A giant space opera epic! Outer space, space warfare, heroic romance, futuristic civilizations, advanced technology, and galactic empires with alien races; this comic book has it all! Wow, I'm so glad I started on this journey of reading everything that happened after HoM. The story moves like a sci-fi movie with political drama, space-faring civilizations, and interstellar conflict. It's so enjoyable and I would definitely read it again!
*Spoilers* Don't read after this as this is a summary for me because I have a short memory and tend to forget comics I've read!
In the aftermath of Deadly Genesis, Vulcan vowed fiery revenge against the Shi'ar for murdering his mother and ruining his childhood. In this story, we get to see his path of destruction in all its glory. Professor X is not so keen on the idea of an Earth-born mutant going to rile up a powerful space empire so he and Havok, Polaris, Rachel Grey, Warpath, Nightcrawler, and Darwin venture into space to try and stop Vulcan. The X-Men follow the trail of death Vulcan left on his journey into Shi'ar territory but find themselves unable to get there any faster due to Vulcan destroying the jump gates.
I like that Vulcan's viewpoint is also portrayed and powerful rage is fleshed out and not just one-dimensional because he actually has valid reasons to go after the Shi'ar. It almost makes you root for him because he's been wronged his entire life. Anyways, he soon learns that D'Ken is no longer the Emperor but Lilandra who is supposedly Charles's old flame. His mission doesn't change and he also learns of her sister, Deathbird who can prove a valuable ally if he can find her. There's a pretty awesome battle where Vulcan confronts the Imperial Guard and manages to hold his own against these powerful warriors all by himself. He manages to kill several of them but Gladiator brutally maims and defeats him. Meanwhile, the X-Men are stranded in space with two Shi'ar on board. The two kidnap Xavier and vow to take him to the Throneworld. At this point in the story, the X-Men are desperate and ally themselves with the Starjammers, a group of freedom fighters fighting against the Shi'ar Imperium. This is when the story really heats up and the action becomes nonstop! Vulcan forms a fiery romance with Deathbird who convinces him to revive D'Ken. Vulcan has ulterior motives for doing this as he plans to kill him later in front of everyone. Vulcan, Deathbird, and D'Ken attempt a coup on Empress Lilandra and succeed, dethroning her and also vowing to execute Xavier. However, Vulcan destroys D'Ken in an awesome display of power, much to the shock of Deathbird. He then declares himself Emperor of the Shi'ar. A fierce battle ensues with explosions and death everywhere, the Shi'ar on one side and the Starjammers/X-Men on the other. In his rage, Vulcan pushed Xavier into the M'kraan Crystal believing it would kill him. Instead, he emerges with his telepathy restored. The battle is lost, however, and Vulcan remains as Emperor. Havok, Polaris, and Marvel Girl are stranded in space with the remaining Starjammers and so decide to join them to resist the empire.
