This was a very solid sequel to the first volume. While not quite hitting those same intense highs, it did a lot more work on the world building and overall stakes of this world. I know not everyone shares this opinion, but I can’t help but appreciate how much of an unapologetically degenerate Matthew is — he’s a very multifaceted character in my opinion, and that continues to be true in this installment. He really is the shining light of this novel and world, and while it’d be great to get more from other characters, I’m content with also staying firmly planted in his shades of gray reality. I also liked how there were some echoes of events that affected the plot in this one, while not being too much of the same thing. Finally, what a great cliffhanger and I’m looking forward to where the story goes from here.

Matthew has found new purpose and that is to prowl back alleys killing drug dealers in order to keep his junkie platonic roommate flush with drugs. Supposedly, his eventual goal is to wean her from drugs, but in the interim he willing to murder anyone that inconveniences her. He is inconstant as sometimes he acts guilty about murder and other times he claims he would do it again and "better". He is also kind of a hypocrite as he often gets preachy about morality especially with followers of the sun god. The story is entertaining enough though.
