The real me lives in the shadows, the seedy underbelly, where sin Is the only air we know how to breathe.
My dreams of going Pro are at my fingertips. But in one moment, one hit, those dreams come crashing down around me.
The money, the fame, the life I wanted to give my mother. All gone.
Once I was Kingston “The King” Reyes. Women and men had chanted my name. Worshiped me. Now I work as a postal worker by day…and at night, I crawl into the dark, seedy underbelly of sin. An illegal underground fight club, where I still reign with my fists, but where every fight could be my last.
The “Brothers,” Dutch and Dom, hold my leash while they pay for my mother’s cancer treatments. I’m their puppet, their boy toy for wealthy women and power. You don’t cross them unless you want to end up on the bottom of a river.
Corrupt darkness coats my skin, marks my bones. I don’t see any light or hope, until on my route, I meet a pint-sized, mute, little girl, who seems to look right through me. She sees past the bruises and scars, while I can hear beyond her silence.
Yet it is her mother, Sawyer, I should run from. Sexy, feisty, and smart, Sawyer’s darkness draws me in. Challenges me.
She is everything I can’t have. Everything forbidden.
This book had such a good balance of grit, emotion, and slow-building tension. Kingston is that broody, rough-around-the-edges fighter you can’t help but root for, and Sawyer is such a strong, determined single mom who would do anything for her daughter. The way their worlds collide feels raw and real, and the chemistry between them just keeps simmering until it boils over.
It’s intense and emotional, but also has that hopeful undercurrent that makes you want them to win not just in love, but in life. I really liked this one, and it left me thinking about the characters long after I finished.
DOWN FOR THE COUNT BY S. MARIE AND VICTOR RAHL is the story of Kingston and Sawyer. Kingston has been trying to give his mother everything he can to help with her battle with cancer. This has lead him to give his up his life or near enough. Sawyer is a strong women who is trying to raise her daughter Hadley who has some issues. So she is very protective of her but it seems her daughter has taken to Kingston. Enjoyed this book.
Oooowweee. This baby is all kinds of intense, you that kind of intense that keeps you turning the pages because you need to see what will happen next ~ hoping for one thing, but dreading the alternative? Yup, that’s this baby. And woven in is a beautiful story of two bruised souls fighting to survive who collide because of an adorable little girl and find that maybe they don’t have to fight alone anymore.
I adored Kingston and Sawyer from the start. Both are stuck in horrible situations and are doing all they can to take care of those that they love. I loved King’s kindness and Sawyer’s fire. The attraction between them is undeniable, but I loved how they saw who each other was beneath the surface and found solace in it. And then there is Hadley. This little girl is all kinds of amazing and adorable and I loved how she not only brought Kingston & Sawyer together, but brought out the best in both of them.
This was a great read. The pacing was good and the writing seamless and the twists were done quite well. There are triggers, but they are a necessary part to the story and who the characters are. And speaking of the characters. There are some that I loved and some I loved to hate, there really wasn’t much gray area, well, maybe with one or two, but that’s also what made it a great book and I definitely wouldn’t mind if more books would take place in this world just so I can get updates on Kingston, Sawyer & Hadley and everyone else (even the baddies).
I should preface this with the fact that I’m a huge Stacy Marie Brown/S. Marie fan. Literally anything and everything she writes.
I like sports romance BUT I ABSOLUTELY LOVE DARK MMA SPORTS ROMANCE. Hands down one of my top favorite tropes. That being said, this was my first book of 2024 and oh man am I glad that it was.😂 Listen, listen, listen, if you like Warwick farkas….. then you’re gonna love Kingston. If you don’t know who Warwick is, I feel bad for you and highly recommend you go read her Savagelands series ASAP and if you can stop yourself from being sucked into that vortex, I highly recommend you reading Down For The Count. 😍❤️ Kingston reminds me of a human version of Warwick… but with more humanity 😂 iykyk. 😉 Plot? 10/10 the perfect amount of world building, character development, relationship building, suspense, and action. Strong fmc? 10/10 oh how I loved her mama bear side 🥊 Spice? 10/10- this doesn’t need anymore explanation 😂 Grumpy, growling alpha male? 10/10
I want this book in every format to add to my S. Marie shelf 😍 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Seriously a solid 5 star read. 10/10 recommend
🥊 mafia romance 👧🏻 single parent 🥊 former boxer MMC 👧🏻 forbidden romance 🥊 dual POV 👧🏻 HEA
📍"We understood being trapped. Screaming while no one heard us.”
This was an all consuming love story that seemed hopeless. An all consuming love story that threatened to destroy everything they had, everyone they loved. Sawyer and Kingston risked everything as they gave into the invisible string that kept bringing them together.
But this was also a story between a little girl who felt different and a stranger who was as… unique. A stranger who became a friend.
Disclaimer: I received this book at no cost from the publisher/author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. I am leaving a voluntary review and all opinions are my own.
This is one of those books that affects you so completely that it stays with you after you finish the last page.
S. Marie is an author that I am familiar with and she always brings me to my knees with her gritty and compelling stories. The addition of Victor Rahl to this story excited me and I felt that they complimented each other in the writing. The writing style felt so seamless and I couldn't read the pages fast enough. I loved the layers to the plot and the execution of the story. The world was so vivid that I was sucked right into the world.
The complexity of these characters really stood out from the start. Sawyer and Kingston are alike in a lot of ways underneath the surface. I loved all the parallels. Both main characters were vibrant and distinct. They were both relatable and I was able to form an instant connection with them. Hadley was a darling. The character development was excellent and it drove the story perfectly. It was so easy to fall irrevocably for these characters.
This was a forbidden romance that was oh-so-good. I loved the dynamic that Kingston and Sawyer had with one another. They had chemistry for days. I loved their relationship and I loved the spice. I love the single mom trope, especially when paired with a bad boy trope.
Overall, this was an intense story that will definitely leave you down for the count. This is one of those books that you just can't put down. If you like dark and gritty stories with plenty of emotion, this is your book. Memorable characters, a compelling plotline, and a hot romance made this one a knockout for me.
Wow the authors hook you right in from the start and keep you turning the pages until the very end. King is on the verge of becoming a pro boxer when it's all taken away from him in the blink of an eye. Now he is a postman by day, and at night, in an underworld boxing ring captive to the brothers Dutch and Dom, who pay his mother's medical bills. Sawyer is mom to a daughter, Hadley, who is an elective mute. King comes across Hadley on his postal route when the babysitter who should be looking after her is leaving Hadley alone outside. This riles King up as, over a week, he finds Hadley is constantly by herself outside and has a couple of run-ins with the neighbor, who he thinks is Hadley's mom. Neighbour Nova soon puts him correct in that respect. King stops to chat with Hadley when delivering mail to their apartments and feels protective of her. He gives Sawyer a piece of his mind about her babysitter. Despite their hate for each other at first, they become attracted to each other. But King knows he can't have anything to do with her and drag her into his world. Things start getting dangerous for the pair when their present collides, and danger is after them. I received an arc for my voluntary honest review for NNBB. If you love a boxing romance with lots of hotness, angst, and danger, then you will love this book. I loved it so much I could have read it all over again. I hope to read more by these two authors.
ARC Review: Down for the Count Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️
Bad boy in shining armor? Yes, please! Down for the Count delivers gritty underground fights, mafia entanglements, and the kind of broken hero you can’t help but root for. Kingston “The King” Reyes is the perfect mix of dangerous and vulnerable—caught between the shadows he can’t escape and the light he doesn’t believe he deserves.
The romance with Sawyer is forbidden, electric, and layered with all the right tension. Add in the sweetness of her daughter, and this story pulls hard on the heartstrings while still delivering plenty of heat.
If you love a mafia romance with a single mom, a hero fighting his demons, and spice that burns just right, this book checks every box.
Thank you to @author.s.marie and @hambright_pr for sending me an ARC to review.
Sawyer is a mama bear to her four-year-old Hadley, her number one priority. Kingston is a post man by day and an underground fighter by night. His love for his mother and the need to help her fight against her cancer is what drives him. And while he is ruthless, he shows a tender side to Hadley, looking out for her from day one and fighting his attraction to Sawyer. Indeed, Sawyer and Kingston face an uphill battle. Each stuck under the devil’s thumb beyond their control, they find themselves as pawns of the mafia and with no hope in sight. However, their connection, strengthened by the bond Hadley forges with Kingston, is a light shining through the dreariness of their circumstances. There are unexpected twists here that keep you with bated breath, wondering and hoping that things will work out and that the villains get their just deserts. Their journey definitely packs a punch emotionally, and this makes the conclusion all the more satisfying. Overall, this was a good read.
This honestly might be a case of it’s not the book, it’s me. I see the potential in the story, but I’m just not invested enough nor do I like the characters enough to continue at the moment.
This is a really emotional and angsty read with mob/underground fighting setting. I loved Sawyer and King, and of course Hadley. Some great twists and action along with some steam. Really good read.
The title of this book is so very appropriate because I am down for the count after finishing it. Down for the Count is a dark, gritty standalone with mafia, suspense, forbidden love, forced proximity, a medium burn, and high spice. I was drawn in quickly and, while I did feel like there was a little too much internal dialogue at times, I remained engaged throughout the book.
Sawyer is a single mom struggling to make ends meet while caring for her daughter, Hadley, who suffers from selective mutism. She is protective, feisty, and puts her daughter above all else. Kingston is a former boxer whose injury during a fight derailed his dreams of going pro. Now beholden to two shady brothers, “Dom” and “Dutch,” Kingston is a postal worker by day and a fighter in the brothers’ illegal underground fight club by night. A chance meeting between Kingston and Hadley while Kingston is delivering mail results in an instant connection between the two and sets the course for our MCs to meet. An initial confrontation between Kingston and Sawyer leaves them both rattled and struggling to fight the pull each feels toward the other.
This book is pretty intense. There is a running theme of being trapped that ties the characters together in a really compelling way. Kingston is trapped by his debt to Dom and Dutch; Sawyer is trapped by the powerful and controlling father of her child; and Hadley is trapped by her body’s reaction to her trauma and anxiety. Their struggles and perseverance in the face of those struggles made me form an emotional attachment to these characters. I hurt for them, I rooted for them, and I kept them with me after I finished reading. I thoroughly enjoyed Down for the Count and would highly recommend it!
Warning - This book is dark and has content that may be triggering for some, including domestic violence, attempted SA (not by MMC), and off page dubious consent via threat/coercion (not by MCs). None of these scenes are graphic, but check your triggers if you may be sensitive to these things.
I received a free, advanced copy of this book, and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
I have ARC read the book so here I'm leaving a review voluntarily. Sawyer and King have my heart. The plot had my mind blown. Forbidden love, single mom, MMA,mafia I drowned in the storyline. I suggest for you guys to go grab a copy.
The story was great!!! The writing… I’m a little disappointed, this definitely needs a little more editing. Some of the sentences weren’t making sense, and they didn’t really flow well together. <— okay, done with the rant, lol let’s get into the story!
First off, Kingston, freaking hot and sexy as hell! King was hard and rough and so disgustingly beautiful he seemed like a god. Boxing was his world and he owned it! Going to battle with his rival, Kingston had nothing to lose and the world to gain! But one wrong move, one distraction costs him his dreams and the future he pictured for himself and his mother.
Sawyer, a bad ass mom who would do anything for her young daughter Hadley, doesn’t take crap from anyone! She’s had a pretty rough go at life and she is working as hard as she can so she can finally get away from her crazy Ex.
Sweet Hadley has a speech disability that deals with anxiety and past trauma. She does trust easily, especially new people. But one day when she’s outside playing by herself and almost hit by a mail truck she meets a man that she puts her full trust in. Kingston see’s what Hadley can’t say with words and forms a bond.
When Kingston goes to confront Sawyer about the type of mother she is, he finds a woman he won’t be able to walk away from!
This book was intense to say the least. It was raw and gritty and so outrageous. I really loved every minute of reading this. The love, security and easy friendship they found in each other was everything. The way they fought their feelings and then in turn fought for one another was amazing.
With a few editing tweaks this story would be freaking phenomenal! It would have been five stars for me, but since I feel the way I do about the writing, I’m giving it four stars! Still an outstanding book. Highly recommend!
If you love dark romance that is intense and gritty, I think you will absolutely love this book! This story is raw and emotional and full of suspense and tension - oh the tension! Kingston and Sawyer have this amazing chemistry that just builds.
Both of these characters are struggling - Sawyer is strong and smart and will do whatever it takes to raise her daughter Hadley. Yes Kingston is brooding and growly and has things to work through but underneath that exterior he cares very deeply for those few who are important to him.
I love how Hadley could see through to who Kingston truly was on the inside - they had such a special relationship.
✨What To Expect: 🥀 Mafia 🖤 Suspense 🥊 MMA Fighter 🚪 Forced Proximity 💋 Intense 🔥 Gritty ❤️🔥 Alpha Male 🚫 Forbidden 🩷 Single Mom 🌪️ Twists
I was provided with a copy of this book for my honest review, and overall I liked it. Mafia romance isn't my favourite genre but this was a bit different than falling for the mobster. King and Sawyer are both 'owned' by brothers who are building their corrupt empire. Stuck and unable to escape, they find each other without knowing the other is in the same position. The attraction is instant and deadly, once their connection is discovered. On the run and trying to find a way to escape, an opportunity comes but not without it's risks.
This one has spice, danger, violence and the love of a special little girl who brings hope to King's life. Solid writing, I'm giving this one 3.5 stars.
I was so lucky to get this book as an arc. It was such a fun heartfelt read. I loved Kingstons gruff exterior but loving interior. This book was filled with the perfect balance of spice, drama, action and romance. I will definitely be reading more books by s Marie and recommending to everyone. Also will be looking for more book covers with Victor as well!!!
❗️I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily❗️
Kingston “King” Reyes, was on his way to making it big in the boxing world, until one fight shattered all his hopes and dreams. Forced to keep going, he takes a job at the post office delivering mail. He also has to fight for the “Brothers” Dom & Dutch, who pay his mother’s cancer treatment bills. They hold his “leash” if he wants to continue to help his mother.
Sawyer had a four year old daughter named Hadley, and she’d do anything to protect and take care of her daughter. Even asking her ex (and daughter’s father) for help, even though she knows nothing comes without strings attached. Hadley is a shy kid who doesn’t open up easily, but when she sees the new mailman, something draws her to him.
Neither Sawyer nor Kingston expected to find one another, especially the way they did. Unfortunately, they can never be, the strings that hold them both, are much too tight…. But something keeps drawing them back together.
Includes - forbidden romance - Single mom - Fierce fmc - Bad boy mmc - MMA - Mafia - Mental health rep - Spicy - HEA
This book captured me from the first chapter. It started gritty and had me invested to need to know what happened next. I instantly fell for the FMC and the MMC as they were both singularly and together interesting.
The FMC Sawyer is a single mother, she’s stuck in the never ending cycle of trying to keep their heads above water. With no family or friends to help she works to pay for childcare while feeling guilty she needs childcare and she works to pay for therapy for her little girl Hayden who has a speech development delay that she’s trying everything to understand and help Hayden with. Hayden’s father only helps when he wants to check on his possessions and everything comes with a catch.
The MMC Kingston almost had it all, a champion, bright lights, security and a career at the tip of his fingers. His reality is he’s working all hours he can and he’s caught under the thumb of loan sharks who own everything about him, own him, to pay off his expensive medical bills and his mothers while putting his past and talents to their underground competitions. No matter what he does, how much he works, his cycle is trying to endlessly pay them back, look after his mum and repair his broken and beaten body.
When he unintentionally comes across Hayden, the little girl who is quiet but sees him as something more than the big scary fighter he can’t help but be taken in by this sweet little girl, there’s no stopping it when he sees her mother.
What I loved about this book was the realism in sometimes no matter how hard you work you’re stuck in a cycle where you’re nothing but trapped. Trying to work a way out with no solution. I resonated with that as I think many others will. I loved that Sawyer was unashamedly her and as any mother would do anything for her daughter. King was trying to make the best of what life threw him while it constantly knocked him down. I loved that he had a normal everyday job when he was so close to ‘celebrity’ that good work is good work. I could feel the connection between the characters, the helpless to try and make their situations better and this book was genuinely a really gritty read that had me finishing it in a day.
Why I only gave it 3⭐️/3.75⭐️ *No spoilers* There were some writing errors that should have been easily picked up, easy fixes. There was a scene where sawyer was wearing some important jewellery, one minute it was off, then on, then off again within the same scene, when you read it you know why it’s important. My biggest flex was the party scene. Sawyer just found out some information that had her so emotional she felt physically wounded by King, yet was quick to ‘have him’ I understand the scene I think was supposed to show king as much a victim as her, however some of the conversation over it, way it was spoken about felt too, it’s no big deal to be with someone else, when that’s the opposite emotion the character was showing. It was literally hours, if that, Sawyer was supposedly ok with being with him without protection, I couldn’t quite wrap my head around her feeling ok about that. Also the end, maybe because I’m in England the end drama with the amount of ammunition and location just seemed a little extreme and too far fetched for me, like movie level extremes but maybe it’s a location thing why I couldn’t quite believe it as it’s not something that would ever happen in this country. So that might be a cultural thing.
Overall I really enjoyed this book. I wanted to keep reading, it was a book I didn’t want to put down and I felt like the plot of the book was something different to my normal and that I really enjoyed because the basis of it was captivating and addictive.
I do think this a defiantly a book that others would enjoy just as much!
First, I want to say that this review really shouldn't turn someone away from this book. I love SMB, but I HATE contemporary romance.
I picked this one up because I have highly enjoyed many of her other series and thought I would give it a go. Especially because you have an illegal underground boxer tossed into the mix. That makes it feel a little less contemporary in my head, but in the end, it still is just that.
Another thing to note is that I hate a pregnancy trope, but I am very okay when kids are already in the picture, and ironically, my favorite parts have been the domestic bliss between the characters.
Back to the story now...
Sawyer is a single mom trying to keep it together for her daughter Hadley. She is in an interest situationship with her baby daddy and is fighting tooth and nail to remain independent. So when a certain USPS worker comes flying at her in a rage over her daughter, she gets defensive. Because he points out things she's already feeling guilty over.
Kingston almost made it big in the boxing world, but one hit took him out. Now, he fights illegally for those who control his finances in a way. He still has his day job working for USPS, and so when he gets a new route and finds a 4 year old being neglected, he loses it. He knows the dangers in the world, and Hadley is too innocent to learn those.
Sawyer and Kingston bond over Hadley, but the chemistry between the two keeps them together and pretty solid if you ask me.
So why would I give this 3.5 stars? Well, some stuff just felt unbelievable, sloppy, and just plain rushed (more towards the end). I love that everything went to shit but the way it was written just fell flat for me. All the build-up towards what IS and COULD happen just went away with a gun fight with people turning on each other, which anyone could see a mile away. I think that's what my main issue with contemporary is, being predictable. The one great thing about this is that there is no miscommunication between the characters and that made it better for me.
I really wanted to love this story so I hope someone else does!
Adding onto this: Amazon says this is a mafia romance, I didn't get those feels much. Obviously it's hinted and a big part of it but it's kinda just a 2 man crew who buy their loyalty.
S.Marie and V Ragl are new authors to me and what a great 1st book for me to read of theirs. My mind was instantly fascinated from the start until the finish. It was refreshing for me to read a book with both characters struggling financially and trying to make ends meet. Stacey and Victor both have written a fantastic story plot and have delivered it perfectly. Kingston had it all and one more fight and he will be able to be successful and give his mum the luxury life she deserves. Unfortunately when it comes to boxing, one wrong move and everything can change. That was what happened to him 💔. Sawyer is a single mum and she was so strong. Her cute daughter Hadley was her everything and she was fighting to try and give her a good life. Her ex is a manipulative *ahem* and was making life hard for her. She was trapped. King's fateful night has left him in debt and 2 vicious and manipulative brothers have him binded to do their bidding. He was trapped. His mums health was the only thing keeping him going. They had him fighting illegal fights in return to pay for debts they imposed on him. One more knock to his brain and it will be his last. I really loved how they both met. Hadley was the connection and deep down without speaking (she has selective mutism) she instantly connected with King. She saw him for who he was. She knew he will be the one for them, she just was waiting for Sawyer and King to catch up. The way their relationship grew was just beautiful and emotional. I won’t give anymore away but it is a must read. When both of their lives merge, it pushes them to get together even though it is forbidden now. I was so worried about the ending because I really couldn't see how they both could get away from the people manipulating them. But where there is love, anything is possible. This book was very emotional, heartbreaking, exhilarating, action filled, drama, secrets, Dark themes, so much pain, laughter, love and Steamy. The characters life was so real, they were easily relatable and felt so real. I will definitely be reading more from these authors.
“I’m not gentle,” he rumbled in my ear. “And I don’t do safe words. You fight, I f*ck you harder.”
“Good.” I turned my head. “F*ck me until I can’t walk, Kingston.”
Sawyer has a horrible ex/baby daddy making her and her daughter Hadley’s life miserable. Hadley is diagnosed with selective mutism and Sawyer is desperate to get her therapy to help but her grocery store job doesn’t cover anything. Her ex Danny holds any help he gives over her head while refusing to be a real father to their kid while threatening to take it all away and take their daughter away from her. Kingston had dreams of making it as a professional boxer until one bad hit took it all away before he even had a real chance. Then his mom got cancer and he indebted himself to two brothers, Dom & Dutch, who paid for his hospital bills and his mom’s chemo but in exchange he had to fight in their underground illegal boxing matches. He also works as a postman to help pay off his debts & take care of his mother since her cancer has come back and she is dying. He gets a new route added to his load when the USPS had to cut employees, where he sees four year old Hadley unattended after he almost hits her when she runs into the street where he’s driving his mail van. After finding her neglectful babysitter and calling her a “Karen” he is forced to go back and apologize when she tries to have him fired. When Kingston finally meets Sawyer he gives her an earful about how neglected he’s seen Hadley be the entire week he’s been delivering mail. This starts a series of events neither planned on where they fall into an affair, her ex threatens her and forces her to be his fiancée, they both discover her ex is one of Kingston’s bosses who own his debt and thus his life, they realize the brothers are mafia and connected to the mayor & senators & judges & the police chief, they fall in love, they get caught by her ex/forced fiancé and almost are killed, murder and break ins and the fbi all get mixed in too. I enjoyed it, lots of spice and tender moments with Hadley and breaking her out of her shell as the two fall for each other. Very sweet HEA in the epilogue after all the stress and death and running from before. Very enjoyable!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.
This is a dark romance that does have MMA fighting in it. I don't know that I would say it is truly a MMA romance. No doubt the main male character is a MMA fighter but then he isn't and you will see why. King was on the verge of becoming a pro fighter, until he wasn't. Now he is a postman delivering the mail every day and owned at night by a group of terrible humans all to help his mom. When he almost hits a little girl in the street of his new route, little does he know that his life is about to change forever. Sawyer is a struggling single mom that met the wrong man and he left, but he still lets her live in a place he owns and is absolutely horrible to her and little Hadley. When he finally meets Hadley's mom there is some serious chemistry between the two of them. However, the are both in really terrible positions because of the people in their lives. Will they ever be able to get out of the messes and make a life for themselves? You have to read and find out. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone. I will say that this book keeps you hooked from the beginning to the end and has a lot of twist and turn. I loved King, Sawyer and Hadley. I thought that King was fierce and in a bad spot and trying to survive and help his mom the only way he knew how to. Saywer is a hard working mom that is trying to be the best mom she can be. She works as hard as she can to provide for Hadley. I loved when Hadley stole the show in this book. What a darling little princess she is. I thought that the love story at his core was very sweet and just melted my heart.
What more could I ask for? Sacrifice, redemption, fiercely protective main characters...it's everything. Down for the Count is Gritty, dark, sexy and absolutely enthralling and holy hellfire hot.
S. Marie and Victor Rahl really delivered with Down for the Count.
From page one S. Marie and Victor Rahl grab you and don’t let go. This was such an emotional, gritty and heartfelt read. Sawyer and Kingston meet during tremulous times in their lives, but their chemistry is undeniable. Down for the Count is an absolutely wonderfully written, angsty read brimming with action, suspense, twists and heartwarming love.
Kingston is a talented fighter whose love for his mother and devastating circumstances drove him to the dark underbelly of his city and the mobsters that rule the underground fighting ring there. He’s the perfect alpha with a soft side who will fight for and protect those he loves.
Sawyer is a fiercely protective mother whose life is being held over her head while she struggles to provide for her daughter Hadley. She does everything in her power to provide for Hadley as the sweet little girl navigates trauma the only way she knows how.
Little do Kingston and Sawyer know, they have more in common than they could ever imagine.
I highly recommend anything that S. Marie writes, and this contemporary read is no different. Victor’s writing perfectly complements every page, and I could not put it down. This is one of those rare books that brought tears to my eyes.
DOWN FOR THE COUNT . . . Intense. Determined. Driven. Protective. Love. Respect. Abuse. Violence. Selective mutism?
We begin with a flashback to the time when he was all on top and then it all crashed down around him. All in just a hair's breadth of time. It was all taken away. The future he dreamed of and worked so hard for, over. It just took that simple moment. Now, years later, his life is not what he was planning for. But here comes another moment in time. A moment that will change his life yet again. Will this one be a good or bad change? Kingston is not sure but willing to move forward anyway.
She thought herself in love years ago. She was wine, dined, and bedded. The difference between her and the others. She chose to keep her baby. She was willing to do almost anything to make sure her daughter would have what was needed. She was not looking to bankroll a high life. When she missed the signs of something being wrong with her daughter she blamed herself. Selective mutism, this was something she never heard of. Now, she has to deal. Sawyer did not see dealing with him in the picture.
Down. Dirty. Raw. Intense. Action. Suspense. Sweet. Romance. Reunion. Relief. There was a lot in this story. There were moments when I did not think Kingston would make it to the end. Down for the Count gave a good ending but it was not the highlife ending some may wish for. It was sweet and pulled a little bit on the heart strings. I recommend picking this one up.
I just finished Down for the Count and I'm still trying to catch my breath. S. Marie and Victor Rahl didn't just write a book; they threw me into a ring and didn't let me out until the final bell rang. And let me tell you, I'm bruised, I'm emotional, and I am absolutely, 100% here for it.
This isn't your average romance. It's raw. It's gritty. It's that beautiful, dangerous kind of love that you know you shouldn't want but can't help but crave. Kingston "The King" Reyes is a hero unlike any other. He's broken, he's lost, and he's fighting for more than just himself. You feel every punch, every scar, every ounce of his struggle. And Sawyer... oh, Sawyer. She's not just a damsel in distress; she's a force of nature, with her own darkness and a strength that matches his. Their connection isn't a slow burn; it's an explosion.
From the very first page, I was hooked. The writing is so powerful and vivid, you can practically smell the sweat and blood of the underground fights. The tension between Kingston and Sawyer is off the charts, and the stakes feel so real. You're not just reading a story; you're living it with them. I found myself yelling at the pages, crying with the characters, and cheering for their every small victory.
If you're looking for a book that's going to grab you by the throat, demand your attention, and leave you completely breathless, this is it. Down for the Count is a knockout, and S. Marie and Victor Rahl have officially become my new favorite writing duo. I'm telling everyone I know to read this. Seriously, what are you waiting for? Go get it now!
We enjoyed this story the characters were fantastic and little Hadley stole the show that little girl just melted our hearts.
Kingston & Sawyer were two people who found themselves in impossible situations and saw no way out they are different in the why of the matter but, this couple comes to learn they have more in common than they ever thought.
This story was emotional and steamy and heart-melting and at times heart-pounding. The story had its ups and downs and from the start, this couple had so many strikes against them it all seemed impossible but, one little girl and mother wormed her way into a heart that seemed almost dead yet was brought back to life again.
Sawyer is a fierce mother with a fiery temper who loves her daughter with everything she has yet sometimes it never feels enough. A struggling single mom who can't catch a break and has a controlling ex who makes their lives miserable.
Kingston is a loving son who makes part of his living as a boxer. This man is alpha-loving compassionate, fierce, dangerous, an alpha man, and a dominant man when it comes to sex but, when it comes to a little girl he is nothing but, putty in her hands.
The story ending was so touching it brings tears to your eyes. We are glad this couple found one another they were perfect for one another both knowing how life can be so cruel yet they found one another among flames and ashes. We loved this one.
Kingston was one winning fight away from going pro but things went sideways. In the present day, life isn't great for him whatsoever as he's now working a government job by day, and is owned by shady men so he's participating in illegal fights at night (and other things) or else they'll kill his mother. Sawyer got pregnant by a man who wasn't who she thought he was, and he's a terrible father to boot. He's trying to force her into marrying him, and she's doing everything she can to avoid that but every time she needs help with her precious daughter, there are serious strings. Oh, and her sweet baby is retreating into herself & very rarely talks these days. It's weird that these two people would cross paths, and yet they do when his mail route gets changed up. The man with demons & the silent tiny human bond surprisingly, and let me tell you, those were my favorite moments even though the suspense was on point (that's usually my favorite parts in books). So there's so much sweetness with a humorous kicker between those two that I couldn't get enough of. There's also some serious heat between Kingston & Sawyer so the sparks flying ignited in big ways. Finally, there's that suspense that had the twists coming in hot & serious action popped off from there making this story leveled up perfection in my eyes, so this team should never stop writing together! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Ugh, I love a good mafia-style romance and mix in a little MMA? I’m here for it every single time. This one was gritty, and full of heart-pounding tension that pulled me in from page one.
Kingston Reyes used to be The King.. living for the roar of the crowd and dreams bigger than the ring. But one hit changed everything. Now he’s fighting for survival in an underground world where sin and violence are the currency, and his only reason for staying in the game is the mother who depends on him.
Sawyer. A single mom with her own shadows, strength, and secrets. She’s everything he shouldn’t want, but everything he can’t stay away from. And her little girl somehow sees right through him, past the bruises and the darkness, to something pure he thought he lost.
Kingston and Sawyer are both caught in impossible situations, and it’s heartbreaking how trapped they are. But beneath all that pain is a story about finding hope through another person when you thought you were past saving.
And the chemistry? Off. The. Charts. 🔥 That kitchen scene?! 🫣🤭🥵 LAWRD HAMMERCY.
“I fuck like I fight,” he growled. “With no mercy.” I was gone. Absolutely feral for Kingston. 🫠
Do I enjoy MMA? Nope. Do I enjoy a man who can protect himself and me too? Absofreakinglutely. Hot every day of the week.
For my genre hoppers. This book hits hard!! equal parts grit, longing, and redemption.
