Hot Magic ##0.5

The First Spell

Rate this book

Though a prequel to the Hot Magic Series, this is a standalone book. None of the other books in the series, Indigo Spell, Breaking the Spell, and Unchained Spell, need to read first!

Captivated by a wizard with amnesia, Jensen knows he’s only asking for trouble when he takes her to his world. Finding out she’s a member of an enemy guild doesn't change his connection to her. And their first kiss only strengthens his need to keep her close.

Barely knowing her own name, Charlemaine begins having horrible visions of impeding doom, and she’s labeled an enemy of Jensen’s guild. She doesn't trust she isn't being used as bait to bring down the group of powerful wizards, but she doesn't want to leave Jensen.

Jensen will risk anything to save Charlemaine’s life when magic gives way to betrayal. But will the need for vengeance overcome even the strongest love?

What a fantastic start to the series! As you may or may not know, I am an action girl and The First Spell has everything I love jammed into one short book! Rachel Carrington has written a fast paced book and introduced me to a whole new world which includes Wizards, magic, lust, deception and plenty of action.

Two brothers, Jenson and Remy are both part of the Assembly, the most powerful Guild of Wizards in the world. While they were in the woods, they find an unconscious girl and when she wakes she doesn't have any memories. Jensen has an attraction to the girl immediately and is quick to defend her and keep her safe. Jensen uses his abilities to help her to remember who she is and hopefully to get some of her memories back. Charlemaine or Charlie as she prefers, remembers nothing of her family but is desperate to find out so she can return home. The brothers believe she is from the Nocturne Guild, but Jensen will not let her leave until she is able to defend herself and she remembers who she is.

And now begins the whirl wind romance. Charlie and Jensen have to overcome a few obstacles and are thrust into some situations that are out of their control. Even though they are from two different guilds they are beginning to realise that not everything is black and white when it comes to magic and their beliefs.

As I said earlier, there is deception in the plot as someone is trying to bring down the Assembly and Charlie tries to work with Jensen and his Guild to help find the traitor. Someone wants to bring the fire dagger into the world to destroy the Assembly and to unleash evil upon the world.

Charlie is a character I found easy to relate too. She is a bit reserved to begin with, but when her memories start to come back she starts to fire up. She is a fun character, and is willing to sacrifice her life or her magic to save anyone in her family. She spends most of this story trying to remain alive and conscious and she is a completely different character to those that are in the Assembly. Jensen is an honourable man and it becomes his personal mission to protect Charlie at all costs. He is a very powerful wizard and dedicated to his guild.

Rachel Carrington has a fantastic writing style and I was kept entertained from the beginning to the very end. The magical element of the plot was intriguing and I enjoy reading books with wizards and witches and this series promises to have all that and more. It is an exciting new series and I can't wait to see what Rachel will bring me next!

I really enjoyed this story. This was my first book from this author, and I was expecting something a little different. I thought there would be more heat. I am not sure why, maybe cause I have just been reading so many things that are just full of heat lol.

Anyhow, this was a good story - full of magic! I liked the characters, I think I'd say Jensen was my favorite. He is a wizard at The Assembly, and he takes great care of Charlie, a wizard from the Nocturne Guild. I found him to be very protective, which I love. He was a noble character with a good heart.

Charlie was pretty fun, when she wasn't almost dying. I bet if given a whole book and really allowed to flourish she could be a real show stopper. She has just the right amount of brazenness and attitude to make her fun. Plus she is a wizard on top of it, so that is just all icing on the cake my friends.

The rest of the characters were pretty interesting, although I didn't really feel a connection to them. In this short of a story, you aren't supposed to. I loved the mystery behind who had attacked Charlie to make her pass out in the woods in the first place. The whole thing had a very Romeo & Juliet meets Hamlet meets Harry Potter (since I have no other magic reference for movies) air to it, but it worked for it. I think I will definitely put the rest of the series on the TBR for the future

Check out my other listens at Eargasms Audiobook Reviews

This was a really interesting read. I knew nothing about the series so, this is totally fresh material to me.

I really liked Charlie and her spunky attitude. I love a gal with sass! Even when she had no memory, she was still feisty.

The romance with Jensen develops quickly but it is still believable. I liked their connection and really felt the feelings develop.

The story is simple but the world is very well developed. I could see it leading into the series and am definitely curious to read more. The idea of guilds and magic is always fascinating.

The story is mostly a clean romance, not detailed steam. It is still enjoyable from that angle. Not every romance has to be a sexfest.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Katie McAble. She does a very nice job with the women's voices and the general narration. She really missed the mark on the men's voices. They ranged from creepy to annoying. Several really grated the nerves. I liked her pace and found it to be a nice read aside from the men's dialogue. I am not ready to write her off though, I would definitely give her another listen.

I am curious about the rest of the series and hope to see it on Audible soon. If not I may have to break down and get the ebooks.

A prequel to the Hot Magic Series, this book starts with Jensen and his brother Remy, finding Charlemaine unconscious, in the woods, without memory or realization of her powers. The wizards from differing clans are not particularly friendly to each other, and in some cases, are overtly hostile to those not in their clan.

While Jensen is convinced Charlemaine has not been sent to the castle of the Assembly to cause difficulties. Unfortunately, not everyone is of the same belief. And when one of Charlemaine’s own family members uses his wizardry and telepathic connection with her in a bid to obtain powers that would place him above all others: Charlemaine and Jensen are thrown into a battle for their lives.

A great starter taste to whet the appetite for the Hot Magic Series, the tone of the wizards and the partnership between Jensen and Charlemaine are something to look forward to. Their relationship offers the possibility of a happy for now, while there are underlying issues to be sorted out still. A solid effort that has me adding the series into my TBR pile.

I received an eBook copy from the author for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review, and all conclusions are my own responsibility.

Jensen knows taking Charlemaine is something he shouldn't do, but he can't help it. Their kisses set them on fire and finding out she is forbidden and an enemy doesn't change his feelings in the least. All he knows is that he loves her and will protect her at all costs.

Good Read! I haven't read the other books in the series, but I did enjoy this short story. Jensen and Charlemaine are a great couple to read about. Of course they are forbidden to be with each other, but that made the story even better. I'm a sucker for forbidden loves. The First Spell is a fast, fun read. Sweet and sexy. I loved the fantasy elements. This is a prequel story to Carrington's Hot Magic series. From what I can tell this story can be read as a stand-alone.
