Some scars can’t be hidden. Sheriff Stuart Layton has plenty of those, courtesy of an attack that left him doubting himself as a lawman. But in Bailey McKenna he recognizes a different kind of hurt. That unspoken understanding has him opening his door to the mysterious, elusive young woman again and again, hoping she’ll tell him what she’s running from.
Bailey has spent years searching for the rancher who put her through hell. She never saw his face, but she’s convinced he’s somewhere in Powder River. Now, suddenly, she has terrifying proof of how close he is. This time, Stuart is by her side, determined to protect her—and find retribution for himself. But will that be enough to fend off a killer waiting to finish what he started?
B.J. Daniels started her life in Houston, Texas, before her family moved to Montana at age five. She grew up in a cabin in the Gallatin Canyon near Big Sky and later on Hebgen Lake near West Yellowstone. Because of her love for Montana, most of her books are set there. Born into a storytelling family, all she'd ever wanted to do was write stories. After a career as an award-winning newspaper journalist, she wrote and sold 37 short stories before she finally wrote her first book, ODD MAN OUT. Since then she has won numerous awards including a career achievement award for romantic suspense. She lives in Montana with her husband, Parker, two Springer Spaniels. When she isn't writing, she quilts, boats and. makes rope/fabric baskets. She always reads, loving to lose herself in a good book.
One thing I like the most about this author's stories is that they are a blend of crime, suspense, and cowboy romance. I was looking forward to this one because it has the Sheriff as a lead and Bailey, the McKenna daughter. I knew it was going to be a good one due to the foreshadowing in the last book.
I love the way these two characters work off of each other. I did get a bit annoyed with Bailey as she stretched the truth for so long and kept a huge secret for years. Instead, she chooses to become a jerk and shut off from everyone. But patience and love are the key and once the truth comes out, the suspense cranks up!
Daniels plies us with murderous crime and suspense sequences that crank up the tension. The ending is wild and while I want to say it was unexpected, it was more of an anticipation. Something was just not right with some of those people she was dealing with.
The romance is sweet and mostly closed door but these two are beautifully matched and Daniels delivers on the push/pull that tugs your heartstrings. Stuart is a sweetheart!
With her trademark Montana stories, River Wild is an awesome blend of the things we love in a cowboy romance. If you have read the other stories in the series, you will not want to miss this one!! That ending will leave you wondering what’s to come!

This book has three of my favorite things, Cowboys, a romance and a mystery! It’s a sweet closed door romance but the mystery drives the plot and makes it so good! The tension builds to the end with an unpredictable ending. Of course the Montana setting adds to the appeal!
Bailey McKenna harbors many secrets and frequently visits Sheriff Stuart Layton's house at night. They sit together, share beers, and Stuart patiently waits for her to reveal the reasons behind her troubled demeanor. Stuart has harbored feelings for Bailey for many years, and although she appears to reciprocate, her past is filled with secrets
When a girl is murdered who bears a striking resemblance to Bailey, she realizes it's time to confide in Stuart about an incident from 12 years prior. She had narrowly escaped being killed at her father's barbecue, unable to identify her assailant who was shrouded by a hood. Having spent 12 years searching for him, she entrusts Stuart with a list of suspects, and together, they embark on a mission to find the man before Bailey becomes his next victim.
This story unfolds with gripping suspense, keeping the reader on edge. It also offers a chance to reconnect with the lives of the other McKenna's and the Stafford family members.
Good book about two people scarred inside and out. Stuart became the sheriff of Powder River after his father's death. But a recent attack left him doubting his abilities to carry out his job. He considers resigning and leaving Powder River, which also means leaving Bailey behind.
Bailey was assaulted twelve years earlier by an unknown rancher. She never told anyone about the attack but spent the years since then searching for him. She feels that she might be closing in on him when a young woman who resembles her turns up dead.
The suspense of this story kept me intrigued from start to finish, as did the developing relationship between Stuart and Bailey. They've known each other all their lives, and Stuart has been in love with her for years. Bailey has feelings for him, too, but until she can get past the attack, she can't find a way to move on. She knows that Stuart is there for her and frequently shows up at his house late at night, looking for comfort. He knows she is running from something and is determined to be there when she is ready to share.
The murder of the woman, Willow, is the catalyst that drives Bailey to confess all. Her pain, fear, and anger leap off the page as she describes what happened to Stuart. Although previously ready to resign, Stuart won't quit until he finds justice for her. They join forces to continue her investigation and grow closer as they spend more time together. I liked seeing their walls begin to drop and their understanding of what each has experienced strengthen their feelings. But even if she survives, will Bailey be able to put the past behind her and accept the love Stuart longs to give her?
The suspense of the story was great. The intensity escalates quickly from Bailey's feelings of being watched and the discovery of Willow's body. The twists and turns as suspects came and went and threats intensified kept me guessing to the end. The final confrontation was a nail-biter with a twist I didn't see coming.
There are also continuing threads that run throughout the series. Holly Jo, Holden McKenna's ward, begins settling into her new life. Puppy love creates some complications and lessons learned. Charlotte Stafford hasn't returned to Powder River or responded to anyone who tries to contact her, while Holden continues waiting for her to return. CJ Stafford is in jail, awaiting trial, and trying to figure out how to get out of it. Other characters from previous books appear as we catch up on everyone's lives.
It was tough for Bailey McKenna to come back home to Powder Crossing Montana after twelve years where she was attacked on her family ranch. Her father Holden McKenna had given a very big party on the ranch when the attack had taken place, but Bailey had kelp it a secret for fear of shame. She immediately left town to attend college in a different city. While she was gone, she constantly searched for answers as to who and why she was attacked on her own ranch.
Bailey felt as if her attacker was still stalking her and leaving threating notes to scare her. Once in Power Crossing she immediately looked up her old friend Sheriff Stuart Layton, they had grown up together and Stuart had taken over the Sheriff position that his father had held. Since Bailey didn’t report the attack to the police or her family, no one knew that there was an attacker in the small community where everyone knew everyone’s business. Bailey was determined to find out who had attacked her no matter what the outcome was. She was a McKenna and wasn’t afraid to keep searching.
One of the young girls in Powder Crossing, about the same age as Bailey was when she was attacked, was discovered brutally attacked just out of town. Sheriff Layton didn’t remember an attack in Powder Crossing before and all the town’s people are talking about it. Bailey saw the similarity of her attack and the one of this young girls. This proves to Bailey that her attacker was still her.
Bailey had to tell someone about her attack 12 years ago, someone she could trust with her secret. Stuart Layton had to take off his Sheriff hat and listen to the full story of Bailey’s. Bailey had compiled a list of the attendees at her father’s party and tried to eliminate one by one those on the list that couldn’t have attacked her, thus leaving some that might have.
Sheriff Layton now had to investigate the new killer attack while keeping it a secret to the community about Bailey's attacker. Can he find the attacker in time before she is attacked again?
B.J.Daniels weaves the story with hope, suspense, danger and true love. Family members come together and are pulled apart to find out that Bailey had been attacked. Can she ever find happiness again since she feels like she is damaged goods, can she ever trust someone again. The McKenna family have many interwoven problems and situations that confront them everyday and Bailey’s is just one more to deal with.
River Wild by B.J. Daniels Everyone has a secret. Some of them are deadly… Some scars can’t be hidden. This is Bailey McKenna and Sheriff Stuart Layton's story. BAILEY MCKENNA HADN’T realized it was so late. She looked up from her laptop, surprised to find that some of the library’s lights had already been turned off, leaving pockets of darkness. She loved libraries, their smell, their solitude, the silence as heavy as the books lining the walls. Seeing that the doctor was waiting for a reply, he shrugged and said, “As well as can be expected. Life goes on. I have a job to do.” She didn’t like his comment, he noticed at once. “Keeping busy helps. I just had a kidnapping case, a thirteen-year-old.” He had saved one life, though, and had done his job to the best of his ability, which he didn’t feel was saying much. When a woman is murdered in town who bears a striking resemblance to Bailey, she's running scared, and she comes to Stuart and finally confesses what those deep secrets are. This book has danger, suspense , romance and family drama! River Wild by B.J. Daniels is a 4 star book. I recommend you read these books in the order they were written. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Dark Side of the River (Powder River Book 1) by B.J. Daniels
River Strong (A Powder River Novel Book 2) by B.J. Daniels
River Justice (A Powder River Novel Book 3) by B.J. Daniels
I've been waiting for this book for quite a while. Stuart has been a favorite character of mine since I first met him. He's loyal, steadfast and tries so hard to be a good sheriff but he's been in love with Bailey for years and while he continues to solve various crimes in Powder River, he only seems to get pieces of her when she stops by his home occasionally to share a beer and talk at all hours of the night. He knows she harbors deep secrets, but she won't share them. When a woman is murdered in town who bears a striking resemblance to Bailey, she's running scared, and she comes to Stuart and finally confesses what those deep secrets are. Together they will try to solve this murder and also keep Bailey from being the next victim. Maybe they will finally get that HEA for themselves in the process. They sure deserve it! The other reason I love this book is there are multiple story lines of other characters and if you've been reading this series, you want to know what is happening with them! There is young love happening with Holly Jo; where has Charlotte gone and what will CJ do in prison? Fascinating stuff! In this book there is danger, action, romance and family drama! It makes for a book that I read in 24 hours and still I wanted it to continue! Can't wait for the next installment!
Thank you to Net Galley and Harlequin and the Hive for a review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Characters: 7/10 My downfall for this book was that I did not read the previous books in the series. While this acted like any other interconnected series where reading previous books is not necessary to understand the plot of this book, I think having a bigger connection to the other characters in the book would have helped me care more about the other characters.
Bailey and Stuart felt like very well rounded characters. I really felt a connection to them in the story. Bailey's sleuthing was particularly interesting to me.
Atmosphere: 8/10 This story felt like a very authentic, Montana ranch story. It fulfilled all my desires for a cowboy romance at the time of reading.
Writing: 7/10 The author did an excellent job at writing this who done it story. I truly had no idea who was murdering these girls. The author did a good job at creating suspicion for many of the members of the town.
Plot: 8/10 Again, the plot of figuring out who murdered the girls was incredibly intriguing.
Intrigue: 8/10
Logic 9/10
Enjoyment: 8/10 This was my first BJ Daniels story. I'm looking forward to trying more of her books in the future!
Sheriff Stuart Layton is tasked with the investigation into a local woman, Willow, who was found dead in the river. He was planning on resigning after a previous incident that eft him feeling not worthy of protecting his citizens. Now after the murder and the current threats against the woman he loves, Bailey McKenna, he has no choice but to find the woman’s killer or Bailey could be next. Bailey’s father is still dealing with the loss of the woman he loved, but will Caroline Stafford ever return to her family and him? There are several moving parts to this twisted story as Caroline’s son is in prison and using any means possible to be released, no matter who he has to threaten. When Stuart finally learns why Bailey is so worried, his primary concern is finding out who is targeting her and who most likely killed Willow. The family dynamics between the McKenna and Stafford families as well as the other local ranchers is interwoven into the mystery surrounding Caroline’s leaving, Willow’s murder and Bailey’s continued and personal pursuit of the killer. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)
First, in order to avoid character confusion or bewilderment, B.J. Daniels Power River series is a series I highly recommend you read in the order in which they were written. There's a lot of backstory in this novel, and in my opinion, it's backstory you should have prior to the beginning of this novel.
Second, a major part of this novel may prove to be a trigger for some readers, as it deals with an off-screen, 12-year-old abduction, rape, mutilation, and murder, and the possibility of it happening again.
What I did like about this novel is that the characters are well thought out, their individual personalities and issues are well-examined, though not often easily explained. This is at its heart, a romance novel with more than one unrequited love between 2 couples, and I enjoyed how the story unfolded. There's a little bit of everything in Ms. Daniels latest novel, romance, mystery, suspense, murder, past criminal activity, a second chance at love, and while there's an HEA ending, it also has a bit of cliffhanger ending. All in all, a very good, engrossing, and complex read.
I voluntarily read an advanced ready copy of the novel. The opinions stated are my own.
This one just felt . . . off. A large cast of characters, which normally doesn't bother me, but in this case that 'large cast' was all over the place. Switching between them was awkward and often felt rough. There are places where things don't make sense, such as when Bailey is telling Stuart about her assault she says her attacker cut the rope around her ankles with no mention of him cutting the rope around her hands or tying her ankles again after the assault, yet on the next page her hands are free to cut the rope around her ankles. This whole section makes no sense. There are quite a few dropped letters (no for not) and ". . . just like (I) was . . .," for example. Or swapped letters, "she'd for she's," for example. The whole story, especially toward the end, felt rushed both in the writing and the editing. Editing to add one last thing, because I almost forgot - the proper term for what Stuart was doing to Bailey's . . . nipples is laving, NOT lathing. A lathe is a machine for shaping metal or wood. When I read that, I honestly couldn't believe that the author AND editor let it slip by. That's bad. Really bad.
Everyone has a secret. Some of them are deadly...Some scars can’t be hidden. Sheriff Stuart Layton has plenty of those, courtesy of an attack that left him doubting himself as a lawman. But in Bailey McKenna he recognizes a different kind of hurt.
RIVER WILD is a suspenseful drama about Sheriff Stuart Layton finding the murder of woman connected to Bailey McKenna, and she is a harboring a secret that no one knows about. Not even her family. This time Stuart stands by her side, determined to protect her, but will it be enough to fend off a killer waiting to finish what he started?
BJ Daniels is a mastermind with RIVER WILD with her subplots that keeps a reader occupied with the family drama while following Bailey and Stuart in their search for the killer. Nail-gripping and hard-to-put-down adventure in the beautiful Montana wilds. I received this complimentary advanced copy from the author, and this is my honest review.
I love this series and this book! BJ never lets me down. This book can be read as a standalone. However, I do recommend that you read the series in order.
This is Bailey and Stuart’s story. Talk about two people with baggage. They both have quite a bit.
Sheriff Stuart Layton carries physical and emotional scars from being attacked. Bailey McKenna also carries emotional and physical scars from being attacked. She’s held it all in for 12 years! Stuart has been in love with Bailey for many years. But because of all the things that happened to them, they just didn’t know how to get past it. Until Bailey finally started to opening up to Stuart. Now that he understands he can help her find her attacker. Then will they be able to move on? I can’t give that part away. You’ll have use some of that Christmas money and pick yourself up a copy. This one releases on 12/24/2024
Thank you BJ for this ARC in return for my honest review .
I enjoyed reading the “Powder River Series.” I missed the 3rd book in this series “River Justice.” Bailey is in Powder River searching for a rancher who almost killed her. She meets Stuart who is the sheriff in Powder River. 12 years ago, while Bailey was at her father’s barbecue she is almost killed. Stuart and Bailey begin spending time together at Stuart’s house. Stuart is a bit uneasy he knows that Bailey has secrets that she is keeping from him and he is developing feelings for her. When a young lady is murdered Bailey knows that it is time reveal her past to Stuart. It’s been 12 years that she has been searching for the man who almost took her life. Stuart vows to protect and be there for Bailey and find the suspect that he and Bailey are searching for before the suspect finds Bailey.
I received an ARC via NetGalley, Harlequin Trade Publishing and Canary Street Press and I am leaving my review voluntarily.
Stuart and Bailey both have scars. Both from different happenings in their lives.
Stuart has been in love with Bailey for a long time. Bailey hides how she feels but when she wants to get away she always runs to Stuart..
Stuart is trying to decide if he wants to continue being sheriff but when Bailey tells him what happened to her twelve years ago he vows vengeance!
As both are investigating and Bailey keeps getting threatened they become closer.
Will they find who hurt her twelve years below and will they finally declare their love for each other.
This is a fast paced, page turning book. I had to keep going to see what happened next.
As always I was surprised by who was behind everything. I love how you really never know til you are told..This is one of the many reasons I love B J Daniel's books!
The author writes exciting page tuners with excellent characters. Sheriff Stuart Layton is ready to resign and leave Powder Crossing. He is still having nightmares about his last case, where he was forced to shoot a crazed woman. And the woman that he has been in love with since they were teens , Bailey McKenna, keeps him at arms length. But before he can hand in that resignation, there is a another murder, that it is connected to Baily, that Bailey was assaulted years ago and the culprit is still at large. But this isn't the only drama that is happening between the McKenna and Stafford families. More secrets.
I voluntarily read an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. The copy that I read needed more editing, which is very unusual for this author. I assume that it was tidied up before the final release.
This was a book that makes secrets and scars can more makes a life more know . Bailey McKenna was one who had secrets and scars. Sheriff Stuart Layton had feelings for Bailey McKenna he loved her for the same things he was dealing with secrets and scars. Her scars were old just like his. But she wanted to end her nightmares go away after and her 12 year hunt behind her and make the person for what he did. But do they find and make him pay for what he did? Do Stuart and Bailey make a life together? B. J wrote a fantastic story that I couldn't put down.
This is the fourth book in the Power River series. Once again BJ Daniel gives us another suspense book with a lot of twist and turns in it. This book is finally about Sheriff Stuart Layton’s and Bailey McKenna’s stories. Stuart had doubts about being a sheriff after his attack. Bailey has a 12 year secret. Can Stuart help Bailey feel safe to share the secret before it’s too late now a woman turn up dead looking a lot like Bailey. Are Stuart doubts too much to overcome. All I will say is this book definitely must read because it won’t let you down.
This is a good book. The two main characters are Bailey and Stuart. Bailey is running trying to figure out who is tracking her. Stuart is the local sheriff. Bailey is coming to Stuart’s door again and again. Stuart wants her to tell him what is going on. A body shows up near the river, she looks like Bailey. Bailey and Stuart try to find her killer. There is an attraction between them. They started dating. They fall in love
Powder River and the two main families are quite the engaging tale. I have enjoyed all of the books so far and am looking forward to the next one. I really enjoyed getting to know the main couple in this one. Lots of trauma. Many nail-biting moments. Thanks to the publisher for providing a copy via NetGalley. My review is voluntary.
there were a lot of characters that sometimes it was hard to keep track of.
there was also a discrepancy in this book, it mentioned that Charlotte was looking forward to finally meeting her future daughter-in-law, Birdie, but at the end of book #3 (River Justice), Birdie had actually saved Charlotte's life.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This is another fantastic western romantic suspense novel by BJ Daniels! I think her Powder River series is her best series yet. The book is a page-turner, full of family feuds and a mystery plus opposing secondary characters. The romance is a slow burn, as the hero fights to win the heroine's trust. I highly recommend this book!
I really enjoyed this book. It was romantic and suspenseful. I read the books in this series and I'm really glad I did. The ending was better than I expected. I look forward to reading the next one. I'm grateful that netgalley and the publishers let me read this in exchange for an honest review.
This is a gripping and suspenseful romance novel that will captivate fans of intense, small-town mysteries and second-chance love stories, particularly those who enjoy stories about overcoming trauma, seeking justice, and finding redemption in the face of danger and uncertainty.
This had small town, mystery, gripping characters overcoming trauma. I do wish I would have read the other book in the series first but I still overall enjoyed the story very much. Will definitely read more from author
This is an excellant story very impressed this story makes one sit on the edge of the chair . When i had to put the book aside for a few minutes. I couldn't wait to get back to it. Hope to real next book.
BJ Daniels books are so exciting! I’m loving this series! They’re suspenseful with romance mixed in.Please check out BJ Daniels books. I doubt you’ll be disappointed.
