Gabi isn't looking for love. At all. After her disaster of a relationship with Michael, the last thing she needs is another round in the ring. But, a chance encounter with Terrence has her second thinking that. If only he weren't off limits...
Follow along with Gabi and Terrence as they navigate the stages of a relationship that was never meant to go further than a single night. Will they be able to overcome the challenges of family and career to build something that could last?
CCJ knows that she can write a damn book! This is one of her older books, but trust me when I say it doesn't make a difference. This is a work place romance, but I think that it sets itself apart from other workplace romances because of the character development. CW: physical abuse
I ramdomly decided to pick up Strictly Professional because it was available through Hoopla at my library. It was recently added and this was a particularly series by CCJ that I had not heard many people discuss. It focuses on two characters: Gabi and Terrance. Gabi moved to ATL to get away from her ex and parents to begin her career at a law firm. She makes the decision to go out one night with a friend and ends up meeting Terrance. The two share a kiss and believe that they won't come into contact again until they realize that they would be working at the same firm. It was amazing watching these two continuously fight their feelings for each because of their job. Keep in mind there was no fraternization policy so they weren't keeping it a secret from other employees; however, it is clear that the two don't want it to interfere with their goals and ambitions.
Gabi and Terrance had chemistry and even when they spent page after page denying it, it's easy to feel it as a reader. Any person that knows me as a reader, knows that romance for me is all about the chemistry. I like for authors to make me feel like I should be rooting for these individuals to fall in love even when they're blind to it. CCJ captured those feelings perfectly with these two characters. There was also extremely strong character development especially in regard to Gabi. There were some toxic relationships that Gabi fought to get control of the entirety of this book particularly her ex and her parents. While I expected Michael to be completely unlikeable, I didn't expect the same for her parents. They made her life a living nightmare and saw her as no more than cattle that needed to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. As a reader, I was shocked at some of the conversations that Gabi had with her mother in particular, but I respected Gabi for her strength to stand up to them. She kept going to achieve her dream regardless of how her parents felt. I admired her even more for the strength it took to walk away from her ex Michael. He showed no respect to her, but expected her to be willing to deal with him and rearrange her life's dreams and goals to cater to him. I know quite a few people in my personal life who have been willing to deal with nonsense similar to that of Michael in order to maintain a comfortable lifestyle. Gabi refused to let that be a deterrent in her life. While Gabi felt a little more easy going, Terrance was a little more uptight. He was solely focused on his career and did not want any relationship to stand in the way of possibly making partner. Gabi melted that hardness about Terrance away and I'm glad that he allowed her to do so. It brought out a more fun and engaging side to him from the perspective of the reader.
This book isn't 100% percent slow burn like some other romance novels I've read; however, it is slow enough that readers really truly get to see the romance develop between Gabi and Terrance. Nothing felt rushed. It felt so natural and readers can't help but root for them the entire way. With that being said, I definitely see myself becoming more and more obsessed with CCJ writing style. There is something about it that beautifully captures the emotions of her main characters. The pacing is always great with just enough action to make the romance more engaging. This book definitely did not disappoint and I'm looking forward to reading even more by CCJ.
This was a really fun and quick story about two lawyers working together. I really loved their first encounter and how Gabi realized that Michael was her new mentor at work. Gabi is also dealing with overbearing parents and an overbearing ex. If you want a one night moment at a bar turned to something more, you should read this one!
I loved, loved, loved Strictly Professional but, I disliked damn near every character in this book. Gabi, Terrence, Tarryn, and Regina tapped dance on my last nerve. The females played games with the men and Terrence acted like a female. He stayed in his feelings behind Gabi. Whew chile, the dramatics! When Gabi wasn't being hot and cold and Terrence stopped acting like a girl, I actually liked them as a couple. I thought they had great chemistry and their instant attraction to each other was believable. I just wish they didn't spend 90% of the book going back and forth on whether or not they should be together. Gabi and Terrence were so exhausting at times, I wanted them to forgo the relationship and just be co-workers. It should not have taken that long for them to finally come together romantically. And, I have no words to describe Gabi's parents. They were the worst! Who raised them?!!! Michael was a borderline stalker and her mama and daddy encouraged his behavior just so she would marry a doctor. Again, who raised these people?!!! Then, come to find out, Gabi and Terrence are already broken up in book two! I'm so not looking forward to reading Unfinished Business. I mean, I'ma read it. I'm just not looking forward to it. While I was not a fan of the characters in this book, Strictly Professional was still very good and I would definitely recommend it.
This was a really quick read with a forbidden office romance! I liked the setup and the heroine but sadly never cared for the hero. Tbh I don't think I'm invested enough to even continue with their sequel.
Strictly Professional was a great read for me. I finished it quickly because the writing was smooth and effortless, and the characters immediately engaging and likable. This was not a shock-and-awe romance, it was a slice of two lives, intersecting--the right man, the right woman, at the right time.
Gabi's got a problem. She has an ambition to pursue a career as a lawyer and her parents and ex-boyfriend believe she should instead become a trophy wife. Desperate to escape them, she moves to Atlanta, determined to become independent and self-determining. On one of her first nights in her new home, she goes out with her roommate and meets Terrence. Their attraction is instantaneous and intense, and but for said roommate, that first meeting would have more likely than not resulted in more than one interrupted kiss.
Terrence is, like Gabi, very career-focused and not at all interested in a relationship and though he finds this new woman he met during a night out with his best friend interesting, he's not on the market for anything smelling like permanence. And so he doesn't call. But as Fate would have it, Terrence and Gabi are destined not only to meet again, but to be forced to work closely together. Very, very closely.
I loved this writer's attention to the slow progression of a relationship from attraction, to admiration and respect, to friendship and finally to love. She detailed the little moments that make a couple a couple so well that I found myself yelling, "Kiss her, dammit!" or "Tell him you like him!" even as I delighted in the fact that their inability to do so was exactly like real life. The stories, moments and experiences that Gabi and Terrence shared were spot-on for how relationships happen, and I LOVED every moment. You could tell as you read their story that this writer was more interested in the "relationship" than the 'sparks' or 'passion'. No gratuitous sex, no raunchy encounters, just a man and woman, drawing ever closer to each other, fighting it every inch of the way.
What made this a four-star rather than five-star read for me was the portrayal of Gabi's parents and ex-boyfriend, Michael. These were three people who among them did not have ONE SINGLE redeeming quality. All of them were very plainly bad people. And my problem was that I don't believe there are any people who are that completely irredeemable. Particularly Gabi's parents who seemed willing to trade their daughter's happiness and even personal safety for status and appearances. I would have liked to see some indication that they were all more than a means to provide the obstacle to Gabi and Terrence's relationship. Where this author was incredibly successful with the two main characters, she lost steam with some of the secondaries.
I say some, because Gabi and Terrence's friends were all very well-defined and had distinct personalities that make you want to know them better. Only the villains were thinly-drawn. Clearly this writer has the talent to pull off multi-dimensional characters, so I would have loved to see it in the people we don't root for as much as we saw it in the people we did root for.
At the end of the day, however, I did enjoy this book and was intrigued by the teaser at the end for the follow-up to Strictly Professional, which offers tantalizing clues about where Terrence and Gabi end up. I'll be looking out for it for sure, and you should too, but first, read this one.
Another Winner! I love this story....I love how CCJ always given us a refreshing story about all aspects of life. It was so good to see Gabi's spitfire nature. I beamed with pride when she didn't allow Michael to bully her....I wished she had an opportunity to really get at her parents....I LOVE Terrence's supportive and protective nature with both Terrean & Gabi....I love the slow progression of the inevitable growing relationship between Gabi & Terrence. I Loved the relationship between her & Uncle Bobby....I knew Uncle Bobby & Vanessa had something going on....that was cute to me....This was a really good story and I can't wait until next month when book 2 is released. Of course, the narration was OUTSTANDING!!
I got this one because it was free with a couple other books by the author a few days ago.
Gabrielle (Gabi) has just moved to Atlanta to pursue a job within her Uncle's law firm. She just passed the bar and needed to get away from her overbearing parents. The night before her first day she goes out for drinks with her new roommate Regina. She meets Terrence at the bar and after lots of chill conversation they definitely feel a connection. So much so that he takes her home and leaves her with a searing kiss a promise to call.
Imagine Gabi's surprise when she walks into work the next morning and finds out the senior associate she's working for a year under is Terrence. Terrence wants to become partner and Gabi wants to become a senior associate so they both agree to keep it, you guessed it, strictly professional. However, neither one can't get thoughts of the other our of their mind and the space between professional and personal becomes more and more blurred over the span of several months.
I really enjoyed this read. Terrence is a bit of a workaholic but because mostly because he wants to provide for his sister and his auntie. They pester him about it but he won't hear of their protests. Gabi on the other hand is trying to make her own way because her parents want to control her life through any means necessary. They are truly obnoxious and have an old fashioned mentality about who they think Gabi should marry even if the guy is scum. In each other Terrence and Gabi find a kinship neither really realized they needed and I loved watching it blossom despite the insane amounts of sexual tension.
This is a really slow burn. There are also references to cancer and mental and physical abuse just as an fyi. But the end result is lots of love and learning about necessary truths in order to grow and be the best version of yourself for all the people you love.
Gabi and Terrence's story was very sweet. I was engrossed, watching them fall for each other while trying desperately to fight their feelings. Especially Terrence (with his fine self!). Looking forward to Part 2.
“Strictly Professional” is just a refreshing read. Christina C. Jones’ style is clean and to the point. She expresses wit, intelligence and familiarity with pop culture. Jones was easily able to have me forget about her voice, or her pen, and give way to the characters’ essence, solely. I felt like Gabi and Terrence were friends of mine—until I was ready for Terrance to make yet another move on me…I mean on Gabi!
Terrance was sexy and smooth. Gabi was feisty, smart, and showed vulnerability at just the right moments, making her soft and pink.
I swallowed this book whole! Once I read the last word, I went straight to Amazon to download the sequel.
Gabi's parents almost ruined this book for me. I cannot stand bougie ass people. Especially when they're abusive parents. They put me in abd mood. But I did love Gabi and Terrance. Another hit from CCJ. Happy reading!
A rounded 3.5 stars……Definitely not a favorite CCJ book of mine. Compared to the fire I’m used to from her, this story didn’t deliver. Don’t get me wrong it was an ok book but there was nothing that stood out or made it a memorable read. There were a few unnecessary characters in the story like her trash parents and the overall “plot” didn’t deliver. The story seemed to have drug out to the very end. No wow factor at all. I’m glad I’ve read enough of Christina’s books to know that this was out of character for her. Thankfully I had Wesleigh and Jakobi to get me through it because if I had read it, I probably wouldnt have finished it. Let’s see if part 2 can pull up the rear.
4.5⭐️ Anything CCJ writes imma eat up. I love her down. She’s one of my fav, and this one was no different.
I love a good office romance. This one gave me forced proximity and I love that for me because I love that trope >>>
Gabi just relocated to Atlanta to join her uncle’s law firm, having recently passed the bar exam. Needing space from her overbearing disrespectful ass parents, she sees this as a fresh start. The night before her first day, she heads out for drinks with her new roommate, Regina. At the bar, she meets Terrence, and after a night of easy conversation, they feel a strong connection. He takes her home, leaves her with a searing kiss, and promises to call. NEWSFLASH HE DONT! But get this, the next morning she walks into work and guess who she sees Terrence and now she has to work directly with him. But do they keep it strictly professional or does it turn into more?
3.5/5 ⭐️Cute little coworker love troupe! Not a fan of Gabi’s parents or ex and they all needed to be dealt with if you ask me! Personally Terrance was a little too much of a good guy. Overall the chasing game got old quick and the story really drags with them going back of forth of trying to be “professional.”
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I enjoyed Gabi and Terrence’s story. The foolishness she had to deal with Michael and her parents was ridiculous. She stood her ground and got the life she deserved.
first and foremost let me say i enjoyed the book! i love the (severely underrated) workplace romance trope and combined with a little forbidden love, i found this work to be very entertaining! gabi & terrance’s love story is…rocky to say the least. i mean, what would you do if you accidentally make out with your boss BEFORE you know he’s your boss? me personally, i’m transferring states 🤷🏾♀️ but gabi has already done enough moving trying to escape her loser ex and controlling parents. yes it’s awkward, but she and terrence vow to keep it “strictly professional!”
if you’re a fast-pace lover, this is definitely the book for you. there’s not even smoke before the flame and that’s exactly what i needed coming out of a long slump. because of the pace, there’s a lot of miscommunication and repetition to keep the story going, but nothing i find entirely unnecessary. well…except for [redacted], but i can live with that because my people still got their happy ending. 3 ⭐️s!
I don't want to call it cute, but their relationship ship was cute.
I would have been just fine without Gabi's horrible parents ever making an appearance in this book. I'm surprised she turned out as well as she did. I love Terrance's gentle but fiercely protective spirit for her. I can't wait to read more.
Had the characters been less immature this could have easily been a 5 star read. This was a really cute quick read, but I hated the whole stalker ex plot. This was my first read from this author and I am absolutely going to read more. Although I didn’t love it I would still recommend because I really did enjoy the characters and I love a workplace romance!
This was a super slow burn. The parents irritated me and Micheal just couldn’t take a hint really she told him directly and he still didn’t get it. But Gabi and Terrance gave love. He acted a lot irrational at times instead of communicating but they were cute and I like how they fell in love without knowing.
This is my first time reading this authors work, and it will not be my last. I absolutely loved Gabi and Terrence's story. I can tell that there is so much more to their story and I can't wait to read it.
Another book by Christina C Jones that I loved! Terrence and Gabi had a nice meet-cute and sparks when they first met, then had to keep it professional at work. Loved their banter with one another. Was a bit annoyed with Gabi's indecisiveness and her mixed signals towards Terrence but I get it, she was going through things. I straight hate her parents, like with a passion! Only time I didn't want characters to resolve their issues! I'm just glad Gabi had her Uncle Bobby to rely on. I loved Terrence's family! His relationship with his aunt and sister were goals. Cannot wait till the next book! There are a few characters in this book that I'm hoping have their own stories.
Narration by Wesleigh Siobhan and Jakobi Diem were on point as usual. Love their chemistry and the way they portrayed these characters. Highly recommend this book!
I'm making my way through Christina's catalogue and I've read nearly 15 of her books. Her new stuff has definitely greatly improved on this. This book felt much more dramatic than some of the things I've read recently and while I enjoyed the chemistry between Terrance and Gabi, her family was a lot. I get it, this happens but I wanted more of the love story. It felt super rushed at the end. If Goodreads had half stars, I'd say this is more a 3.5 but I can't give it a 4 lol. Not when her newer stuff is so much better
Gabi wanted to be a lawyer, but her family wanted her to follow in her dads footsteps and marry a man she didn't want to marry.
I didn't like that Gabi wanted Terrance one moment, then would change her mind... the back and forth got a little old. But these two became work friends... before giving in to their attraction.
Didn’t feel like it ends in a cliffhanger, but book 2 continues their storyline. The pace was good and the narration, I enjoyed. Still not a bad read.
This book was quick, simple and enjoyable. I can alway count on Christina C. Jones to do that for me. Her books are such great palate cleansers. I love a good office romance when done right. Gabi and Terrance were so cute and I love how everything ended for them 3.75/5 ⭐️
4.25 stars 🌟 I liked how their relationship was slow paced in the beginning, allowing them to cultivate a friendship before getting involved. That last chapter, though, that was way too rushed .
