Good interesting stories covering over 200 years, I don't think the family missed any wars, good characters both lead and supporting. Excellent navel history, good details on life as it was and historical facts. An enjoyable read, thank you.
A fascinating insight into both naval history, the creation of the United States Navy and the conflicts fought by those gallant men who served her proudly through her short history. It was very difficult to tear myself away from the adventures of succeeding naval heroes of the McGann generations. Each with their own deeds of daring-do. This is probably the largest written saga that I have ever managed to finish still wishing to turn a few more pages. I normally move on in boredom after reading 70-80% of most lengthy sagas. This one kept me interested with the credible detail and research that shines through the story. A wonderful set of six books that will keep any ex-matelots (Royal Navy myself) entertained for many a day or night. Well done Christopher Nicole.
I enjoyed these stories of the McGann family from the 17 hundreds 'til the 19 forties. It was a change from the usual "nautical adventure" which consist of repeated battles, usually against the French, with lots of blood and gore but with little personal story line. The McGann stories follow the family in a historical context over 5? generations showing the eventual intertwining of US and UK relations in World War II. The character of the women were well drawn although some of the sex scenes may want to make any red bloodied male take a cold shower.
I gave up on this series after about 10 pages. At that point we had a handsome Irish smuggler, his beautiful girlfriend, the squires ie, but ugly daughter, her beautiful blond best friend, bot soaking wet clinging clothes, and the suites son. The son is an RN officer who takes offense with the hero being with the girls and attack with his sword. The grass the sword bare handed, dis are the son, and break the sword over his knee.
This didn't have promise of a good historical novel..
I feel as if I just read the same story 5 times… Sailor meets girl, meets another girl … sex with both results in one of them getting pregnant. He goes off to fight in the significant naval engagement of the time, gets hurt whilst performing a heroic act comes back and marries. Ho Hum… Lots of minor technical and historic inaccuracies add to my rating
A gripping collection full of high seas drama and historical depth. The Complete McGann Naval Adventures offers six well written stories packed with action, strategy, and richly drawn characters. Christopher Nicole captures the spirit of naval warfare with vivid detail and strong pacing. The cover reflects the classic tone of the series, giving a true sense of the adventure within. A great pick for fans of historical naval fiction.
Often when a series jumps generation to generation it's near impossible to keep the readers invested with all the new characters. That is not at all the case here. Each new McGann had their own story to tell, but they were still invariably McGanns and I loved reading about each and every one, even if they were "the worst shits" sometimes.
It led the reader through several generations of a hero family during the revolutionary war in the US followed by insights of the first and second WW naval history. It is well written and easy to read as the author Christopher Nicole did his home work before putting it to paper.
Thoroughly enjoyed the whole box set. 6 most thrilling adventure books linked together to make a naval adventure box set that was extremely difficult to put down even for a second. Very exiting and well written, thrilling on every page from the first to the last. Well done Christopher Nicole.
I have really enjoyed this book collection especially as it started in my hometown Tramore Co. Waterford Ireland. It's a well written collection with so many characters and twists you really not sure what is coming.
So anybody thinking about reading it I would recommend you do.
These were the best set of books that I have ever read. The story of a number of generations of thevsame family over so many years, and at a time in history that so much action took place, and the intimate way the story of the families took so many twists and turns was remarkable writing.
Interesting, but explicit series of books that take members of the family from the Revolutionary War through World War II. Generally easy to read and fast moving, these stories are not for everyone.
A wonderful and well researched journey through the history of the United States as seen through the eyes of a Navy family. A terrific adventure of heroes.
