Jeffrey Mishlove was the first student at the University of California, Berkeley, (or at any accredited university in the U.S.) to create an interdisciplinary, doctoral major in parapsychology. His best known work, The Roots of Consciousness, served as partial fulfillment of his examination requirements.

"Se não pode ser, então não é" é uma falácia argumentativa baseada em ignorância, pois para saber o que pode ou não pode ser, é necessário um conhecimento absoluto das coisas.
Beyond the Brain do Jeffrey Mishlove é o vencedor do BICS Life After Death Essay Contest, e por isso, supostamente seria o texto com melhor corpo de evidências e argumentos sobre algo análogo a "vida após a morte". Com isso em mente, fui ler com uma mente aberta, mas cética.
O livro conta com estudos de 9 categorias de "evidências" que apontam para essa conclusão, além de 2 linhas de interpretação alternativas para essas evidências que não levam a essa conclusão.
Algumas "evidências", como os milhares de casos catalogados de reencarnação com memórias de vidas anteriores, são predominantes em certas culturas, onde tanto o morto como o vivo são de culturas onde acredita-se em reencarnação. Outros corpos de evidência são mais comuns em culturas ocidentais, e essa variação de fenômenos se apresentando de forma diferente de acordo com a cultura e ontologia do morto e do contexto montam uma imagem muito mais complexa desse fenomeno do que eu imaginava anteriormente.
Definitivamente muito interessante, e realmente algumas das "provas" apresentadas são bem convincentes, mas não vou dizer que o texto me convenceu por si só, afinal todas as evidências (mesmo que um grande volume, e algumas muito bem documentadas) são circunstanciais e passíveis de fraude.
O mais interessante de todo o corpo apresentado é a categoria de evidências em "Instrumental Trans Communication", que é o único que apresenta um conjunto de experimentos replicáveis, e por sinal possui um corpo de evidência bem forte.
No geral gostei da leitura e principalmente gostei da formatação, onde hiperlinks de entrevistas e evidências são tão bem distribuídos pelo texto que parece até uma página da wikipédia com vídeos sobre cada afirmação. Acredito que esse é um dos tópicos onde "fé" é muito importante, e caso não tenha fé, as evidências apresentadas pouco adiantam. Apesar disso, o livro apresenta os meios pelo qual indivíduos podem buscar gerar esse corpo de evidências para se convencerem disso (por meio de mediunidade e transcomunicação instrumental), e dou vários pontos ao livro por isso.
Enfim, leitura legal, não me convenceu totalmente mas definitivamente enriqueceu meu entendimento sobre o tópico e apresentou alguns casos bem interessantes.

I reviewed the basic history of the BIOS project and mentioned Dr Mishlove as the first Berkeley doctorate in the realm of parapsychology. This is an academic effort that reads well for the non academic explaining the science of consciousness’ continuation. Highly recommended for any seeker of the answers to the ultimate puzzle for mankind. The materialists loose in this wonderful education regarding evidence as to our consciousness surviving clinical death. We can better understand the view of those who imbue our multiverse with an inherent energy manifested in part as consciousness. The panpsychists win in the notion that from the quantum the interstellar there is life in the form of consciousness. Read this book for the supporting evidence and scientific method validating NDE case studies and beyond. Whether or not you are predisposed to materialism or in between you will have an opportunity to critically evaluate your beliefs. The quest for knowledge is furthered for all by the work of Dr Mishlove.

Comprehensive but Sketchy

Although the topic is covered from many, many perspectives and phenomena I can’t help but think of much of the evidence as hearsay that was reported decades and even over a century ago, especially the review of mediumships. There are simply too many fraudulent people claiming to be mediums that have been shown to be frauds to make this believable. I accept the information on NDEs and reincarnation as genuine and believable, however, having studied those topics through many sources. Honestly, I also read Pim van Lommel’s essay as part of this essay contest and I found his data much more credible given his background as a cardiologist and having studied his patients first hand. In my opinion he should have won this essay based on its credibility alone.

A well capsulated argument for the afterlife

I appreciated the case examples, which in some other books are only briefly mentioned. This book helped me see the forest through the trees.
