This is a nice enough, but somewhat generic closed-circle, semi-country-house murder mystery that tends to be a bit too repetitive when explaining the characters' backgrounds.  What makes this series interesting is the relationship between the alchemist and the living gargoyle.  Dorian's new "hobby" is writing a gothic novel.  His attempts are hilarious.  The audiobook narrator, Julia Motyka, does a fairly good rendition of a 150-year-old French gargoyle.  The thing that gets this particular novel an extra half-star from me is the carnivorous plants, the "Victorian" conservatory setting, and the possibility of a plant-monster - which all happen to press my feel-good, girl-squeeling buttons.

Zoe and Dorian must work together with Max to clear his father of murder. Max's shop is vandalized before it even opens and then a murder is committed at the tea club meeting. Working to solve the crimes and discovering disturbing "Frankenstein" plants, they uncover a connection to Max's grandmother and the tea plants she and Max had planted. When the plant disappear and the suspect pool starts to narrow they make a startling discovery about the tea. Dorian is finally meeting Max and the group works to clear Max's father. A great read.

I just love this series. I hope that Gigi keeps writing them. This one was just as good as the last 6, if not better. I'm so glad that Dorian and Max finally got the chance to meet. I can't wait for the next book. Also, I love that the recipes were included in the back again.

Disclaimer-I received the book as an ARC.
Another charming entry in the Accidental Alchemist series, they just go from strength to strength.
This time our motley crew of friends find themselves in another mystery when Max's new tea shop is vandalised before it's grand opening.
If you like quirky characters, quirky storylines and of course tea, get on this series straight away!!😊

Another book of Dorian using his little grey cells to solve a mystery. In this book I learned quite a bit about tea; enough to google some info on it. The reason I love this series so much is because you can lay it down and come back to the story in a couple of days. The mysteries are always solved at the end of the book and the characters are delightful. There’s humor throughout the book which I find appealing. Surprisingly, this book had very interaction with teen characters this time.

This series continues to delight and is the perfect story to curl up with as the leaves turn and weather chills! In this story, the focus is on Max and his family but also includes all the characters we have come to love. I did not see how the mystery would come together until the very end. I highly recommend!

As each new Accidental Alchemist novel is released the series keeps getting better, and this one is no exception. As Zoe Faust's boyfriend Max prepares for the grand opening of his new shop, The Alchemy of Tea, one misadventure after another mars the occasion. First a vandal smashes the window of neighboring cafe Blue Sky Teas, then Max's store is destroyed and, finally, an unlikeable member of a local tea club is murdered. Even worse, Max's estranged father is in town and is a suspect in the crimes. Zoe and Max, along with gargoyle Dorian and their other alchemist friends, take on the job of solving the crimes and clearing Max's father. Gigi Pandian skillfully keeps the reader guessing about more than just the solution to the murder - will Max ever meet Dorian? Will Max and his father reconcile? Will Max be able to open the store? Will Dorian ever finish writing a mystery novel of his own? This 7th novel in the series is another winner and leaves me happily waiting for the next one!

Another great read from Gigi Pandian
I love this series (this is book 7 with more to come) and always look forward to the next installment to see what shenanigans Zoe and her pals get up to in and around Portland Oregon. This book did not disappoint with Dorian up to his usual antics, some weird goings on, a mystery or two to solve along the way, and some recipes at the back of the book. I guessed a few plot point reveals ahead of time but the rest took me by surprise; I don't think I've ever solved all the mysteries in one of these books but it doesn't really matter because they're just so entertaining to read. The story is multi-layered and filled with colorful characters, both familiar from previous books in the series, and newly introduced ones. A couple of secondary characters from other books in the series are only mentioned in passing so they may be missed by their fans if the rest of the cast doesn't engross them completely in what they get up to here. This book (and the rest in the series) can be read as a standalone or they can be read out of order as key information is recapped in each book to remind or inform readers, but reading the full series in order is the best way to go in my opinion. The story has fantastical elements to it but is written in such a way that you wonder if they could have some truth in them. A wholly satisfying mystery that will keep you guessing and chuckling 'til the end and maybe make you hungry a time or two along the way.
I highly recommend this book and the others in the series and look forward to reading the next book when it's available and the next one(s) after that. I hope this series continues for many years (and books!) to come.

I love this series! I love everything Gigi Pandian has written! But I really love this series!

The characters are incredibly unique. We have Zoe, an alchemist who has lived for over 300 years. She lives with Dorian, a French gargoyle who was brought to life accidentally in the 1800s. Dorian is one of my favorite fictional characters of all time. He’s admittedly arrogant, but his skills as a chef and alchemist seem to justify his arrogance, at least to him. He’s also an avid reader, willing to learn new things, and, I think, sweet.

Normally, Dorian has several teenage accomplices who help him get into trouble, but they aren’t available to assist him in this book. I was actually happy about their absence, not because I dislike them, but because it gave the other characters more time to shine. It also forced Dorian to be more resourceful and to work with Zoe.

Nicolas and Perenelle Flamel are such fascinating characters, and I really enjoyed spending more time with them in this story. I appreciate Nicolas’s curiosity and willingness to dive into new adventures, and the way Perenelle looks at everything through the eyes of an artist. Tobias is a kind-hearted and gentle man who brings a loving energy to the group.

I admit I still haven’t taken to Max. His skepticism seems a lot like condescension. However, he seems to be making an effort, so I may yet change my mind about him.

The mystery was well-developed and complex. There were just enough suspects, clues, and red herrings. I love the paranormal elements, and I do think that they make the mysteries a bit trickier to solve.

Overall, the plot of this is interesting. We get chapters from Dorian’s perspective again and there’s more of a focus on Max and his family. However, the repetition is very grating. So much of this book could be cut if the same back story wasn’t provided more than once. It detracts from the story line and I got frustrated with it.

The story surrounds the “posh and punk rock tea club”. The way the punk culture is portrayed is very simplified, just being described as eccentric and to shock. The main character, Zoe, is again one of my least favourites, with her tendency to feel that she knows it all or is always right seeming exaggerated in this book. I enjoyed chapters concerning Dorian and the Flamels more so than anything with Zoe.

For me, I feel that the way the characters talk is overly formal and not realistic, with extra details being provided that doesn’t sound natural. For example, the tea club is consistently referred to by its full name where natural conversation would shorten it. The effect makes the dialogue feel a slog to work through.

Unfortunately, for me, these flaws detract from the story and is why I’m only giving it 2 stars.

I don’t think Gigi Pandian can write a boring or bad story and I hope there will be a lot of stories in the Accidental Alchemist series as I love Dorian, Zoe, Max and the great cast of characters.
This is a closed circle whodunit with strong gothic elements. There’s a sense of dread in some parts and you don’t know who can be trusted and who is a villain.
I was fascinated by the description of the conservatory and the plants as I’m a keen gardener.
I think it’s the best in the series as it’s tightly knitted, fast paced and twisty page turner that kept me turning pages and reading late in the night.
There’re some very funny moments, there’s changes that are full of promises and an entertaining and compelling story.
I am tempted to start the series from the beginning as the character’s arc is fascinating and I think I would find new details.
This story can be read as a stand-alone but some details and nuances can be only appreciated if you read the whole series.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to Gigi Pandian for this digital copy, all opinions are mine

I love these books. They are delightful, quick reads about characters I've come to really love. Zoe Faust is a 300 year old alchemist, trained by the immoral Nicholas Flammel. Because she doesn't age, she is forced to move every few years so that people don't realize her secret. She moved to Portland, OR several years ago and has built a family --many of whom realize that she doesn't age.

In this book, Zoe gets involved with the alchemy of tea-dating back to Ancient China. Her boyfriend Max has left his work as a detective to open a tea shop. Just before the opening, someone breaks in, trashed the place and steals a very special tea. It is up to Zoe, her friend the Gargoyle Dorian and Max to try to figure out not only who stole the tea and why, but who murdered a member of the Punk and Posh tea group that meets in a conservatory populated by insectovirous plants (they are fed by bugs and such). Solving the mystery of murder and the tea theft drives the plot.

Gigi Pandian scores again!

**Spoiler alert**
Number 7 in the series is as tea-rrific as the previous entries (I can picture Dorian shaking his head at the cringeworthy pun).
Max, Zoe's boyfriend and former detective, is in the final stages of preparation for the grand opening of his tea shop, The Alchemy of Tea. Unfortunately, the shop is vandalized, Max's homegrown tea blend is stolen, and Max's father confesses to the crime. Zoe and Max are skeptical, which sets them off to try and unravel the mystery before the real perpetrator gets away with it. While all that's going on, Zoe and Dorian uncover what could be a new offshoot of alchemy, involving grafting plants by sewing them together with yarn, which may result in ambulatory vegetation. So much to unpack.

The usual twists and turns abound herein, with Zoe and Dorian playing off each other so well, along with Nicolas, Perenelle, and Tobias, who add their skills to the mix. Pandian's way with words is evident, all while she imbues historical characters with everyday characteristics to bring them into our world.
"I watched the steam from the teapot disappear into the air like figments of my imagination." (p.171)
'"Come in, come in!" cried Nicolas, ushering Dorian inside before spending nearly a minute looking for his glasses, which Dorian, once realizing what the man was looking for, pointed out were on top of his head.' (p.205)

Brixton and Veronica don't show up except by mention here. I would have thought they would normally have attended the opening of the tea shop, but their absence in the sleuthing was noticeable since they pair up with Dorian so frequently.

Zoe and Dorian continue to have the greatest interactions. She quips, '"You're a dozen steps beyond the facts we know." [To which Dorian replies] "Do not exaggerate. It does not become you," Dorian huffed. "I will grant that perhaps I am five steps ahead. I cannot help it that my little gray cells help me connect the dots of a mystery unfolding before us so quickly."'(p. 144) He's just so...Dorian. My favorite Dorian quote of this book is from p.284: "It was best not to disabuse Nicolas of the idea that Dorian's ideas were superior. It was, after all, quite true."

And the next book will be entitled "The Alchemist of Brushstrokes and Brimstone." Ooh, sounds like Perenelle and her new garden will feature heavily.

I received an advance copy from the publisher for review purposes.

Another amazing read. What I love most about this series is just how invested I've become in the characters. When I first started Accidental Alchemist, I honestly was a bit, well, scared. I've always been more into thick books with just enough detail to let me imagine the story in my mind and build a visual. I had never really been into "cozy mysteries," as it were. There wasn't "enough" to make me feel like a part of the story. But Ms. Pandian has sucked me in and won't let me go.
While I highly recommend the series as a whole, one bonus is that this story does work well on its own. You can still go back and read the earlier stories without feeling that weird feeling.
A great cozy story, perfect for a night cuddled under a blanket with a cup of tea and a kitten on your lap.

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. This was such a good book! It may be my favorite book in the series so far and I really enjoy this series! It was a good mystery and really moved the whole story of the series forward, which I really enjoyed. I thought it was very well written and I loved that almost everyone in their "family" got a chance to help with the mystery. I loved learning more about tea and how it's made and grown and I always enjoy reading about the wonderful Dorian cooks up. I'm looking forward to more books in this series!

Gigi Pandian books are invariably charming. She invites the reader into her worlds (or back into her worlds) generously and with characters that are among my very favorites. The Alchemist of Monsters and Mayhem is all the better for being able to spend more time with Dorian, Zoe, and the gang. This setting is different for the series but not unwelcome and the plot makes excellent use of it. I had an absolutely lovely time reading Pandian's latest and always look forward to all her books with anticipation and a pre-order.

Another fascinating mystery in this always intriguing series. Just before Max, Zoe's boyfriend, opens his new tea shop, it is vandalized, delaying not only the opening, but also his introduction to Dorian. Max's estranged father, Andrew, confesses, but turns out to have an alibi. Who else had a motive to keep the shop from opening? Zoe and Damian turn to a group of Max's friends who are interested in tea. And then one of them is murdered, and Andrew is the prime suspect. Naturally Zoe and Dorian investigate, unsure exactly what they are looking for, or what they might discover.

I just finished reading this book and I loved the mystery. From the very first book reading about Dorian Robert-Houdin, a gargoyle and alchemist, Zoey Faust caught and has held my attention. The setting in Portland gives added flair to the mystery series.

Thank you Gigi Pandian, for an advanced reading copy. Life happened and prevented my reading this book sooner. And getting my review completed.

I look forward to the next release in 2024.

What can I say? I’m not one to leave reviews normally but I must share that my love of this alchemist series has so enriched my reading experience that I hope in some way others will follow suit and explore the world of Zoe and Dorian as so fabulously written by Ms. Pandian. Please start at the beginning of this marvelous series to fully enjoy the world Gigi has created. Better yet, the audiobooks narrated by Julia Motyka are top notch. Enjoy!

I always delight in the tales of these characters. Dorian adds such a unique flavor to all the goings on. The mysteries are always something more than expected since this is a world where alchemists live long and a gargoyle can become a food alchemist. We meet Max's father who has a whole story of his own that seeps into the investigation of the murder. I was glad to see the conclusion when it came at the last moment, but I almost felt that most of the story was misdirection.

Seventh in the series, Zoe and Dorian try to solve why Max’s tea shop was burned before opening, a tea club meeting in a spooky and mysterious conservatory filled with poisonous plants, Max’s estranged father appears after many absent years, and a corpse is found in the greenhouse while tea plants are pulled from Max’s own family garden. Dorian thinks that a possible plant creature exists within the conservatory. And Max finally meets Dorian after a few setbacks.

We also learn some more about Max's past , and Dorian finally meets him! Altogether, a great read!! ♥️

Once again Gigi Pandian has outdone herself with The Alchemist of Monsters and Mayhem, her 7th in the series. Zoe is thrust into solving a murder after her boyfriend’s new tea shop is vandalized before it’s grand opening. Dorian proves to be instrumental in helping her when a body is discovered in a eerie mansion with carnivorous plants.

Still enjoying the series. But this one dragged a little for me. The plant monsters was just a little too far fetched. And there were lots of characters. I still love Dorian and Zoe. So I will read another one from the series. But this wasn't my favorite.
