I wish this manga series wasn’t a direct copy of the movie. This could have been Gun Zi’s own version, maintaining the same story but with a unique touch. Instead, I could just rewatch the film, as each frame in the manga mirrors each panel from the movie.
I don’t want to compare two amazing artists, but Hoshikawa managed to adapt Beast and 15 into mangas that felt different despite telling the same story. However, I don’t get the same impression from Gun Zi, which is really disappointing. There was an opportunity to add more emotions, expressions, or depth to the characters- something that Bones famously censors. Unfortunately, this adaptation felt flat and abandoned.
The story’s place in the canon timeline remains uncertain because it doesn’t fit well anywhere. This manga was an opportunity to clarify that and tie it into the main timeline, but as far as I know, this still hasn’t happened. Asagiri didn’t write this story, so it’s odd that it received a manga adaptation of the film adaptation and that they’ve still left it so ambiguous.
If anything, this adaptation has made the Dead Apple story feel even more isolated and disconnected than it already was.
I really like this story as an individual oneshot, but it doesn’t fit into the timeline at all, and I’m quite sad it’s been so neglected. I can’t think of any reason to buy this manga because, from what I understand, you could just watch the anime with subtitles, and it would be exactly the same experience.
Honestly, I love this side series. Overall, seeing more about Atsushi's past and ability really adds to how I understand him in the main plot. Seeing Tsujimura was a big W and I found Shibusakwa's abilty to be very interesting. Though most of the anime fandom hates on the movie in particular, I'm thinking it's probably due to how the anime hasn't adapted Stormbringer yet. I highly recommend reading this after finishing the 15 and Stormbringer lightnovels, since a lot of the information that is found there is very relevant in Dead Apple.
I watched the anime before reading this manga and sill barely follow what is going on - I was ok until this volume. Other than more than the BSD usual silliness of any logic (which I am usually fine with for BSD but it was too much here), the action was hard to follow. I am not familiar with the artist’s other works (they used a different artist for this mini series) but I wish they had used an artist that was better with the flow of action, especially as there was quite a lot in this volume. As a whole, I would recommend sticking to the anime - and the Dead Apple movie was weaker than any of the seasons - it was kind of thrown in there as they had caught up with the manga.
Such a good ending, I absolutely thrived during those Chuuya scenes. I love Akutagawa too! The Armed Detective Agency always gives me found family vibes, I love seeing them together.
I was a little sad to not get more panels of Chuuya removing his gloves but it was still great in the end. I have officially finished everything that has to do with Dead Apple
chapter 13 i should just finish the book before complaining bc here chuuya calls him "an undercover agent" at the time of the dragon head conflict and that he acknowledges ango was against the shibusawa plan. i am pacified.
chapter 14 i'm literally the standing emoji it feels like i'm interrupting a vital skk moment. there was no need to draw it like that but the creators apparently ship it way more than i do. like it's a good panel i just prefer chuuya beating the shit out of dazai. and yeah there was no need for dazai to keep chuuya's head THERE. i get he collapsed but head down ass out?? (move dazai i want my hand in chuuya's hair). the more i read dead apple the more it makes sense so now i suppose i must rewatch the movie. the order of the clock tower and agatha christie is so fascinating to me i do hope she ends up being the big bad guy at the end of the day. mori's scalpels as a weapon is such a slay and the way he holds them literally chef's kiss. forget current skk i want more old skk, i live for fukumori.
final chapter big fights, and more questions about atsushi's tiger. "the aroma of a burning nation goes well with tea" she is so interesting i want to know more about her. i do not get enough of akutagawa and chuuya interactions and i think we all deserve that. atsushi is literally oda 2.0 but a bit different in that atsushi truly believes everything dazai does is for the greater good and oda believed that dazai could do everything for the greater good. despite his methods or motives atsushi really does see him as noble and grand. they're the two people whose belief in him really does surprise him the most and isn't that interesting. do i find this unfair to akutagawa? maybe but the loss and angst of it all does make for such a fascinating read. the fact of being so advanced among one's peers it becomes isolating to the point of damaging. i could think about this for days and write essays on it that's how crazy and well done i think dazai and fyodor's characters are. (still dislike dazai quite a bit tho, don't u hate when such a well-beloved and well-written character and should by every characteristic be someone i love ends up being someone i hate.)
Five stars just because Dazai and Chuuya are gay as FUCK.🥺 The trust Chuuya put into Dazai and Dazai holding his face like that... I'm sick.
As for the rest of this, I still don't really get it?? It was a lot going on in the end but I'm glad everything worked exactly the way Dazai anticipated it.
Very confusing in general why this was a spin off that doesn't even connect to the main story like huh? But I understand this was made after the movie.
Atsushi looked extra cute in here like he still had that fuckass haircut but it looked better in this art style.🤌
Chòi oi coi anime rùi đọc lại vẫn thấy hay đỉnh chóp. Art khum lung linh bằng 2 người còn lại thôi chứ vẫn xinh iu lắm. Chuya ngầu quá. Aku đẹp trai quá em ơi. Kyoka với Atsu vẫn iu như thường. Trio tuyệt vời xin cảm ơn
