'Kernels: Stories of People With a Softer Core' by Ajay Gupte takes readers on a moving journey into the lives of people who, despite their outward appearance, are remarkably dedicated and resilient. The quintessential idea reminded me of the short story in my NCERT textbook of Hindi wherein two young lads on a journey met with an accident and one of them fell into a well inhabited by a snake. The other boy managed to pull the first one out because of sheer willpower. Through fifteen engrossing short stories, Gupte explores the inner lives of people whose activities subtly but significantly affect society.

'Kernels' power is in its capacity to show how empathy and compassion can change lives, even in the most ordinary circumstances. Gupte's skill as a storyteller is evident in the way he crafts stories that have depth and resonance. Every story inspires readers to consider the consequences of their own deeds by acting as a potent reminder of the good deeds that start with compassion and bravery.

"(Dis)honor," one of the best pieces, vividly captures village life and the intricacies of human relationships while delving into topics of castism, villages as caste factories, shattered friendships, and intercaste marriage. The melancholy twist of "The Postman Rings Twice" explores topics of religion and belief while providing an insight into the lives of regular people working in a post office.

Gupte immerses readers in the challenges and ambitions of each protagonist by bringing them into the lives of his characters through his vivid penmanship. Because of their genuineness and empathy, the stories are accessible to readers from a wide range of backgrounds.

Ultimately, "Kernels" challenges readers to look beyond themselves and accept the transformational potential of compassion. It is more than just a collection of anecdotes. Through his poignant examination of human resilience, Gupte serves as a reminder of the enormous influence that one person can have on both their local community and the global community. Anybody looking for inspiration and hope in today's world should read "Kernels," as it is a tribute to the continuing power of human connection and the possibility for positive change.

-Of People, Their Struggles and Their Lives-
✒️📖
Review of 'Kernels' by Ajay Gupte

Stephen King once said that reading a novel is like entering into a relationship. It's your comfort corner, a place where you know you are loved and protected and you yearn to return to those arms after a long day of work. It’s this pull that makes a book especially a novel alluring and atttactive.

A short story, on the other hand, now that's a different deal. Mr King compares the experience of reading a thrilling short story to a kiss you steal in a dark alley with a stranger- it thrills you, heats up your blood and sends your pulse into a tizzy.
And what a tumultuous affair I had with this anthology. Torrid and phenomenal.

A collection of 15 shorts, Kernels kickstarts with (Dis)honor that tackles the themes of interfaith marriage, broken friendships, delusional thoughts of prestige and caste pride and lives of people in a village. Samar and Javed, both childhood friends who meet in Gurugram after a long time are at different junctures in their lives. A disappeared girl between them, how will she change the equations between them?

In second story Justice, Mohan has refused a lawyer in a court case, he has refused defence lawyer but abruptly, someone appears to defend him. It’s Supriya Vaze, his daughter Savita’s school friend.

In The Dark Side of the Pandemic, author’s focus is on the struggle of a village with Covid-19.

In my favourite, The Postman Rings Twice, there are just two employees in a post office in Vansaigaon. The postman Sakharam and post master Sanjayrao. One day postman Sakharam receives a letter which is addressed to the God.

In the last story Life After Death, Bhaiji who lives in Nehar wali haveli in Pimpla village, is distraught because all his four sons have moved on from the life of village into corporate lives and rarely visit him.

Kernels is about ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. Their guts, grit and gumption when they are pushed to the wall is well etched by the author. It is their struggles and their aspirations and dream that tie them to the milieu around the reader and makes for a thread of connection.

This collection of short stories recounts the everyday lives of villages across India through simple yet captivating narratives.

My Take-
The book is a compilation of fifteen compelling short stories that delve into the lives of individuals who exhibit remarkable strength, resilience, and kindness despite facing various challenges in life. The title itself suggests the central theme of the book, it's about people who possess an inner strength that allows them to navigate through difficult circumstances with grace and compassion.

The writing of this book is simple and crisp with each story culminating in a moral lesson. Gupte's storytelling prowess shines through as he intricately weaves together the diverse experiences of his characters, each representing a unique facet of the human condition. From tales of overcoming adversity to acts of selflessness and empathy by the Postman and Masterji to teaching us the importance of togetherness as represented in the story “D’Silva House”, the stories resonated with me on a deeply emotional level, offering glimpses into the universal struggles and triumphs of Life.

What distinguishes "Kernels" is its focus on the inherent goodness present in people, even amid challenges. Gupte's moving stories serve as a reminder that qualities like kindness, empathy, and love possess profound transformative potential, benefiting both those who give and receive. Furthermore, the book underscores the vital role of human connection and compassion, underscoring the significance of empathy and understanding in nurturing a more empathetic society.

A captivating narrative that unveils the intricacies of the world, delving beyond individual lives to reveal profound impacts. This literary masterpiece unveils characters so vividly portrayed, they seem like old friends rediscovered.

Each tale delves into a spectrum of emotions, striking a chord with its readers. Themes range from enduring childhood bonds to the irreplaceable support of family, the resilience to face challenges head-on, and the innate altruism that defines humanity. There is a constant reminder of collective growth and progress.

Written with eloquence and clarity, each story resonates deeply, evoking a sense of warmth akin to a comforting embrace, or propelling readers towards meaningful action for their communities and beyond. It serves as a gentle nudge towards selflessness and purposeful living, urging readers to embrace every moment to its fullest.

My top favourites are D’Silva house that showed the generations and family hood that change over time. The city of dreams was highly relatable as I have heard my dad telling about his chawl stories, Justice which had a full circle meaning to it and the rich poor man who showed me the power of selfless good deed.

Among the array of captivating narratives, several gems stand out prominently. “D’Silva House” emerges as a poignant testament to the evolution of family ties across generations, painting a vivid portrait of familial bonds that transcend time.
“The City of Dreams” resonates deeply with personal anecdotes shared by my father, weaving a tapestry of nostalgia and familiarity through tales of life in the chawls, capturing the essence of a bygone era.
“Justice” unfolds with a profound sense of closure, its narrative coming full circle to impart a powerful message that resonates long after the final page is turned.
And then there’s “The Rich Poor Man,” a tale that unveils the transformative power of selfless acts of kindness, leaving an indelible mark on the soul and serving as a poignant reminder of the inherent goodness within humanity.

In a world where people often say that humanity is diminishing. People aren't so emotionally coordinated with events around them, books like "Kernels" feels like such a beautiful take on society.

Kernels : Stories of People with a Softer Core by Ajay Gupte, is absolutely true to it's title.
It is a heartwarming collection of fifteen short stories that explore the depth and complexity of human character. In situations that plague today's societies, the stories delve into the moral aspect of human behavior. Each story is a vignette into the life of an individual who, on the surface, may appear ordinary but is endowed with a remarkable inner strength and a commitment to their personal values. Almost all the main characters in the book are people I have somewhat heard and met in real life or heard real life stories of. I think that's what makes the book endearing at some points.

The central theme of the book is the ‘softer core’—the idea that within every person lies a gentle strength that shapes their actions and interactions. The stories traverse various themes such as resilience, empathy, and the quiet power of kindness.

Ajay Gupte’s writing is very engaging, and with the formar of shoet stories the book sits with the reader. The stories are independent so yiu can read them as per your mood. For me I couldn't read at one go because I think it wasn't a fictional represented for me. I could vividly relate or atleast hope and imagine.
One thing worth mentioning is how genuine the characters are moulded into.

This collection stands out for its ability to inspire and evoke introspection. Readers may find themselves pondering over the stories long after turning the last page, reflecting on the virtues and strengths of the characters.

“Kernels” is recommended for those who enjoy short stories with depth and meaning. It’s a book that celebrates the unsung heroes among us and the impact they have on the world. Whether you’re looking for inspiration or a deeper understanding of humanity, “Kernels” is a fulfilling read.

Where would you find a man who lives half his wealth to a village from which he grew up to be a successful person? A man who waits years to get justice for his daughter and is supported by a friend in disguise and silence? A teacher couple with meagre money but having investments in the education they imparted and relationships they made? - In this book offcourse!
.
Kernels is a compelling collection of fifteen short stories that delve into the depths of human kindness, resilience, and the power of everyday acts of compassion. Each story encapsulates a unique narrative, exploring themes such as inner peace, revenge, equality, and friendship with a delicate touch.
What sets "Kernels" apart is its emphasis on the simplicity of human goodness. While the stories may seem predictable, this predictability is their strength, serving to highlight the universal humanity that connects us all. The author's writing style is accessible yet captivating, drawing readers into each tale with ease. The cover cover, title, and the story titles are so so well matched and simple in their own, it has to strike a chord with all readers.
.
There is something to learn and think about from each story, like 'The City of Dreams' - captures the essence of urban life, with its contradictions and complexities, its moments of triumph and heartbreak. It is a poignant reflection on the human condition, reminding us of the enduring power of aspiration and the universal desire for a better tomorrow. At its core, the book strikes at your emotions, ones that the grind of a daily professional life has taken out of you and needs to be triggered at times.
.
It's a short read and the unrelated stories can be read at any point, one at a time. The language is very simple and easy to understand probably requiring a bit of stricter editing which on the whole though takes nothing away from the heart of the book!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Kernels is a compilation of fifteen short stories. The stories deal with varying themes of inner peace, resilience, revenge, equality among social classes, and friendship, to name a few.
All the stories are unique in their own way. As the subtext of the title suggests, all the stories have an underlying theme of human kindness occuring at different times in the respective stories.
I especially loved the first few stories as the whole idea behind them felt unique to me and so did the storytelling. I must say that although the stories were 'predictable', it is imperative to know that this exactly was the most important part of the stories as they were not serving a higher purpose of suspense but that of the humanity that exists among us.
The writing was easy to comprehend but gripping nonetheless. The author did a good job with the writing with respect to the stories. Although, I feel like the editing could have been more crisp.
A collection focusing on humanity, kindness and everything that humans do to make this world a better place, Kernels is a beautiful read to detox yourself from the everyday hustle.

"Kernel Storues of People with a Softer Core "written by Ajay Gupte is a collection of 15 such short stories which tells us about the life whereabouts of a man who likely lives across the street. Among all the other 15 stories my favourite one is "Life After Death".

In this story we come to know about Sangram Singh or popularly known as Bhaiji who is the richest landlord in that area. The setting of this story is in the village of Pimpla. Bhaiji had a huge bungalow named as 'Nehar Vali Haveli' however despite being rich and mighty he led a very modest lifestyle. He was known to be a 'down-to-earth' and simple man who was always accessible and helpful. He was a little bit of unfortunate because of his sons they slightly drifted away with ego. They were far from polite and picked up fights over small issues.

Bhaiji always wanted to live after his death. He wanted his sons to take care of his farms and his legacy. The sons, on the other hand, wanted the legacy and wealth but wanted to avoid the responsibility associated with it.

Throughout the book it was an amazing experience going through all such stories. It keeps the readers enact towards it. The writhing style was simple and easy which made it super quick to complete it.

This book was a compilation of fifteen short stories. Each of the stories revolves around a different protagonist. This read was full of pure emotions and feelings.

All the stories were different. I have enjoyed spring afternoons with one or two stories daily from this book. What I loved was the setting and plotline. Middle-class families and Indian Society have so many things in common.

Stories were based on different themes of religion, inner peace, love, revenge, heartbreaks, inequality, kindness, family values, daily routine life or pandemic times. The book cover was designed to be elegant and thought-provoking.

Stories were written in very easy and ordinary language and predictable. What makes this an interesting read is the moral lesson and social values given by all the chapters. Each story will make you learn something good and bring kindness to you.

Some of my favourite stories were (Dis)Honor, life after death, Diamterical, The City of Dreams, and The Destiny.

I highly recommend it to those who are looking for a comfortable read for a weekend or love to read short stories.
