Another fun installment of THE LAST HUNTER franchise with the story finally dealing with the Poseidon Group. Unfortunately, it's as the entirety of humanity is being invaded by the Locusts. There's a bunch of fun twists and turns but it remains like a comfortable pair of socks with our heroes always outgunned but working toward saving humanity. I feel the series has gone on enough that it should be wrapped up but have enjoyed it the entire way through.

Soooooo good!!!

Love this series! Love the characters too.
These two authors have worked their magic once again. This had lots of action sequence plus a lot of daring moves and intrigue by Lisa & one of the Chen’s as they play as: spies, chaos makers, gorilla warfare client recruiters and production, plus security officers taking custody of the bad guys and or killing them. They rock in this book.
It just got deep for Jack and company. They got one heck of a surprise once in Confederate space, and now they know the fight just got a lot harder and it’s a long way from over. I cannot wait for the next book!👍
Warning☠️-plot information:
I do wish we had more of a storyline for India and her crew. She’s been sidelined, like an extra in a movie production, since Jack sent her to set up the gate system, which was a long time ago. This is one of the first times she’s really been back in the action, yet, any action her ship sees is simply reported to us versus an in person presence with play by play action details. That would have been a huge action & dramatic set! Plus it would have reiterated the excellent fighter and leader that India brings to the storyline. I think this was a huge missed opportunity & frankly a disservice to her character. IMO

Leaps and bounds better than the last installment because they are actually doing something in this book. There are a lot of really nonsensical decisions and once again everything always works out on in their favor. Like EVERYTHING, but that complaint is small compared to the padding we've endured up to this point. If the rest of the novels in the series keep this up it could finish well. I am not holding my breath.

And the saga continues. After finding themselves locked into the Confederation proper, Admiral Jack Romanoff and his battleship, the *Delta Orionis*, a.k.a. the *Hunter*, have their work cut out for them. They had not planned on getting back to the Confederation core, but they also couldn’t let defenseless civilian starships fall to the Locust so they did what they were supposed to do and that was attack through the gate and kill the Locust. Unfortunately, the gate was destroyed, but not only had the Delta Orionis made it through, but the *Scorpius*, command by Admiral McKinnon was with them. It didn’t take long for these two powerful warships to wipeout this contingent of Locusts.

Now, they had new plans to make. And there’s one thing you’ll notice in every one of these books is that Admiral Romanoff and his fellow leaders do and that is plan their next steps. They meticulously sit down and discuss thoroughly everything everyone is going to do in the next operation. These people have more meetings that I could stand. Yet, as vast as space is, it does take some time to travel from one place to another so I suppose they are using their time wisely. And the results usually turn out in favor of Admiral Romanoff and his warriors, usually!

They decided that since they have no quick way back to the cluster in which they came from, they might as well start their war against the Poseidon Group. But first they need a base of operations that can support to huge battleships. They also have two spy ships, one built by Patrick, the mysterious assassin from the Kingdom and another one they captured from the Kingdom fleet sent to spy on them. These two ships are almost impossible to detect and they have also built some undetectable cruisers and starfighters. So, where do they think they can operate from without causing too much attention from the turncoats Confederation Navy or the Poseidon Group. That place appears to be the planet Faust.

Faust is a heavily populated planet that is not directly in the Confederation proper. It’s on the periphery and fortunately can be shut off from the rest of the Confederation by attacking and destroying a few quantum gates. They need to do this to ensure a couple of things. One is to stop the inflow of more Locusts and their Tardan controllers. It seems that there are a lot more Locusts in this region of space than they anticipated. Additionally, these Locusts are not responding to the codes that they had previously obtained and used back in the other cluster. So, until they got the new codes, they were just going to have to destroy these Locusts as they met them. Second, they needed to ensure no more Confederation Naval forces came into this sector of space. Admiral Romanoff didn’t want to destroy the Navy that he had been part of, but he couldn’t tell which Commanders had been replaced by Poseidon Group traitors or were patriots working under difficult conditions. The fewer Naval forces he had to encounter, the better.

So, it was to Faust that he turned and began executing their plans. Taking the planet would be difficult since it did have a Naval presence and they had been building some advance oversized antiproton beam weapons. Those weapons could definitely put a hurt on either the *Delta Orionis* or the *Scorpius*. But with the two powerful battleships working together, they should be able to take them out and might do so just using the very stealthy spy ships. The other problem Admiral Romanoff had was that he didin’t want to destroy any more of the infrastructure of Faust than he had to because it may have to be used to fight off a future attack by the mysterious Kingdom.

Plans were made and actions began while the *Delta Orionis* waited for the *Scorpius* to returned from a scouting mission. But, the *Scorpius* suddenly appeared way too soon and was going way, way too fast in an unusual direction in this system. The also couldn’t get any comms out of the *Scorpius* which added to the puzzle. Romanoff directed the *Delta Orionis* to go meet with the *Scorpius* and was shocked when he got within visual range. He was finally receiving a message from the *Scorpius* but it was sent by Rear Admiral Ann Walker, the Executive Officer, from the secondary bridge. Just knew this was going to be bad news just by looking at the *Scorpius*.

Well, things just get started in this book and there’s definitely a lot more to do. Whether Admiral Romanoff has the assets to accomplish anything is still in question. I honestly don’t know where this story is going now but I feel it’s going to be a much longer journey. Book 14, “Lightning Strike”, is available for pre-order on Amazon and should be available by 26 May 2024.

No Retreat

I love this series. Even the goofy uniforms with the greatcoats.

This is Book 13 in the Last Hunter series. The cast is large. Admiral Jack Romanoff is the military commander. Vice Admiral Amanda Harris is his flag captain, on the Hunter. Vice Admiral India McKinnon is the captain of the Scorpius. Sara Nastasi is the head of the administrative team on Hunter, and Adm Romanoff’s girlfriend. Mac Turner is the leader of the Marines on board. Along with them are three members of Confederation Intelligence: David and Tina Chen and Lisa Gane.

Through an odd sequence of events, she shares her body with Regex, a Tardan scientist. They get along better than it seemed like they would.

The Good Guys have been located in “the Cluster” defending the Confederation from the Locusts, robotic drones created by the Tardans. The Tardans came to the cluster fleeing the Novarites, who in turn were fleeing from humans in The Kingdom. As if that weren’t enough, when the Locusts came back, there was a coup in the confederation proper by a subversive group named the Poseidon Group, who had been siphoning off funds intended for the Battleship Group of the Confederation Navy for centuries.

We thought we had the Locusts figured out, but at the end of Book 12 we learned that there are some Locusts in the Confederation. We thought we had the codes to control them but these Locusts don’t respond to our code. As events closed in Book 12, the Good Guys were trapped in the Confederation, unable to return to the cluster. They were going to have to fight the Locusts, the Tardans, and the Poseidon Group to free the Confederation. That set the stage for “No Retreat.”

Have you ever sat in a work meeting that seemed to go on forever? And the people in the meeting didn’t know what was going to happen but belabored the possibilities ad infinitum? The first third of this book is like two of those meetings in a row. I swear that some of the people spoke up at length just to hear their own voices. I was struggling to follow the plot.

After that the story gets traction. Jack decides to try to destroy portal gates to give himself a base of operations in the Confederation. Along the way, they find other Locusts and defeat them as they isolate their base. Most of this book is about the Battle of Faust, the planet that they plan to use for their base. Ironically, Faust was the planet that Hunter orbited for centuries as a museum piece.

Read along and find out what challenges face the battleships and the intelligence agents as the take on all comers to establish their base. Amanda is put on the spot to lead the good guys in this one. It’s not an accident that her nickname is “Goddess of Death.”

I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait for the next one.

Great Read

Admiral Romanoff and his crew are in the thick of it again. Now being isolated from the Cluster and it’s support and resupply, he and Admiral India McKinnon commanding the Scorpius are faced with subduing the traitorous Poseidon Group in control of the planet Faust in order to establish a base of operations. Knowing the AI run Locus are only a few months away and Admiral McKinnon is off securing the rest of the quadrant, Admiral Romanoff and crew are making plans to secure the enemy held orbital facilities and the two super weapons that pose a deadly threat the Hunter. But Scorpius just jumped back into the system as planned by immediately headed away from Faust. It appears the Locus are swarming in from an undiscovered gate, and Scorpius is now limping back. The other shoe just dropped!

A battle brews for Faust...

Faust is currently under The Poseidon Group's control, but the Locusts are coming. Jack and India, with the Delta Orionius and Scorpios attempt to isolate this region to prevent the Locusts from getting through. Meanwhile, Tina and Lisa are tasked with releasing the documentaries on Faust to let the people know what is really happening - as well as undermining the Poseidon Group as much as possible. These events lead to some brutality, battles, deaths, and surprises as well as a marriage proposal and much suspense and intrigue as the battles against the advancing Locusts and the Poseidon Group on and around Faust come to a head. This makes for an entertaining novel of espionage, space battles and guerilla warfare.....

Yet another massive battle

The authors really aren’t afraid to stack the deck with totally unexpected problems! Admiral Romanoff on Hunter along with his old XO on Scorpius have a great plan to rescue the remaining humans on Vesuvius.
Unfortunately they forgot about the cardinal rule that no plans survive first contact with the enemy. To say that Murphy’s Law is heavily involved is a massive understatement regarding the devil Murphy being hard at work against the efforts to make the Cluster safe against the Locusts and restore the Confederation from the successful coup by the Poseidon group.

Lots of separate storylines

This time round, everyone appears to be acting independently, but towards a common goal
Lisa & Tina are working.planet side, David is in a stealth ship and Amanda is doing her usual thing of killing things
At times it's disjointed, jumping from one storyline to the next by chapter, yet I doubt there is a better way to do it and still keeping the timelines aligned
Not the best in the series, but still good and still good enough to keep you interested

The war continues

Well Jack and his crew of Hunter, find themselves well into the enemy territories. But this is not going to stop him from taking the battle to them. But there is a couple of unexpected shock along the way. Amanda show people that she is not only strong dealing with the enemy from the bridge, but shock a few people when she meets them face to face. Recommend this series.

good but wordy

Looking forward to the end of this series. These books are getting overly wordy. I can skip many pages of the book. I understand you have a story that won’t fill a required number of pages so off we go into tedious explanations of the obvious. Like clothes, food, rooms, buildings, …

Good news, bad news. Then good again.

The story of battle. Even doing everything right, Jack and the crews of the Confederation battleships suffer damage in changing circumstances. But Fortune smiles again and they secure needed assistance. A lot of action happening in multiple locations. Don't worry though, all the pieces come together.

Outstanding book ... Always providing events you had no clue were coming.

As in the real world, this book shows decisions have consequences. Discussions made in the heat of battle affect much more than just the outcome of the battle.

better episode!

Things got ‘meaty’ and much was accomplished rather than talking so much and too much background information that while interesting didn’t move the storyline along very well.
Not so this book !
Great job !

Another solid extension of the plot. The story line flowed well and sets up the follow on book. The character development is keeping pace with the action.

Well done!

Solid writing and a well paced plot. Some sections are a little over the top, but even then they are tastefully done.

When things were finally going in the right direction the authors throws in a stupid twist making everything take two steps backwards instead.

Personally I am not a fan of these “Hollywoodesque” twists. Unfortunately this series have a habit of interspersing quite good books with not soo good books.

In the beginning of the series the authors dragged things out forever and in several books they keep harping about who many guns the battleship were missing and how they had to repair it and get it fully functional.

Then the series started to go in the right direction just to get interrupted by some book loaded with political bullshit or simply just dragging things out without going anywhere.

This is one of those books. A stupid and unnecessary twist is thrown in which just sets everything back. There were plenty enough going on that this was not needed and it really annoyed me.

The books is not bad but due to the above mentioned rubbish it was just okayish for me.
