A great adoption to the light novels

Volumes one and two of the manga neatly wrap up volume 1 of the light novels. I think I actually liked the manga's condensed and streamlined version better than the novel but I'm not 100% sure. I think they both have their benefits and value. Overall though, for rereading value I think the manga is much easier commitment. I think they did a great job, so I highly recommend!

10/28/24 Ugh! Still torn! I like the magic system and the creepy murders are right up my ally. But why does she have to be in high school? The age gap is icky. Either he could be 20 or she could be 20 and it would significantly reduce the ick. But high school senor married to 24 year-old man, just no. Especially when he says things like "Well if you don't like it, why don't you push me away" No!! Ruined! Immediately ruined it, immediately!

In Summary
Saku and Hana tie the knot! But only they are aware it’s a contractual bond, so Hana’s stuck dealing with criticism in her new home in addition to increased antagonism at school. However, the focus abruptly shifts away from the snide remarks of her antagonists to a criminal investigation when Saku and Hana are tapped to solve a series of supernatural killings.

The Review
Volume 1 was mostly about Hana’s awful upbringing in the Ichise household. Now she begins her life as the lady of the influential Ichinomiya household. There is no sign or mention of Saku’s dad, but Saku’s mom and younger brother Nozomu are there to welcome Hana with heaps of criticism. Weirdly, even though Hana immediately suggests demonstrating her full powers to get them to accept her, Saku doesn’t seem inclined to bother convincing his family, so she doesn’t. Thus, it’s not until a week AFTER the wedding ceremony that Hana duels Nozomu a definitive win and earns the respect of the entire household. As satisfying as her victory is, you have to wonder why she didn’t do it the moment she walked in.

By the way, if you are a fan of traditional Japanese clothes, there’s plenty to admire in the wedding scene. Plus, Saku only ever seems to wear traditional garments.

Now the entire point of Saku marrying Hana is because he needs her power to secure the barrier around the all-important pillar. However, out of the volume’s six chapters, only one is devoted to the pair addressing that task. Of that chapter, half focuses on explanations about the pillar; half shows off Saku’s good points so that Hana will have a reason to fall in love with him.

The majority of the post-marriage pages are devoted to a murder investigation involving the supernatural. Because the supernatural elements are high level, Saku–despite his extraordinarily taxing task to secure the pillar’s barrier–gets roped into taking care of it. Unfortunately, even his shikigami can’t handle it, so he asks Hana for help. Although she’s warming up to Saku, she’s not in love with him yet, and it takes the addition of an ocean villa to their contract to secure her assistance.

Thus, this rom-com story of comeuppance takes a sharp turn into criminal investigation with the pair tracking down traces of malignant, resentful energy. Hana’s best friend Suzu also gets sucked into the mess as her boyfriend is involved. Because of the nature of the crime, the boyfriend is portrayed as an absolute no-good jerk. This sets the situation up in stark black-and-white terms, no gray areas at all. While this puts Hana and Saku firmly on the side of justice, the fact that the good and kind Suzu was dating such a detestable human puts her judgment into question.

By the way, our characters’ shikigami are present to do battle when the occasion calls for it. However, for the most part, they are simply there to make commentary or provide comic relief. (Tsubaki’s crush on Aoi looks like it will be an ongoing joke.)

Extras include an afterword and bonus story.

The volume was pretty good. We had comedy, family drama, and magic.

Hana is an interesting character in that she's not your typical shojo female protagonist who's one step away from being a saint. She's had a rough upbringing, with some truly awful parents, and this has warped her in ways that honestly make a lot of sense.

I will say, I'm sometimes uncomfortable with her relationship with Saku. It's very coercive. It's mostly played up for laughs, but it's actually kind of problematic. He pressures her into the relationship (true, he gets her away from her trash parents, but still), tricks her into being with him, and is very pushy about physical intimacy with her. At one point, he even says, "there are times when 'no' actually means 'more'". Again, it's played up for laughs, but is actually not that funny at all.

I loved this volume even more than the first one. It not only focuses on building their relationship, but also in the worldbuilding and the magic system. I'm really enjoying this series and looking forward to seeing what other challenges their relationship will face.

Overall 4 stars. I would recommend for those who like fantasy romance with a bit of family drama and marriage of convenience tropes. This volume is giving 'found family' and I'm all here for it.

The manga version may be slower than the light novel, but there is something about the artwork that really brings the story to life. These characters are hilarious, especially Hana and Saku. Really, they are well matched in their personalities and stubbornness. When they put all of the drama aside and work together, it's not a surprise that they are so strong together. It's especially endearing seeing Arashi join the ranks in this volume, and how Saku's family turns around and really accepts her into the family, even if his younger brother still acts a bit prickly about it.

Still liked it but I didn’t like that homeboy pulled the rug out from under her and that she was essentially fine with it. Not even calling him out on it later, it was completely forgotten! Girl, did you forget your original plan that quickly??

Otherwise, I liked their bond and I liked that we got an actual plot for this one with the dog and hey, she has a new spiritual companion. Did not like the tsundere little brother (love that she was pondering about the whole fam, lmao). I’ve read enough of those this year.

I'll give you a content warning because I wish I'd had one. Dogs die. It's a pretty big part of the second half of the book, so just be warned.

I'm still enjoying Saku and Hana together though, and I love that this is a case of he falls first, he falls harder. I'm also curious to learn more about Saku's family.

They better get together in next volume.

Can not wait. Such a wholesome and cute book. Fills every gap in every lonely soul without being sappy. Hope we don't have to wait too long for the next volumes.

ML has way too many red flags. I do adore the FL, but at this point, I'm losing interest. It sounds like this is just another Apothecary Diaries where the ML will constantly harass the FL. I was hoping for a better romance as the story is interesting.

The pacing felt very off at the start of this, but overall it was still enjoyable. I’m enjoying seeing a heroine so outclasses her love interest so much in raw power, aha.
