This is a powerful and positive story about a quest for a change in life and the extraordinary possibilities of the human spirit.
"Before I wrote this book, I was diagnosed as MORBIDLY OBESE by my primary-care physician following a yearly visit. The only problem with this diagnosis was that we never discussed this issue. I knew that I was overweight, but it wasn't until I switched doctors and picked up my medical records that I saw this in writing. I saw myself in front of the mirror every day, so I knew things were bad, but it wasn't until I read those words, MORBIDLY OBESE, that the gravity of the situation sunk in." -LAURA SINCLAIR
At 55, Laura Sinclair was grossly overweight; the future looked dim and dangerous. Carrying extra weight was setting her up for the possibility of developing a chronic illness--heart disease, stroke, or worse. She decided to take ownership of her life and pave a new road to optimum health and happiness. -Learn how Laura lost over 40% of her body weight and kept it off. -How she reached a level of fitness and athleticism that she thought not possible in her 50s and beyond.
This is one of the best books for us boomer females. In this book is some of the best advise on getting healthy for us over 60. It is an easy read, has no overbearing statics or charts, no doctor jargon. It is fun to read and motivating.
As a person entering her 50’s, reading this book was super encouraging! As Laura walks through her life situation, a story of triumph and longevity of good health shines through! I took many positive nuggets from this book and I look forward to taking action on them as I cont inue on my very own weight loss journey! Highly recommend this book for anyone on this path in their own lives.
There is some decent information, but she repeats herself over and over again, sometimes word for word, and it makes the book longer than it should be. She also goes into a lot more detail about some things than she needed to, like details about her leg injury and subsequent surgery...I'm sure she found all that terribly interesting, but I just didn't need to read all that.
My other problem with the book is that Ms. Sinclair states that her objectives were to 1. lose 80 lbs 2. write a book about it and 3. develop a public speaking career (69%/location 918). Obviously, if these are your goals, you're highly motivated to work out an hour or more each day but honestly, for those of us who have jobs and lives, who has the time? Her book gave me motivation, yes, but since I have no desire to write a book or give lectures about my success, I'm happy steadily losing weight (maybe a little more slowly) doing 25 or so minutes of exercise a day, thanks.
This is the 2nd book I read in the last few weeks to give me a kick-start to try to get serious about the loss of weight I put on in the last 20 years. I give the author lots of credit for simplicity, directness, telling us that it wasn't an easy choice but one that she made to get into better health and weight loss and exercise were part of the plan, Eating right was also important. I think this book and the other one also on Kindle Unlimited called the Click were the incentive I needed to start my journey toward a more fit me.
This is a good book for you if you are looking for inspiration with a dose of reality. The author acknowledges that it's not easy but it won't happen if you don't start with some basic knowledge and effort. Know your input (food calories) and output (activity - calories burned). It's all the same stuff we hear everywhere and she makes it seem reasonably easy to get started.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Laura's story and her common sense approach to grabbing ahold of and changing her lifestyle and therefore her life are inspiring. I plan to take her story and start my own journey out of the boat I am currently in. Her words have hit so many neurons in my brain and I am truly ready to use her experience and her journey as my impetus to reset.
I was so disappointed, I almost gave it 2 stars. It's more about her breaking her foot than losing weight. There is only ONE good bit of advice I got out of this small memoir, just one. I really had high hopes but just couldn't get past the bad writing. She repeats herself, over and over. Just not a fan
This provides hope and inspiration. However, most people were not athletes in their younger years. Plus, many people have work and family obligations that prevent them from exercising 70+ minutes six days per week. So, this remains unrealistic for the average person.
This book is useful for anyone who is interested in working toward positive change. It's not a how to book but it lays out a framework to encourage moving toward a healthy lifestyle.
The best book on weight loss that I have read. Being in story form made for easy reading and I didn't want to put it down!!! Her enthusiasm is catching and very motivational.
I appreciate the author's story and why she is sharing it with others. She has some ideas on losing weight and what worked for her. The takeaway from this story is her motivation and she keeps it going.
Love the authors humor and real talk approach to weight loss. I will definitely be spreading the good news about motivation and will encourage others to read Laura's book!
I was hopeful when I read the title as I didn't see many books about women over 50 losing significant weight. It's a bit scary to be healthy at 40 and realize past 50 that you are much less healthy and have more risks.
I hoped to read more about the journey she went through. I thought there might be more detail on her plan and how things went over the year. For me it had an inspiring beginning and ending. The middle is a little dry and repetitive. I didn't find many stories or strong tips except cut sugar out, exercise and scare yourself often with the words morbidly obese.
I did find overall story OK and enough inspiration to make it worth the KU space. If you are looking for details on how, what can go wrong and wrong, this might not be the right book. For an easy read. And soft advice, it's OK.
I am 55 and started my Weight loss journey three months ago. This book gave me the encouragement that yes at my age I can take the weight off and be healthy again. So many encouraging suggestions. I am down 15 lbs and yes I do believe tracking what you eat and taking a good look at what you put into your body is a must. Ms. Sinclair's story just gave me more encouragement to keep on pushing down the path of a healthy body for a better life. Thank you for sharing your journey with us.
The information in here is good, but common sense. I found the book extremely redundant. Until I realized that this is simply Laura's writing style, I thought that I had somehow slipped back a few pages.
This is not really a how-to (not that I necessarily expected it to be...) but more of a testimonial. Laura is very careful to say, "This is what worked for me and why” and her tone never feels condescending.
Nothing revolutionary in here, but it was a pleasant account of her journey to " superfit." I simply wish she has told the story more concisely.
One woman's story of how she lost weight and became "super fit." I'm glad I read it. The book would have gotten a much higher rating if it wasn't so repetitive. I'm trying to motivate myself to lose weight and exercise. I find it helpful to hear stories about actual people. I already know what I "should" do.
it was good read about weight loss in and everyday life...Most of the stories you read on weight loss have stories of people and graphs and medical advice, but no real living breathing I'm a average Joe people. she was over weight and made a life style change
This is the real deal and an easy read. Laura is brutally honest about her thoughts, feelings and actions that led her to an 80lb weight loss...I plan on reading again immediately!
Motivation for change was an accident. Presented the same basic weight loss instructions found everywhere, 80% diet, 20% exercise. Comes down to everyone has to find their own internal reason to change.
This book would be a shorter than 132 pages if she didn't repeat she lost 90 lbs etc. Hard to believe she is a motivational speaker because it would totally bore people with the repetition.
I really liked this book. It's not another 'how to' book but more of a 'why should I' book. I am the same age as the author was when she started her journey to good health and this book was very inspiring to start my own journey. I know I can do this!
