Shuzo Oshimi (押見修造, Oshimi Shūzō) is a Japanese manga creator. Drawn in a realistic art style, his comics tend to be psychological dramas exploring the difficulties in human relationships and often touching on disturbing situations and perversions. Oshimi debuted in 2001 with the manga series Avant-Garde Yumeko, appeared in Kodansha's 'Monthly Shōnen Magazine.' Most of his works since then have been published by Kodansha and Futabasha. Among his first successes the single volume manga Sweet Poolside (2004), later adapted into a live-action film, and the series Drifting Net Café (2008–2011), also adapted for TV. Oshimi reached international acclaims with The Flowers of Evil (2009–2014) and Inside Mari (2012–2016), both adapted into successful anime. Other notable works are Blood on the Tracks (2017–2023) and Welcome Back, Alice (2020-2023) .
The conclusion of Volume 4 raises the possibility that a love triangle between Saeki, Nakamura, and Kasuga is developing. Normally, this is a plot device that makes me grind my teeth in rage, but because these three have had so much exposure to one another's inner workings, it feels more natural than your typical harem nonsense. With how inventive and entertaining Flowers of Evil has made the high school-themed romantic comedy, I'm itching to read more, and you should too
I don't think I've ever read something as vile, something as corrupted like this in my entire life... But this series just messes up with the mind. It felt like a breath-taking surface of the sea inviting you in... and you diving on ocean-deep water without oxygen tank or any swimming ensemble. Just you're just bare, drowning and suffocating, the water embracing you aggressively. I just feel sick, so I'm just gonna go sleep quietly over there. Adios.
At the end of volume 3, Nakamura and Kasuga have attempted to flee their boring little mountain town for the "other side". His parents know what he did. Saeki follows them in an attempt to win back Kasuga's heart and Kasuga finds himself unable to let Nakamura leave without him, causing Saeki to realise that Kasuga isn't truly hers. Volume 4 starts a month after, with everyone talking about how Kasuga and the girls were all found by the police, with none of them seemingly talking to one another anymore. Kinoshita confronts Kasuga and he and Saeki "break up". This is seemingly for the best seeing as he's still obsessed with Nakamura, who basically tells him to work for her attention. He isolates himself, obsessing over Nakamura. He wants to find a hidden sanctuary where they can be perverts together, but Saeki can't let it lie either, and is upset she's being left behind in their plans.
This series is just getting more and more unhinged with no foreseeable conclusion on the horizon. I wonder where they can really go with 7 more volumes still to read. The story seems like it will either end with them dying or with someone else taking over the story. The tension is just bubbling under the surface and I wonder when it's going to break.
Having a tough time time getting a read on the boy. Is he really a "pervert" or is he drawn to nakamura because he thinks that's what he deserves? There does seem to be a genuine attachment growing between them , but it's still pretty messed up. Also, muse girl confesses to her friend, and so the plot thickens.
Things sure are getting weird. The story wasn’t quite as dark or dramatic as the last few volumes have been, but the protagonist has finally fully embraced his perverted side and is looking forward to getting in trouble with Nanako. I think things are about to be taken up a notch.
Voy a leer el siguiente volumen solamente para estar al día con el deadline del manga del club de discord, pero creo que después de ese lo voy a droppear porque ésta definitivamente no es la historia para mi.
Quite a bit went down in the lives of our central characters over the course of the first three volumes of Shuzo Oshimi’s The Flowers of Evil, and when it all wrapped up it kind of felt like we might be right back where we started. Well, volume four is here to let us know that isn’t the case at all, and this collection of chapters represents a major shift in the story’s direction.
At this point, Takao Kasuga has rejected his bookworming ways. He’s gone full-on recluse at home, and he’s more or less turned his back on his school crush, Nanako Saeki. He projects a palpable emptiness, and it’s clear that the only thing left that could be classified as remotely fulfilling resides in the ever bizarre and rebellious Sawa Nakamura.
Nakamura spent the last three volumes torturing Kasuga in a way that gradually became endearing. She is wholly responsible for the person he’s become; outed as a “pervert’ when a simple, impulsive mistake attached itself like a insatiable parasite. Now she’s just disappointed in Kasuga. He didn’t provide the escape from this “shit-bug town” she desired, and so he doesn’t amount to much more than anyone else in their class. Once Kasuga realizes the void within him is directly related to Nakamura, he goes out of his way to prove himself to her, thus flipping their dynamic while keeping Nakamura firmly in power.
Flowers of Evil is more interesting than ever in this volume. It isn’t a graphic series by any means, but it comes across as such due to how psychologically bent it can be at times. Oshimi’s art has always been a pleasant and strong factor, and it’s only improved as the manga has progressed. A bonus in the back of the volume shows off even more of the real world locations referenced in The Flowers of Evil, each of which gives the story a bit more of a grounded, concrete feel. Not to say what happens within is terribly outlandish, but the characters and their situations really pop when put in true-to-life spots like that.
Finally getting some improvement with this series. Kasuga doesn't make me want to break things anymore and it's actually getting a little interesting. Now I'm actually looking forward to seeing what happens next
Seems edgy at first, but it appears aligned to the main subject of the manga itself.
Baudelaire's Flowers of Evil attempts to extract beauty from the malignant Naturally, Oshimi tried to announce this in a similar way for the younger demographic, though still apealling to its mature and juvenile themes. The story proposes the inner conflict between Kasuga and the other two, one that arose after Nakamura corrupts his life through her, toying his relationship with Saeki, his so-called "Muse and Femme-Fatale". Through the 4 Volumes this manga offers, readers are meant to endure a lot of deviant actions between the three, be it one instilled by Nakamura, or one simply hidden through Kasuga's psyche.
The erotic, vile, and perverted air that imbues the atmosphere of the story is what makes this comic great, it's easy to make use of the word "corny", but stretch it far enough and you'll see what it means.
The book gives you the generic story of the reluctant hero, meeting the same fate at almost every other similar story. Retribution, or atonement you might say. The ending's quite similar to Yokota's Onanie Master Kurosawa, though not as brutal and serious. This manga offers a good read for those who just want to appear like Kasuga in the book, or one who would very much like to dissect it.
It is a pure type of degeneracy, where kids are, at most, childish and uncaring for their actions.
I can't quite grasp what is even the premise of the story. I feel like i understand it but it comes off kind of pointless. It's a horror story that has thus far introduced our mc and we're watching his gradual descent into evil as he commits more and more heinous deeds all to appease a rotten girl with a heart so foul and wicked. I guess to me, i don't understand why he would ever begin to accomodate and rely on her in the first place (though i get the blackmail), when there were so many other obvious choices to make. Idk why im complaining anyways it just seems silly. Maybe it is simply the blooming soul of an adolescent teen that drives the irrationality of the story. It's been quite unexpected so far, plot lines arent predictable and the whatever happens is.. whatever happens i guess.
Everything kind of built up into the toxic, vile relationship between the two, and he now seems so engrossed in appeasing her that he would involve and torment the angel he loved for the sake of it. He's also growing to be a total degenerate sub. I suppose thats what makes the novel truly evil.
How far can an individual go to be accepted by someone? That someone doesn't necessarily be good and in this story it's definitely like this.
With this fourth volume there is a new twist in the main story. We finally understand why Kasuga is acting like that and what is actually going on in his head (at least partially). I think that from now on we will see his descent to the "dark side" and hopefully we will see some consequences as well of all his actions.
It's definitely not easy to get into this story, because it's easier to wait for good things to happen or for the character to evolve in a good way, but with this story it'a all the contrary. In here things go all wrong but becasue for the eyes of Kasuga it's the right thing to do.
The primary focus of this volume of Flowers of Evil is on Kasuga’s efforts to figure out how he can go back to being by Nakamura’s side. He thinks the best way to do that is by proving he really is a “pervert,” and not just another boring “shitbug” who doesn’t deserve any attention from the class bully (Nakamura). Despite the psychological torment and physical humiliation she inflicts on him, Kasuga starts to develop feelings for her, though not in a traditionally romantic way. Shuzo Oshimi deserves credit for portraying the complexities of Stockholm Syndrome, with Kasuga slowly empathizing with his abuser; but the tale is beginning to lose its edge now.
This one has a lot of build up and it's actually a satisfying conclusion. The main characters have a pretty kinky relationship. It's interesting to see nakamuas home life isn't an explanation for her rudeness and antisocial behavior. This allows her character to remain a mystery
Bufff aquest complex d'inferioritat i aquesta atracció per la gent que està malament, que necessita ajuda, és mooooolt perillós i més encara quan es tracta d'adolescents. Quins calfreds, això "del otro lado" i .
I read the first 3 volumes in a collection a while back and read this fourth volume to see if I was interested in continuing the series, but I think I’ll drop it here. I found this manga-ka fascinating at first, but I think I’ve lost interest in following their work at this point.
The artwork in this volume is a DRAMATIC improvement, allowing for the dark tone of the story to finally come through seamlessly. The art has always been great, don’t get me wrong, but certain “lighting” choices and facial expressions really stand out in this one.
This was so buns. I can not stand any of the characters they are so corny I especially hate the main character because he is so whiny I can’t stand him. The story is fine so far I guess it kind of feels like it’s going nowhere I hope it will get better
