What Does The Constitution Actually Say? (5/5 Stars)
I rarely give nonfiction books 5 stars because I tend to save those reviews for books that can transport me somewhere and are fully immersive. Well... this book transports me to a time and place where the constitution actually WORKED. Someplace better than 2026. There were definitely times when I wanted to throw this book across the room because WHY IS NO ONE IN THIS CURRENT ADMINISTRATION FOLLOWING THE CONSTITUTION? But I simply couldn't because it's written too well and it really doesn't deserve the anger I am holding for the complete disregard for our laws and amendments (I'll save that for No King's Day). But if you're looking for a book that's going to make the somewhat wordy and dense writing of our forefathers easier to digest (the book has full copies of our important texts and then translations next to them), along with some humorous, yet well researched, tidbits to go along with it, this is your book. There were many times when I thought "ohhhh... is that where that came from?" or "that's in our constitution?" So please, before fighting in the comment sections of your favorite Facebook post, PLEASE PICK THIS UP. It's a quick read, and if you give the author 3 - 4 hours of your time, you'll walk away infinitely smarter than most of the people in this country, sadly... please read it while we still have a constitution, I implore you. If nothing else, it'll be a good souvenir if our country actually does fall... yikes...
No document is perfect. No government is perfect. But what the founding fathers outlined was pretty damn close.
Reading through the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and subsequent amendments, I am amazed at how well thought out the idea of a government for the people and by the people was materialized in these documents.
Fast forward to today, where everyone has such a distrust of government because there's a collective thought that it's now inherently corrupt. Reading this book made me sad.
The minute an executive order was used to create a law not created by Congress, that's when the president became king. As we watch what's unfolded since January, I see how we as a nation have become too reliant on one person and not on the branch of government, which is designed to be our representation. It's time for a change back to how our government is supposed to be run, because if it doesn't, someone far worse will end up in power.
I live in the United States and it's frustrating to watch the dismantling of democracy under the Trump regime. I've been turning to books on the Constitution to help me make sense of things. This is a really great breakdown on the Constitution.
