Opening the Libro de Mormon, I had no idea what to expect. What I found, was odd to me; the first book sounds kind of like the Old Testament, but much more verbose, and more focused on a specific narrative. I was also very surprised by how Nefi does not bother to explain his bloodline, except to make it very clear that he's descended from José--and, quite neatly it seems, the narrative of Nefi's life makes obvious parallels to the life of José. In the Old Testament, detailing bloodlines was very important, and done often. I was also surprised by the book's opening with a personal narrative, rather than a general glorification of God, and a reflection of beginnings, like in the Bible, or in the Libro de Enoc. Perhaps I'll enjoy the book more as I go into it. But these are first impressions, and my initial surprise. The book I have also has glossy pictures of Jesus, with very Europid features...I'm not sure yet, whether this image of Jesus is somehow critical to the book.
