The title says it all. I've read other similar books that were overwhelming in their requirements. This is a good place to start because it isn't an "all or nothing" approach. Milk and most fruits are permitted. I have to admit I skimmed over most of the recipes to get to the dessert section since that's the hardest place for us to say no to sugar. Looking forward to trying some of their alternatives. My one quibble is that a few of the recipes require unusual ingredients. I don't think healthy eating should be complicated. Especially for beginners. 😉
I've recently come to realise I have a problem with sugar - in that I am eating too much to my detriment. So I've had a look around at a few "no sugar" type books and this is the first one I've actually really liked. This isn't a "never eat sugar again!" Type book, in fact it even mentions how sugar is an inevitable part of our daily lives in one form or another. The book is divided into two parts, one discussing the idea of having a sugar detox to break the addictive craving cycle and the second part listing recipes for every meal and snack.
I really like the way this book isn't in your face about the evils of sugar, it states facts that I know to be true from other research without any crazy health claims to push its agenda. However the part I liked most was this book actually offered suggestions of things to do when a sugar craving hits (that doesn't involve heading to the nearest shop and buying 1000 supplements). The advice offered was practical and obtainable.
I read every bit of first part before the recipes but I have to say that when I got to the part where she was concerned about using fresh lemon juice that pretty much did it for me. Yes I know that some fruits have more natural sugar than others but seriously.....lemons?
What I love most about Sugar Detox for Beginners is that there is no shortage of handy tricks and tips. Considering sugar is as addictive as caffeine, nicotine or alcohol, it is important to know what to do to beat sugar cravings, what foods to avoid and enjoy, how best to shop, and what to do when you’re celebrating, travelling or are in “company”. All of this – and much more – is covered to ensure your success.
Both of these titles stand out to me because they are wonderful if a meal plan is what you’re after, but they’re also ideal if you’d just like to bring an extra boost of health to your regular weekly meals. Personally, I have been looking to Power Foods Cookbook and Sugar Detox for Beginners for some weekday inspiration and to help me bring a bit more balance to my mealtimes. My shopping cart is slowly being filled with more kale and quinoa and fewer cookies and ice cream, gradually transitioning to healthier, happier, more powerful food.
When I started reading Sugar Detox for Beginners, I thought (perhaps naively) that it was about giving up the kind of sugar you find in cookies, cake and processed foods. Much to my surprise, the detox covers natural sugars as well - the sugar found naturally in fruit, honey, etc. Whoa! If I can't eat that fresh, yummy chocolate chip cookie from the container my bake-crazed co-worker set out in the break room, you're saying I must also take caution with a naked apple from God's green earth?!
The book is enthusiastically written and I've no doubt that it will do somebody a lot of good. It's a little too intense for me as written, but I can adapt it to my lifestyle. A lot of the recipes look good as well.
Well-written book explains why we need to give up sugar and provides clever ideas for beating sugar cravings. Smart tips help you realize how much sugar you are actually taking in and creative food ideas provide healthy eating options. And strategies for eating out help you stay in control. Choose from a really disciplined 3-day detox or a more gradual 21-day detox to cut out the sugar. Recipes range from perfect everyday foods to more difficult recipes for the blossoming chef. From salmon teriyaki to mock potatoes and pear crisps, you will find something satisfying to prepare and enjoy.
I bought this book last night, and was really impressed with the first third of it. From there, it's basically a meal plan for those individuals who want to gradually detox their body from sugar. Great book "for beginners" as it states. For me, it just told me a bunch is info I already knew.
The book has some interesting recipes that I might try. It is easy to read, but I felt it did not get too much into how bad refined sugar is for your body.
Sugar detox. This book was interesting. It helped me understand a little more about detoxing. I am not to sure about some of the recipes they offer because some of the ingredients I don't eat or can't afford. But I did learn a lot about detoxification.
