Kinda dead. Straight-up psycho. Totally obsessed with her.
I did a bad, bad thing.
Thanks to a blank in my memory, I'm not sure what that thing was, but it was horrible enough to get me locked up in the mental ward for seven years. Horrible enough that my little sister won't even speak to me.
But when I'm released back into a town determined to rub my unknown sins in my face, the past isn't the only thing that's haunting me. The four "imaginary" friends who made my childhood bearable barge into my life in a very real way.
They're crude, criminally inclined, and more than a little unstable after ages trapped in afterlife limbo. All they want is to protect me. Worship me. Avenge me.
So they'll bludgeon, maim, eviscerate—tear a strip of havoc right through this sleepy town.
Even rise from the dead.
Maybe I'm still not all that sane either, because part of me finds them strangely appealing. In ways very different from how I felt as a kid. And that's not the only strangeness stirring inside me...
I promised myself I'd stick to the straight and narrow from here on. But what if the only way to set things right is to get a little ghoulish?

While Danny Gavigan is PERFECT as Ruin, hearing Scott McCormak as Jett (an excellent voice actor) try to be a hot young twenties boy was super cringe. I had to switch to kindle so I didn’t hear his love scenes. I don’t think I could come back from that. WYN Delano as Nox, who admittedly has great voice range, still sounds like a much older man. Mid forties minimum. It just all doesn’t fit. Finally we have a Steve Wannall as Kai. His voice can pass for 20s, but it has such a soft tone that no way would I hear it and think hard core gangster
Next is their personalities. Nox I can get behind as a gang leader. But Ruin as a Happy teddy bear, Jett as an angsty artist, and Kai as a nerdy brainiac? Not only does it not make sense that the four of them would even be friends, but brothers in arms as gang leaders? It just doesn’t fit. Also, young as they were, how successful could their gang have been? What did they even do to make money? Beat people up?
Money. Where do they get it? They roam all over town beating down competing gangs, but never take their money or drugs or weapons. Not once did they make mention of hidden cash stashes or fat bank accounts. Yet they are spending huge stacks on makeovers, motorcycles, new car, gun shipments, down payments, and takeout for 4 ravenous men all day everyday. Only Kai has an entry level job while the others just roam around all day beating people up , and Nox has the bank account of the professor. Not enough for their spending unless the professor was secretly loaded.
Finally, their insta love for Lily is cringeworthy. They knew her as a CHILD. Now she’s back and pretty and they all instantly fall in love? They don’t know her at all! 7 years is a long time as a teen. And during these formative years she was in the loony bin. How well rounded or interesting could she be? These are 40 year old (at least) spirits insta loving on a girl who just turned 20 (21?) who they don’t know at all. Couldn’t they spend some time getting to know her before declaring their romantic love?
Granted, there is humor in this story. The villains are super awful and make me very angry. So much so that despite the huge holes in this series I can’t stop reading! lol So much doesn’t make sense and you REALLY have to suspend disbelief, but I’m hooked all the same.

I love this series, so it being the first RH GraphicAudio picks up (I think?) felt particularly lucky, since I’ve been meaning to check out their catalogue. Unsurprisingly, I also enjoyed this – well, it inspired the same emotions I had when I listened to the audiobook, which in book 1 is mostly frustration at the situation Lilly finds herself in – and will absolutely be getting the rest of the series when it comes out, not just because I love this author, but because I want more RH in this format.
The only real problem for me is Jet’s godawful voice. Whoever voiced him is a talented voice actor, to be sure, but he sounds like a middle-aged man with a three-pack-a-day habit, not a young adult. It was intensely distracting.
I enjoyed the book and my introduction to this particular iteration of the medium, but goddamn did it make me miss Joe Arden.
GrapicAudio version - this is awesome, a few bits are a bit cringe - fight scenes etc - but the rest really brings the characters to life. I've listened to several GraphicAudio books now, some of my fave authors rereleasing in this format, and I am content to spend the money again!
Lily is my kind of FMC, she has quiet strength, resilience of dooooom and a really huge growth across the series as she comes into her forgotten/discovered power. The actual underlying plot of what has been happening in this town is awful, and the first book barely hints at it. Fortunately her men are straight onto it's destruction alongside devising their own revenge for their prior deaths. Each guy havign his own dedicated narrator is a wonderful thing! Again, taken me a bit of time to get over the spicy scenes with all the voices involved... As I actually think the original format with Joe Arden narrating was already AMAZING, he had already made each character his own. The Graphic Audio includes lots of music, sound effects and drastically shortens the actual overal listening time. Less to describe I guess?
The performances were good, although some of the voices didn’t necessarily fit the characters, but I like that they all had different voices. Went into this book not knowing anything about it, and while there were some interesting moments, there were some plot holes and some cringe moments.
I need to talk about both the book and its dramatization. It is the first time I read a book with a reverse harem and I confess that I was more than pleasantly surprised, in fact I'm a little obsessed waiting for the second one to come out. I also have to say that I think that listening to it dramatized makes it much more charming and earns a plus of points. If I had only read it, I don't know what score I would have given it.Anyway the book is very good, they say that many books of this style are pure erotic scenes with almost no plot, but this is not the case. Lilly, the main character almost drowned in a swamp as a child but in the end manages to get out. since then and until her 13 years, she will be playing with 4 imaginary friends who appeared at the time of her near drowning. But it turns out that these 4 imaginary friends are much more than that and when Lilly returns to her town after 7 years in a psychiatric hospital without knowing why, she will meet again with these imaginary friends in a totally unexpected and surprising way.
I really liked Lilly, who you will discover is not a totally normal girl, and of course I loved her 4 friends..., what a gang!
As for the dramatization the voices seemed to me in general quite accurate except for Vincent/Jet's voice, he is supposed to be a college student but the actor seems to be around 40 or 50....You end up getting fond of that voice too but I didn't think it was the best choice. Otherwise, looking forward to when they will release the second dramatized book.
