Good book. This is the continuing story of the inhabitants of the Inn at Eagle Hill and the town of Stoney Ridge. This story is mainly about Bethany and her efforts to get her life back on track. She's recovering from the discovery that the man she thought she loved was a con man, responsible for the destruction of her father's business. Her brother Tobe, who was also involved in the business is missing, and her father is dead. While waiting, not too patiently, for some idea of what her future holds, she is assisting five old ladies in cleaning out decades of accumulated stuff at their house, a truly daunting task. She's also dealing in an unexpected interest in Jimmy Fisher, local ladies' man and something of a rascal.

Jimmy, who made his own impressions in the Stoney Ridge Seasons series, was known for his ability to get into trouble. He's made some mistakes, but is working to get past them. He still has a bit of the devil in him and seems to delight in teasing Bethany. He is also very protective of her.

I enjoyed seeing their romance grow from their friendship. Bethany is wary. His reputation with the girls is of the love 'em and leave 'em variety, and she's not so sure he's serious about her. She is also reluctant to trust her own judgment, after what happened with Jake. Jimmy is amazingly patient with Bethany's roller coaster treatment of him. I loved how he was there when she needed him, even before she knew she did. It was really sweet to see the way he got involved with the community garden just because of her. When Bethany learns some disturbing news from her past, she pushes him away, trying to protect him. I ached for his hurt, and loved that he refused to be pushed too far away. I loved seeing Bethany finally see that he was the one for her.

There were many other characters that wove their way through the story, each having their own problems. One of the most interesting was Geena, a young woman who was a youth pastor at a big church. She lost her job there because she didn't fit in with their vision of where they wanted to go, leaving her floundering for her own purpose in life. She comes to the Inn to get away and think about her future, and finds an unexpected peace and purpose. I loved the way that she and Bethany connected, with each of them finding someone they can confide in. I loved Geena's way of being able to listen and open people's eyes and hearts without being judgmental. I really enjoyed how she got involved with the soup kitchen and the group home, and the effect that both had on her. I loved her ending, which was a surprise to her.

Bethany's sister Mim is amazingly level headed and empathetic for a fourteen year old. She has secretly taken on the job of an advice columnist, unknown to her mother. While she makes a few missteps, just paying attention to the people around her often gives her the insight to answer others' problems. She has some romantic troubles of her own, as she is crushing on a boy two years older. They are friends, but that friendship hits a snag at the end of the book.

There is some suspense, dealing with the fallout of the failure of the father's business. Bethany's missing brother has returned and now must face the consequences of his actions. There's some definite maturing as he realizes what he has to do. The ex-boyfriend and conman Jake also makes some appearances, showing his true colors in threats and attacks. There's one really scary scene with him, with an unexpected hero stepping in to save the day. His part isn't quite resolved, so I look forward to reading the next book.

This sequel to The Letters from The Inn at Eagle Hill series surpassed my expectations. A guest at Eagle Hill teaches Bethany how to seek direction through patience, as she waits for a call to action in her own life. Through the help of this guest Bethany finds the answer to her mother's sudden disappearance many years ago, and she grows beyond being a heartbroken young woman into one of strength as she uses opportunities to help others bring out the best in herself.

Five elderly sisters play a key role in this story. Colorful and somewhat eccentric, their actions teach Bethany much about what is important in life. Romance is knocking at Bethany's door, but a recent painful experience has left her raw and skeptical of flirtatious young men.

The Calling moves along at a fast clip leaving no room for boredom. The author is well seasoned in creating believable characters and realistic events that make this book of Amish fiction hard to put down. Mental illness is broached in this book, which is not a common topic in Amish fiction. Ghosts from the past wreak havoc when least expected, and at times I was brought to tears.

Suzanne Woods Fisher is a master at creating authentic and inspiring Amish fiction. The Amish lifestyle is well defined and substantive to their way of life. I highly recommend The Calling, and can hardly wait for the sequel. This is a bit of a cliffhanger, so prepare yourselves to be begging for more! This book can be read as a stand alone, but I suggest reading the entire series.

This is actually only the second book I've read with an Amish setting. The first one was vastly different and so I would say that this is really the first. I started it with no real expectations except hoping for a good story.

I really, really loved the characters! I loved Bethany and Jimmy, Galen and Rose, Naomi and Mim, and then all the other side characters. Bethany and Jimmy were my favorites and I loved their story the most. This was probably due to the way they interacted with each other. It did take me a few chapters before I could keep everyone straight. I would have liked to have had a few chapters of just one or two characters before I was introduced to the others, but in the end it still worked out.

The plot kind of meandered along with a few climatic moments here and there. I didn't necessarily feel a driving force in the story until about a third of the way through, but I don't know that it was really that type of story anyway. Overall it was well paced and enjoyable. There were some tough decisions that the characters needed to make.

I would recommend The Calling to those who enjoy Amish and Christian Romance with a (non-pushy) religious aspect.

It took me a little bit to get back in this story, but as I continued I was happy to be reunited with some dear friends. We are reunited with the Schrock family, among others. There is still the romance of Rose and Galen, but they are not primary this time.
We find with Bethany that some bad decisions, keep coming back to haunt her. Will she ever be free of Jake Hertzler? Some of the things that happen made me gasp...."No". We find that Jimmy Fisher is still working for Galen, but his mother wants him to take over the chicken business. Can he give up his dream of being a horse trainer. Does he have a chance with Bethany, she has sworn off men.
Then there is sweet Mem, she is still trying to be Mrs Miracle. How will that work out? These and more questions are answered in this book, but we are really left with a lot of unanswered. I can't wait for the next book, I want to know what happens.

Suzanne Woods Fisher has done it again. She has written a heartwarming story filled with characters that I have come to love. She has such a gift for writing, it makes you feel that you are actually part of the story and are actually there as everything is unfolding. The plot of this story was great. These books really aren't stand alone titles, you really need to read each book the series to fully appreciate the story. I always look forward to reading Suzanne's work because I know I will be entertained and engrossed in the story and this book was no exception. I highly recommend this series. If you haven't read it yet, it starts out with The Letters, you won't be disappointed.

Series: Book #2 in “The Inn at Eagle Hill” series {Book #1, “The Letters”, Here! and the novella, “The Rescue”, Here!} {Also, I have not read the series, but it looks like the series "Stoney Ridge Seasons" by this same author has a tie-in with this series.}

Spiritual Content- Many Prayers & Scriptures are said; Geena is a Youth Pastor & witnesses and talks about God; Naomi says that a “man is possessed” and that he casts two shadows; Talks about God & His plans for us.

Negative Content- Minor cussing including: a ‘dadgum’, a ‘crummy’, a ‘biddy’ and many ‘shootfire’s; A dog gets hit by a car and dies :( (Semi detailed).

Sexual Content- a few not-detailed kisses and two semi-detailed kisses; Love & Falling in it.

Bethany is working to clean out the house of the five sisters home so they can host church. She thought the group of sisters where just old and liked to collects things but she soon finds out there is more to them then that. She is also still getting over the man she had seen, has up and disappeared and likely helped to ruin her father’s business. Jimmy is someone she thought was immature and not worth her notice but as she gets to know him she finds herself attracted to him. While she is working to clean out the sisters home she learns they run a soup kitchen once a month and as she and more and more of her community help out each week they find themselves learning to see their neighbors in a new light.

This is book two in the series. I have not read the first book yet this book can be read as a stand alone though you will have a better idea who people are if you read the first one as this is a continuing story. The author does a decent job bring the readers up to speed from the first book.

What I liked: The author is well-known for her deeper plots and this book and series is no exception. The family is dealing with the backlash of a failed business. The father is dead and the brother has run off. There are a few characters telling this story. I like the complexity and how well the story comes together as the book progresses. I found all the characters quite likable.

What I did not like: This book is good but the plot was a little slow at times. Fishers books always have a lot going on in them and it can take a little time to get all the subplots figured out and with a few characters telling the story I don’t always feel like I get to know the main characters as well as I would like.

Overall this was a good book and I am looking forward to the third book in the series to see how it all plays out. Towards the end I found myself more interested in the next book than how this book was going to finish up. If you’re looking for a light quick read this book is not for you but if you like books with a strong story and some twists and turns than this is a good series for you. I would highly recommend going back and reading the first book though. You don’t have to but it’s the back story and I wonder had I read it first maybe this book would have been more enjoyable to me.

REVIEW
The book reunites the reader with the Schrock family and many of our other loved characters from the first book in the Inn At Eagle Hill series, THE LETTERS. Rose and Galen are still with us and in love but this time we have different characters in the forefront.
Jimmy Fisher works for Galen training horses, but his mother has different plans for him. There is a chicken business that needs tending. Will Jimmy give up his dream of horse training or will he keep doing it? He is trying to woo Bethany. He is adorable with his little winks and the endless tricks he pulls. Bethany wants nothing to do with men, period. She has some dark secrets and it concerns a man she thought loved her. Jake Hertzler continues to be in the back of her mind. He has done some terrible things that are brought to the surface as the story goes on. She can't let go of the bad decisions she has made in the past. She spends endless hours trying to make some order of the home of five elderly Amish sisters. A new guest at the inn at Eagle Hill ends up helping those that are on the down side, especially the young adults.

The Amish life is a life of simplicity and that is what the author is conveying in the book. It doesn't mean that they don't have trials and tribulations . They have hardships just like anyone else. Ms. Fisher shows that they try to make small changes in their lives without changing the way they believe. Ms. Fisher writes a wonderful and warm book that has characters that appear so real that you feel a connection with them. There are some lessons to be learned from the book. The author did a wonderful job of slipping them in without you realizing it. Will Mrs. Miracle continue to give advise secretly? Will she continue as Mrs. Miracle or will her real name come out?

I haven't read the first book in the series, but the books can be stand alones. I would suggest you read book one first so you can get some of the background on the characters. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone. It's a good, clean and warm book. So, if you like Amish reads and you want to find out about Bethany, Mrs. Miracle, Jimmy and the others, then grab a copy and follow them through their everyday simple? lives.

I would give this book 5 FLOWERS.

Title: THE CALLING

Genre: Amish

Twenty-year-old Bethany Schrock is restless. About the only thing that holds her interest is the spirited and dangerously handsome Jimmy Fisher--and he seems bent on irritating her to no end.

Bestselling author Suzanne Woods Fisher delivers her trademark twists, turns, and tender romance in this delightful and exciting visit to the deceptively quiet community of Stoney Ridge.

THE CALLING is a beautifully written story. It is the second book in The Inn of Eagle Hill series. Readers will want to read The Letters first, as the books really don’t stand alone. In fact, they may want to read The Stoney Ridge series first, as it’s a continuation.

I enjoyed getting to know Bethany better, as well as her little sister, Mim, and the neighbor girl, Naomi. It was fun discovering some of the secrets the four elderly spinster sisters were harboring. The book started out kind of exciting with Bethany making a grizzly discovery. For awhile I wondered if this would turn out to be murder mystery. But that was solved quickly. If you are looking for a good Amish book to read, pick up THE CALLING or any of Ms. Fisher’s other Amish books. An excerpt from the next book in the series is included at the end of the book as well as some delicious sounding recipes. $14.99. 336 pages. 5 stars.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

In The Calling, Bethany has a job of cleaning out the house of five sisters. It is long past time for these sisters to have church services at their place, but with all of the mess they have hoarded for so long, there is no room for all of the people. While spending time with the sisters, Bethany finds out interesting things they did with their time, helping her to understand why they didn’t take the time to clean their house.

There is a lot going on with the family Schrock family in this book. Rose the mom is still running the Inn, and still seeing Galen King, Mim the young sister is acting as Mrs. Miracle and answering letters for the newspaper, Bethany is helping the sisters, with cleaning and their other activities. And there is the Englisch friend staying at the Inn trying to find her way in life, Jimmy Fisher who is hot on Bethany, Jake Hertzler who broke Bethany’s heart and ended up being a fake, Bethany’s mom in which finally Bethany and her brother found closure because they were able to see first hand at what happened to her.

Suzanne Woods Fisher does an amazing job weaving life and its good and bad times of these characters, bringing them altogether in a story And I really enjoyed this story, and was happy to revisit the Schrock family and their friends and neighbors in this Amish community in Stoney Ridge. To find out what happened to all of the characters, I encourage you to pick up a copy of The Calling, and before you read this book, it would help to read The Letters, the first book in this series, first.

I really like this sweet read! Just like the first in the series Suzanne throws in twists after turns! The Calling is more about Bethany and what she's gonna go through. I really liked getting to know this character more and from the beginning I was hooked and shocked at what Bethany finds! :D I always loved the Jimmy Fisher/Bethany relationship and I really love all the growing these two characters go through! A lot of growing and changing comes in these pages where all of the characters are concerned actually. Mim's, Mrs. Miracle letters continue and this is really the part that left me wanting. There is one letter in particular that I wanted more from. Suzanne also adds new characters along with the old, and I love the way she blends Amish with English. The latest guest to the Inn at Eagle Hill is one that I grew to love from the very beginning! She really helps Bethany through her journey all while God leads her to find her own place and purpose. I love the awesome messages as well as the pace of the story. Surprise returns, shocking revelations, and possibly new secrets as well as answers to old ones. The Calling is a wonderful journey that I liked just as much if not more than the first! I can't wait for the next book to see where these characters lives go next!!!

Songs: "He Leadeth Me" by The Cluster Pluckers, "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" by Alan Jackson, "My God Is Real (Album Version)" Johnny Cash, and "Standing On The Promises" by Alan Jackson
Some songs may be added in time.

Psalm 27, Galatians 4:6, and Psalm 3:4

With this second installment of The Inn at Eagle Hill series we shift the focus from Rose to Bethany. The Calling takes up a couple of months after The Letters leaves off. Bethany has begun her job at the adorable Sister's House. She's trying to make a dent in the clutter but progress is very slow. In the midst of doing her job she makes a few startling discoveries. The sisters are hiding some secrets that turn Bethany's world upside down.

Then there are the issues with the two men in her life. First there is Jake Hertzler, he's her intended but there's something not quite adding up. Then there is the charming Jimmy Fisher. Bethany is definitely drawn to him, but he seems to be drawn to anything in a skirt!

With this book the author delves into a rarely seen topic in Amish fiction; mental illness. The way it is addressed is done with honesty and candor. I was pleased to read about it and thought it honored the topic.

One of my favorite scenes involved Bethany and Rusty and making bread. I can't wait for you to read it. I actually teared up because the dialog was so moving. Bethany comes a long way in this book and it is easy to relate to the struggles that she faces. Some things are universal and we see that in the contrasts between the Amish and the English in this series.

Shootfire! you're just going to love this series and especially this book.

THE CALLING by Suzanne Woods Fisher is another exciting inspirational Contemporary Amish Romance set in Eagle Hill, Stoney Ridge. #2 in "The Inn at Eagle Hill" series, and I must say, I believe you should read book 1 first, "The Letter" just to understand the characters, and storyline a bit better. Whose who better! With this said, "The Calling" touches on a very difficult topic mental Illness and how the Amish deals with this issue. Bethany is one of five sisters, she is searching for answers and looking for love. What she finds is a mystery, a secret that is shocking to say the least, scandal, healing and forgiveness. A must read for anyone who enjoys tender romances, twists and turns and the simple life of the Amish people. Who has the same hurts, and difficulties as the rest of the world. They just deal with things differently. "The Calling" will steal your heart, as the characters come to life. I love this phrase
" A girl must never chase after a boy"! A great read! Ms. Fisher is a wonderful storyteller, who describes today's issues with grace and wonder. Well done! Received for an honest review from the publisher.

Despite her “simple” life in the Amish community, Bethany has some very modern problems. A former boyfriend turns out to be a real threat to her family, her brother is tangled up in a criminal investigation, and reuniting with her mother, who disappeared without a word many years ago, is at the forefront of Bethany’s mind. With all these thoughts troubling her, she just doesn’t have time to heed the attentions of flirtatious Jimmy Fisher, a favorite among Amish young ladies, who has an impossible mother. Fisher realistically portrays the turmoil affecting Bethany. She feels overwhelmed by her circumstances and has a hard time trusting anyone after her failed romance. Meanwhile, Geena, a female youth pastor staying at the inn, is facing her own life and career crises. I loved how the two women were able to become friends despite their different backgrounds and help each other find the path that God intends for each of them. I look forward to reading more of the books in Suzanne Woods Fisher’s The Inn at Eagle Hill series!

This book is the second one in the this series. However it can be read as a stand alone novel. I have read several books by this author and liked them. While I did like this book as well. I just did not love it as much. I really wanted to love this book as the story was fun. I loved the Amish Sisters, found Jimmy charming, and Bethany to be a bit of a firecracker so with all of this you would think that I would blasted through this book but I struggled. I never found that deep, emotional connection that I was looking for with the characters. Still I do enjoy reading this author's books and will read more of her books.

The Calling, the second in the Eagle Hill Inn series, carries the reader deeper into the lives of Stoney Ridge. The characters struggle with identity, finding their purpose, and place in a caring community that has its own twists and turns. Life isn't want it seems from the outside as the guest at Eagle Hill Inn, Geena soon discovers as she becomes intertwined in the dilemmas Bethany Schrock finds herself dealing with.
I found truths to apply in my own life throughout the book. Suzanne Woods Fisher writes with strength, insight, and depth. I look forward to her next book in this series! The Letter is the first book, another enchanting read!

The calling

It is about mim that is a column called Mrs miracle where she is giving out advice. Bethany was hired to clean out Amish sisters house and finds strange things in it. Also about Jimmy that wants to work with horses but folks want him to take over their chicken farm. Bethany is searching for her mother and does discover the truth about her. Jimmy and Bethany fall in love. It took me a while to get into the book but was pretty good.

This is a truly amazing series!

I don’t want to spoil it for anyone, but let me say how sad I felt for Bethany when she finds out the truth about a part of her past. And how frightened she is… until she discovers that she’s ok.

The little touches in the book are delightful… I could imagine how frightened Bethany was when she found a trunk full of bones, but the explanation was so simple…

The addition of Geena and the teens from the group home created a bit of excitement – especially concerning Jake, who kept turning up just like a bad penny.

Suzanne is wonderful at showing how true events can affect families, and how God works in their lives, even when they can’t see Him working. There are so many little incidents that come together for good.

Please keep reading with me… the next story isn’t a paperback novel – it’s a novella in ebook format. It features Will Stoltz, son of Delia and Charles Stoltz, from the first of the series, The Letters.

This is another great book in the series. I’m really enjoying this author and I really like the characters. In this book of course we get to meet Toby and learn a little bit more of what happened with him and Jake Hertzler. We also get a little bit more insight into Bethany and of course we got to see how she and Jimmy are progressing. There are a lot of turns and interesting twists in the story that you really don’t necessarily see coming. I’m looking forward to the conclusion of this trilogy because I think there will be some very happy endings but maybe even some surprises because there are always those….

In this second book of the series, I got to know Rose and her family even better, especially Bethany. The man she thought she was going to marry was not the man she thought he was, and his actions bring grave consequences to her family. She has a decision to make, and it isn't an easy one. Through this, she befriends the new guest at her mother's B&B, a recently-fired youth pastor seeking God's will for her life. This new guest brings her lessons of faith to Bethany, and everyone around her. This is a wonderful story of how to trust God through some of the most difficult circumstances.

I really liked this book, and look forward to the conclusion of the trilogy.

One thing I noticed early on, is that Bethany spends an inordinate amount of time doing 'other stuff'. I have read a lot of Amish fiction, and it seems like the womenfolk are always busy from sunup to sundown (and longer) with cooking, cleaning, laundry, gardening, and more. They don't seem to have all the free time she has to do other stuff, even though she's part of a family of 6, along with running a guest house!

Life is Never Simple

The life of the Amish is suppose to be simple, but life was not simple for the Schrock family. A Father dead, A Stepmother trying to make ends meet with four children, A Mother in law that is very grumpy and so many questions about the family business collapsing. There are many secrets, new loves and even events of years before. Read this series, you will enjoy it.

Every time I read a story that is Amish-related I love it. Coming from an atheist that's strange I think. This is book two in a trilogy and I cannot wait to read #3. This series is about an Amish woman, Rose, who became a widow when her husband drowned. She has four children and lives with them in her mother-in-law's house. This is a feel good story even with all the down sides.

As with the first book in this series, a mystery that needed solved & more suspense to keep you want to read on.
On to the next book in this series to see what relationships work, how others change their paths in life.
