(The Sunshine Series #2)Sophie’s life has changed. She’s moved to New York, she’s playing music for new people, and she’s making new friends. Then there’s Myles, and the fact that he is now her boyfriend—and everyone knows it. There are a lot of new things to take in, but Sophie has no problem adjusting. She’s not exactly normal, living in a half-human, half-vampire world, but she’s finally, truly happy. But some parts of Sophie and Myles’ old life still hide in the dark, waiting for the right opportunity to strike.Sophie’s having nightmares again, but they aren’t about her; Myles is hiding something that she’s not sure she wants to know. And one lie will change everything. No matter how hard she tries to cover up the marks her monsters have left behind, they never truly go away, and Myles’ monsters are no different.Once again, Sophie’s caught between life and death, but this time, only she can save herself.
Nikki Rae is an independent author who lives in New Jersey. She explores human nature through fiction, concentrating on making the imaginary as real as possible. Her genres of choice are mainly dark, scary, romantic tales, but she’ll try anything once. When she is not writing, reading, or thinking, you can find her spending time with animals, drawing in a quiet corner, or studying people. Closely.
Sun Poisoned is the second book in the Sunshine series by Nikki Rae. In this book, Sophie and her friends have graduated and are beginning a new adventure. This is their dream, to play music and actually get paid for it. Sophie, Myles, Boo and Trei pack their bags and move to New York. They will be playing at the Midnight club. Sophie and Myles are a couple, officially. Her life is about as normal as it can be. Even her relationship with her Mother is somewhat better. But can this last?
We get to know Evan more in this book. He is part owner of Midnight. And we meet Ava, Evan and Myles’s friend. We also get to know a lot more about Evan and Myles’ vampire world. As Sophie and Myles relationship progresses, some secrets are revealed. During the course of this book, both Sophie and Myles keep secrets from each other, secrets that could tear them apart.
We see a lot more of Sophie’s talent as a pianist as well. She makes such an impression that the lead singer of the headliner group, Honus, wants her to do a show with them.
Just when things are really taking off for Sophie, tragedy strikes. Tragedy so big it rips her world apart. And at the same time, danger is back. She thought she was safe now, but she finds out how wrong she is.
“Monsters never truly go away. They claw their way to the surface eventually.”
Will she be strong enough to survive? This book has heartwarming moments and heartbreaking moments. As well as some pulse pounding moments as well. And this time…we have a cliff hanger. I will have to wait until the final book comes out to see if Sophie and Myles have the strength to survive, both together and against evil.
Cover: Interesting Rating: R Thumbs Up: 4.5 Overall: Continues the excellence Characters: Well done Plot: When a lie might change your life Page Turner: Yes Series Cont.? Yes Recommend: Yes Book Boyfriend: Myles
SUMMARY (60 words or less) This book continues where the last left off. Sophie is making a place for herself in this world and is succeeding. Too bad a lie might derail everything and change the way life as she knows it forever. I really enjoyed this book and have to have book three now.
For a full review and yummy pic, see my blog post at:
Where to even start with Sun Poisoned. Maybe I should just begin with the fact that this one was even BETTER THEN THE FIRST!! Yes I liked Sunshine. It was a good book that was filled with a lot of intense emotions and wasn't something that you normally read. Sun Poisoned surpassed any expectations I had for the second book in the series!!
Sophie has finished high school and is jumping at the opportunity to move up in the world. So she packs up everything and moves to New York to begin her dream of playing music. Along with the whole gang, the story shifts to living in the big apple, playing at Midnight, and moving forward with everyone's relationships.
Her and Myles are slowly learning to trust each other, becoming more comfortable with the "sexual" part of their relationship. Their time together is sweet and at times it's sexy but overall is exactly how I would want their relationship to be. To me it really is the best part of this series. I LOVE how they are there for each other equally. There's no needing to be next to each other cause they can't keep their hands off each other. They are with each other because both needs the other to be able to move on with their lives. There's not enough to say about them that will convey how much I just adore their relationship. I just...hmm.. LOVE THEM!
"My skin gets hot, my hands intertwining in his hair as one of his comes to rest on my ribcage. His mouth leaves mine only to kiss my cheek, my throat, my collar-bone, then back to my neck, shooting hot waves of uneasiness, then contentment through me"
This second book delves into much deeper emotions and situations then the first. Sophie faces her own monsters, literally, and multiple times. I'm really proud of the way that she handles herself while facing them. She is such a strong character that can get through anything, including fighting the demons inside herself. There were a couple times that I had to lay the book down and collect myself because Nikki has a way of digging deep and getting these emotions to bubble up to the top. When the "event" happens, I nearly cried! Gosh my heart is breaking right now just thinking about it. Just be prepared to have your heart wrenched out of your chest.
"The point is," Manny continues. "When you love someone and they break a part of you, your soul has a tenancy to fill up the cracks they leave behind. No matter how many pieces are missing"
Myles is such a breath of fresh air. He is there for Sophie whenever she needs him, even when she doesn't even know it. While he has his own demons to fight, he will fight Sophie's with her. I just love that he will do anything for her, wither its just sitting on the couch watching TV, telling her no when she needs to hear it, and also putting up with her shit and getting her through things that no one else would help her with.
All the secondary characters in this book series are AMAZING! They are so easy to love and so easy to see why they are in Sophie's life. All of them have their own reason for truly looking out for her. When meeting new characters such as Ava and Evan, you see Sophie's ability to adapt. (Some cases are harder then others, which when you read you will understand cause I would have freaked out too!) She can make friends, maybe not trust them completely (after everything shes been through I couldn't imagine that any other way), but she is willing to move on with her life.
I will warn you though that this book is quite dark and it touches on a lot of deep emotions. Even the situations can get a little descriptive at times, but not in a bad way. You get the full picture and you really feel what Sophie feels. Its kind of terrifying in the sense that I would NEVER want to go through what Sophie has to go through and I was in my own terrible car accident. Just the pain and horror of the decisions she has to make...ugh! Just horrific... but wonderful!
'"It's your decision."Myles says, placing it on the edge of the tub. The metal is slightly beaten up now, but it's still capable of getting the job done. Myles steps out of the bathroom, shutting the door behind him and leaving me alone with my monsters.'
Well that's my thoughts. I really hope I haven't scared any one off and really hope I can convince even just a couple people to pick this series up and give it a try. It is just such a nice retreat from all the lovey dovey teen books, but yet its still fills the shoes of being a romance. Myles and Sophie's relationship will always be one of my favorites from now on just because of how they help each other out just because they care. Truly and and deeply care for one another. A true romance that stems from something dark but grows into something so beautiful. Enjoy!
*I have received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review.*
I was so torn about this book. I didn't know if I should give it 4 or 5 stars but I went with four because I had some issues that I couldn't get over.
Don't get me wrong this is a great read. I loved the characters. I just didn't get Sophie half the time. She made such idiotic decisions in this book that I couldn't pass over. Why would you not talk to the person you love, have a heart to heart, let him explain, and explain yourself? She just shut off from the world and instead of getting better with her anxiety disorder she made it worse. I get it that Myles could have been more upfront with her, but she didn't even approach the subject long enough to give him time to respond.
The Stevie incident is in my opinion the faultiest plot device in the book and I do not appreciate what has been done to him and ultimately Jade just for the dramatic effect. I have other theories of why it was done but because the subject hasn't been broached in the book I'm not going to make a conspiracy theory right here. This could be the main reason why I deducted a star. I was really upset by this unnecessary tragedy.
Myles was his adorable self as usual. I love him very much and even if he didn't come forth with all his baggage I consider he has just 50% of the blame. The other 50% is Sophie's brain that is living in denial.
I loved all the other side characters, especially Jade (my heart broke for him).
I would like to have more explanations in the following books about Michael, and why he can't be killed (in my opinion nothing is indestructible, everything can die one way or another, cut his effing head off or something). The blood poisoning dilemma is not fully understandable. I am terribly confused by that.
I will definitely read the next book seeing that there are so many more things I need to learn about this world Ms. Rae has created.
Nikki..... Nikki...... Nikki..... HOLY F^&%$#@ S*&^!!!!!!!!!!!! This is an AMAZING no PHENOMENAL no wait I can't find the right word for what this sequel is.... ABSOLUTELY F^&*%$# AMAZING! Lord when I started reading it I was transported into the lives of Myles my man man and Sophie. I love Sophie to pieces because she has survived so much and in Sun Poisoned she really comes into herself and stands up for what she believes in. I swear I am going to try and not do spoilers because you have to read this book in order to get the full effect of what is going on and where Sophie and Myles are going. If you read book one Sunshine then you know that Sophie and Myles had a rough go round with their relationship and being together. So her eis the continuation of their story and what a story it is. Lord I LOVED it and when I got to the end I was like HOLY COW what the heck I need book three like I need air to breathe!
Sophie and Myles are in New York starting over together. They are out in the open with their relationship and Sophie and Myles are finally happy or are they? Sophie is living the life with her music and new friends and her open love for Myles. Myles... Myles.... you made me sad, mad, and down right pissed at you in this book! I love you but dammit get your crap together and stop with the secrets because Sophie's nightmares came back full force and the gig is up for you. Myles is still keeping secrets and when they reveal themselves S&^% hits the fan and Sophie is left to decide if this is all worth it. Is it worth her life?
Sophie will have to make some serious decisions and when she does it will not be pretty. She will have to choice between life and death.... Myles or nothing.... what will she choose?
*Ebook obtained directly from the author in exchange for an HONEST review* These are my own honest thoughts. I'll be posting a full review on my blog soon.
Okay, this series just keeps getting better. See my review for Sunshine #1. This novel's review can nearly be a repeat of that one. I'm pleasantly surprised and love the ups and downs going on throughout the series. Like I said before, I'm usually leery of new vampire series because they're generally either good or really bad. There's few in betweens. I'm really enjoying this series. This novel, moreso than book 1, focuses on the supernatural elements in the plot. The ending - total cliffhanger! Wow! I can't freaking wait to get my hands on the next book!!!!!!
Just a side note... I wish I could play the piano...LoL I'll take a hottie like Myles please ;)
How - Why - You - thoughts are forming...How you are you not reading this right now? Why aren't you reading this right now? You NEED TO READ THIS RIGHT NOW.
First Warnings: Kay so first off, this is the second to a series - sorry the series name escapes me at the moment. So yeah there will be spoilers for book one but NOT BOOK TWO - this book ;) and SECOND off, I was given this in exchange for an honest review, and thats what i do, honest reviews <3
Song Choice: "Heavy in Your Arms" by Florence and the Machine, "Being Alone" by Love On A Real Train & Joachim Cooder, now for this last one I never pick songs that are mentioned in the book - because you can be like WELLL DUUUUH - but for this I will "No Surprises" by Radiohead
First thoughts: BLEW ME RIGHT OUT THE FUCKING WATER. Now okay I really, really liked book one, i thought it was fantastic, Nikki's got some major style, and beautiful writing. This - this was a masterpiece. A big fear I always have is the next book - will it flop? Will it remain about the same? Will it get better? Oh it got better and more. How do I explain the weight of this book? It weighs heavily on you, takes you down, and pulls you in until nothing is left. This book will own you heart and soul.
Plot: So we left the gang in pretty high spirits right? We are off to New York to live out their dreams - and everything is awesome right? No more having to worry about Michael, no having to deal with scars from the past....oh wait. i lied. The past never seems to let its claws loose from you even for a moment. So here in this book Myles and Sophie are tested with whole new problems, there relationship is still growing - they aren't jumping into this like insta love - obviously they love each other but its not like they have to rush things which i love. I really do love it. Why not take our time? Anyways, moving on from the awesome romance, this was so emotional. It was seductive and painful. I actually cried - oh yes - I don't cry very often but I did. Soooo God what can I say without giving anything away... make sure once you get about to the half way point you have nothing going on because you will not be able to pry your hands away from your kindle, book, computer, phone whatever you are reading it from.
So the writing: I really just want to state it was beautiful absolutely beautiful. There was a part that had a me so convinced that it was alright - that something that shouldn't be alright it was. It came from the heart, it was so passionate, and God so DAMN AMAZING.
Thoughts on Characters:
Sophie: She grows so much in this book, but as much as she grows sometimes i feel like she still is stuck in the past which is no way me saying that I am upset by it - its just an observation. Personally for me it makes sense for her character so seeing her break completely from who she was seems impossible. Anyways but she does grow, she is still awesome. I really like her and while there were times I felt maybe a little less than convinced of her emotions because its hard to really tell how she feels with the way the book is written i am okay with this, really i am. I just ... she is a puzzle. I will admit though I know the next book is the final and i will have a damn hard time saying goodbye. Anyways but she was a very well rounded, awesome character - not your stereotypical main character girl.
Myles: See i liked Myles a lot more in this book, he seems to come out of his shell a little more. While this book i felt really does gravitate towards Sophie and the gang which again no problem with that Myles did actually shine a little brighter in this book. He will not be my super Alpha hear me roar Main Man but I am okay with that. He is sweet, pushes when he needs to and over all quiet and understanding. He really gets Sophie, really sees her and God my heart breaks for him sometimes but sometimes i was ready to throttle him myself. that is all.. I love him
The gang: Is awesome as always. That is all on them.
The ending: :| um.ineedthenextonenow.thankyouverymuch. that is all.

*This book was provided to me in exchange for an honest and unbiased review*
I still love Sophie (even though she can be a bit frustrating) and I adore how non-glamourous, even creepy, the vampires are. I just didn't enjoy book 2 as much as book 1. This one I'd give 3.5-4 stars, whereas book 1 was more like 4-4.5 stars.
Sophie is one of my absolute favourite female lead characters in a New Adult book. As well as her having the coolest hair and tattoos, I think it's because her monsters are so realistically portrayed. There's none of this nonsense of getting over traumas in a matter of days/weeks. I love the way the author writes her thoughts, the way she says one thing when she means another. I love how intensely portrayed her feelings and sensations are. I felt her pain, deeply, I felt her disorientation, her confusion, her guilt. It was all physical. That whole last section was brilliantly horrible and painful to read.
The atmosphere of this book, the music, the alternative characters, it's all just such a relief from all the new adult copycat books out there. It does have that intensity of emotion but there's something raw and natural about it rather than overdone to elicit sobbing. At 66% I was in tears but the grief felt very real.
There were a couple of things I was less keen on in book 2 compared to book 1. Firstly, although I was pleased to be learning more about what vampires are in this world I found the explanations fragmented, dotted all through. I got confused and frustrated with Sophie for not demanding more explanation, for allowing herself to be only told so much. The pacing was a little strange too, it sort of bumbled along, then something happened but it was kind of anticlimactic and then the whole last section sort of bumbled along some more and then it ended. Don't get me wrong, for that last bit I was hooked, it was brilliantly gorey and tense, it's just that it just ended and I wanted more!
The other thing that distressed me was the romance. I wanted more of it and I hated any tension between the two of them. Miles is sweet but I still don't love him and I found his lying annoying! I think if I saw more interaction between them I might warm to him more. When we did see them interact I was very engaged with the story because my heart wants so much for Sophie to let him in. Her struggle was sad but beautiful as she was growing in confidence with herself.
I absolutely love this series and can't wait to see where it's going and what's happening to Sophie, but this book felt like a filler. I'm left with frustrations and questions, and I just wished I could just move on to book 3 now. I think my review sounds more negative than I intend. Please take it for what it is which is that actually I love this, I just wanted more, more, more!!!!
Coming into this book, I did not really know what to expect. I knew that Sophie was moving to New York to pursue her dream in music. And, that she and Myles were going to be a couple. But, I really was not anticipating the slight twists and turns that their relationship was going to take.
Getting the full-time gig at Club Midnight proved to be a blessing and a curse for Sophie. She got to play music with her friends, Boo and Trei, and also got an invite to play with club favorite headliner Honus. But then, after spending a little time with club owner Evan’s girlfriend Ava, she learned some secrets that would begin to change her life, and her relationship with Myles.
When Sophie spends a little time with Ava, she learns that she was attacked by Michael as well, but that she is infected with his blood. This infection causes excruciating pain, and there is no way for her to be cured, and she will eventually die. This is what Michael tried doing to Sophie at the end of Sunshine. She also learns that where she lives, the club, and many of the area establishments are “protected” areas. Places where Michael cannot go.
After learning this information, and realizing this is the reason why she is where she is now, is enough to damage a lot of the trust she had in Myles. She now knows that Michael is still alive, after she was made to believe he wasn’t, she begins to worry about her safety, and the safety of her family and friends. When tragedy strikes, and Stevie, her brother Jade’s boyfriend, is killed in a car accident, she believes it is her fault. That because he couldn’t get to her, Michael got to Stevie instead.
It is because of this tragedy, however, that the defenses are weakened, and an opportunity is made for Michael to get Sophie out of the “safe” zone and away from Myles. When he gets her alone he attacks her again. This time it is believed that he will be successful. Now that she is infected with his blood she has to choose between being turned in order to live, or allow the infected blood to kill her. But, she is not willing to make this decision until she gets a chance to talk to Jade one last time.
I must say that Nikki did a better job on this one. There was a couple times, to me, where the story seemed to go a little off topic, like when Jack shows up. What was the significance of that? But she was able to pull it right back together. Once again the storyline was able to keep me interested, but it was not “gripping” like I feel she is capable of making it. There are a few unanswered questions, that made me feel a bit jaded when the book ended, in which I hope will be answered in a third book of the series, if there is one. We will have to wait and see.
I received Sun Poisoned from the author in return for an honest review. Sun Poisoned is the second book in the Sunshine series. The book starts not long after the first one has ended with Sophie living in New York with her two best friends and fellow bandmates Boo and Trei. After everything that’s happened she still can’t believe she’s living her dream. She has her own apartment even a job plus her band gets to prefer at Evan’s club in Chinatown and then there is Myles who is her boyfriend.
Sophie should be happy everything is finally going her way. However the past doesn't want to stay dead, she’s still having nightmares some hers and some not. She’s also still adjusting to being a part of the vampire world, but she’s doing ok with it. Until the past starts to catch up with her in the form of her ex-boyfriend, then Michael makes an appearance revealing that he hasn't died and he’s still out their hunting her. Sophie is caught in a deadly cat and mouse game will they be able to save her before it’s too late?
Oh how I love Sophie she’s such an inspiring character, even at her lowest she still manages to fight back to the top even if it’s short lived. I love how she has to deal with real life issues it makes her feel like she’s a real girl who happens to have a little paranormal mixed into her story. I think Myles is still wonderful for her, he may have fangs but he’s not sparkle which I love because he can go everywhere with her. They both have baggage but it’s what makes them easy to connect with as a reader plus who doesn't love a little paranormal thrown into the mix. I feel like I have really had the chance to watch Sophie grown from the first book to the end of the second, it’s been an emotional ride but well worth it.
Sun Poisoned is a fast paced story that draws the reader in Sophie’s life right from the start keeping you captivated till the very end. I found the story brilliantly written creating a beautiful story that touches on hard issues but with a unique twist. The story is full of action, suspense and intrigue never creating a dull moment. I was drawn in right from the start I was unable to put it down even taking my kindle to the dog park to read and staying up late. I love the character even the supporting character have their own charm. Sun Poisoned is one of those stories that will steal your heart, leaving you wanting more. I know I can't wait to see what happens to Sophie next. I do however think that since the story is dealing with adult issues it may be a little more New Adult then Young Adult but I think teens as well as adults will take something special away from Sophie’s life.
I loved this book! Sun poisoned picks up after the first book with Sophie, Myles and the gang living in New York. Sophie,Boo and Trei are doing what they love, Playing music at a club in Chinatown. This book was fantastic. I loved reading about how much Sophie is trying to change but also how hard it is to do that. You really see her struggle with everything she has been through in her life and how she is trying to get over it but it's not easy. She wants to be able to let go and do "normal" couple things with Myles like Kissing and letting him hold her while she sleeps but can't get over the trauma that Jack did to her. She goes through a lot of emotional things in this book like dealing with lies, and death and cutting. But the way she handles them while of course are a little different because of the whole vampire factor but are still very realistic. She is a strong young woman and I find myself admiring her. Now let's talk about Myles. I really do love him. He is so sweet and caring and he is an amazing boyfriend, friend and support system for Sophie. He never pressures her into things and always understand when she tells him to stop because she is getting overwhelmed with the intimacy parts of their relationship. But even with how great Myles is, we also learn that he has been keeping some important things from Sophie. He does it because he thinks it is for the better but it really hurts their relationship. They go through some trust issues and while I just want them to be happy I think that this helps make their relationship seem more truthful for the reader. Real couples fight and go through problems and I love that Nikki shows that.
A lot happens in Sun poisoned. Some new problems as well as old ones pop up in the story. It's full of laughter and heartbreak. As well as some important and life changing moments for our Heroine. This is one series that has me addicted and waiting for the next book. Nikki has started a fantastic series and I can't wait to see where she takes Sophie and Myles in the future.
I was giving an ARC copy of this book for an honest review
Sun Poisoned is the second book in the Sunshine series following Sophie and Myles. I really love Sophie and Myles. They are simply adorable in their vampire/human relationship sort of way! Sophie took a piece of my heart in the first book Sunshine and I have a soft spot for her, hoping she will finally be happy.
In Sun Poisoned Sophie moves to New York with her two best friends & Myles. Life in New York is great for Sophie; she is having success with her band, lives rent free, and has Myles in her life. It’s the first time Sophie is truly happy in her life.
The book is more mysterious then the first book. In Sun Shine the plot deepens and becomes a bigger plot on Myle’s vampire world when it starts to affect Sophie. As his world begins to interfere with Sophie’s their relationship still continues to develop into something more. I really hope in the next book in the series will continue their relationship move to the next level; I am ready for them to have a mature/adult relationship.
There are new secondary characters you will meet in Sun Shine who play major roles, especially towards the end. The first half of Sun Shine was a bit slow but then it really picks up and everything comes together. The second half really picked up for me, I enjoyed reading more the vampire world.
Nikki Rae writes great characters. I really love Sophie and Myles; yes this is a series about a human girl falling in love with a vampire but she makes the characters unique and special. Totally different than any other vampire book out there. I did miss reading about Sophie’s dysfunctional family a little while reading Sun Shine I still enjoyed getting to know the characters more and reading a more mysterious storyline. I look forward to reading book three in the series; the book does end with a bit of a cliff hanger leaving you wanting more!
I give Sun Poisoned (Sunshine #2) 3.5 Stars.
ARC provided by the author in return for an honest review.
Sun Poisoned (The Sun Shine Series) Book#2 is a mysterious journey through the twist and turns of the life of Sunshine. Sun Poisoned picks up where book 1 left off, with Sunshine picking up the pieces from the physical and emotional pain that had been her life. She has healed and living with her friends and Myles in New York city. Playing her music, Sunshine appears to now be living the dream. Although even at the very beginning, there appears to be a cloud marring the happiness of life, with the nightmares that have begun to come back to torture Sunshine. Things pick up, and the bottom drops out as the story progresses, with the secrets beginning to weave their lies into Sunshine’s reality, straining the relationships in her life. I will say that the ending was a mouth dropping event and now I have been placed on pins and needles, wondering with nail-biting intensity, what will happen? Will everything, or anything be okay? What of my favorite couple? I enjoyed Sun Posioned as much the first, the author has done a phenomenal job at taking a character who is hurt and broken in many places, and giving her such an inner strength, its astounding to witness and very inspirational. Also the fact that the strength of this character so far in the series is not due to any paranormal ability, but through Human resilience. Sunshine, is an incredible young lady, that with the love of her family, friends and the desire not to be a victim, overcomes many of the challenges that had been thrown her way. Nikki Rae, deals with many intense subjects with a gentle hand, and I love that regardless of all the ugliness that has occurred in Sunshine’s life, she still has the ability to create beauty through her music. Because she is a fighter and will not allow who she is at the core to be stolen, by Human or Vampire predators. The book had a very steady, poetic flow, that keeps the reader interested and looking forward to the next chapter. Of course with the cliffhanger I am on edge and very much looking forward to the third book in the series! I fully recommend Sun Poisoned to those who enjoy Paranormal reads. The rating is for Older Teens through Adults for some intense imagery.
There is a tragic event that takes place in this book. I won't give it away. But I cried... big, ugly, body wracking sob cry. My heart broke...shattered into a million little pieces and spilled all over the floor. I still haven't picked them all up! This event breaks not only me, but knocks Sophie back down about a million rungs on the ladder she's tried so hard to climb up. I wanted to jump into the book and just hug everyone! If I tell you who else falls with her it'll give it away. So be warned that you should have a box of tissues close by while reading.
I had a lot of questions at the end of book one. And to be honest, none of those questions were answered. I still don't know why she can't remember her childhood (it wasn't even touched on in this book)....I still have no idea about her real father (again, he's not even brought up in this book)... we know a little bit more about the shared history between Myles, Evan, Ava and Michael, but we still don't know the exact reason that Michael hates Sophie so much and wants her dead. But I think we are getting there. And you know what, the answers may not mean anything when it comes to the conclusion. But I'm like a kid who wants to know a secret!
I give this book a solid 4 stars. I didn't feel so overwhelmed with information. I felt that every tidbit that was given to me was essential information. We saw our main characters develop a little further and we met some awesome new friends! I really can't wait to read the conclusion of this series. The writing only got better in this book and I have a feeling that it's going to be superb in book three. I want a happily ever after....will we get one?

I was given a Copy for an Honest Review Sun Poisoned 4.5 stars
For you to understand Sun Poisoned you are going to definitely need to read Sunshine,Book one in the series.I found Sun Poisoned to be of a faster pace then its Predecessor Sunshine. This story is an emotional roller coaster. From the beginning your brought to New York City with Sophie's Band playing at Myles friend Evan's Club.Be prepared for some big changes in characters.Im still not sure how I feel about Evan. I think my main issue with the book was its fast pace and some of the lack of background on what was happening with Sophie towards the end.I wanted it to slow down a small bit so I could process everything going on.We went from one major even in the book to another major event to another very quickly.I needed time to be able to process what was going on.BUT other then that I really loved it.I like how the book plays out.I am on my seats edge waiting for Sun Damaged.Im hoping things that I thought might be broken aren't quiet as broken as they appeared.Im also hoping Myles and Sophie and a huge heart to heart.I have to say Im really enjoying Nikki's writing style and her way with words.I am definitely on a countdown to when Sun Damaged will be released!
I think i loved Sun Poisoned more than Sunshine and i didn't think that was possible. It starts out with Sophie and her band and best friends Boo and Thei moving to new to play at Midnight club. Nikki Rae is so talented with her writing. Everything about the story draws you in and it's so easy to love every one of her characters. Sophie is still trying to get past everything that has happen to her and is always atempting to get closer to Myles. Of course Myles is still his amazingly caring self but you do find out in this book he's not completely perfect, he may be doing things for the right reasons but that doesn't make everything alright. There are a ton of twist and turns in Sun Poisoned and i have to say i actually sobbed at one point, just going to show you how great the writing is that i felt connected to everyone and could actually feel their pain. And of course once again i love the fact that every chapter has lyrics, such a great idea. I cannot wait for the next book and to find out what will happen to Sophie and Myles... 5 STARS! This series has easily became one of my favorites!
This book was one heck of a read! The main character Sophie is so emotionally raw and damaged it makes my heart hurt reading through her memories and dreams. There was more than once I had to put the book down just to gather myself back together. Just when you start to think Sophie's life is getting better and everything is going to be ok all hell breaks lose in the worst possible ways. Now her world and life are completely falling apart and she's not left with many choices to fix things. Myles is definitely still keeping some big secrets and I feel like there is still a lot going on that we don't know about yet. At some points the characters were a little whiny and overly apologetic but considering the circumstances I guess it's understandable. I still absolutely love the side characters and how they add a bit of fun to brighten up the seriousness of the book. And make no mistake it really is serious and dark. My only issue is the book ended so abruptly I was left with a ton of questions and my jaw hanging open. All I can say is Well Done Nikki Rae because now I can't wait to find out what happens next! In my opinion Sun Poisoned is definitely recommended.
Again I have to thanks Nikki for lending out her books to me in return my honest review. Sun Poisoned is book #2 of the Sunshine series, Sophie and Myles are back!
Review
Sophie nnd Myles are back and living it large in New York, the band is doing great . . . Life is good. Myles still can't feel what Sophie feeling anymore but that doesn't prevent him from getting close to her and her being close to him.
What do you do if someone you trust have been lying to you and for Sophie a tragic event happens that leaves her almost defeneless and in danger.
Was the Michael threat over? Or is there a greater threat beyond Sophie and Myles control?
I give this 4.5 cat's tails up, I really like the intensity of the climax of the story and that ending was just WHEW! and AW MAN! I have to wait until the next book.
An excellent continuation of the first book about Sophie and Myles. I love that this author can make you feel what the characters are feeling. It was interesting to feel Sophie's betrayal at a lie and Myles heartfelt sorrow and belief that he was protecting her all at the same time. This story is the perfect example of how small lies or non-disclosures of truth can lead to huge consequences. My heart broke more than once during this book. Thankfully, the author was kind enough to mend it as well as break it so I finished the book with a sigh and can't wait for her to continue the story. I can't wait to see Sophie in the next story and find out what Jade's thoughts are as well.
*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Some stories are made for happy endings, this isn't one of those. I still have trouble understanding Sophie, I keep thinking things would have been better is she would have just talked to Miles and let him explain. Its like the elephant in the room, you can only ignore it for so long. They are both to blame for how things turned out.
As for Michael, I am still not sure why he can't be killed. Also the blood poisoning isn't explained very well.
I am hoping the next book in this series will explain more about Michael, the blood poisoning, and why Michael can't be killed.
Thank you to Nikki Rae for letting me beta read this! Once again I am impressed by Nikki's amazing writing and her originality. Those who were fans of Sunshine will not be disappointed with this second novel. We're back with the same characters we fell in love with in book one, and now we can watch as they grow as adults. They're out of high school and in NY where things really start to heat up. And then there's Myles..<3 That's all I can say about that lol I love him. Can't wait to see what happens next!
I don't know how to accurately describe how I felt while reading this book. I loved it, absolutely loved it!
This is the 2nd book in the series and it's even better than the first one. Ends with a total cliff hanger that leaves you NEEDING the 3rd book, like NOW. My dear Nikki Rae, I hope you have it done soon because I can not STAND not knowing what i going on. I feel like my 2 closest friends are just gone! Poof!
After you read and love Sunshine, you need to read this.
READ IT AND LOVE IT - now, what are you waiting for????
I tried to start a new book last night, but I couldn't stop thinking about Sophie and Myles. Hence it's ruining my new novel reading experience, so I give up. I would like to review this sequel also.
In the second book in the Sunshine series we see Sophie living in New York, playing at Midnight with her band, and working at the club selling merchandise. She has escaped her mother, she is doing what she loves, and she has boyfriend Myles plus her friends Boo and Trei to enjoy life with.
Sophie is still haunted by her past but she is also now haunted by other people's as well. The incident with Michael has brought Sophie into Myles' world and she is resisting as much as she can. With Myles' help she tries to forget the events six months ago and tries to focus on her new exciting life, but the past is never far behind.
We learn a bit more about the supernatural world this time around, Sophie learns more from Myles and situations that she becomes involved in reveal additional rules and elements of the vampire world, though this time she tries to stay away from it, unprepared to become involved after what happened last time.
The events from the first novel are not forgotten and are revisited, and we also see Sophie become more involved with the paranormal side of her life. What was done well was that those who have not read the first book are explained a few things in fractured recaps throughout the second. While some things are explained, others are simply hinted at and require construction from various comments and references. This is good because while you are left in the dark about a lot of things that occur in the first book, especially specific details or certain characters and histories, the reminders are there, keeping the timeline in check, while also filling in a few gaps and questions at the same time.
The plot style is curious, the element of mystery is not strong per se, but the drawn out nature and untold information keeps you going to try and find the answers. There is a curiosity that has been created to get you involved with these characters once again, and I did find myself getting further attached to these characters, I will say not to all of them, but it did not entirely matter. Each character is unique in their own way, all with stable development behind them that is adequate to their needs in the story and ours, even if it is revealed slowly or straight away. As with Sunshine the characters drive the story and their experiences and lives keep you wanting more and whether that is day to day life and struggles, or whether it is something phenomenal is unimportant.
There are again various incidents and events in this book that occur, some are more complicated and severe compared to those in the first book and Rae writes about these and the experience just as well as before. There are descriptions and emotions used that are excellent at helping us to see and understand them from Sophie's perspective, even if they are not always about her specifically. This adds to the nice uncertainty because we only know what Sophie knows and what people tell her. I think, especially for the latter half of the book, this is incredible important and something that third person could not achieve with the same level of satisfaction.
The beginning feels a little bit slow but we get a lot of information in the first half. We learn more about Myles' life and world, as well as a few outcomes of the events in the last book. Characters are being re-established, a few new ones are introduced, and there is development of Myles and Sophie's relationship.
The good thing about this development we see of Sophie and Myles' relationship is how Rae has approached it. Instead of focusing on the romance element on its own, instead it is shown through other events and the actions of others. This is a clever move because it protects the story from being purely about their romance with other things happening around them, or having moments of story, and then moments of their romance. This is where their connection shines, intertwined through life and the people around them.
Rae has again created a wonderful slow reveal story with a thread of hidden secrets, and while it may not feel gripping initially it is by the ending I assure you, the suspense and uncertainty that fills most of the last half of the book keeps you on edge as you are eager and impatient to see where it leads. And in between then you still get intrigued and involved with these characters, this is what keeps you going to the excitement and excellent ending that inevitable develops. I could easily reread this series right away. This is a strong temptation stopped only by the pile of other books I have to read. I impatiently wait for book three.
So, it's not a secret that I was really impressed by Sunshine (review here. WARNING: contains mild gushing), and I found this sequel to be very similar in both it's strengths and weaknesses. I again really enjoyed the quirky, genuinely likable characters. And I loved this book's guts in making major twists, which lent it (needed) distance from the cliché-storyline path. However, some of the weaknesses that I was easily able to overlook in Sunshine, were a little harder to ignore here, and so I want to go a little deeper into them*
1) The plot, while gutsy, was a little rough around the edges, which I will attempt to explain in my own unofficial, pseudo-scholarly way: I think of plots as either linear or round. A round plot is where, when you reflect back on it, it's cohesive from beginning to end, like a circle or a sphere. Certain points make you reflect back on earlier points or project about what's to come; it's all connected. Sun Poisoned has a liner plot. It's a little more sensational, one scene happens after another and you lose some sense of time/target and of detail of earlier events because they take you so far away from where you started. It's not always a bad thing, particularly for this genre which is a little more sensational, but, in my opinion, Sun Poisoned wanted a little more cohesion and focus. I think Sophie's character being very confused and distressed in parts of the book contributed to this; there were parts when she was a little irrational and it made her choices and therefore the plot a little strange to follow.
2) Sophie, Sophie, Sophie. I like Sophie. She's normal - and YES THIS IS A COMPLIMENT. One of the highest for a character. She's normal in that she wasn't endowed with some crazy power that's gonna save the world - and her boyfriend doesn't choose her because she's special and different. She's normal because she feels real and relatable even if you haven't been in her exact shoes (boots). She's normal but she has a spunk and quirk to her that makes her the perfect mélange of fiction and reality.
I was really happy with where Sophie was at the end of Sunshine. She had grown a lot from her experiences and I felt she was starting to overcome her past and break down some of the walls she had put up around Myles. Happily, this continued for a while in Sun Poisoned, but, disappointingly, it stopped. A lot of curve balls were thrown at Sophie and I don't mean to say that those should be easily dealt with. It did, however, arrest her growth; in fact, I feel like there was a little regression what with all the secrets and what not. I didn't really get to see the development I wanted, particularly around...
3) Myles. Hmmm. I felt like the Myles I loved from Sunshine was reserved a bit in this book. I got the sense that he was always trying to do and be the perfect thing when I would rather see more of his flaws to understand his character better. And dangit what are your secrets?!
And lastly, here's a list (yay lists) of other things I liked and disliked! + music references that were made for me - not a lot of reintroduction of old characters + beautiful and enrapturing descriptions of performing music (my favorite was No Surprises) - not enough Boo and Trei AND Myles and Sophie, like good old days (ok fine maybe that's my problem) Writing music scene was great though. + drama factor: high (and interesting enough to make this a plus) - a few more breaks (comedic or otherwise relieving) from the drama would have really benefitted the second half +/- WHY DID YOU DO THAT THING WITH THE PERSON?! ): it was great and horrible. Oh wait and... + WHY ENDING?! Can you please tell me what happens?!?!?! + Ok I'm still intrigued by Neil Gaiman gecko
Overall, this series is really impressing me. It's a world that is exciting to live in and I see so much potential for it to be an unforgettable favorite (honestly!) if a few things were focused and smoothed out.
BUT SRSLY PLZ: DEAR NIKKI RAE, WEN IS NEXT 1. -------------------------
* IMPORTANT NOTE - I decided to extrapolate on some of the negative points of the book for me. I really enjoyed (4 stars) this book. My intention was to give criticism that discusses what could make it better to the best of my ability as a humble reviewer. There was MUCH that I really liked (see opening of review, Sunshine review, and concluding list [yay lists])
I love this series. It’s beautiful, unique, and emotional. But, to be honest, Sun Poisoned wasn’t my favorite. The last 25% of this book was 5-star worthy for sure…but the previous 75% was only around 3 stars for me. It definitely suffered from second-book syndrome.
What made the last part of this book so good was the intensity and raw emotion that swelled from the pages. I wouldn’t say that Rae’s writing is gorgeous and flowing or anything, but the whole thing is so very human; It’s like I’m reading Sophie’s diary or something. I really liked Sunshine because of how much it made me feel, so I was disappointed when I started this one and it wasn’t as good…but eventually it became amazing, which makes me very hopeful about what Sun Damage has in store. I felt very connected to the book during the last 25% and even immediately started the third one once I flipped to the last page, because I couldn’t wait one second more without knowing what was going to happen. It’s rare that I connect to a book on such a deep level, but I really relate to Sophie’s character, and the struggles that she goes through in Sun Poisoned, especially in the second half of the book, were so real to me and made my reading experience feel very personal and almost even visceral.
Besides how much I related to this book, another favorite aspect of this series is the background characters. They’re all so fleshed out and have such different personalities. I especially love Boo and Trei, Sophie’s best friends. I didn’t think that Myles shined as much in Sun Poisoned as he did in Sunshine, but the characters in general were still a great feature of this novel and really make it special and unlike other paranormal series.
One thing that I specifically had an issue with was this big “thing” that happens in the middle of the book. It was supposed to be a very powerful moment and is really important to each of the characters’ growth from that point on. But, unfortunately, I had trouble having a strong emotional response to this event because of how the series is set up. I can’t go into a ton of detail, but I’m just going to say that something happens to one of the background characters that I really liked in the first book. I think that, if this thing had occurred during the first book (which I understand would’ve been impossible due to plot and length, but just humor me), or if I’d read the second book immediately after the first book, I would’ve had a much stronger reaction to it. It would’ve completely changed how good I thought this book was. I think that maybe, because an author probably has trouble seeing their series from the average reader’s perspective, that it’s possible Rae didn’t take into consideration that the “thing” would’ve had more impact if that character had been in the beginning of the second book more (they’re only in one scene before the “thing” happens at around the 50% mark). I just didn’t feel as connected to them, because they weren’t as important in Sun Poisoned as they were in Sunshine, so I had trouble reacting to it like I would’ve had I read the series all in one chunk.
And, like I mentioned before, I also do feel like this book somewhat suffers from second-book syndrome. Thank god there wasn’t a new love interest or anything, but I did feel like the plot was meandering and there wasn’t even really much of one at all until the last little bit. It definitely served to set up a lot of things and characters that will be extremely important in Sun Damage, but it didn’t stand on its own very well. Although I did honestly love the last 25%, so that made me feel a lot better about the whole thing and now I’m very excited to find out how the whole thing ends.
**I was given a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review**
I read the first book in this series about a month ago and wasn't able to go straight on to this one. It's always kind of hard to pick up where you left off when you go on to the second or subsequent books in a series. I had no problem falling straight back in to the story and picking everything back up with Sun Poisoned. The gang are now in New York and living in an apartment block that is paid for by Midnight the club where they now get to live their dream, performing in their band. Everything seems to finally be coming together for Sophie. Boo and Trey, her best friends are with her. Plus Miles her boyfriend with a difference is also there with them. Of course the difference we learn in book 1 is that he is a Vampire. Not a sparkling, type. Far more discreet and understated. Yet holding so much power and mysterious. I loved that. So were now seeing Sophie in her element, getting to perform and having her own bit of freedom. It's a new lifestyle here at Midnight and we get to see some of the new people Sophie meets from the mysterious and shy Ava and the total opposite Manny, lead singer of one of the biggest bands that play at Midnight. The majority of Sun Poisoned shows how Sophie's life has changed and the people she meets in her new life. She still has a few nightmares over Michael, the old and dangerous vampire from Sunshine. Yet Myles is always there to help Sophie relax and fills her in one some more information from his past, and others pasts. About half way through, the book takes a big shocker. A huge event happens which i can't even hint at, but I will say. I had the whole open mouth and running eyes thing going on again. From there on in, the book is on a far more faster pace and emotional ride. All the intense and graphic details were really hard hitting. Without saying anything at all, which is really hard. All I can say, is that everything that takes place from there on in, is so amazingly well done. It was beautifully written in a raw and detailed way. It was hard not to feel exactly what was going on with the characters, the words painted such a clear and vivid picture. Well, after such an intense and crazily, addictive final part I was so relieved I had the final book to start reading straight away. I absolutely 'needed' to continue reading and was desperate to find out what lies ahead for Sophie. I'm already half way through the final book and i'm already sucked in. So thought it best to do this review before I forget which book is which. ;) Loved this second part in the Sunshine series.
My full review (including my thoughts on the other two books in the series) can be found on my blog - Feed Your Fiction Addiction
This second book in the Sunshine series definitely lived up to the amazingness of the first book - there was no middle book syndrome with this series!!
The series follows Sophie, a teenage girl with an allergy to the sun and a whole host of psychological issues (I'll get into those more in my actual review). She spends her life avoiding people - everyone except her two best friends and band mates. When she meets Myles, at first she wants nothing to do with him, but she soon finds herself letting him in. She finds that they have a few things in common - but it doesn't take long for her to realize that Myles isn't just a regular guy.
What I loved about this series:
Issues that don't go away. As I mentioned in my review of book #1, one of Sophie's many issues is that she has trouble getting close to people and doesn't like to be touched, mostly because of a past traumatic experience with her ex-boyfriend (though there are a few other reasons as well). Well into the second book, Sophie is still fighting to overcome her fear of intimacy - it affects her interactions with Myles, even after she trusts him with her heart. This seemed so incredibly realistic to me, and I loved it. Likewise, Sophie also has trouble trusting others - this becomes a huge hurdle when, in book 2, she finds out that Myles is hiding things from her. She can't just easily forgive and forget and the repercussions are felt for the rest of the series.
Myles and Sophie. Yep, still loved them together, even when secrets and lies started to tear them apart.
Supporting characters. We got to see even more of those supporting characters that we grew to love in book 1!
Vampires! The stakes got even higher in this book. Lots of danger!!
The negatives:
I honestly can't remember anything that I didn't like from the second book. There was certainly nothing major. Sometimes I didn't like Sophie's choices, but it didn't really mar my enjoyment of the book.
If you're a fan of vampire books and you're looking for something new and different with a bit of an edge to it, definitely pick up the Sunshine series! You will not be sorry! I give book #2 5/5 Stars!

My Review
"Lies are like Poison. If you get a little in your system, it spreads until it destroys you. - Sophie"
Sun Poisoned is the second book in the Sunshine series and starts right where the first left off. This book is more about Sophie's music than the first one. Myles and Sophie's relationship is beginning to blossom under the stage lights and everyone is happy...But nothing stays great for long.
Michael is back again and he's been practicing his evil tactics in his evil layer where he worships all things evil.
We met a new character that I think we had heard a little of in 'Sunshine'. Ava. Now I don't really know how to describe Ava but she was quiet and very shy. Her personality confused me, but I don't really blame her.
We also see more of Evan who is the owner of the Midnight concert arena where Sophie performs. Evan always gave me a creepy vibe and I have to admit I didn't like him. Evan is Myles friend yet I still didn't trust him.
Sophie delves deeper into the world of Vampires and finds a lie in her relationship with Myles. She rips her relationship with Myles up and throws it in the recycling. Myles is distort while I'm screaming at Sophie for throwing away something so good.
Then an event occurs that stops my heart and literally made me bawl on the floor. But I can't tell you what happened because of spoilers...so...ummm...read it and find out.
Luckily Boo and Trie are still supportive of Sophie even when she wasn't being very nice.
Oh and by the way if you can not buy the next book straight off don't buy this book because there is a major cliff hanger at the end. So beware!
Now the reason why I gave this book four stars instead of five is because Sophie really made me angry, she was selfish and to be honest really unfair towards Myles and the rest of her friends. But they were still there for her. There was also the fact that you may have just stalled my heart when I read what you did! HOW COULD YOU? I think you crushed me. You made me cry! Those are the two reasons why I gave this book a 4 out of 5. I would recommend this book to anyone who's into Dark Paranormal
*I was given this book by Nikki Rae in exchange for a honest review*
Sophie survived her last year of high school, her mother and her never ending quest for a cure for Sophie, a vicious and near deadly attack, and gaining her first boyfriend since Jack. Barely healed and moved to New York with Boo, Trei, and Myles, she is living out her wildest dream by playing at Club Midnight with her band An Anachronism. Everything is going well, if not slightly odd, when the other shoe begins to drop. Will she make it out of this one intact? Will the truth destroy everything she has worked so hard for? Trust me, read it, you know you want to.
This is book 2 in the Sunshine series, and you most definitely should read book 1 first, these cannot be read as stand alone novels. Once again, the author draws us into the world of Sophie Jean, and this time she takes us on a roller-coaster ride of epic proportions. I became even more attached to this band of misfit characters, and I actually cried at one point and had to put the book down. The writing is even better this time around and the story will grab you from the very beginning. There were a couple of minor inconsistencies and it could have probably used another run by an editor, but they don't really distract from the story too much. In fact, the only thing I really didn't like was the cliffhanger ending. I hate them, mostly because I'm too impatient and hate waiting for the next book. In this case, the next book is available and I need find a way to get my hands on a copy because I really, really, really, want to know what happens.
Over all, I loved this book. It was better than book 1, so I hope that book 3 is even better than this one. I have been trying to think of books to compare this series to, but I'm struggling. The obvious choice would be Twilight, but that would be an insult to this series. This series blows Twilight out of the water...and not just because it doesn't have sparkling vampires. I think that perhaps, this series might remind me of the tv version of The Vampire Diaries, not the book version which is way different. The main character has her issues and she deals with them the best that she can given the cards that she's been dealt. She's surrounded by friends and family who each might know bits and pieces of her story, but it's rare that they know everything. Still, they support her and bring a richness to her story as it unfolds in your minds eye. Read the books, I'm betting you won't regret it.
