are tethered together (can’t be more than 10 feet apart). When in school or with Drew’s friends, Zach takes the form of a cat. Drew Googles wizards and goes to visit one. Turns out he’s a real wizard and helps Drew harness his magic.

Zach tells Drew his story of being an unintentional fallen angel and Drew vows to help release him from his ‘curse’.

There’s a bit of ‘unintentional summoning’, plenty of sexy times and a bit of revenge.

Will read more in the series. Minus 1 star for boring/PC smut scenes. I don't generally read them much anyway but these were just awkward.

Drew Phillips (19), university student attending Vancouver Island University pursuing his Masters of Business Administration.
Zachariel (1200+), summoned demon with a complicated situation.

This story was adorable! I was looking for something cute, fun, quick, and low-angst and this delivered in spades. I had seen the writing prompt that inspired this story and I enjoyed the execution of it so very much. I adored the snarky banter, and caretaking Zach demonstrated toward Drew as well as the chemistry that was evident between them.

The solution of Zach taking on the form of a cat named Noodle to get around the fact that he and Drew couldn't be more than ten feet apart as a result of the summoning was inspired. The catnip toy scene was adorable and such a fun way to .

I thought the explanation for Drew's magic was interesting and I was fully behind and engaged in his exploration of it. I enjoyed the character of Grand Master Kensington and his magic lessons and found myself curious to learn more about how magic fit in the world the author created. There were some missed opportunities to add more depth to the story, but ultimately it worked well.

This definitely ends with a HEA for the couple, but there is potential here to make this a series following Drew and his magical learning curse, though nothing in the book indicates that that will be the case, it just feels like it will be a gigantic waste of the reveal concerning if this is the end of the line for them - though I might feel differently if I had been able to read the epilogue...

There is supposed to be a free short story about their first anniversary, unfortunately, I can't comment on it because I cannot figure out how to get it - this is honestly my biggest pet peeve as a reader. I clicked the link but can't navigate the internet on my Kindle so had to switch over to my phone, sign up for the newsletter, check my e-mail inbox, check my spam, confirm my email address and... nothing (not even in my spam).
I wish authors would cease these tactics to get subscribers to their newsletters, I don't understand the point and I'm honestly over it.

When it comes to demon books, I can't get enough, so I jumped at the chance to read an ARC of The Accidental Summoning. I'd seen the tweet prompt that this book is based on and thought it would make a great story and Acres really delivered.

Drew is a broke student, and he's struggling. He tries to make chicken noodle soup one night and accidentally summons Zach. Zach is the world's worst demon in that he's sweet, funny, and not at all evil. And of course, he's sexy as sin. Drew needs to quickly learn how to master the magic that runs in his lineage so he can discover the spell to return Zach to Hell. But after getting to know him, does he really want to?

This book is absolutely hilarious. I laughed so damn hard, especially at the catnip scene, and the banter between Drew and Zach is next level. It's also sexy, and the smut is hot, but I love that it's also realistic.

I'm really hoping that this book turns into a series as there is so much potential here. I would love to read more about Drew and Zach, as well as some of the other characters we're introduced to.

If you enjoy demon books, paranormal books, or urban fantasy books, I highly recommend The Accidental Summoning.

Who could have guessed that the desire to cook chicken noodle soup could turn into a life-changing decision?Poor Drew - no soup for him, but instead a deliciously tempting demon? Not a bad barter, in my opinion, especially when the unexpectedly summoned guest into his kitchen comes with a well-padded credit card. After all - if you are a broke student who can't cook, but you can summon a demon who turns out to be more than what's on the surface, why not enjoy the benefits? And on top of that, Drew learned that he was a pretty strong magic user to be able to perform a successful summoning. So much happened just because he was hungry and wanted to eat. This was one of the lightest and funniest stories I've read in the last few months. It's an insta love, opposites attract with many laugh out loud moments.
So after the kitchen disaster Drew was saddled with a really sexy and dangerous companion which quickly turned into a candy sweet love story. Hip, hip hurrah for Incle Google who helped him to find the local coven of magical users so after a crash course how to freely access the magic stored in him, Drew managed to help his beau get rid of his Hell's shackles, stop a demonic invasion on his campus and get his HEA. Good job, Drew - you made me laugh so much.

Just love the lore!

This is my kind of ridiculous. Drew's an unaware, untrained witch who discovers magic is real and he's plugged into it after he somehow summons a "demon" while trying to make chicken soup. The antics and plot stay golden from then out. Zach, the "demon," is actually an angel pulled down from heaven eons ago by a rebelling angel who traps Zach in hell with him after he (Oberon) is expelled from heaven. As a cat mom, I adore all the moments of Zach morphed into Noodle, a hellaciously antisocial cat, to stay close to Drew since the summoned cannot be more than 10 feet from their summoner until released or returns from the summons. Side characters like Simon and Kensington are just delightful. The werecat and it happened again (Drew summoning when trying to follow a recipe and cook) moments were hilarious to me.

It's not a perfect story, though. As much as I loved so much of it, the quick to fall in love aspect and use of "sweetness" as a term of endearment were elements that got old quick. I enjoyed the early moments and most of the relationship, but it's the wacky plot ideas that win the day for me. This author is definitely on my radar to aim to read everything they write.

I had no clue what to expect from this book. All I knew was the blurb made me snort so hard I had to download it. Turns out this book was EXACTLY what I needed.

Guyyyyyyssssss this book was hilarious!! Zach and Drew’s banter kept me in stitches! Poor Drew needs to be permanently banned from the kitchen. The only thing he can cook up is trouble. Zach may be the King of Petty, but he is a TERRIBLE demon 😜 Noodles…omg Noodles. I simply cannot live without him. The catnip had me IN TEARS.

I also love how realistic the author made the spice. Drew is completely new to s3ggs. Instead of making him magically perfect with no gag reflex, the author gave him space to be awkward, learn what he does and doesn’t like, and make mistakes. That said, this book isn’t really all that heavy on the spice. It has the perfect ratio IMHO.

Drew’s friends kind of made me grumpy, for the fact that they allow his bully to remain a part of the group. Because Drew is a sweet baby love who deserves to only be surrounded by love and good things ❤️

This book was freaking amazing! I laughed more with this book than I think any book I've ever read. But I also swooned, sweat, and had heart palpitations!

Drew accidentally summoned Zach. Drew had no idea he had magic. Zach was just along for the ride. There were so many hilarious moments. There were steamy moments as well as Drew and Zach dealt with their attraction to one another. Then Drew wanted to learn about his magic and a way to send Zach back. Through all of this Zach and Drew got closer. Major secrets were revealed. Action ensued. It was great. This book was everything.

Loved it!!

This was recommended in a FB group and was blown away by how right the person was.
It is funny, witty, with flashes of snark between Drew and Zach. It's also sweet, with a teensy bit of some tough situations (from Drew's childhood and his lack of funds). Their relationship was so much fun to follow, though Drew really needed to believe in himself more. The author also has a hilarious bonus short via Bookfunnel, and the even better news is that we may get a sequel!!!

Very fluffy and sweet and GOOD.

While I don’t think it would’ve hurt anything for Drew to be over 20, I appreciate that he was in college and not still a child. I also appreciate the on page nod to the fact that it definitely could’ve been looked at that way.

This was adorable. It was cute and sweet and a fun little read. I loved the fluff and the feels. I love stories like this, and I’m glad I picked it up!

4.25/5. It had some parts that came off a little weird, but it was still great.

Great book

This is a wonderful book full of magic and love. I loved Zach and his back story but the true hero of this book to me is Drew. I loved his adorkableness, his willingness to accept himself and his magic while discovering his sexuality and falling in love was just beautiful to read. I also have to mention Noodle as he is simply adorable. This book is sweet, funny with an epic magical battle plus excellent steamy scenes. Highly recommended to everyone. Addison is a new to me author and I’m looking forward to reading more.

It’s Amusing

The concept is interesting, and the developing storyline did a good job pulling this reader in. Unfortunately, the potential was never realized and what could have been a cute paranormal romance, felt more like a composite narrative, assembled from similar but unconnected parts packed into a book. The major battle near the end was definitely a “jump the shark” moment. The book ends with a sigh and maybe, a whimper.

A fun cute read, with delicious consensual scenes sprinkled in and cozy “Legends and Lattes” vibes.

I wish we’d seen more of both characters interacting with their world outside their relationship with each other (felt a bit 2D) but the banter and demon kitty shennanigans and gentle joy was too lovely not to finish the book with a grin on my face.

I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on the author’s next adventures, there’s fabulous style and skills evolving here 👀🍿📚

not too bad at all

This one was better than I expected!!! Poor Drew has no idea magic exists let alone that he has it in spades…summoning a demon while trying to make chicken noodle soup was a all new to me summoning method but it brought Zach to Drew and they are so sweet together.

Mild heat and 3rd person POV.

worth the read

Loved! I love the type of books that give you the perfect amount of description where you forget you’re reading and just picture it like a movie in your head. Well done. Can’t wait for the next one. :) I’m going to assume every cat I see is a werecat now though haha

Fun book!

Oh my gosh this book was so much fun. Drew didn't know he was a witch until he summoned a demon. But Zach isn't your typical demon. I really enjoyed the mystery around Zach and how Drew was able to help him out. I loved it when Zach turned into a cat. The plot was fast paced and I liked the world building. Hopefully we will get more Drew and Zach stories soon.

DNF @ 16%.

While I’m Not a Fan TM of pop culture references, I could forgive the Dodgeball reference. But a Harry Potter reference in a queer romance in 2024? That’s gonna be a ‘no’ for me.

A shame, because this was cute and I was enjoying it.

Accidently Adorable!

The love story here is so perfect, but the kitty (who doesn't have an addiction and can stop any time) steals the show! The possessive vibes are sweet and don't venture into red flag territory.

3.5 rounded up because of enough pop culture references to keep me chuckling while at the same time being a cute angel/demon mm rom com while also managing to avoid much in the way of any religion. Fun read.
