Seeing Jesus in the Old Testament #2

The Lamb of God: Seeing Jesus in Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy

Rate this book

“For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me.”
(John 5:46)

Jesus's declaration frames this study of four books of the Pentateuch—Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy—as we discover the many ways that Moses wrote about Christ. Seasoned Bible teacher Nancy Guthrie shows that the Bible's story from beginning to end is the story of the Lamb—the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

Over ten weeks of guided personal bible study, relevant teaching, and group discussion, you will see the person and work of Christ:

in the person of Moses as a great deliverer, mediator, and prophet;
in the manna, the water from the rock, and the bronze serpent on the pole;
and in the priesthood, tabernacle, and sacrificial system.

Gain a fresh perspective on the story of Israel's deliverance and journey, a broader understanding of Jesus as the fulfillment of Scripture, and much more, when you join with Nancy on this incredible journey to see Jesus in the Old Testament!

* A leader's guide is available as a free download at SeeingJesusInTheOldTestament.com and a supplemental DVD of Nancy’s teaching is also available for purchase.

I give 4 stars to the first two-thirds of this book, but 3 stars to the last third of the book.

Why: I found the chapters on Exodus and Leviticus to be helpful, thorough and fascinating (which took up most of the book) but the chapters on Numbers and Deuteronomy to be rushed and underdeveloped. This study tried to cover too much at once I think, which is part of why it took me so long to complete it. However, I still recommend it as a resource overall and would reference the Exodus and Leviticus chapters again.

Really liked this format for a Bible study book: personal study questions, mid-length teaching chapter, and group discussion questions. Homework per chapter took about an hour and a half maximum. Content was fascinating, examining how Christ can be seen in the Old Testament books seen in the title - several new ideas for me, even as a member of a covenant theology denomination where I feel this is talked about more often than in the general evangelical community. Content was appropriate for men, women, or a combined group. Leadership of the discussion group involved very little preparation outside the materials included within the book.

Note: The content of the book assumes readers have a basic knowledge of the books of the Bible and have read or learned about much of the Bible/Biblical history before. A group of new converts would find this book challenging. (The group I lead had mostly Christians of 10+ years so it was a great study book with new ideas for all of us beyond the basics.)

While not as strong as the Gensis book in this series, this was still a fantastic accompaniment with reading the Pentateuch!

Exodus by far takes up the bulk of the study, but the content skips portions of the Book and more time is devoted to certain sections even among those covered. The Leviticus content in particular I found very well done and beneficial, with Numbers and Deuteronomy lacking in comparison (but still edifiying). Great connections were made between the Old and New Testaments throughout the study; which made reading some of the denser, detail oriented sections about the tabernacle, temple, and priesthood more engaging by connecting them to Jesus

Nancy always brings out biblical truth I hadn’t thought of before! This book attempts to overview Exodus - Deuteronomy. I wish there was more about Deuteronomy… it seemed like we were flying so high over the themes and books that there wasn’t much opportunity to interact with them, say, like in a Jen Wilkin study where you repetitively read the same passages for depth.

The Old Testament is so rich!! Gained a new perspective on Israel’s journey, seeing Jesus in the person of Moses as a great deliver/mediator, and how Jesus is the ultimate fulfillment of the scriptures! Everything points to Him!

I love Nancy Guthrie and I love her passion for biblical literacy. But I wonder if she might have just been a bit too ambitious here. This study guide does a good job of tracing out the broad themes of these books of the Pentateuch, and showing us how Christ is prefigured in many ways in the Israelites' rescue, journey and entrance into the Promised Land. The 'Teaching Chapters' of the book were helpful, clear and well-researched.

However, I think the book is difficult to use. It's suggested that you read each book of the Bible independently, studying it yourself, before reading the Teaching Chapter, and meeting with others to discuss what you have read. It didn't provide enough material to be used as an accompaniment to personal devotions, and I think a group of busy women might also struggle to speedily work their way through these hefty Bible books in order to meet up and chat about them. I am to be proved wrong on that, though. The study questions provided, in trying to provide a broad-brushstrokes view of each book, end up skipping whole chapters of text, leaving me feeling like my fingers were just slipping off the edges of each book, without really having been able to grasp some of the meat of what was going on. Though perhaps I'm looking for a deeper expositional kind of guide, which this does not claim to be.

Overall: I applaud Nancy for her ambition, and for her excellent work in distilling the key themes of these books into a manageable guide. I probably will dip back into it if I am preparing something on themes of OT sacrifice/law etc., but sadly I wouldn't be jumping to recommend it to lots of people I know.

Nancy Guthrie presents truths in Scripture in an easy-to-understand manner. Jesus is not only presented in the New Testament. From Genesis to Revelation, He is revealed in Scripture, and I have found the obviousness of this in the OT to be amazing! The chapters are gripping, and watching the companion video is riveting. Questions at the end of each chapter challenge the reader to dig deeper and really understand God's Truth clearly and concisely. This is the best Bible study I've done to date. It's deep and meaty and life changing. I'm looking forward to going back and doing the first book on Genesis.

Last year, I reviewed "The Promised One," a Bible study about seeing Jesus in Genesis by Nancy Guthrie. Since August, our ladies' group at church has been doing a study by the same author called "The Lamb of God, Seeing Jesus in Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy." We met twice a month since August, doing one of the ten chapters each time.

After having read her book on Genesis, I was curious to see how Guthrie would fit the next four books into one study. It turns out that the first seven chapters are all on Exodus. Despite starting the next chapters with verbiage stating that many consider Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy boring, Guthrie seems to confirm that idea by giving each of them just a single chapter and focusing those on just a few narrative chapters within each, mostly ignoring the more mundane parts.

Some things I found interesting in the commentary and marked:

* Guthrie says that rather than Moses meaning "drawn out of the water," it actually means "he who draws out of" and makes the connection of Moses drawing the Israelites out of Egypt.

* The prophecy "out of Egypt I called my son" was interesting, considering that could refer both to Egypt (who fled Egypt with his parents as a baby) and the Israelites (who fled Egypt with Moses).

* Guthrie makes the point that we may feel it was harsh of God to kill the Egyptian first-borns, but to consider that God also killed his own first-born in Jesus.

* I liked the point about the Israelites being told to "fear not, stand firm, and watch God's salvation," yet they still had to take action by stepping into the Red Sea before it parted. Those steps were not "accomplishing their own salvation" but showed them responding in faith to God's words.

* Guthrie made an interesting observation by saying that the 10 commandments were written in stone, indicating their timeless nature. But the Book of the Covenant was written on parchment, implying that it didn't have the same eternal force, but was only necessary prior to Jesus's sacrifice.

* "There is no love for Jesus apart from keeping his commandments ... the way God intends for us to enjoy communion with him is by keeping his commands."

* The system of animal sacrifice "was not plan A that didn't work. They served their function, which was to serve as a symbol of the sacrifice God would accept; the sacrifices were not the reality of it. And once the reality came, there was absolutely no further need for the symbol."

* "Will I spend my life learning all that God wants to teach me about his provision, his holiness, and his ways here in the wilderness of this world, knowing that he is preparing me for life in his presence? Or will I spend these years called 'my lifetime' simply seeking satisfaction for my cravings, grumbling, and complaining when I do not get everything he has promised here and now?"

* Regarding the Israelites grumbling about their daily ration of manna: "What they perceived as lack was actually a gift that would help them come to terms with their need for God and his provision."

There were insights in this study that I found helpful. I have to say though that since doing some Jen Wilkin studies, others seem to pale for me. I loved Jen's combo of individual study, small group discussion, and video of her speaking on each chapter. This study was fine for Exodus, but you're not going to get much out of it on the other three Biblical books it purports to cover.

Our Bible study group loved this, the second volume in Nancy Guthrie's "Seeing Jesus in the OT" series.
This Christ-centered study took us from Egyptian slavery in Exodus to the recounting and retelling of all that God had done for His people, Israel, in the book of Deuteronomy.
The study is user-friendly and Biblically reliable. Nancy uses resources and cites accurately from a wealth of sound scholarly works. Her chapters are not primarily about "How does this passage relate to me and my life?" But, her foundational objective is that the reader might see and know Jesus better. The Old Testament books are not narratives about Bible heroes, but about fellow fallen sinners who desperately need a Savior. The study of the wilderness Tabernacle and Priesthood in Leviticus all point to the sacrificial Lamb of God who would one day become incarnate, live a perfectly spotless life, die and be resurrection for all who believe.
Several women mentioned that they will never read Scripture the same. This study helped them better see the story of redemption as told in the Old Testament.
I highly recommend Volume Two of this series!

I didn’t read all of it, but maybe about half. And finishing it with a group of ladies from church, so it counts to me.
Anyways, I learned SO MUCH from this study! I was blown away by the biblical insights and applications Nancy Guthrie had in each section. Truly an incredible study, and I am grateful for her wisdom, knowledge, and the writing of this study. I learned a lot on how to read my bible and think biblically theologically. Can’t say enough good things about it! But, I will say I almost gave this a 4/5 simply because she wrote this as a Presbyterian and therefore there were things I definitely disagreed with. Such as: the role of the law under the New Covenant which was a big part of one of the chapters in the book. Also her views on salvation as it pertains to our children and coming generations. But if you’re a baptist and have a good foundation and convictions for your theology, you can use discernment and gain a ton out of this book as I did too! I wouldn’t deter someone from reading it because of that, but I think it is helpful to note if it might confuse younger in the faith Christians. Seriously sooo well done and eager to read more from her.

Just finished this study that is a continuation of The Promised One. Where the Promised One takes you through the book of Genesis, The Lamb of God goes through Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. I have study Exodus before but not really the other three. I've attempted to read them of course, but would typically get lost in the sacrifice rituals and cleanliness rules and lose my motivation. Nancy Guthrie does a great job of explaining the greater purpose of the laws described in these books and how they point to and show our need for Christ. I previously found reading these books tedious, but this study of them was fascinating.

The second Bible study I've done with church friends in this series. Exceptional teaching with new insights and clear presentation. Good questions to research and great discussion points.

* We are accountable to God, but He is not accountable to us.
* The civil law expired because the people of God are no longer a national entity.
* We can pursue the Ten Commandments not because we have to but because we get to.
* We know that God always provides for us what he requires of us.

I have never completed such a rich group Bible study as I was able to with Guthrie's The Lamb Of God. In it, she offers a wealth of historical information and commentary on each weeks reading in the old testament as well as their connections to the new testament. It was a truly lovely experience to see and understand how my Savior was spoken of all throughout the books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. I will continue to complete Guthrie's other studies as well.

I cannot recommend this series enough. It helps connect the story of the gospel throughout the books of the Old Testament. Completing this study has strengthened my faith in God’s word and has encouraged me to live in light of the freedom of the gospel. This book continuously pointed out that Jesus is the perfect lamb of God who accomplished what I could never do to bring me into right relationship with God. I’m so thankful to have done this study.

I loved this Bible study. The depth of this study was wonderful; I feel like I understand the book of Exodus, especially through the lens of Christ's future work, so much more fully than before. The last three chapters, which covered Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy, weren't my favorite, but studying the book of Exodus for the first 7 weeks with Nancy Guthrie's skillful guiding was a feast for my heart and mind.

Great content overall, but lacking in 2 areas:
1. Nancy is all about how the OT points to Christ, which is wonderful. However, she fails to talk about how Christ was truly and substantively present to the OT saints through the means of grace (ex. the sacrificial system). The book is Christo-telic, but not as much Christo-centric.
2. Exodus was covered in great depth, whereas Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy were each only given 1 chapter. The content was good, but I would have liked more.

Fabulous study! Learning to see Jesus in the Old Testament is amazing! I am going to go back and do the Genesis study, as I skipped over it! Looking forward to continuing on in the series! Jesus is our perfect sacrifice who paid the sin debt for all people for all time... ONCE! He is my God and my King!

Excellent study on seeing Jesus in all the books we like to avoid — Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. Nancy Guthrie is an excellent Bible teacher and writer and makes hard things understandable. This is book 2 of a 5-book study series. Strongly recommend. And it encourages me to go back to book 1, seeing Jesus in Genesis.

Guthrie is a great Bible teacher and has helped cultivate in me a deeper appreciation for these books of Scripture, especially Leviticus, which can seem tedious with a simple surface-level peruse. I highly recommend her studies and am looking forward to delving into more of them.

Great Study on Christ in the OT

Nancy Guthrie’s study of Christ in the OT will help you better understand the meaning and significance of Christ’s life, death, burial, and resurrection. This is a book I will reference in the future and will return to more than once.
