Spirit Boys #1

Dead Things

Rate this book
Since Bran Tanda started working at the morgue, his life has changed. He’s spent most of his life denying his necromancer abilities, but now he knows there’s no other choice but to embrace it and learn as much as he can about it. No matter how much he hates it.

Jordan Amid is becoming more comfortable being around the dead. But they still overwhelm him and terrify him. The coldness and the heavy emotions he associates with being near a spirit are nearly too much for him to take. But for Bran, he’ll try.

Bran and Jordan soon realize there is more going on than they understand, and even Janis isn’t sure how to handle what she knows is coming for them. Mysterious markings continue to appear and unless they can learn more from the journals Bran finds at his house, there may be no hope for anyone.

A terrific start with this story. I enjoyed the characters and their mission. I’m excited to follow this story to see how Bran and Jordan defeat the evil and right the wrongs. If this story is any indication we’re in for a lot of excitement.

SPIRITS, NECROMANCERS AND EMPATHS!

The first book of the Spirit Boy series continues from all the other books- Mystical Markings and Things We Find at the Morgue.

Jordan and Bran are growing closer together while working at the morgue and discovering and learning things about their abilities and the markings…

Evil is lurking and planning an attack to bring down the world and this is where all the characters from all the books get together with the psychic Janice to fight back and gain control…

It is only the beginning of so much more than they ever expected and I look forward to more from this series!

Dead Things is the first book in the Spirit Boys Series and a continuation of Just Another Day at the Morgue. The adventures for Jordan and Tan continue. Mystery, magic, and romance abound. Not to mention a few ghosts floating about. It was interesting watching the two work their way to solving the mystery while slowly learning each other. Great Read.

Bran and Jordan work at a morgue despite their unique abilities as a necromancer and an empath, respectively. Though they are not particularly fond of the dead, they prefer isolation to the living, hence the odd jobs. Continuing from the prequel, Bran and Jordan, along with their psychic friend Janis and a paranormal investigating group, set out to find and resolve the disturbance in the spirit realm which has the potential to destroy the world as it is. And all this is started by Bran's evil mother, Brigitte, a power-hungry witch who is using the spirits of the dead and living people for her bidding.

Trigger Warnings~ working with dead bodies, ghost possessions, and descriptions of necromancy.

The story picks up from where the prequel- Just Another Day At The Morgue ended, with all of them preparing to fight against Brigitte by gathering information about her actions from spirits and other witches.

The story was interesting enough until it reached the middle. The main action scene was not narrated properly; instead, it was shown as a past event by summarizing from either Bran or Jordan's point of view or through their conversation. I think it would have been more engaging if the action scenes with other characters were elaborated on, rather than just being highlighted in between the thoughts and dialogues of the main characters. I lost some interest in the story when this happened again with the next action scene.

I felt that the story was too focused on Bran and Jordan, even though the other characters were shown to be important for the events in the novel. I couldn't really form my opinion on the supporting characters since their appearances were quite limited in person; they were mostly described from either Bran's or Jordan's perspective. This leaves little room for readers to have their own thoughts about the characters, as they are always shown with the main characters' opinions when recalling what happened previously.

Other than that, I enjoyed interacting with the author while I received the ARC and the prequel from her. It was an interesting story with a unique plot line and I am eager t see where the story goes further.

Unrest in the Spirit World . . .

The prequel to this story, "Just Another Day at the Morgue", introduced us to coroner Bran Tanda and his assistant Jordan Amid where we learn Bran can see and talk to the dead, his abilities slightly different from his mother Brigitte who is a necromancer. Jordan is an empath who deals with emotions and feelings and can experience the pain the deceased had endured. Bran’s mother has plans to steal all the power she can, even from her son, and if she’s allowed access to the strange marks and comes into her full power, she will destroy the world. Bran and Jordan need to be prepared to react because there is more going on than they fully understand, and even their psychic friend Janis isn’t sure how to win this time. Will going through the journals his mother left behind get them looking in the right direction? Will the powerful witches from Bran’s mother’s coven help Bran and Jordan in this fight? Or will they have only their close friends with them against the evil which threatens humanity? Will Bran be willing to finally embrace his full necromancer powers to protect Justice Rafferty and Jordan, because their dealings with the wraith may still not be over…

There is so much going on in this story and you will be fascinated with the progress Bran and Jordan make in figuring things out in this complicated situation. They are so much stronger together and Bran’s new “chosen status” will add a whole new dimension to the ongoing story line.

Dead Things is the first book in BL Maxwell's new series, Spirit Boys. The first introduction to the two main characters of this series is the novella Just Another Day at the Morgue. I highly recommend reading this first because there is a lot of good introduction to the guys, their lives and the possibilities for their series and their romance.

Bran Tanda and Jordan Amid work in the morgue of a big hospital. Jordan is an empath who is sensitive to the spirit world, while Bran can see and communicate with the spirits of the dead. Bran also has his trusty childhood dog, Buddy, who protects him as a ghost dog. Another character that we were introduced to in the novella was the spirit, Justice, whose motivations are still unclear and are fleshed out through the plot of this novel.

The series starts off with a mystery. There is some evil powers trying to mess with the spirit world and Bran and Jordan have been sucked in. They have connections to other magical people, particularly the witch Janis, who are helping them figure out what the darkness is and where they fit into the whole scheme of things.

The romance is slow burning. Which here I love because while there are sparks of chemistry, I love seeing Jordan and Bran get to know each other and form a strong friendship. There is so much going on and there is so much that has been left open for the next book. Can't wait to find out more.

3.5 This review is specifically for the audiobook version narrated by Allen Jeffries.

I had not read this book before listening to it. For me personally, I felt a little lost sometimes who certain side characters were or what their place was in this world. I would have probably followed along better in the written book or maybe if I had listened to the prologue first? Not sure. However, aside from that, the plot itself was easy to follow and I liked hearing Bran and Jordan spending more time together working (previously they were working at the same place but not exactly together) and trying to figure everything out. It was cute that Jordan volunteered to help Bran organize his house. I also liked when the use of nicknames "baby" was introduced - it finally started feeling like a romance. I enjoy the paranormal/urban fantasy feel of the book as well as Bran learning more about being a necromancer and Jordan just getting use to being around the dead more, including Buddy the cute dog. I look forward to seeing their relationship develop!

The narrator, Allen Jeffries, kept the voices distinct and that's really the most crucial aspect in an audiobook like this. I liked his voice fro Bran more than his voice for Jordan, which to be honest, was somewhat grating.

Jordan, who is susceptible to spirits, is helping Bran , who can see and speak to the dead, with an autopsy. Buddy, the ghost of Bran’s childhood dog is standing by Bran as he works. Then a spirit was supposed to have crossed over returns and takes over Jordan's body. He talks of many things that he needs to do to set something big into motion. Bran is worried that it's his mother who is causing issues. She's tried to take his power several times with no regard for what she's put him through. Their are marks on the dress woman. Bran has been going his mother's journals and hopes that he can find info on them there. He invites Jordan over and they find it but Bran has to call a member of his mother's coven. When he tells her who he going the mark on she invited herself over saying there's more going on than anyone thought. Then Bran realizes that his mother is still involved and working from the other side. Now it's all hands on deck as they try to put an end to Brigett's evil.
A beautiful love story mixed with supernatural action!.

While I am a fan of friends-to-lovers, I also enjoy watching two strangers navigate the whole treacherous trip to becoming a couple. In Dead Things, BL Maxwell gives us the second story. Bran and Jordan’s meeting at work is detailed in an earlier book, but they are still only work friends at the beginning of Dead Things. In addition to getting to know each other better, they are also learning more about their connections to the other side of the veil. They have help on this second task in the form of characters from the Valley Ghosts series. One of my favorite characters from that series, Janis, plays an important role in Dead Things. I could wish she would get her own book, but realize that is unlikely since it would not be MM. Something else BL Maxwell does well in their series is solve a major problem or threat in each book, so there is some closure, but leaves hints as to what is to come. Spoiler: it often is some version of the big bad. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am leaving this review voluntarily.

Will Bran ever get away from his evil mother?

This is a new series by BL Maxwell, called Spirit Boys. This series appears to be a bit of a spin-off of the Mystical Markings series. I enjoyed seeing all the guys again.

This narrator, Allen Jeffries, always takes a little bit of getting used to, with his OTT narration. Once you get into the story you get used to his style and after the first few chapters I don't even notice it anymore.

My thoughts are, before reading this series I would definitely recommend reading the first two books in the Mystical Markings series first. These three books flow into each other along with the characters. Yes, you could probably read this series without the other one first but, I don't know, why would you? The same guys appear in both series along with the same narrator narrating the story. It just makes sense to me to read them in the release order for full enjoyment.

Buddy is back, mommy dearest is still after Bran and all the power, new powers are unveiled, relationships grow, this is all around a fun listen

Even though this is the start to a new series, I think it's important to read the Valley Ghost and the Mystical Markings series, as well as The Cemetery Tour and Just Another Day at the Morgue first, in order to really enjoy the story. Because there's lots of characters. And even having read them all it's a bit of a head scratch at times.
A fast and fun read. Bran and Jordan are nerdily adorable. The have a sweet chemistry and the story is a bit of a slow burn. It takes six months til their first kiss. Which comes as the characters face danger.
Good pacing as they and their friends work to save the world from a witch who wants power over the dead. Good worldbuilding. Excellent secondary characters. Very enjoyable. The next book should be released quite soon. Can't wait.
And of course, the star of the book is Buddy, an emotional support, spirit dog.

This was a good story. I really liked the premise of a necromancer (Brad) and an empath (Jordan) working together at a morgue and solving a paranormal mystery that could otherwise have serious consequences. I, of course, know a little of empaths, but one who can feel all the emotions of the dead fascinated me. I thought the two of them made a cute match, a great team, and balanced each other well.

I listened to this narrated by Allen Jeffries. He does a good job creating different and distinct voices for all the characters and does put good energy into it. But it feels.. hmm. Dramatic in a way. Almost how I used to hear characters talk on kid-oriented TV shows and dubbed anime two decades ago. Not bad if you like that sort of thing, but I didn't care for it myself. Speeding it up a little kind of toned it down a bit and helped.

Overall: 4 stars
Performance: 3 stars
Story: 4 stars

Riveting, things are heating up! Bran and Jordan deal with mostly unhappy spirits on the daily. Buddy, the spirit of Bran's childhood dog lends comfort to Jordan even though he can't see him. Jordan, fsometimes eels pain when the spirits touch him. Edith, is a previous client who won't pass over and they think her case may require further review. Bran and Jordan are on edge because they know something "big" is coming but they don't know what, who or when. In the previous story, lots of folks were gathered and everyone realized they would need to get stronger, prepare and be ready. The story moves forward answering old questions almost as fast as it asks new ones. The story lives up to being a top notch mystery, a very exciting read. Nicely done! A good start as the book continues on with Jordan and Bran’s story from Just another day at the morgue novel.
Not a standalone book.

Jordan and Bran were part of the psychic community who solved mysteries of the ghosties who needed help. Monica was a deceased lady who was murdered and in limbo.
In the book prior, Bran hid his talents from Jordan as he was the necromancer for ghosts to talk too.
Scenes progress with Monica👻 speaking a warning at what could come at them soon.
Bran’s mother was involved which he was wary off but she was dead? A twist with a reappearance of a previous character comes back.
This has a number of paranormal beings into the story like demons, witches, ghost, and more.
A good story but something stopped me from loving it.

Bran Tanda and Jordan Amid work together, each possessing unique abilities dealing with spirits. Jordan is an empath with sensitivity to the spirit world, while Bran can see and communicate with the dead. Bran is accompanied by his loyal childhood dog, Buddy, who protects him as a ghost dog. Their lives intersect with mysterious forces as they encounter evil powers disrupting the spirit world. They're aided by other magical individuals, including the witch Janis, in unraveling the darkness and their roles within it. Amidst the unfolding mystery, a slow-burning romance develops between Bran and Jordan, characterized by a strong foundation of friendship.

When I read Just Another Day at the Morgue I fell in love with Jordan and Bran (and Buddy, his ghost dog) and I couldn’t wait for this book. I was not disappointed! So many things happen and change for the two of them (I am not spoiling anything, you must read it!) both in the way they interact with the spirits and between them relationship-wise. The story is fast paced and exiting, not really scary but definitely adrenaline-inducing! Things are set in motion and I expect the next book to be equally interesting.

Jordan and Bran worked at the morgue together. Bran has to come to terms with his necromancer powers even though he hates that side of himself but does help to solve cases. Jordan doesn’t like feeling the cold that is given off by the spirits but trying to handle it for Bran. Janis a witch is trying to help them and they need to decipher Bran’s mother’s journals to keep what is coming to save everyone. Good book!.

I really enjoyed this as a start of the Spirit Boys series, it had that element that I was looking for and enjoyed the overall feel and thought the world worked with what I wanted. The characters worked with everything that I was looking for and enjoyed the overall concept of the world. BL Maxwell has a great writing style and enjoyed getting to read this. It left me wanting to read more in this series and from the author.

The sins of his mother come back to haunt Bran and threaten his future with Jorden.

There are two main focuses of this book.

One being the ghosts and getting rid of the evil which is exciting and creepy. Watching both Bran and Jorden come into their own powers was fun and powerful.

Second is the love story that just flows naturally as it winds its way around Bran and Jorden.

It’s so nice not to be bogged down with so much drama that you just want to throw the book and they are adorably cute with one another.

I can’t wait to start book two

This is book 1 of the Spirit Boys Series. Bran and Jordan have unique abilities. One is an empath, and the other a necromancer. This makes things interesting as they navigate through intrigue and romance. Overall the story was interesting. I found the voices in narration to be irritating and detracted from the enjoyment of the book. I plan to read the actual book, instead of the narrated, before moving to the next in the series.

This book can either be read as a standalone, but also as part of a new series. If you really want the deeds on some of the characters 'Valley Ghosts' might help you.
I was wondering if I would enjoy this, but since I read a fair view of BL her MM PNR work I went all in. The book was entertaining and had suspense enough to keep me thinking how all will it all turn out.
So now I will be waiting for book two to see how all will go further.

Narrator: Allen Jeffries
Overall a good voicing as I swept through the chapters.

Triggers might apply for some

I like the characters of Bran and Jordan. I admit that I have not read the whole series this is attached to and that probably affected my enjoyment of this book. I have however read Another Day at the Morgue. That story is essential to this one. I felt a little lost in some places, like the story had jumped ahead or over some things. It is a good story but it felt a little disjointed to me. I would read more of these guys just to see how some of this resolves.

I love this world. Bran is a necromancer and Jordan is an empath who both work at a morgue. Things are happening quickly as they try to figure out how the ghosts are being marked and controlled. Things heat up when they go and ask for help from Bran’s mother’s old coven as they try to get rid of her. With all that happening Bran and Jordan are getting closer with their relationship starting. Love the world building and cannot wait to see what happens next.

This is another great addition to the series, I really enjoyed the prologue book just another day at the morgue where we first got to know Bran and Jordan, this story shows us how their relationship is changing from colleagues to friends to lovers and how together they feel stronger in this story they start to learn more about their powers and defeat some evil but that is only the beginning can’t wait to read book two to see what happens next.

First, if you have not read Valley Ghost and the Mystical Markings series, The Cemetery Tour and Just Another Day at the Morgue, please do so to give yourself a better understanding of who is who and how they are connected. I love them all, and find them totally engrossing, so reading this book is just the natural order. I found this book to be a very quick and satisfying read and as always left me anxious for the next one.

Bran & Jordan

Good story. I felt like I read this before but maybe from a different point of view, Dane & Griff maybe? Anyway, I enjoyed getting to know these two. Bran is a reluctant necromancer and Jordan a reluctant empath. Together, they help keep the evil spirits at bay, learn about their powers as they grow and get to know each other on a whole new level. I am looking forward to more from the Spirit Boys.

3.5 stars - audiobook.
Narrator - good on the whole, although Jordan's voice grated a bit and sometimes rather too upbeat in tense situations.
Story - part one of a series, but it's definitely better if the previous series has been read first. As that was a while ago for me, it did take me a little while to remember the characters well enough (except Buddy the ghost dog, who is so sweet). Interesting plot and good potential for more in the series.
