Hiroya Oku (奥浩哉 Oku Hiroya, born September 16, 1967 in Fukuoka, Fukuoka) is a mangaka who is the creator of Gantz, Zero-One and HEN, all of which have been serialized in Young Jump. He has finished working on his most renowned manga, Gantz, which began in July 2000. His manga often contain explicit violence and gore, as well as sexual situations.
He won the second prize of the Youth Manga Awards in 1988, under the penname Yahiro Kuon.
He designed a character for Namco Bandai's Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 fighting game, Soulcalibur IV named Shura.
Its stupid how the survivors kei, masaru, and kishimoto have not come up with someway yet, to communicate when they are outside of gantz, i mean there are cell phones, and they didn't even think of taking each other numbers. They didn't try to experiment with the weapons, and radar, and x-ray gun, and the net gun outside of the world of gantz, which they sorely need since they lack the experience needed to face gantz's sudden, and terribly dangerous, and extremely tricky tests!
This is what I'm talking about. Took awhile but things are starting to pick up. Big bird ain't playing and he wants Kei dead. So the boy does what he does best. Get's the fuck out of dodge while still fucking shit up. The final moments of this "boss" battle are great and really lead into the real world fuck ups.
What I liked: Much faster paced, Kei growing a spine (tho he a asshole), we get some great fighting moments, and a build up to a ending that's about to explode. I liked almost all of this quickly paced racey volume of Gantz. This is when the series begins to grow and get more and more exciting.
What I didn't like: Still a lot of unnecessary fan-service but least all the girls are hot?
Gantz is getting to the good stuff and we're about to get better and better. I really love Gantz and what it becomes and we about to get to it. Okay short review, but yeah, this series rocks!
Just when I start thinking the story might finally rise above the juvenile nonsense… cue disappointed sigh. This series and I are in a full-blown love/hate relationship. It’s a product of the early 2000s. Back when edgy meant throwing in every problematic trope and calling it bold. If you're looking for violence, a dose of casual homophobia, and some unapologetic misogyny, this one’s got you covered. Oh, and this volume? Basically a silent film. It feels like a cheat when most of the pages are just people panting and weird bird aliens cawing.
Kei's hormonal struggles continue amongst more alien confrontations...character deaths...and cat target practice.. The awarding of the points at the end of each hunt is just the cherry on top of this weird ass cake
Really fast paced. I love the art and the action. Seeing Kei have to fight on his own was fun. I laugh so hard when Gantz comes up with such rude names for them and includes a snarky comment when he gives them the score. Kei is an immature, horny, and hormonal little shit so hopefully he grows out of it as the story progresses.

And that's some character development for Kurono! Damn, he shot the bird boss in mid-air was so badass. The most important thing is he defeated the aliens without a suit. He got 38 points in a single mission. In Gantz, you must get 100 points to be free again.
Why the hell do the aliens spend so much time standing around doing nothing. If they actually made a concerted effort to actually use their abilities, the death count for the game participants would be much higher. It doesn't make sense for Kei to have survived the events in this volume, except that he has been defined as the main character, and therefore he survives. If the bird aliens had just used their sonic attacks when there were six of them surrounding him, he would have been dead. His ridiculous escape by blasting through the floor would have been a no-starter. And then if the boss monster had just ripped off his head, just like it did with the red-shirt, he would have been dead. But for some inexplicable reason, these aliens under clear threat of death, spend large amounts of time doing nothing, or standing around in a vaguely menacing manner. Maybe there will be an explanation of this bizarre behavior later in the series. I guess I'll find out. This volume still has the kind of fan service that upsets the people who don't want it to be there, and I still feel guilty about liking it. It seems that the religious guilt that was installed in me as a child, carries over into liberal guilt as an adult, but perhaps with better reason. I'm still mentally struggling with all that shit. Speaking of which, the new lust interest for Kei is not surprisingly just as built as the Kishimoto, except she's tall. I guess that can happen in a fantasy world full of fantasies. Despite all these problems, the story is still interesting, and I want to know what the fuck Gantz is playing at, and what Gantz actually is. If the author would just focus on the game, this could be a better series. Two and half stars.
Emocionante.
Synopsis: Gantz tells the story of a teenager named Kei Kurono, among others, who die but find themselves brought back in perfectly healthy bodies and forced to participate in a "game" where they must hunt down and kill aliens.
Review: I almost gave up on Gantz several times, but now that I've read it all the way to the end, I'm glad I stuck with it. The beginning is dragged down by repulsive and unlikable characters, a messily paced story, unnecessary sexualization and gratuitous violence without much substance. As it progresses, however, the character development becomes pretty incredible and the growing threat of the enemies feels truly well done. Once the real enemies are revealed, it's mind-blowing how the series had been secretly foreshadowing their arrival from the very beginning.
Although it takes a while, some really good characters are introduced later on in the series and they're the ones that made me want to read to the end. Some characters that were absolutely unbearable in the beginning became polar opposites of their original selves and even made me sympathize with them quite a bit. The protagonist Kei for example, I hated him with all my heart for the first third of the series, he became progressively more likable in the second third of the story and then he evolved into one of the most memorable, unlikely heroes I've ever seen in this storytelling medium throughout the final third. The last third of the series is unbelievably terrifying with some of the most gruesome and disgusting battle/survival scenes in the history of fiction. It's much more bearable and intense in the final third because this time the violence and horror is happening to people we actually care about instead of a bunch of unlikable nobodies.
The final third of the story is what made me feel so glad that I didn't give up on this series. It had me on the edge of my seat more times than I can recall. There are a ton of chapters but they're very short and full of action which makes the series a quick read despite having almost 400 chapters. So even though the first third of the story was kinda bad in my opinion, it doesn't last for long and the payoff that comes after it's over truly impressed me. It's a flawed, thrilling and horrifying action series that takes a while to kick off. When it finally kicks off, however, it kicks off extremely hard.
Ok, things are going downhill. While it's still a page turner (I really don't understand why), the action is going out the window. Turns out there are a lot more aliens and Kei is obviously worried about his safety, considering how he forgot his suit. Yet... he survives this mission despite being in the thick of it. The aliens are... stupid. Despite having an ability to fly and a devastating sound attack, they couldn't kill anyone except people who can't move. Is this on purpose? With their designs and mannerisms, I actually can't decide whether the author was purposefully making it so or that it was simply poorly-done scenes. Well, the plot moves forward I guess, with us getting shown that Kei being a pretty smart, fast-thinking kid. Katou was... a bit pathetic here. Even the pretty boy was more effective.
Bro the new girl is really cute and already so much better than Kei. Also I'm kind of afraid of the potencial homophobia that could happen in the following volumes with the model guy, the gay rapist that kato beat up was already really bad, but hopefully this character will be able to redeem that and maybe serve for some interesting commentary on homophobia because of the way Sato is treating him? Idk but the author previously wrote a Yuri manga so I'm gonna be hopeful. Also the protagonist is still kind of a piece of shit but honestly I'm warming up to him, he's just a little incel little shit teenager, you can't really get that mad at him. We finally got an interaction between the dog and Kei that wasn't weird! Yey!!
The boss bird alien shows up, mayhem ensues, our survivors again make a pit stop at home, and then on to a new alien hunt.
The bird alien fight scenes were a little lame. By the time they get home, Kei is beginning to want to return to the alien start room and Kato never wants to go back - it's interesting to see Kei becoming more of a killer. The new group is a great mix with a priest who thinks he knows what gantz is all about - could it be the place you go before heaven/hell?
The actual action bits are good. I really like this art style and the violence and gore is done really well. And some of the characters are compelling. But I'm just kind of tired of all the other stuff now. Just aaaah conflicted feelings. I think I'm going to say I've dropped this now. I might come back one day who knows. But right now I'm stopping without the intention of resuming soon. yup that's it. :)
In Gantz after their deaths group rotate through a room to scenarios where they battle aliens to the death. The group changes as they come and go. This episode was another such rotation. The reasons are slowly becoming apparent.
I feel like every one of my reviews really revolves around how much I hate Kei but it's true. I think that if this series wasn't sexualized so much then the depiction of Kei as an incel given power would truly be one of the most masterful unlikable characters ever written. But alas.
