The friendship and platonic bond that develops between them upsets the clergy that soon turns against he: they slander and criticize her for allegedly being a witch and incitew hostile action against ... Two people moral debt towards positions of leadership and social conditions of a religious fanatic era, living secretly love untold moments never feel free ... This serious responsibility not deprive the female instinct in the face of a Christian governor finds his closest friend and husband. The friendship and platonic bond that develops between them bothering the clergy not slow to turn against and criticize the categories as witches and inciter hostile action against ... Two people, fully aware of the moral debt that emanates from their towards positions of leadership and from the social conditions of that religious fanatic era, live their secretly, uncofessed love and never feel free .. when Christianity was declared the official religion of the Byzantine Empire, while the Greek philosophy was literally made illegal.
The time had come when the old, ingenious Greek heritage declined and a new religion, Christianity, spread in the world, with is teachings of equality and solidarity.
The Church took it upon itself to play an important part in the politics of the Byzantine Empire, signaling its further development: those times were going to be an era of upheavals and fierce religious fanaticism that deepened the passions of the conflicting religious beliefs. In Alexandria, hate groups made up from impetuous Christians, wishing to establish Christianity against the spiritual and aesthetic Greek roots, begun to demolish pagan temples and to persecute pagans and Jews. Thefts, plunder, conspiracies, murder are every day events in the life of the city.
Hypatia, the last representative of the fading Greek civilization, resists audaciously armed with her knowledge and wisdom. With the strength of her immeasurable female responsibility, she bears the weight of the effort to preserve and possibly bring back to life the Greek spirit. These were but a few of the virtues that were appreciated in every circle and social class, especially by the hordes of admirers she won while teaching either in public spaces, or in the university, or even in her own home. She created a wide spiritual circle, mainly among the upper classes, and taught mathematics, astronomy and the philosophies of Plato and Aristotle.
Her personal relations with the imperial eparch Orestes caused anxiety to the Clergy, mainly because her deep interest in the affairs of the state. Her recommendations on the current administrative affairs seem to have influenced the eparch, as his decisions did not comply with those made by the Christian community.
