River finally has the opportunity to escape her torturous life when the news that Onix Academy is reopening for the gifted again. She believes that it's her last chance to find her gift and to take vengeance on the one who wronged her.
When arriving at the academy River meets Miles, Westly, and Dalton, the three future leaders of Talleymen. They are the most gifted and hottest men she has ever seen, but little does she know they are on a mission and she is their target.
Will these three men end up helping River to discover the secrets that surround her, or will they be the ones that burn her down?
The idea here wasn’t terrible but the execution was severely flawed. Juvenile dialogue mixed with shallow plot and poor pacing makes this hard for me to want to continue the series.
~ RH no MM ~ virgin/savior h ~ light bully ~ academy
☑️ scars, torture, violence against h, abusive relationship, needs editing
✅ no cheating, no mm, no pregnancy (so far)
⚠️ SA of h not by H, possible death of prominent character
No pressure, I see I’m the first reviewer. I’ll try to be gentle in my critique knowing this is the author’s first work. There’s going to be SPOILERS. Like most books, there’s parts I loved and parts I didn’t.
1. I enjoyed the heroines character. River was smart, while not seeming like a know it all. She wasn’t a pushover when it came to the guys until after the bonds formed. I appreciated that she had some resistance after the bullying. I loved that she was playing her abuser, and could be soft and strong at the same time.
2. The harem was great. There’s some ow drama but no touching or cheating. Now, Miles is mine! Who doesn’t love an absolute psycho stalker willing to kill for you? I LOVED his possessiveness and OTT protective attitude. Unfortunately he fell victim to the disappearing harem member problem, where he had an instant connection to River and became more of a secondary character.
West was just ok, I don’t feel like I got enough from him, especially the heart to heart with River was just so short. I enjoyed his slight character progression from fun and fake to safety blanket. My problem was Miles though, bc he was initially who she felt safe with, and then it became West, with Miles in the background just hanging out.
Dalton- oh boy. He just ticked me off and I never warmed up to him, except for his “I’ll lock you up to keep you safe” attitude because I’m just into that OTT possessiveness. There weren’t any scenes between him and River that progressed their relationship, it was all insta forgiveness after the bonds were in place. He said some really unforgivable things to River that were never addressed or groveled for. He let her get set on fire, both him and West, and we didn’t get a huge grovel.
3. Xavier the villain, I’m having fun with him! He’s great. Smart and tricky and I’m very into the whole non con forced breeding trope. I just don’t understand why he waited to smex her. He said “she wasn’t ready”. Um, what kind of true villain cares about that? I would have actually preferred she wasn’t a virgin because none of the guys were, and I was VERY disappointed by who popped her cherry.
Things that dropped stars:
1. This definitely needs editing. There’s numerous incorrect words, I highlighted some but gave up after awhile. There’s tense changes, incorrect capitalization, comma and period placement.
2. I was really confused by Miles mute status. We were told he’s mute, and then he’s not.
3. The boys plans to get information from River didn’t make sense. The first plan didn’t work because they basically got her drunk and humiliated her after starting to build trust. Then they thought if they bullied her she would turn to them and confess all her secrets? Why would she trust you at all? They weren’t very smart.
4. The use of bonds to form insta connections instead of dialogue. I often felt like the dialogue was more of a rough draft that needed fleshing out. So we went from lighting River on fire to group sex in 30 pages.
5. The group scene I had the hardest time with. First, it was her first time and tying her up was too much. I hated that Dalton took the lead and her v card when just 30 pages ago he was bullying her and they had no relationship. It should have been Miles. It’s also hard to believe Miles would just sit and watch after initially being very JP. Dalton should have been in a director role and gone last.
6. Too many kinks. When you have praise, degradation, edging, bondage, pain and add Daddy (shudder) it doesn’t work, especially for 23 year olds. More description, less kink.
For a first book I enjoyed the typical plot and despite the issues I’m looking forward to reading the second book.

“Resentment” by TJ. Anger has been a highly anticipated read for me as the author is a close friend of mine. Knowing Anger has allowed me to watch this story within her blossom into a vivid novel. I had the privilege of witnessing Anger talk about and write the novel over several months with such passion, so to see her creative drive come to life is so exciting!
One of my favorite quotes from a different book I read a while back reads as follows: “I would want people to talk and write about how the book made them feel, what it reminded them of, and if it changed their thoughts on anything.” So, let me use this quote as my review guide.
How the book made me feel: This story had my mind spiraling. I myself felt resentment just as the main character did toward her enemies. I felt torn between which mate I liked best and who I think is her actual mate. I was suspicious of some characters and even of plot lines because this story is so enriched with foreshadowing. I felt the steaminess, the longing, and the shock factor. I was continuously reading in between the lines because Anger’s writing is packed with clues that herald the ending and the next novel in this series. At the end of the book I felt my heart racing. I even admittedly got emotional over the climax and ending, but also over the fact that my friend accomplished a dream of hers to write a book and she did so wonderfully.
What the book reminded me of: This book reminded me of a few book/movie series. I was reminded of a mixture between Harry Potter, X-Men, Avengers, and Wednesday, but the book definitely has its own uniqueness brought out by the multiple and various character archetypes, and of course, the smut factor. This book reads like a movie to me in my head. The vivid writing allowed me to see exactly what each POV was seeing, feeling, and battling. Very detailed and graphic; perfect and necessary for a book like this, and it was very well done by Anger.
How the book changed my thoughts: Firstly, based on each character’s archetypes and character development, my thoughts changed on my favorite mate and who the true mate could be. I especially enjoyed the character development of Westley which changed my opinion over him from a negative to a positive one. This book also taught me that I enjoy smut plots better than I thought I did. The reason being is because this book has a beautiful balance between smut and plot. Often times I don’t enjoy books with no plot and only smut. I definitely am someone who needs a generous amount of plot to compliment the sexual material.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The talents of imagination and storytelling sometimes do not go hand in hand. Sometimes one can only possess one. Anger, however, possess both. Her imagination is profuse with details and she reveals them strategically, rigorously, and effectively.
I really enjoyed the story. It has a good storyline, if not slightly predictable. The characters are good and the action is there. The romance seemed to happen really fast.
But my main problem is the writing. It needs a really, really good edit. It reads more like a rough draft. There are grammar errors all over the place and typos. At one point it felt like the author was using voice to text as it was so jumbled and words were missing in sentences. I understand editors are expensive, especially for indie authors but maybe have a friend proof read or someone make editing notes. It was very distracting while reading and I know some readers would dnf a book for that reason alone.
With that being said, I’m committed and will be reading the next book in the series. Hopefully the writing improves. M
Does this book have issues ? Yes the writing is a little tough to get through but the story was entertaining to read. It was frustrating at times when she is supposed to be portraying as a “strong willed FMC” but she gives into the guys so easily. Just because you can feel emotions through a bond ( that was forced on you) doesn’t mean to forgive them. The guys tell their life story and she’s like “all is forgiven”. Truly upsetting but over all a fun read
I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in this series. River is a great character, and the boys are only briefly mean to her (vicariously through a third party) before they realised the error of their ways. Can't wait for the next book to find out what happens next!
This book was good I just wish they groveled more they did some messed up stuff . I kinda felt like the twords the end of the book everything started happening to fast like it was rushed and the cliffhanger was not cool river has been through so much
This was a really really good debut, I absolutely loved it! I was a bit worried half way through but then it all came together. That was a bit of an ouchie cliffhanger but not as bad as some! Can't wait for book 2 😊
