Malinkar – Lord of enmity

This is an excellently written book that demonstrates both creativity and originality.

It's very rare to play a baddy in a book. Alright, your actions are hardly those of a good neighbour in Warlock of Firetop Mountain (Jackson and Livingstone) and Dracula and Grendel are both monsters (J Green), but this is different. You don't begin as a fully fledged baddy with lots of tricks up your sleeve, but instead you start as a teenager and you develop your powers as the book goes on. This is novel and rather than it being boring not having legions of undead to unleash in your bid for world domination you can enjoy developing your character and ability to become a first class git to people.

At first I wasn't too sure about the sexual element of the gitness, but it does go with the character and if an aspiring evil wizard type can't get himself laid, then it makes you wonder what the point of learning magic is, apart from the eventual world domination bid, etc.

The plot builds up logically and slowly in this book of two equally good halves. The writing is very good (just one typo, phased instead of fazed) and it is superb to see each paragraph being fully fleshed out with lots to read. One of my pet hates is when someone produces a gamebook with 1-2 sentence paragraphs, as that feels like little effort has gone in. You certainly get your money's worth here and it is all great to read. You don't want to just skip to the decision, but instead enjoy every line. This also has the advantage of making it feel a much bigger book than its 300 entries.

In addition to all of this, the art is very strong with little spacer drawings in particular being of top quality.

There are some astoundingly good ideas in here. One is the optimum outcome with the pet, most certainly one of you had a better time than the other, but it is extremely creative. The trial, punishment and escape is first class and also very creative.
