Drop. A droplet of water like rain falls on me from a shredded gutter above. A single, lonely concrete structure stands behind me and I stand in the middle it a long overgrown field and I see animals moving through the brush, wild and vital, mercury things.
Dawn is slowly encroaching upon those still sprawled across the ground, tattered remnants of clothing and haphazard tents strewn without order. There is an uncomfortable chaos here. I feel cold water running down my spine, but when I reach over my shoulder there is nothing there, and a voice whispers across the back of my neck.
The moment skips like static and blurs. People sitting stand. People standing sit. Children jump from place to place, featureless and silent. I watch as the weeds jerk left, right, left, right with no movement between.
I had to flip back pages at first thinking my reader started me on the wrong page! It didn't this story just jumps you right in.
I thought it was a neat story, though I am not certain I understand all that happened. I am sure that is my inability to grasp the nuances.
It is a apocalyptic type story. But there is none of the usual running and fighting. It is worth your time to read!
i would go into more detail, but as it is a short story I have no idea how to do that without either not doing it justice or just ruining it for other readers. So give it a shot!
