He was a laureate of the independent Tarlan Prize, the M. Auezov Literary Prize and the State Prize of the Republic of Kazakhstan, awarded the Badge of Honor and Kurmet orders.

Sain Muratbekov the winner of numerous literary prizes in Kazakhstan, is well - known for his novellas and stories that depict the difficult life of the Kazakh aul, the day - to - day tribulations and labours of the lowly , simple folk : the rural intelligentsia , shepherds and schoolchildren alike.

During Muratbekov's life, his works were among the most widely read of all the Kazakh writers . My Little Sister , his first collection of stories , appeared in 1961, and was followed by further collections, The Aul Lights (1964), Niva (1967), The House of the Newly - weds (1968), Wild Apple Tree (1972) and others.

Interestingly, almost every one of Muratbekov's stories is a tale of human moral aspiration and ascendancy, without a hint of preaching or flamboyancy. Thanks to this approach , Muratbekov found the key to opening the hearts of all his readers.

Each new work by Sain Muratbekov was greeted as a literary and social event in Soviet Kazakh literature and drama.

Muratbekov's works have been translated into many of the World's languages, but the writer gained fame following the release in 1976 of his largely autobiographical novella , The Smell of the Wormwood, which describes the life of a boy Ayan , who awaits the return of his father from the war . Despite the difficult times , the bitter aroma of wormwood was the child's symbol of fathers and sons who have left for the frontlines.
