Rate this book
Mystic Rising tells a coming of age story about Mayu Hinamori, a socially awkward girl who discovers the assistants at her high school are mythical creatures disguised as humans. As kind and wise as they are, there seem to be more to them as they help Mayu navigate the challenges of both school life and the mystical worlds hidden in plain sight.

So I told the author I would write a very honest review of the book and she is special to me so I said I would be brutally honest. Overall I did enjoy the story. The characters were interesting and the main character, Mayu, can be a little off putting at times. At first she comes off as whiny but she grows into a strong character. The story has an interesting premise and there are some twists and turns at the end of the book that surprised me. The story also ends in a way that makes you want to read more. There were a few problems that I had with the story though. First off, there are a few grammatical errors and spelling errors. This isn't too big of a deal since the author self published. Publishing companies don't even get everything right. the second issue I had with the book was it's pacing. The beginning of the book was a little slow, and I personally did not enjoy all the more 'normal' day to day school life things that the mc was going through. But I understand that it was necessary to build upon the characterization of Mayu. I personally would have enjoyed a few more of the 'whats going on?' moments with Mayu before the realized there are other worlds around her. The hopspital scene is a perfect example. that part was beautifully written.
Those were basically my only concerns. The story picks and and once it did it was hard to put down. Mayu is a well written character and Devin Thornton wrote a story that was intriguing and made me want to read more. I can't wait until the next book is published. This was honestly not the greatest review but this was a great read. Devin Thornton knocked this out of the park.
