Difficult topics are discussed in this story including mental health. Mature content, adult language, and disturbing matters that may trigger an emotional response.
Maverick was incredibly weak-willed, so much so that he allowed the heroine’s half-sister to manipulate him and be around him constantly all the while claiming that the heroine is important to him. He gets annoyed with the half-sister for treating the heroine like shit, but it doesn’t stop him from having a drunken night with her. He just seems all kinds of gross…and creepy considering the age the heroine was when he started noticing her as more than his best friend’s little sister.
Scarlet (heroine) could have been such an interesting character but unfortunately the author chose to write her as a typical NA heroine: sheltered, inexperienced and naive when it comes to life and relationships. This made her come off as bland despite the fact her mental state was a big part of the story and should have made her different.
Skylar (half sister) was an over-the-top villain who didn’t seem smart enough to pull off everything she apparently did.
The father’s situation seemed more like a cop out…and after all those years, it seemed weird that the mother never moved on from the man she was convinced cheated on her.
I need more substance and for things to make sense in the fiction I read.
Not my cuppa.

I can’t begin to express how much I love ISA Bella’s books. A Second Chance was fully packed with so much emotion with such delicacy that had you riding the roller coaster of this book. I absolutely without a doubt that this is one of my favorites. The raw emotions and truth behind the topics of this book outweighed anything else. I could personally relate so much with this book it felt like I was getting a front row seat into the lives of this book. With my own personal experiences that reflect in this book, I was able to feel those raw emotions and put words to the feelings that I have held dear. Absolutely the highest recommendation from me.
This book was ok. Please check your triggers. I almost didn’t start this book due to the triggers and I should have listened to my gut. Anyways, personally, this book was good but I had a hard time relating to certain characters and couldn’t understand the motives behind Skylar, regardless of reasoning I guess evil is just evil. I sometimes got confused and was like wait when did that happen but after reading another chapter it would explain everything.
Scarlett had such a beautiful life filled with love and joy.. until Skylar stepped in to her life. Skylar along with mental health issues and loss, caused the cards to stack against Scarlett. Then Maverick walked back in to Scarletts life. So many truths that neither Scarlette nor Maverick knew existed slowly unravel to reveal more heartbreak and potential healing. This was a slow burn but well worth the wait.
This second chance standalone is told in dual first person POV and will have you feeling all the emotions! There are trigger warnings so check those first.
I LOVE i.s.a. bella’s writing style so much. I love that she isn’t afraid to talk about mental health and the effects it has on not just the person, but the loved ones around them.
I loved Scarlett, her son and Maverick. I loved that through everything they all went through, they could still get their HEA. The support that Scarlett has is amazing, not everyone who battles with their mental health is that lucky. I loved that Maverick finally took the steps he needed to accept his feelings for Scarlett and finally show that he can be there for her.
The emotions I felt while reading is what made me love this book even more. I love when I can become so invested in a story that I feel like I’m experiencing it instead of reading it, and this book didn’t disappoint. I’m so excited to read more of her work!
There are too many things that didn’t work for me. - the heroine is diagnosed with bipolar disorder, but according to her behavior I think it’s more a dysphoria or cyclothimia than bipolarism. She has sudden depression bouts but I don’t see any maniacal signs. She’s more a borderline to me. Anyway. She’s under medication. She has suicidal tendencies. Basically she’s a mess. Her older brother and her mother always care for her and also the hero who’s her brother bff. She has a crush on him of course. But he knows she off limits because she’s six years younger, so of course when she’s 14-15 he’s an adult and she’s jailbait. But apparently her half sister, that her father had outside marriage, is not off limits since the hero makes out with her and basically is always with her during the book. The half sister is awful, but the hero doesn’t seem to realize it, even if both the heroine, her brother, and basically every friends of theirs, think she’s a nasty jealous bitch, but the hero is often defending her, and we don’t know why since besides making out with her he doesn’t want her. Really? - the heroine brother dies apparently of suicide, after his girlfriend is found in bed with his father. Eeeeeeh. Yes. During the funeral the half sister reveals she’s expecting the hero’s child. The heroine after some days attempts suicide. The hero saves her, she rejects him and sends him his way. - five years later he’s a movie star or something like that. Really? It was never explained that part, so it was quite a jump realizing that both him and the evil half sister works as actors, and are supposedly a couple. So what. The hero decided to be an actor and the half sister followed him? Oh, no child since she had a miscarriage. Mmmm. The truth is that they are not a couple, never have been and the hero now decides he wants to go home and take care of the heroine. - the heroine has a four year old child. I was hoping she had some boyfriend but nope. Not even that.so while the hero tries to win the heroine affection now that she’s not jailbait anymore, we learn that she’s been drugged and raped during a party. And she tried to call the hero but he refused to talk to her and closed the conversation. She also heard her half sister’s voice. - the hero manages to win the heroine affection and goes public with their relationship, but rumors of her rape come out and the man who raped the heroine tries to kill her. - basically it was always the half sister. She was jealous of her father’s family since he abandoned her and her mother to be with his real family, so she wanted them all dead. She murdered her half brother, that did not commit suicide, paid the man who raped the heroine, was never pregnant because the hero never had sex with her and drugged the gf and her own father to fake their affair. She even paid the heroine boss to fire her. And of course she leaked the rumor about the heroine rape. At this point I was laughing so hard I couldn’t even stand. Because, ok it’s fiction, but enough is enough. Oh, evil half sister is killed by cops when she tried to escape. She also answered the hero’s phone when the heroine called him and the hero never saw her call. Ok, enough. - there’s a secret child from the heroine brothers gf, because she was preggo at the time of the fake affair. - basically the book is ott in a very ott way. Ok it’s fiction but it’s more soap opera of the 80s than real life. Not even believable. Everyone is crazy here, the heroine, her father, her own brother was depressed and well, the half sister makes dart fener look like mother Theresa. - the book is all over the place, the heroines story during the five years she was separated from the hero are not said, so you wonder how it was. The hero had the time of his life, and did what he wanted so his declaration that he loved the heroine all along, well they sound empty. He had fame. Money. Women. Fun. Not believable. - the whole mental issue was somehow lacking because as I said bipolar doesn’t mean just depression but also maniacal episodes, where a person behaves in a very impulsive, dangerous, and embarrassing way, like going naked in public places, drunk drive, spend a lot of money, try to seduce people of every gender. This kind of things, while the heroine beside some drinking and partying that could be considered quite normal for a teenager, didn’t do anything of those things. She wasn’t even promiscuous that is the first thing about mania. Disphoria is more likely. -about safety the book is unsafe and double standards. The hero had women while the heroine apparently didn’t have a lot of sex life beside the rape. And this is a mistake because bipolar are notorious for their promiscuity. - the hero. I couldn’t even hate him. He’s a ghost. Personality free. He wants so much to help the heroine but he ends siding with the evil half sister. For years. I found him weak, uninteresting, passive. He should be the good guy but if you just stay there and watch what happens around you you’re not good you’re weak. - the angst should have been good, but the story is too ott for me to be able to empathize with the characters.

Ms. Bella knows how to pull readers into the emotions of her characters. She writes about their mental issues so well that you would swear that she has been through them herself. Scarlett, Scar, her older brother, Seth, and next door neighbor, Maverick, become fast friends. Scar has a few mental issues and Seth has always looked after her despite being six years older. Mav stepped right on in with the same fierce protectiveness. The boys knew how to calm Scar when her world was spiraling out of control.
Things got off kilter when Seth and Scar's half sister moved in with them for her senior year. She did not appreciate that her father lived with them and felt that they were treated well while she was forced to live in poverty. This is like how Skylar saw it. To keep Skylar's focus off of Scar, Mav started spending time with her. Skye took the attention and ran with it. Mav, on the other hand, did not care for Skye but wanted her to leave Scar alone. After a family tragedy, Mav and Scar grew apart.
Five years later, Maverick comes home as movie star, Jace Callahan, and decides he can no longer fight his feelings for Scar. Is Scar ready to let the man that was supposed to be her best friend back into the life she struggled to make for herself? This book will hit readers right in the heart. You will feel every emotion. Ms. Bella is so good that you understand each character motivations. There are a lot of triggers in this book and they are mentioned from the beginning but if you think you can get through them, just know this book is worth it. Beautifully written book that allows readers into a world that most people never experience. Mental illness takes its toll on a family and this book shows just how much.
Grovel = H needs to make up for abandoning the h after her brother, his bff, has died and the H needed to move on with his life. H was suffering but he also never put forth much effort to derail the OW's attacks against the h (which he never really makes up for). Did the H grovel? Eh, not really for the OW as he was very firm and very clear with the OW and everyone else that they (H and OW) were not ever a thing and that a lot of what happened was a result of the evil machinations of the OW.
h sees H with OW = OW always tried to shove it in the h's face that the H is hers (he's not but OW always orchestrates it so that it does appear they are together). OW is hanging on the H at the h's brother's funeral when she makes the announcement that she is pregnant with H's baby (result of drunken ONS that H does not really recall, perhaps not a voluntary encounter?)
OW drama = OW is the half sister of h. Things she did: set her own father up to "cheat" on his wife with the brother's gf, drug her own father to set him up, drugged the gf to set her up with dad, implied but not definitively said that she ended her half brother's life, set up for h to be SA/R, continually insult and demean the h every chance she had, etc. Comeuppance? OW was permanently removed by the cops when she tried to take their pew pew to end the h.
SA/R = see above for how OW set up h to be SA/R and it is also possible that OW SA/R the H but not clear.
h is diagnosed with bipolar and attempts suicide so discussions of mental health and trigger warning.
Wow, what a story! I think I experienced every emotion reading this. I really loved and hated the main characters at different point of the story, but like in life, people make decisions that we don't always agree with and you hope they can get it together and do the right thing. I wanted Maverick (Ricky) to redeem himself so badly after the horrible decisions he made when younger. I was rooting for Scarlett to get through all the garbage thrown her way and get her HEA. My heart broke for the family being manipulated by the half-sister, Skylar, that was just plain evil. Using her own hurt to hurt others. I gasped at revelations that were unveiled and wanted to shout at them sometimes to speak up and end the miscommunication and I loved them for fighting for each other finally when Ricky returned to town after so long after a tragedy and realizing the feeling they have didn't fade and actually seemed to grow stronger over the years and then getting though it all to get the happy ending they should have had so long before. So many ups and downs and all-arounds, but this is true of the other works I have read and loved by this author. This is just brilliantly told and breaks my heart in the best way. There are trigger warnings, so please be aware of those if you have any before diving in to this read.
So I'm left feeling torn with this one. The story is kind of like driving past a car accident. You know you probably shouldn't look, but you're oddly engrossed with staring at it. That's a pretty accurate analogy for this one.
My first issue is the story jumps around, a lot. And while I know the beginning of the chapter indicates how old they are it really doesn't make it any less jarring when you jump from modern day to 10 years earlier.
Second issue the story is crazy, over the top ridiculous with all the plot twists and confusion, yet you find yourself wanting to see how it ends out(see car crash analogy above). The main male character is a total douche, and the main female character is a little too door mat-ish for my taste. I mean if my crush picked my evil half sister over me MULTIPLE times there's no way in hell I'd forgive him. Also the ending was just so far fetched I just couldn't even.
SPOILER TERRITORY YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!...
The fact that this 22 year old girl pulled off drugging 2 people, posing them in bed to make it appear they had sex, and then later murdering a guy is just so ridiculous. I mean at the time she wasn't a movie star and basically had no money so how did she pull it off?

So I literally just finished reading Scar and Mavericks Journey and I’m truly at a loss for words . A Second Chance is genuinely one of the most beautiful and emotional love stories I’ve read rhie year . It’s a journey about love and loss and second chances . It’s filled with angst , humot witty banter , tragedy, secrets , struggles , betrayal, issues with mental health , family , friendships and so much more . From page one I knew I was in trouble , something pulled me to both Mav and Scar like a moth to a flame , the more I got to know them the more I fell in love . Their journey is definitely not all hearts and flowers . In fact it was like being on the wildest ride at the amusement park . A emotional rollercoaster in every way possible. You’ll experience everything from being utterly speechless, to yelling outta pure frustration. Your heart will feel like it’s beating so fast and then bam being crushed with tears streaming down your face . , you’ll be glued to the edge of your seat anticipating what will happen from one second to the next . And you’ll find yourself rooting so freaking hard . I.S.A Bella nailed it and delivered a love story that is unforgettable, unputdownable and quite simply chefs kiss 💋
First check the triggers! They aren’t graphic but this book is overwhelming and I would say dark and twisted.
On that note I loved the book. The author touch’s on a some sensitive subjects the biggest one being mental health. (Bipolar) I love how she shows the truth and how it affects all. It’s hard not to just fall in love with the Mc’s their chemistry is off the chart! Along with the relationship between Scar and Seth her brother. The beginning of the book tore me apart I don’t think I’ve cried as much in a book as I did in this one. I felt it all! And seriously it hurt. The plot takes some serious turns you know Skye is, I want to say well I can’t think of anything nice so you will have to read it!
The book moves at a very fast pace I couldn’t put it down! I highly recommend this book if you’re looking for age gape, crazy awesome chemistry, good palate cleanser (but wild ride with a HEA) grab this book! But make sure to have the tissues close. I don’t often cry. And like I said this one got me.
What an amazing book. This book was full of emotions, triumphs and heartbreak. I would definitely check the trigger warnings but this was a well written book. My heart could not recover for this book. It related home to me. My favorite quote is “"That's what you'd say. You have no idea what it's like to be left behind, alone and abandoned, while your dad starts a new life with a new family across town. It's like being forgotten, like you never mattered, like you were just a temporary inconvenience that he no longer had time for." She took a deep breath and wiped away her tears, her voice shaking with emotion. "You have no idea."” Scar was the perfect example of how our struggles change us but in the end she came out stronger and I loved it. Seth will always be my favorite. Maverick made a few mistakes I feel his age played a huge part in it. He was young and doing what he thought best. Overall I loved this book!

What a outstanding book. From the storyline topics to the character development to the realism of the struggles one has with weaving life with a diagnosis that many don't understand or have no experience with the author brings light to these issues. A connection through life's twist and turns comes out on top. This book has it all, laughable moments, moments you want to cry, moments you want to hug the characters, the moment you want to strangle one of them to. I highly recommend this book. I would give it more stars if I could. I HOPE that people read this book and relate to it and it gives them hope that with work you can be mentally happy no matter the challenge.
I have loved the Beautiful Broken Peices Series by this author and I'm thrilled with this new book. Can't wait to see what is released next. I will be watching her Facebook for updates!
This book wrecked me! I was an emotional basketcase the entire time. I still am, honestly. I'm sitting here trying to put my emotions into words to express how much I loved this story, but I'm still struggling! Scar has my entire heart, and I'm so happy for her and, mostly importantly, how proud I am of her. I lost my best friend to suicide and I can't help but think what she was thinking at the time. She hid so well from me, I wish I didn't live so far away at the time. I will forever be sad I couldn't help her. I honestly can't say enough about this book. To have a glimpse into someone's mind and to see how strong the mind really is.
Seth and Scar were always close for being brother and sister. Scar had Bipolar disorder and Seth was always taking care of her. When Maverick moved in next door, Scar thought she would lose Seth. They all became the best of friends. Then along comes Skylar, the stepsister that Scar and Seth didn't know about. Actually no one really knew about her.
Skylar was a beatch, plan and simple. She was dead set on making Scar and Seth's live a living hell. The lies, decet, death that was on this woman's hands is unthinkable. But Maverick always came through in a promise he made Seth.
The part that stands out the most is how the bipolar issues was dealt with and how the use of therapy can make things better. Loved this book.
Oh I.S.A. Bella, I should know by now when I read your books I'm gonna have my heart strings pulled and bawl my eyes out. This was a FANTASTIC way to end reading all of your books thus far, until more come out. This read was DEFINITELY 15+ STARS IN MY EYES, IDC what anyone says. I connected with some of the same symptoms Scar dealt with, that hit close to my heart. I've never really been diagnosed with anything but take 2 m3d!c@tions that seem to help ease my symptoms, make life liveable. I LOVE Scar and Mavericks story and Love, #SOULMATES I hope you continue their story on in another book. FOREVER TEAM PETERPAN & TINKERBELL. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOUR WRITING AND STORIES CANT WAIT FOR MORE GREAT WORK. 💜🫶💜
A Second Chance showcases Scarlett’s view of the story as she has not been involved much throughout the story. Like the rest of them, Scarlett you shouldn’t have an easy way of going through anything after her brother‘s passing. She did not only lose a brother, but he was her lifeline. Is Maverick coming back a good or bad thing this story. Why would Scarlett want someone who chose her sister over her? But she does apparently and he’s got a lot approving to do to get her to believe he’s sticking around this time. The only nice thing he did admit to her was he felt wrong pursuing her it’s such a young age. Where will the next book take us?
Once again! ISA BELLA did it again! Amazing read!!! The story had many sweet moments that tugged at my heart. I cried, laughed, and wanted to throw my Kindle across the room. The twists and turns were awesome! Even if they may seem wild, what's a good fiction book without drama? I never saw the ending coming. I love how the author addressed serious life struggles and wrote them beautifully. The story has its triggers, but overall, I really, really enjoyed this book. I read it in all one setting. I am looking forward to more books from the author.
Scarlett's story is a complex one, navigating around her rollercoaster of emotions with bipolar. You get to realise which way someone with this condition thinks. Scar's relationship with her brother Seth, and his best friend Maverick are amazing. They both try to protect her from some of the harsh realities of life.
Not wanting to give any of the story away, there are a lot of events that would test anyone, but with Scar's condition make her life even more difficult to navigate. Fabulously written, you are pulled into Scar's world.
There are a lot of events in this story with one big plot twist that you don't see coming. Well worth a read! I can't wait to see if there are any spin offs from this story.
the timeline was a bit off for me, first Maverick did not like skylar that much in the next chapter they were involved. It was all very tragic, but still sometimes I thought I missed something. Scar wasn't my favorite, the way she rejected Maverick all the time, if it was me I would be gone a long time, the way he tried to get on her good side was admirable. The plot at the end was a bit far fetched but what the heck it's romance and fantasy. All in all an ok dramatic emotional story with some hang ups.
Beautiful story! One of my fav from the author. The emotions put into his book were insane. It felt so real and raw. I love Maverick and, oh, my little Shaun. How adorable he was when it came to his mom, Scar. This book has it all: angst, drama, tragedy, family, friendship, and love. I highly recommend this book.
One of the most emotional books I have ever read. So many elements touched upon in this story, you could just feel your heart tearing in half. Scar, Seth, and Maverick's journey was all over the place, but the highs and lows were heartfelt and so well written you could imagine being there. I thought this book was incredible and I'd say this author has a new fan.
This was an ok book to read. At first I was so confused by the countless flashbacks and different age scenarios. Scar and Maverick were a lovely mix and it was emotional going through Seth’s death. Although I have to admit, Skylar being the villain didn’t come as a complete shock to me, cause she was awful. An ok book to read.

This book touches on mental health issues, so it was hard for me to read this is some parts. I can relate to some of the mental health issues in this book so I can relate. In some parts You will get so frustrated that you will want to scream, holler and throw stuff. This book is filled with angst , tragedy, secrets , struggles , betrayal, issues with mental health ,and so much more.
I like the authors writing style and world building. The dual point of view within this book was needed. Concerning the charectors it was hard to like the main male Maverick because of his behavior towards Scarlett the female main. It was a relief that he got his act together around end of the book.
Isabella has done it again. A story about the hardships life throws our way. But Scar is tough. Having had her share of loss and heartache. She struggles on. This is a very emotional and heartwarming story about what we get dealt in this life and how we deal with what we cant control. Written as only I.S.A. Bella can do.
