For a book that was published over 10 years ago, the information offered is still highly relevant. Marie-Claire Ross offers solutions to safety communication that a person at any level can understand and put to use. I am the safety representative at my workplace and am excited to get started on using these tactics for the upcoming year.

Highly recommended to anyone looking to enhance the safety culture in any business!

I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.

Transform Your Safety Communication by Marie-Claire Ross is an excellent introduction to the topic of safety communication and a useful how-to book for developing effective messages. Ross uses a mixture of marketing principles, human psychology, and good design to look at safety communication in a new light. I would recommend it to anyone who crafts messages or creates signage, not only in the realm of safety.

Ross starts off the book by discussing proven, effective methods of communicating information: (a) ensure the messages are in multiple places and can be seen multiple times; (b) know exactly who your audience is and what they care about; (c) use only one clear message; and (d) create communications that look and feel consistent. So instead of a pedantic discussion of safety standards, Ross jumps right into how people understand the messages they see and thus how to create better messaging. The next few chapters look at these elements in more detail and provide interesting examples to illustrate the concepts. The end of the book includes useful templates for creating a variety of communications - I think these could work for many types of communication, not only safety.

One quirky thing about the book is Ross's constant reference to her posts in her blog and other online materials. Obviously in a printed book you can't go to specific pages or play the video she is referencing. I guess if this was an ebook these references could be live and interactive, but it seemed a bit gratuitous in a physical book. But that is my only small critique. Otherwise I thought the book was clear and interesting, with a lot of great information, even if the topic might not seem relevant to everyone.

Are you looking for a resource to help you communicate your safety efforts more effectively?

The resource that I am talking about is “Transform Your Safety Communication”.” written by Marie-Claire Ross.

This resource is chocked full of good information that you can use to enhance your safety process.

Marie-Claire states in her book “Humans can only learn and remember so much information at once. The more information you give people, the more they get paralyzed by it.” Unfortunately this statement is so true, as safety professionals sometimes tend to overwhelm employees with a lot of information to absorb. Many times we think that training and retraining employees will solve a problem. But in reality, this is only a crutch and short term fix that we use.

Part 2 of the book discusses “two types of emotional content for you to work with surprise and fear.” I believe that this part of the book will help you make you think more about the emotions of how people react with training.

My favorite parts of the book is Chapter 5, stories were Marie-Claire states “To use stories effectively, as a leader you must learn to see the relationship between one thing and another (just like metaphors). You must also design stories that change the mind and behaviour of your audience.”

I have found throughout my career that telling stories to make a point has a greater impact on the learning ability of anyone.
All and all, this is a great book that I would recommend for your bookshelf. I can see you constantly referring to this book to reevaluate your communication process.

Very easy to read and very clear writing, close to speech complexity, makes it easy to understand and faster to read. At times too informal especially the parenthesis parts that are a bit distracting from the flow of the text. Also one of the lists starts at 3, which is confusing. The numerous links in the text stopped the flow a bit too. I usually don't read sitting by a computer so it's a hassle to go and watch them. A short description of that is in the link would be nice, or a link reference in the back. Some links had descriptions others didn't.

Not coming from a business or marketing background I understood the concepts easily and had some ideas on how to use them. Especially in laboratory safety in classes. Students easily forget safety instructions and this would help in creating things that would reinforce that.

That snipe at academics at the end was off putting. Jargon is for field specific publications or communication. For general communication a good academic can write in clear language. So talking about a whole huge field of people in such a generalization will make you lose out on that audience. And I think that this could be useful to workers (academics) in research and biotechnology.

you can't talk to much when you meet clients or other peoples? you confused and afraid what you said will threw back at you?

this book is like a guidance to whom that feel unsafe when they talk the other. clients, person, manager or anybody that makes your works' work. because you don't want to makes mistakes when you gave them information, data or anything they ask for

really eye catching to see those diagram, graphic on this book because it will help you to learn fast from this book.

the only reason why i gave this book 4 stars is because the book can be more great if they use graphics more so it can help those who lazy to read can understand when they see the picture but efficient. and i was wondering what happen if the person is an introvert :)
