About the author

Yana Toboso (枢 やな Toboso Yana) is a female Japanese manga artist born in Warabi, Saitama Prefecture, Japan and currently resides in Yokohama. She is best known for Black Butler (黒執事 Kuroshitsuji), a popular shonen manga series.

She has also written yaoi under the pen name Yanao Rock (簗緒ろく).

Appearance
Yana Toboso draws herself as a devil with a black body and horns, a white head, and a pointed tail. She has never uploaded a picture of herself, so her actual appearance is unknown.

i feel like my interest in black butler is slightly slipping. which is kind of sad since this is my favorite manga.

but for now i’m going to pretend that it’s the monthly update, since i sometimes tend to forgot that a new chapter has been released.

lately the plot and drawing has been a bit mundane, and the chapters are getting shorter by the minute. but i am enjoying how our author yana is giving us access to certain characters past lives, before they started working under the phantomhive name.

3.5 stars does this justice. i’m hoping that we get to see more of ”ciel’s” sibling, and how the undertaker is connected to all this. praying that the time for that will come soon!

I'm getting tired of Black Butler. I've followed the story for more than a decade at this point and there's too little happening.

I love the characters, I want to know more but it takes so long for anything to happen it gets boring.

Entretenido sin más. Se finiquita la misión en el Hospital de veteranos, de una forma quizás apresurada pero tan escabrosa-cuqui como siempre. En este mismo volumen, comienza la parte de Snake y Finnian que deben infiltrarse en un orfanato. Aquí se recuperan viejos personajes. Parece que Yana Toboso quiere cerrar el círculo.... Aunque nos lleve a repasar los primeros números de la serie.

Okay now sanitarium arc is DONE and we move onto Snake and Finny in the orphanage.

I love Snake, he's such a weirdo with his snakes.😭 Him and Finny are such a chaotic duo because they don't want to fail at their mission but they almost instantly fail at their mission.

We see another character back from the circus arc alive, but I highly doubt they are actually ALIVE.

The volume went so fast I feel like not much happened, which is so sad because this is the last currently published volume.😭 I feel like the chapters just keep getting shorter and shorter which is ass.

I like this arc and finally getting to see more of the other characters but this is absolutely not the arc to leave off on because it's just not that exciting, and more character based. It's building up so much only to not see the payoff like damn.

So funny how I have been reading these aggressively nonstop because I wanted to finish this series only to now wish there were more volumes to read.😔✌️ Must have been so tragic to read these short ass chapters once a month about the side characters.

Très heureuse suite à la lecture de ce tome qui après un tome 32 où j’étais un peu moins emballée par la possible longueur de l’intrigue, cependant je suis emballée et rassurée par cette suite qui fini l’arc de Bard et Lau (tout de même intéressante car tourne autour de l’intrigue commune de la récolte du sang !) Mais il est vrai que ce tome 33 nous emmène dans une intrigue plus prenante malgré que ça ne soit que le début ! J’ai hâte d’en découvrir plus notamment avec un retour inattendu !! Certains indices sont très intéressants et j’ai vraiment hâte d’en découvrir toujours plus avec cette suite ! Je suis tout de même déçue de ne pas retrouver notre duo Sebastian et Ciel pour ce tome mais c’est à défaut pour l’intrigue et la logique du tome donc il faut tenir son mal en patience pour une suite encore plus belle ! Je suis heureuse d’arriver à la dernière équipe d’autant plus mon attache forte pour finnian et snake alors ensemble c’est encore plus génial !

1. Jag skulle dö för varje karaktär 2. Jag älskar den här serien 3. KONSTEN BLEV SÅ MYCKET BÄTTRE UNDER ÅREN 4. Tog fett länge att läsa och serien är inte ens klar😭 5. Älskar hur alla karaktärer har bra/intressanta historier och hur de alla jobbar tillsammans på olika sätt 6. Varje gång jag tror jag vet allt får jag veta fett mycket mer fakta jag inte innan visste 7. SÅ MÅNGA PLOT TWISTS 8. Snyftade här o där 9. Älskar hur författaren skriver trauma på ett mer realistiskt sätt än andra, man fattar verkligen hur allt påverkar karaktärerna 10. Har seriöst inget dåligt att säga😻 (också #TRUST att jag och meyrin gifter varandra någon gång hon är definitivt top 3 karaktär men sorry ciel o sebastian stal plats 1 o 2)

Come sempre la trama è molto interessante ma purtroppo inizia a farmi perdere un pò l'entusiasmo a leggere la serie in quanto la pubblicazione tra un volume e l'altro dista quasi un anno.

We finished part of the blood arc at the hospital and now at an orphanage and met back up with a Circus friend! So glad we got to see Snake again!
I am seeing links from the Titanic and Circus arc connections coming back in full force. Finale is slowly slipping into place?

Nyaris setahun lalu, pada jilid 32 kita disuguhkan kisah tentang masa lalu koki keluarga Phantomhive selagi dia menyelidiki Sanatorium Athena. Pada jilid 33 ini perjalanannya berlanjut. Terkuaknya rahasia Sanatorium Athena sebagai bagian dari sindikat darah Undertaker, turut menguak jati diri salah satu staff di sana yang ternyata adalah mayat hidup.

Rumitnya situasi ini menyeret banyak pihak, terutama sang Earl muda dan para pelayannya. Selain itu, tampaknya Undertaker berhasil menggaet banyak orang ke pihaknya demi kepentingan yang belum pasti diketahui -- barangkali untuk mendapatkan keabadian. Sementara di sisi lain, Lau yang bekerja sama dan tidak berada di pihak Undertaker, tampaknya menyimpan agenda tersembunyi. Para shinigami pun juga dibuat kerepotan, terutama karena biang onar dari masalah ini pernah menjadi bagian dari organisasi mereka.

Well, dalam jilid ini, sekilas semakin tampak betapa rumitnya masalah sindikat darah ini. Hal-hal terkait kriminalitas, yang jelas-jelas salah, kerap tetap dimanfaatkan oleh segelintir pihak yang punya kuasa untuk mengejar berbagai kepentingan pribadi ataupun golongan. Dan dalam situasi serupa, bukan hal yang mengherankan jika siapapun akan sulit untuk saling mempercayai.

Si Undertaker bikin orang kena trust issue saja 🤦🏻‍♂️

Series Info/Source: This is the 33rd volume in the Black Butler series. I bought this in paperback.

Thoughts: This volume finally gets us back in to the main story and out of delving into the characters' back stories. I enjoyed it but was also a bit frustrated that more progress wasn't made here. We are still dealing with the blood collection/Aurora Society storyline. Sebastian finally makes a brief appearance but Ciel is no where in sight.

The story mainly sticks with Baldo and Lau who are trying to help get the Aurora Society out of the sanatorium. We do cut over to a couple other scenes but the bulk of the book deals with that. I felt like not a lot of progress was made in this book and am ready for this storyline to tie up.

This is beautifully illustrated as always. I am enjoying the story enough that I will stick with the series and I loved looking at the illustration here.

My Summary (4/5): Overall not a ton to say about this volume. It was beautifully illustrated and a decent read. I am happy to be getting back to the main storyline but a bit disappointed more progress wasn't made. The story feels a bit slow and scattered right now. I do plan on continuing with the series but would really love to spend time with Sebastian and Ciel again at some point.

My review of 32 is still relevant here, but under what seems to be more slow plodding and stretching the story to its seams, I picked up two interesting thoughts, which are spoilers, so . . .

(Sebastian holds dominion over the he servants and can refuse them death as evidenced here with Chef. Does that hold any significance with the reanimated corpses? Perhaps something that devils can do organically and that humans are trying to reproduce? Or, and this leads to my second question - what happens when a grim reaper dies (which should be used loosely because I assume they're either already dead or not human so I'm not sure how death fits in with death reapers)? Do they have souls that could then pop into reanimated corpses? And that brings me back to my original second point: was a "dead" grim reaper in Layla's reanimated corpse? Is this awesome sort of warfare or a game between devils and grim reapers or someone else out there? Cat and mouse? Moose and Squirrel? ;))

And that elevates this volume. I'm curious. But have wait . . . again. The life of a manga reader. I appreciate that we're at least getting a real story out of this, and more anime!

À table!

Les équipes mises en place par Sébastien continuent de glaner des informations sur les endroits qui prélèvent le sang.

Dans ce tome, nous suivons le reste des aventures du cuisinier qui fait quelques rencontres, pour le moins surprenantes. Il semblerait que les cadavres ambulants ne soient jamais bien loin…mais dans quel but?

Nous faisons aussi le début des aventures de l’équipe de Snake qui doit se rendre dans un orphelinat. Mais que se passe-t-il s’il n’arrive pas à y entrer? Ou si son ticket d’entrée ne tient qu’à son lien avec une personne à laquelle il ne sait plus s’il peut faire confiance…?

C’est toujours agréable de se replonger dans cette histoire qui mêle aventure et humour.

Les personnages sont attachants, on ne s’ennuie jamais dans leurs aventures et on rit bien à leurs côtés.

J’attends la suite avec impatience.

A solid volume. I think that the long delays between volumes hurt this series as I am not officially caught up with all that Yana Toboso has to offer us in the United States at this point. Another volume is due out in December 2025...but if you don't feel enough happens in this volume it hurts you. Any series that is giving you a new volume (roughly 200 pages) every 2-3 months will keep you content, but when it is stretched further it runs the risk of losing the audience. There was a lot of blood in this volume...not the most, but there was a lot in my opinion. The volume leaves you wanting more...which has become a Yana Toboso special in each and every volume. Until next volume, keep enjoying the amazing art and shocking stories by rereading this and any of your favorite previous 32 volumes.

I really missed these characters and this story.

I've seen a volume in Japanese with Snake on the cover, and I thought it might be the next volume, but I can't find an English language pre-order for it anywhere. And I think it was recently announced that the entire series is going on hiatus, which really sucks, because this arc has me pulled in, and I really don't want to have to wait a long time for the next volume.

I can't imagine that the series would be cancelled this late into its run, especially since after years of waiting we just got a new anime arc release. However, I'm not getting a good feeling about the future of Black Butler. I sincerely hope that Toboso is able to finish the series.

I love Black Butler and plan to keep reading until the end, but I am getting tired of the huge delays between volumes. We only get one a year now, and when it does come out, you can read the entire thing in 30 minutes and, in some cases, as with this volume, not a huge amount happens in those chapters. I really wish Yen Press would at least return to two volumes per year to move things along a bit. I don't have a lot to say about the content in this particular volume, except I always wish for more Sebastian in the volumes when he's mostly off-page. I guess I'll now have to wait a year to see what the next volume will bring. For this particular volume, I am giving it four stars.

Ça fait beaucoup là non?

Blague à part, cet arc n’en finit décidément pas, et commence à sentir le bâclé à plein nez (pas au niveau des dessins, ils sont toujours superbes). Mais je commence à perdre le fil, malgré le retour d’un vieux personnage auquel je ne m’attendais pas.

Je me suis déjà fait spoiler un événement important du prochain tome sur Tumblr, donc j’ai quand même hâte de voir dans quel contexte cela aura lieu.
