As the head of Queen Rachel of New York’s detail, Terry’s job is to guarantee her safety and security. Being kidnapped hadn’t been part of his plans or his schedule, but upon discovery that Princess Olivia of Montana requires immediate surgery to be able to breathe, his job takes an unusual and unsettling turn.
With the life of his best friend at stake, he will do anything required to get her through the upcoming days, including sacrifice his heart.
Susan Copperfield is the royal romance, urban fantasy loving alter ego of award-winning & USA Today bestselling novelist R.J. Blain.
Under the super not-so-secret identity of Susan, the Royal States of America is explored, where the work of sixteen founding royal families preserved the United States from destruction and civil war when magic swept over the world.
In the Royal States, life, love, and magic always finds a way.
Beyond happy with the story of Terry and Olivia. I can't wait to find the time to read it again.
Initially read parts on patreon as a work in progress read along. Those early chapters were compelling, and the completed book is fantastic.
I've been waiting for The Rat Guy's story since Cold Flame and the author more than delivered.
I love visiting this world. Characters from Texas, Montana, New York, Maine and California make an appearance as do some new faces.
The plot is fun and I really enjoy catching up with everyone's news.
And the cover, as always, is great. Terry is definitely heading into Silver Fox territory.
Escape from our reality for a bit and read about a world where magic and determined characters are working to create a better future for all. And often having a good time along the way.
As this was not purchased at a certain retailer, it has the bonus story which is also awesome.
Gotta go I feel the need to start re-reading Bonds, Cold Flame, Runaway, Vampire of Montana then Iron Unicorn. Who am I kidding, probably starting with Storm Called.
So much happened!! I really loved everything about this book!!
There were a lot of laughs, a lot of things learned, a few tears and a whole lot of action!! I keep saying I love Susan Copperfield's (R.J. Blain) Royal States world and I'm really happy with every book that's been released, but with every new release, it just gets better!! So many things happened that I've never read in another book. One of the things I love about this author is that so many things are so damned original!! Now I'll be waiting with baited breath until the Prince of New York is released :-) Well, I'll be re-reading this series (listening to the audiobooks that have been released) and looking forward to the next book in this series!!
Wonderful! I liked Terry from the first moment he cajoled Rachel into speaking with him (Cold Flame by Susan Copperfield) and thereafter became her steadfast champion. This book, written from Terry's viewpoint, fleshes out his background and personality beautifully. His compassion for even the smallest creatures is incredible, and he hides a tender heart beneath his ruggedly capable tough-guy royal bodyguard front. Emotionally satisfying, with plenty of schemes, scenarios, and favorite characters from the rest of the series playing their parts in providing not only Terry but also several others the happy resolutions they deserve.
Another eeny meany on the rating between 2 and 3 stars. There were bits I liked, the crab torture. Terry was an entertaining character, but ultimately it did fall back onto another horse essay, and the way being paved for Eddie. The story lost me from the horses to the talent evaluation.

Great characters. Could not put down the book until finished. Will not say more because do not want spoil your reading pleasure with give aways of what happens next.
These books are set in the Royal.States universe and are focused.oh the Royal Protection Officers. We have met all the characters before in the Royal States books and this is where the timeline confusion occurs (for me) the last Royal States book was the Trickster King and in that King Patrick goes on a trip around Texas and takes his adopted son Eddie with him. Eddie is somewhere between 10 and 15 in this book. Eddie, Patrick and Jessica (his wife) are also in this book but Eddie is now an adult and an R.P.S agent. Time flies. Also the heroine.if the.story Olivia is.the older sister of the King of Montana, who by this point must be at least fifty get when discussing Olivia getting married there is talk.of her having possibly six children......... Really........... But these are just small gripes and I think the jump in time.is to prepare us for Eddie's book when he finally gets to bond with his own princess......................... Olivia and Terry are fun characters especially as Olivia acts so much younger than her actual age......................
The last two have been a little horse heavy, romance light. I feel like I've taken a class in horse genetics and care. Like a chapter of actual romance. Still funny though if you can stay awake through the 15 chapter of horse explanation. I love pat he's my favorite character of the series I just wish we had more character based conversation.
2024 bk 44. I had been waiting for this book to appear on my Kindle. When it arrived, well, I had to read the 1st of the Agents of the Royal States #1 all over again first. Finishing that at 10:00 p.m. I thought to myself, I'll just start Iron Unicorn. (Can you hear the maniacle laughter on the part of the author?) There was no stopping place, next thing I knew it was 4:25 a.m. - yep I had read right through most of the night and I still wasn't done - but my eyes were. So I went to sleep, making sure to mark my page. Thankfully there were no appointments the next morning. When I woke up at 9:00, I ignored all the things I normally do in the morning to roll over and continue reading. Finished about noon. Is this book good - YES. It kept me engaged and I was delighted to hear more from Terry and Olivia and the other madcap royals of Susan Copperfield's universe. I do recommend reading the other books in the universes (Royal States and this series) so that you will have a fuller understanding of the universe and events.
This series is about an alternate universe where magic hits the United States, which causes a second civil war. The most powerful families become kings and queens of the new era and create a new United States. The RPS or Royal protection service protects the monarchs. This is a feel-good slow burn romance with lots of animals, including horses and crustaceans, and princess in need of love, and an overworked RPS agent. I love both the humor and heart in this series and I will definitely be the next one.
Whenever I read one of this series, it makes me want another one. Either a new story or to reread the old stories.
The Royal States books are always on my tbr pile and I haven’t ever been disappointed. I would recommend all of Susan Copperfield books and RJ Blain, while you are there.
Terry and Olivia’s story went in unexpected ways, which is to be expected with the Royal States. Loved it, loved it, loved it.
Susan Copperfield did it again! iron Unicorn was a good book to read and it was nice to get to see old 'friends' , chactors from past books. I truly enjoy reading this author's books because there is a story, one you don't have to read through a bunch of garbage to get to the story and that you don't have to wade through a bunch of sex to get to the story. Great story and wonderful book! Thank you for several enjoyable hours of entertainment !
Really good. Love Terry and Olivia's romance. Especially like the horses as a part of the story. My only complaint is while the banter is very amusing it sometimes goes on for far too long and things get repeated sometimes 3 or 4 times and I just wish everybody would get on with the story and do something.
I admit to liking bodyguard-protectee romances, and the author gives us yet another wacky and off-the-wall yet plausible romance which incorporates social justice issues, snark, gentle friendship and much mayhem. I do not know how the author manages to make kidnapping and runaways fun and bouncy; I only know that she does and I love it. Maybe it was the squirrel ....
This book is 400+ pages long in my Kindle. I would rot object if the length was 900 pages or many more. The characters are delightful, and Terry is a keeper of the first level, the fierce lion standing atop the pyramid. I am off now to read the original series.
The entire Royal States series is amazing. Wonderfully written, highly entertaining & very enjoyable to read. I've re-read the entire series 6 times now & each time I find things I missed the first read. RJ Blain (& all of her aliases) is an outstanding writer & I highly recommend all of her books.
These books are overlong, very similar to each other and nothing of note really happens but I occasionally kind of enjoy meandering through the lives of a bunch of unstable magical royal families obsessed with horses, friendly kidnappings and meddling in each other's love lives in overly complicated and unnecessary ways.
This is another visit to the Royal States and we get to see, hear meet, and visit with those wonderful characters we love. I will read and reread this book multiple times. Thank you for a great story.
Once again Susan Copperfield has surpassed expectations. Fantastic story with the usual wonderful characters, from previous stories. I loved getting a bit of backstory on Olivia and Terry. Can't wait to read more.
As a fan of all the books in the Royal States series, I also like the Agents of the Royal States. Very interesting characters and lots of humor. To date I have read every book in both series and eagerly wait for more
I absolutely love each book of yours that I read! These is love, laughter, and family. Please know, MS Copperfield, your hard work is appreciated! Thank you so very much!!!
I always enjoy Susan Copperfield's books and this one does not disappoint. Her ability to interweave humor, sorrow and trauma into a most excellent story is one of my favorite things about this author. Definitely a must read.
I bought this on the strength of the description. It was not exactly a lie - it was just woefully inadequate. It turned out to be a weird parody of romance, fantasy, and spy novels jumbled together. I gave up after the first chapter.
I didn't get the romance between Terry and Olivia. Maybe because it's all Terry's POV? But, like all Royal States novels, there are horses! Despite Terry adopting a squirrel, I still think squirrels are evil.
This book started at a leisurely pace. About a quarter of the way through, I really got into it. I like the way magic works in this world. It just makes sense if magic can make sense. The love story of the main characters was beautiful. Try it for yourself!
Did the author just forget how to structure a book? There’s no conflict or relationship development. There’s no central plot driving the story so things just happen seemingly without reason. I kept reading hoping for something to break up the monotony of it, but I was left disappointed.
I love these books. Olivia is amazing and Terry knows it however he is to in his own way to realize he loves her. This storyline and characters are just to weird, chaotic and insane to really describe. I couldn’t do this book justice.
