Skyscraper and Sewers, Space Stations and Battle Fields, High Finance and Low Tricks!
Resolving disputes on Debrides is easy, and Jake Ambler (still weak from his bout of foulbrood) finds himself enjoying flying around the planet and resolving disputes among the Coleons, creatures of astonishing variety in terms of size, shape and ability.
Debrides is the home of The Exchange, the hub of all financial activity in Bug Space, so critical to the viability of exopreneurial activity in the area that not even the ruthless Corporate would dare try to corrupt it. The staid Coleons devotion to everything they do is so thorough, nothing ever goes wrong. Even their wars are tightly scheduled!
An Explosion, A Little War, An Unbalanced Ledger
An explosion or two in a sewer, a battle going on too long, occasional errors in The Exchange, and Jake is in the middle of it all.
So much so that the newly formed Exopreneur League becomes suspicious. As do the Coleons. As friends turn their back on him, and loved ones are imperiled, Jake finds himself alone and becoming the Most Hated Man In the Universe.
The Wingless
The key to the riddle may be the mysterious cult known as The Wingless, an organization whose beliefs and objects are not known, but which has a reach beyond the stars.
Jake must risk everything to unravel the mystery before The Exchange collapses and throws the galaxy into chaos and war!
Jake Ambler has a new assignment in Bug Space, the planet Debrides, a world populated by sapient beetle analogues. The locals, Coleons, have a type of hyper-OCD and simply live to work and money provides little motivation. There are no racial prejudices; humans are just a different sort of Coleon. So why is Jake fighting for his life? An ancient enemy has Jake in his sights and it will stop at nothing to ruin Jake's life and everyone he holds dear.
Wingless had me staying up, reading until 2am, giving it 4 stars.
Blake is great at inventing unique alien species and fascinating alien societies. Add plenty of action, a great protagonist, and plenty of interesting side characters and you've got a must read for science fiction fans.
Exopreneurs is easily among my favorite sci fi series. I read Wingless in KU then bought it to write my review, because I would happily pay more for these awesome books. Wingless has a little romance, some danger (ok, it's Jake, so a lot of danger), a lot of adventures, a few reunions (not all good ones), and a lot of new, interesting, likeable non-humans of the beetle variety. Jake is dealing with the fallout from his choices in Foul Brood; I admit I felt sorry for him. There is some laugh-out-loud humor, but bad things happen. I will reread these books many times; the stories are just that good, and I really love Jake.
