Die Zweitjahresklasse der Clearwater High bereitet sich auf eine ungewöhnliche Abschlussprüfung vor. Worum es geht? Das verraten die Lehrer noch nicht. Bevor es losgeht, wartet noch eine Herausforderung auf Pumajunge Carag: Im Auftrag des Rats der Wandler soll Carag zu einer Gruppe von jungen Woodwalkern Kontakt aufnehmen, die sich „Club der Fabeltiere“ nennt. Mit aufsehenerregenden Teilverwandlungen können sie die Gestalt von Einhörnern, Drachen und anderen fantastischen Wesen annehmen - und sie scheuen nicht davor zurück, ihre Tricks in der Öffentlichkeit vorzuführen und damit das Geheimnis der gesamten Gestaltwandlerwelt aufs Spiel zu setzen. Carag hat alle Hände voll zu tun, um den Fabeltierclub zu bändigen, und bemerkt erst spät, dass dem Rat der Wandler noch eine viel größere Gefahr droht. Denn dort gewinnt eine alte Feindin immer mehr an Einfluss.

Ich bin Jahrgang 1970, habe in Frankfurt Amerikanistik, Anglistik und Germanistik studiert und ein Volontariat im Lektorat des Campus-Verlages absolviert. Mehrere Jahre lang war ich erst freie Journalistin, dann Redakteurin des Magazins changeX, das sich mit Wandel in Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft beschäftigt. Mit meinem Mann und 2006 geborenen Sohn lebe ich in der Nähe von München und arbeite als Autorin und Lektorin. Wenn ich nicht gerade Bücher schreibe (meine Lieblingsbeschäftigung), halte ich Schreibworkshops und Lesungen.

Veröffentlicht habe ich unter meinem richtigen Namen neben unzähligen Artikeln (viele davon in der Süddeutschen Zeitung) und Kurzgeschichten (z.B in Anthologien von Carlsen, cbj/Random House und Ueberreuter) zahlreiche Sachbücher für Kinder, Jugendliche und Erwachsene, die meine breit gefächerten Interessen widerspiegeln. Seit der Geburt meines Sohnes schreibe ich auch Bilder- und Vorlesebücher.

Unter dem Pseudonym Katja Brandis habe ich eine ganze Reihe von Jugendromanen verfasst, hauptsächlich Abenteuerromane, Thriller und Fantasy ab 12, wie zum Beispiel Gepardensommer (Ueberreuter Verlag), Ruf der Tiefe, Vulkanjäger sowie Und keiner wird dich kennen (alle Beltz & Gelberg). Unter dem Namen Siri Lindberg ist mein erster Erwachsenenroman (Fantasy) beim Piper Verlag herausgekommen.

Als ich das letzte Mal nachgezählt habe, bin ich auf über 50 veröffentlichte Bücher gekommen. Hat mich auch ein bisschen erstaunt. Aber wenn man sein Hobby zum Beruf gemacht hat, dann freut man sich Montag früh darauf, dass die Arbeitswoche nun wieder losgeht …

Yet another one of these books read. And this… this was slightly different. In fact, it reminded me even more of Harry Potter books here.

Because even though Carag is still this special person (Harry Potter insert), he actually struggles a bit. He gets so much dumped on him, both school where the end term examinations get closer and the woodwalker council gives him more and more to do. It puts a strain on his relationships with his friends, and above all… with his girlfriend.

I felt that I put at least a lil bit of realism in here in this fantasy book, because no matter how awesome you are… you only have so many hours a day and so much time on your hands. Or paws. Depending on what form you currently have. *lol*

I also liked that we got to meet up a little bit with the Seawalkers characters that I’ve read about in their own series of books, even if it was briefly. Clearwater High is after all just one of many woodwalker/seawalker/skywalker schools, so it would make sense that they’d have contact with each other. Even if the reason for their contact this time was quite upsetting.

Another good thing was that this book also dealt with this whole culture around internet influencers and trolls. Since the Club of Fabled Animals is doing their thing JUST because they wanna be famous influencers online. That’s their only reason. They don’t even think about the ramifications of exposing the entire society of various woodwalkers. As long as they get famous and get a lot of clicks online that’s all they care about. It’s just as braindead and dumb as the internet actually is. So I actually liked that. And I wonder how that will all play out as we continue on.

Same thing with the Seekers of Truth, who are regular humans. They remind me so much of those fanatical religious people that want to find and stop anyone that does not follow the narrow norm they’ve set up. So that was also a really good addition to the story.

I’ve said before that Katja Brandis is really good at writing action with her characters, it is a strength of hers for sure. But there was no big battle at the end in this book, to my surprise. Instead there was a snow blizzard and a rescue. Not all animals do well in a snowstorm as harsh as a blizzard, and we got to see that here. It was a really nice touch. Even though the bad guy Lydia Lennox did her bad guy stuff (did she ever), she did it more in a political way, and not so much in a hands on battle way. But having read the earlier books where she’s a part of the story, I’m not surprised. It is how she does things.

Yeah, this was actually slightly better than the previous one. Even though these aren’t the strongest of fantasy books, it’s quite entertaining, and with the added stuff? Yeah. This held up quite well!
