This book is a fun, fast little modern, urban romantasy novella with magic, African Fae, and on-page spice!

The Bakazi fae are supernatural people who originally came from the African continent. They can wield magic and control the elements. Their mortal enemies are the Zakari, who are high-level demons. Jack is an abomination because he is half Bakazi, half Zakari. The event that caused this is in the prologue, and there is a list of trigger warnings to check out first, because he was not conceived with is mother's consent. Because of his mixed bloodline, he and the others like him are not allowed to have mates or a family, the Bakazi cannot risk their blood being tainted by the Zakari half. He is doomed to be a guard and nothing more for the rest of his life.

Everything changes when Jack is assigned to bring a Wayward back home. A Wayward is someone with Bakazi blood and magic who was raised outside of their kingdom, and may not know their heritage.

Autumn is a normal woman living a normal life, until Jack saves her from would-be magical assassins and hides her away in a safe-house. They feel a mating bond instantly, but as Autumn learns of her Bakazi heritage it becomes very clear that the feelings they have for each other are most certainly forbidden. The threat to her life comes from both the outside and inside, and Jack will do anything to protect her. There were a couple of great plot twists that made things more dangerous for Autumn, but also gave her answers about who she is and where she came from.

The ending was wrapped up nicely and sets the story up for book two. I always appreciate when an author gives us a satisfying conclusion rather than a complete cliffhanger. I definitely will be reading book two. There are a couple of side characters, Kamara and Carver, that I'm hoping will hook up in later books. I recommend this book to fans of spicy romantasy novellas!

Author, K.C. Harris, which added depth to my reading experience. Harris does a brilliant job of developing her characters, letting readers get to know them and their personalities without feeling rushed. The images she paints make the characters relatable and real, detailing their physical attributes, quirks, and pasts.

“Wayward” tells the story of a woman who, through a tragic event, grows up without any knowledge of her magical family history. As she comes of age and faces unfolding events, her world changes completely when her past is suddenly thrust in front of her, forcing her to confront it head-on.

I devoured this book in one sitting.

The main female character, Autumn reminded me of myself with insecurities that made her very relatable and 3 dimensional…and Jack’s battle with himself really drives home why they are perfect for each other.

Without giving anything away, I will say that this book kept me on the edge of my seat and left me wanting more. I can’t wait to see what this author has in store next.
