Yurugi has fled the hospital with Ichika in tow. As they grapple with the fleeting nature of their romance and, indeed, of life itself, the series quietly closes things out.
There’s not much more I need to say other than that I’m kind of relieved that I don’t have to read another volume of this series, but that’s never stopped me before, has it?
As previously noted, this story means very well and utterly lacks the chops to either take a stand, sell its drama, or make things interesting. A story about characters dying should not leave me disaffected like this, but it doesn’t make much impact.
It’s about philosophy, only the kind tinged by despair. I certainly understand trying to understand what comes next and whether anything means anything, especially when the answer is coming directly at you. I like the way that this search, and Yurugi’s words, ultimately lead Ichika to a reasonable conclusion.
I’m less certain if I like the actual ending, which leaves Ichika’s fate completely up in the air. You could argue that some things in life are just unknown, but mostly it feels like a cop-out. She was the driving force, not Yurugi, so…
There’s also a poem at the crux of all this as well, which forms the foundation for the whole thing, but I also couldn’t tell you, genuinely, if you wouldn’t be better served just reading the poem and skipping this.
It is an unsatisfying, but well-meaning mess. Iffy art and underbaked writing lead to a climax that should be shattering, but instead can barely scratch the surface. The amount of time it takes Ichika to actually believe Yurugi is gone is a real stretch too.
This didn’t really work at all. There is a nice bit at the end with Ichika’s jerk of a brother, but he sort of needs it after he basically roasts Ichika about her relationship after Yurugi is dead, not that he knows it.
The romance falls flat, it doesn’t make much use of the things it’s supposedly talking about, and doesn’t land well. Yet I can’t bring myself to completely dismiss it, just because it is trying so hard. It’s always better to make the effort than give up, which, in its own ironic way, ties to themes in the story.
And as long as it takes for Ichika to process that grief, when it hits her, it really hits her. That’s probably the best part of the whole series and I wish it had done more with it. There some okay scenes between Ichika and Yurugi, but this should be going for broke way more than it does.
3 stars - A for effort, C for execution. I doubt I’ll read this again, honestly, and there are better stories about this sort of thing out there waiting for you to find. This one isn’t an embarrassment, but it isn’t great either.
My heart hurts… The ending is realistic but I couldn’t help wanting that happy ending though… Terminal illnesses are just horrible. You get an estimate of the time you have left and somehow you’re supposed to keep living! Damn.
6.5/10 stars overall. This was somewhat enjoyable but it didn't really have much of an impact on me which was surprisingly concerning the subject matter.
A bit underwhelming. Probably the worst volume, surprisingly not that emotional. I wanted more! Still enjoyed the characters and their struggles though!
This series is really sad so I don’t recommend it if you don’t want to feel depressed. I picked it up from the library thinking it was a romcom and it is definitely not one!
