But during a senior year party, everything changes. The three boys who’ve taunted and bullied me for almost my entire time at Pemberton University are hellbent on giving me my ultimate punishment.
Punishment for what? I don’t know. But once I’ve paid for whatever they think I’ve done, they’re not planning on letting me go, no matter how hard I fight against them.
But I’m not as weak as they think I am. They’ve promised to make me regret ever being born, but I can do the same to them.
In fact, I’ll do everything I can to ruin them the way they’ve ruined me.
Ruined is a dark reverse harem bully romance that takes place in a college setting. It's the first in a set of interconnected standalones but can be read by itself. Please heed the content note at the front of the book.
This started out really strong but unfortunately it quickly devolved. There wasn’t a whole lot going on other than smut and from the description I was expecting it to be pretty plot heavy, especially when you consider the length. It felt like there were so many loose ends as well? I have a lot of questions leftover. Again with the length I would have thought that it would have been wrapped up nicely and a bit more fleshed out.
The characters were okay. There wasn’t really much chemistry or connection there and I personally didn’t feel connected to any of the characters. It was several years of miscommunication followed by revenge. The bully scenes felt rushed and a bit over the top almost every time.
However all of that being said. This is not a bad book. It was just very not what I was expecting. I went into this expecting a very plot heavy dark romance and was given a spicy dark romance. If you go into this expecting 90% smut honestly you’ll have a great time.
I feel like I have to preface this review with a disclaimer: I love dark romances and bully romances - so my dislike of this book does not stem from this.
My dislike for this book stems from the following:
1. The pacing. First we see our FMC meet the guys at college, then we see one bullying incident each year, then we get to the present day. Already, I think the author has failed us by having our FMC meet the guys at the start of the story and only know them for 2 weeks before the bullying starts, unprompted from her perspective.
It would have been more powerful if they knew each other for longer and had an existing connection before the “betrayal” occurred- but since that doesn’t happen, we as readers have no reason to feel for the guys or even care about them from the start.
2. Our FMC’s abnormal trauma response. Athelia has been abused and assaulted by her professor for more than three years. He has blackmailed her and tortured her on top of sexually assaulting her regularly for the entirety of her time in college. And yet, she has absolutely no normal trauma responses from this? She doesn’t flinch or fear other men, and she doesn’t have any hesitation early on in the book about being sexually involved with an unknown masked man, despite the fact that she’s been groomed by her abuser to not even look at another man. It doesn’t make sense!
And I’m definitely not saying I need our FMC to be a total weak victim, but I’d like some realism to the awful reality and trauma she’s suffered. The fact that we get NONE of that is not only a shame, but kind of offensive.
3. The lack of a satisfying conclusion to our main bad guy. Our rapist professor is killed pretty early on and nothing really comes of him, nor are there any consequences for his murder in this story. It’s lackluster at best and poor writing at worst.
4. The absolute lack of any explanation or real exploration of the guys and their job. We don’t need TOO many details but we need some sense of what’s happening with this considering it’s brought up so many times. Near the end, one of their jobs goes bad. We don’t figure out what went wrong or who they really work for or anything. There’s no purpose other than to create a tense moment where one of the men is hurt.
5. The spicy scenes. I can admit that I am NOT a girlie who loves humiliation & degradation, but I can usually handle it in books. But this book? We get a lot of spicy scenes and they are all HEAVY on the degradation, with only one single short scene near the end being even remotely normal or sweet. It’s just too much for me, especially when all these guys have done for years is bully her to the point of making her suicidal. It’s too much negativity for me, not to mention all of the CNC & dubious consent nearing NC we get.
6. The lack of a plot. Nothing really happens? I guess you could argue that the plot is Thelia making the guys fall for her so she can break them, but this isn’t focused on enough and her big villain moment is just leaving. It’s so lacking any real angst that it may as well be omitted. I’m also not really a big fan of one of the guys attempting suicide being what brings everyone together without any real exploration of his pain prior to this or after this.
7. Haven? The author is obviously trying to lay the foundation for a second book following Haven’s story, but the way Haven disappears and makes cryptic comments that we get ZERO clarification on doesn’t work. We don’t need to know everything, but we need enough of an idea to want to come back.
Overall, I think this book is lacking a lot and it’s definitely one of my least favorite reads of 2024 so far.
Full RTC. The spice was pretty hot if you're into the kinks here , but the plot was so frustrating. 😭 The reason they bully her is so flimsy. Then when they groveled, one of them immediately expected her to forgive them after YEARS of bullying and the main abuse she went through?? Honestly, I'm more excited for Haven's potential story.
Before I start, I would like to remind everyone who wants to read Ruined to check the trigger warnings. We can't repeat it enough, dark romance is for an adult and mature audience, and this book addresses quite dark themes within some characters or sexual scenes.
Now for my review... I must admit that I don't really know how to rate this book and it's at times like this that I get frustrated by the lack of .5/.75 on goodreads. For me, this book is closer to 3.75/5 rather than 4, which is still quite good in my eyes since I see potential and something that most of the readers will enjoy to read. But.. I've been reading dark romance almost daily for three years, few things make me uncomfortable, I don't mind bullying romance and I'm kinda frustrated with Ruined.
I appreciated E. Bishop's writing style. This is an aspect that remains important to me and given the length of certain books I need to immediately click with the way the author writes and describes things. I admit, I had trouble with Athelia for certain reasons that I will probably explain later in my review but I liked being able to read the POVS of Wes, Kellan and Cal, they complement each other in their friendship, in their dark sides while being different at the same time, and I love that. The setting of the story remains quite classic in dark romance but appreciable when you want to read a reverse harem/bullying romance.
But at the same times I was just frustrated while reading Ruined, starting with the lack of real relationship between the characters between the start of the story and the start of the bullying. Maybe I would have taken the reason behind the behavior of the three MMCS a little more seriously if they had known Athelia for longer or if we had witnessed what happened between them during the two weeks itself even if absolutely nothing justifies their behavior. Because clearly... we end up with a girl who arrives in college, who fucks with three guys who are suddenly obsessed with her and who then act as if she killed their entire families for a reason which remains... ridiculous when we know what's really happening in Athelia's life. It almost becomes difficult to feel a certain... empathy or connection with Cal, Kellan and Wes because the difference between what they think/do and what is happening is so surreal.
I might be a little harsh but apart from the bullying scenes, a lot of self-loathing, lack of communication and sexual scenes I had the impression that not much was happening in the story. I have no problem with smut, degradation or the kinks exploited in the story (probably because at 27 I have a certain distance from it in my readings) but I would say that too much sex kills sex, and that this more or less put aside a plot that could have been interesting in the sense that we still have this whole story with and around the professor who could have be exploited in more depth, with the consequences of murder for example. Or Athelia's trauma responses. The lack of trauma response leaves me speechless. All victims of abuse and aggression/SA obviously do not react in the same way and I don't want to dwell on this point forever since everyone will form their own opinion but between the repeated SA from her teacher and the bullying she suffered from the three MMCS for three or four years, I expected something else.
I think these are the few points that made me more or less enjoy reading this book. There are good aspects, interesting things and potential if a next book is planned and I know that some readers will find what they like in this book but there are also things which in the end seem a little too surreal or illogical even in a dark romance.
This book (and this author!) truly has potential. Ruined was an exciting and intense read, with moments that genuinely had me on the edge of my seat. So much happens, and the stakes get really high, which made it hard to put down at times.
The character development is one of the strongest aspects for me. Cal, Kellan & Wes completely won me over, but Cal especially stole my heart. I’m honestly obsessed with him!
While there were moments where the phrasing or descriptions pulled me out of the story a little (I suspect English may not be the author’s first language), this didn’t take away too much from the overall enjoyment. It’s a minor thing in the grand scheme of the story, and I still found myself fully immersed in the world and the emotions.
I have a really good feeling about Book 2 >> I’m confident it’s going to be even better. E. Bishop, thank you so much for the opportunity to read this. I absolutely can’t wait for Haven’s book!
E. Bishop writes in such a captivating, entrancing way. I was hooked from the very first page and devoured this book in a single breath. Ruined is the perfect storm of spice and plot, pulling you deep into its emotional grip and refusing to let go.
You hate to love the guys and love to hate them. Wes, Cal, and Kellen are the kind of men you hate yourself for needing. They are unapologetically dangerous, devastatingly magnetic, and utterly unforgettable.
This book hurt, healed, and haunted me all at once. I was ruined by Ruined and I can’t wait to fall even harder in the next book.
E. Bishop just earned a permanent place on my dark romance radar.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
★3.5/5! I wanted a dark why choose bully romance and i in fact got just that! definitely check trigger warnings, this book isn’t for everyone but personally i liked it!
Enjoyed the characters, Athelia the lil freaky girl, Cal my cute dominant softie (kinda), Kellan the one who enjoys hurting others -slayyy and Wes the biggest asshole to exist! Not going to lie, not the biggest fan of Wes but the other three are a YESSS
One thing that pissed me off was when they finally stopped bullying her, one of them expected her to forgive them straight away and got mad when she didn’t? boy you bullied her for 3 whole years back the fuck up.
Overall wish we had some more cute/sweet moments and more in detailed things about the guys/plots BUT it was still an okay book! Looking forward to Havens book WOOO
Small Spoiler? I’m sorry but Athelia manipulation revenge plan was everything, something about women getting revenge is hot. "𝐈 𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐊𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐧'𝐬 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐬 𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐨𝐟𝐭, 𝐚𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐤𝐢𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐲 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝. 𝑯𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒆𝒕𝒆𝒍𝒚 𝒇𝒆𝒍𝒍 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒊𝒕." SLAYYY LOVE HER FOR THAT!
"You haunted me Athelia. I couldn't even escape you in my dreams. So no, I wasn't angry. I was tormented..." - Wes
Athelia finds herself in the grasp of many men, all of whom want something from her and are willing to destroy her to get it. When she meets Cal, Wes and Kellan, she feels like she lucked out and found a place she might belong. However this all changes two weeks into freshman year when she is accused of choosing another man over the three guys.
Over the next four years, they are determined to torment her for choosing someone else over them, and yet her torment doesn't end with them. Four years of blackmail, abuse, and sick pranks later, she finds herself in their clutches once again. The truth of her betrayal comes forth and the men are left with nothing but shame and guilt for their actions towards her and begging for forgiveness. All four seek vengeance against the one man who savagely tore them apart.
The general story and idea is great, and the writing and dialogue are executed well. I do however feel as though the plot fell a bit flat and was very surface level per say. I would have liked to see more depth and true development of the characters, especially considering the length of the book.
If you are in it for RH smut, you'll love this; however if you like plot heavy books, this may not be for you.

*I received an ARC and this is an honest and voluntary review*
This is how you write a bully romance, these men should absolutely be irredeemable but you just can’t help but have a soft spot for them in the end!
Wes and Cal immediately see Athelia the first day she moves into her college dorm room. What Athelia thinks a simple, kind gesture to help her move her things upstairs is definitely much more. After they invite her to a party, where she also meets Kellen, she’s ready to leave until they ask her stay…and they literally fulfill all her fantasies. 2 weeks goes by and everything is great until one day they all of a sudden hate her, and even go as far as shoving her into a fountain. This definitely all stems from lack of communication, and honestly shows how vulnerable young adults are to pressure from authority figures.
The next 3 years continue on much of the same way, Athelia is at her breaking point, between them, and her professor Athelia’s will to live is quickly crumbling. Until one Halloween of nightmares or possibly the best night of her life.
Athelia can’t truly forgive everything they’ve done to her, even though they’re willing to kill for her, so her revenge plot forms in her head. They definitely got more than they bargained for with Athelia, and revenge is something she does best.
Athelia has a praise and degradation kink and these men know exactly how she likes it. She can use them without catching feelings right and then throw them to the curb…or can she…
I binge read this, absolutely check your triggers, this is dark! This is a true bully, lovers to enemies, to lovers, to….get where I’m going here. These men are irredeemable the bullying is so bad, they tie her to a tree in the woods and that’s just the start…I ate this up however. All the red flags were definitely blurring green however! If you don’t like a bully trope don’t read this, this is toxic heavy bullying, all these men are honestly irredeemable…unless you’re blind to all the red flags 😈 My only critique is I wish we got more of their relationship in the beginning, it felt rushed and I didn’t have a connection to the MMCs until quite a few chapters in because we didn’t see any of the relationship building. It was them one night and then cuts to two weeks later and they hate her, overall I was still able to connect with them but it took a good portion of the book to do so.
This is a true bully romance so if that trope isn’t for you, this book won’t be for you! That being said, these boys took revenge to a whole other level! There is lots of spice and degradation. Wes is the unhinged bad boy, Cal is the damaged sweetheart and Kellen is a mix of both. Athelia drove me crazy though 😂. That being said, I’m really looking forward to reading Haven and Colton’s story!
I’m a die hard dark college bully fan and I sue this up! E Bishop added so many of the typical dark romance tropes but there was such a good balance with everything that nothing felt overdone. This was ridiculously out of control spicy but I felt like there was a good balance with spice. The bullying was great, these guys were pretty mean and although we didn’t witness a daily bullying the reader we still able to see how traumatized Athelia was. They had a good back story with plot without it being overboard with descriptions. This kept my attention the entire time and I was hooked from the first two pages, they had so much going on that it never got dull or boring it was just a roller coaster ride the entire time.

I wanted to hear you scream.” - Kellan _________________________
HOLY SHITTT! Wow. This is definitely a dark book, and trigger heavy. Please tread lightly, your mental health matters… seriously. But - if you love all the red flags, especially when it comes to spice… this is for you. ‘Cause these boys are SAVAGES. I 10/10 recommend. _________________________
❤️ “She’s exactly the way I lie her - Crying, pissed, and a fucking mess. The only thing that would make it better is if she was wearing makeup so I could ruin it.” - Wes _________________________ I am RUINED (see what I did there?!) This book took me on an emotional roller coaster. Seriously… For the first half of the book I hated (sorta) the guys and felt for Athelia, and the second half I hated her and felt for the guys. But, I had a soft spot for Cal the entire time. Ugh. Seriously. My heart was in my stomach for majority of this book. When Thelia told the guys what she was going through, I had tears in my eyes. But, clearly I have my own issues because I hated her plan and didn’t wanna see my boys get paybacks. _________________________ ❤️ “This is exactly what I’ve always wanted - to be fucked like a slut and then treated like a princess.” _________________________ Listen… My boys are dirty dirty boys, and my girl loved it (even when she didn't wanna!) The spice starts in the first chapter, and it only gets better from there. I was here for all of the dub/cnc that she was subjected to … ‘cause YUM. I don’t know what that’s saying about me.. I probably need therapy, but don’t we all? _________________________ ❤️ “Athelia Harper may have hurt us, but we still can’t get enough of her.” - Cal _________________________
If you’ve made it this far, I was given an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion and review… and I highly… highly recommend you check this out.
Bully romances are usually nonsensical anyways that requires a suspension of belief but this one was a bit much. It’s a MFMM why choose in that the guys don’t hook up with each other, but they only hook up with the girl. Athelia meets Wes, Cal, and Kellan before freshman year at college starts and after 2 weeks, they decide she’s done something so unforgivable they proceed to bully her for the next FOUR YEARS.
They barely know each other and it’s all just asking a bit too much to ask me to believe they should all be together and they have nothing better to do than torture a girl they barely know. Maybe if this was a PNR omegaverse book and they had a soulmate thing going on, MAYBE. But as it is, I’m not buying it.
The author does provide content warnings at the beginning of the book but it really shouldn’t be understated that the power imbalance between a professor/student and rape are big parts of this book (not between the FMC and her guys but another guy entirely).
The CIA subplot is silly because the author never fully commits to it and in the end you just have 3 guys with a bloodlust for murder doing shady jobs with no training for allegedly the CIA, who seems to operate like Soviet Russia in the 80s. Specifically, like the tv show, The Americans.
This is also doing a lot of heavy lifting trying to get you to care about the setup for the next book in the series regarding Athelia’s roommate and best friend Haven. I don’t know if I care enough at this point in the story to say if I would even want to read her book.
After the big reveal where the guys find out they bullied Athelia for all those years for nothing, they basically become super nice and it’s less dark romance with the characters and their relationship at this point and more externally dark romance. I don’t know if they can ever grovel enough to Athelia to make up for what they’ve put her through. But I don’t care to read on.
Wow. This book is up there with the darkest books I've ever read!
* ABSOLUTE MUST READ TRIGGER WARNINGS * If it's not for you, move on. Don't rate negatively because you don't like the trigger warnings.
The spice levels in this book were 🔥! Insanely spicy! Bishop did not hold back and sure af did not lie about a single trigger. The spice scenes were done really well and the writing throughout the entire story was done well. The only reason why it's not a complete 5 star rating from me as while the story and the plot was right, the events and timeline didn't run as smoothly for me as would a top rated book.
Like I said, HEAVY on the dark. And this is really freaking dark! It was quite a fun read 😆
470 ish pages Dark Bully Romance RH LOTS of triggers please check
The book started strong and keeps going from there. It doesn't dawdle or get boring at any point. I loved the pace and tenor of the book and although some not the "triggers" in the book aren't my usual cup of tea they went well with the story so I found I enjoyed it a lot more than I normally would.
If you came for the spice, you’re in the right place and if you came for the degradation kink, you’re absolutely in the right place bc damnnnn these men did not hold back on that. I have to admit this is not really something I enjoy reading but the FMC loved it and it was fun to watch her come out of her shell and be comfortable in the bedroom, especially with these 3 hot men doing everything she ever wanted to her.
I have to say though that the time jumps at the beginning disconnected me a bit from the story. It started out strong when she met them on move in day but after one interaction, it jumped from one scene per college year. It left the characters and the story a bit disconnected to me, but I got a little bit more into it later. I sadly didn’t love it but I enjoyed reading it and I’ll read Haven’s book next, I’m curious about her.
But, there were a few unanswered questions throughout the book. I wish there was more information about the guys’ job. They don’t even know who they work for, is that not something they would want to know after a while? And how did Wes’ dad died, was there something more to it or just the job? I think there should’ve been more of an explanation of their “job” and who was Char and who she worked for. And Thelia being bi? That was dropped but there was no indication of it at all in any part of the book and it was just an unnecessary information tbh. Cal’s childhood trauma was also just quickly mentioned, no in depth conversation about it, even though it was a bit obvious what happened, especially his reaction to Athelia being slapped but still, no background on it. Anyway, these are just a few things I remember now that I wish the author had taken more time to go into.
I do really like reading bvlly romance but this one wasnt for me. The pacing was just kind off cause its a bit rushed for me in the beginning and to think these men are “obsessed” about her at first well couldnt really get her side of the story and just started bvllying her based on video shown? *shakes head* i didnt feel like their connection between the characters and the time skip just didnt make sense for them to bvlly her? For 4 years? I totally understand this is fictional, but still it has to make sense a bit 😅 Thats just me.
I dont know what to say honestly i dont usually go this far to dnf but i was really curious as to how the men would respond if they finally found out the situation about the fmc.
I feel sorry for the fmc i know she has a bestie and tho i wouldnt understand her pain fully. I just couldnt fathom the situation she is in and to go on for that long for so many years i couldnt imagine myself in her shoes, respectfully. She deserves better to be honest and the world. 🥹
She was very resilient but my heart really goes to her. The men idk 🤷🏻♀️ maybe they will get their redemption arc but i just stopped where im at cause im too frustrated to go on at this point. Not for me. Sorry 🥹

She's Wes's soul, Cal's baby and Kellan's (ma) belle. The book is a dark romance and I would recommend you to read the trigger warnings before starting!
Wes has the cutest nickname for Thelia but I had a hard time connecting with his character. Maybe it was because what happened throughout the book, I don't know but there was no connection. Then we have Kellan, I could understand why Thelia would forgive him but he could have Grovelled more (in my opinion😁). At last but not least whe have Cal. He was so sweet and was the only one who deserved forgiveness. I couldn't really feel his emotions while reading the book. The other characters felt distant to me.
The end of the book leaves me with some questions and I know the questions about Haven will probably be solved in her book. But it would have been nice to see all the questions about Thelia being explained. Overall I liked the book, there could have been some more suspense since the action and climax wasn't really at the end of the book. I'm looking forward to Haven's book 😍
Thank you E. Bishop for taking a chance and using a secret name to write under because I LOVED THIS NOVEL!!! From page one I was hooked and stayed up way too late to finish th last hundred pages tonight darn it! WELL worth it! At 1st I thought her payback was going to be over the top like some reviews said but nope, after all they did to her (the triggers are REAL people!!), they deserved it and more. She needed to go through it to get to the other side. The steam in this book was straight up smüt and not just your run of the mill kind, oh heck no! The levels were off the chart and written in such a kïnky and descriptive way that I was literally fanning myself. Hot AF! The amount was great too, there was no skimping on the yummy stuff and you’d think the story would be too long but nope again. We got fleshed out characters, back stories, and dynamics all detailed within these pages, bringing the characters to life and allowing us to really explore who they were. All in all I loved this book and even though this isn’t technically a new author apparently, she is new to ME and I can’t WAIT for Havens book!!
This book had me in a chokehold from start to finish! Althelia and all of the trials her and Wes, Cal, and Kellan go through are meant to tear you apart. Ruin you and put you back together slowly. It’s tense from the moment you start.
This book is amazing and if I could give it more stars I would.
Read this book if you are looking for something to rip your heart out and make you believe in love. Morally black men are where it’s at! Gahhhh!
I’m so glad I got to experience this book before it before it got to the general public. Receiving the ARC copy was the best thing! I WILL be purchasing a copy for my bookshelf.

*I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest review*
This book was a mixed bag. I really appreciated the author’s thorough and honest content tags at the start of the book so that I knew what I was getting myself into, since this story does get a bit dark. As a reader who enjoys plot in an equal measure to smut, though, this book did fall a bit flat in the plot department. The story was easy enough to follow and made sense at the surface level, but it often felt rushed or a little too unbelievably perfect. For other readers though, this higher ratio of (well written) smut to (not so well written) plot might strike the perfect balance, especially if dark romance is your thing.
I really enjoyed this book. If you want something on the spicer dark side, then this book is for you. If you like a dark, why choose, bully romance then I recommend giving this book a read!
It took me a couple of chapters, but I truly became hooked in this. The guys make such a good trio and I’m so glad Athelia managed to get her own back.
I do wish we dove more into the plot and was able to peak into all of their lives a little bit more. Especially learning more of the back story around Cal and Kellan a little bit more.
Overall, absolutely fab book and a great opener to the authors world! I can’t wait to read more of her work.
Ruined is an intense, intense story. Be sure to check the trigger warnings before you venture off into Athelia, Cal, Wesley and Kellan journey.
"Pemberton University, the student population may be small, but that’s because they only accept the best of the best—and the richest of the richest."
What they don't say is there's the meanest of mean there too! There's nothing sweet, gentle and kind about their relationship very often so keep that in mind. It's a dark and as I said, intense, lengthy book and one heckuva rollercoaster of a ride.
“ My heart—my soul—is drawn to you with so much force that even gods couldn’t stand between us.” This book is intense, raw, and dark. This was the first time reading this author and I will for sure be looking into more books. If you are easily triggered you may want to keep scrolling. Check the TW. This book is a dark RH and it does get pretty dark with the degradation and spicy spice.

The chokehold I was in from chapter one was unreal. This was so amazing. 🤩 dark bully romance with “touch her and die” to wrap it all up 🖤
I couldn’t help myself as I raced through this baby to find out what happened, and honestly I never really saw it all coming which makes it better. Wes, Cal and Kellen were perfection 💋 Athelia threw me for a loop in the best of ways!
I liked this one, but I just felt like some parts weren't as detailed as they should've been? I feel a big part of the plot was just taken care of in one fell swoop, easy..and it should've been rougher? Or maybe linked to other parts to make it darker.
Either way, I did enjoy reading this one but maybe I'm more into darker than dirtier?
Nice dark bully romance. Lots of triggers. Long read but had a lot of everything in. The only thing I'd probably change would be how the teacher got handled. Kind of anticlimactic. Would have liked more build up I guess. But good book!
