Rate this book

Series: The Worthingtons #5
Publication Date: 5/29/18

Men are just so clueless when it comes to love and relationships with women. Geoffrey, Earl of Harrington, first son, and heir to the Marquis of Markham, is evidently the king of clueless. He just assumes that, because he has expressed an interest, the lady will be likewise interested. He has his list of qualifications for a bride and when he finds one who meets those qualifications and his sight is set on her – he just expects to get her. He has absolutely no clue – none, nada, zip – that they wouldn’t want him. He has no desire to fall in love – he has friends who married for love and they are either in agony or ecstasy. No, he just wants someone who meets his qualifications and it would be nice if there was a bit of passion between them. It really isn’t that he’s conceited, it is just that he is clueless. He thinks that the ladies will have the same attitude that he does – you find someone with the right qualifications, and you make a match. It is the business of a relationship. That attitude has cost him one woman (The Marquis and I (The Worthingtons #4)). Will he realize that he needs help before his time runs out? He has to have a bride very quickly now that he lost the last potential candidate – he only has a matter of weeks to pursue someone, marry her, and leave for the continent to assume his new diplomatic position. You just have to love him because he really is so clueless and naïve. I loved watching him grow and learn!

Lady Elizabeth Turley has been the overlooked jewel of the season. Her more beautiful, vivacious friends have garnered all of the attention and now it is the end of the season and she has no prospects. There is one man who caught her attention (Harrington), but he was completely focused on her friend Charlotte all season – now, Charlotte is marrying someone else. Elizabeth is both interested and hesitant when her brother invites Harrington to tea so they can be introduced. She’s interested because she’s been attracted to him all season and she’s hesitant because – if he loved her friend Charlotte and she married someone else, how can he be ready to love again so soon? Yes, you have it, Lady Elizabeth wants a love match. Since men find it hard to say those words, how can she tell if he loves her or not?

Both Geoff and Elizabeth follow the advice given to them by others and they are off on a merry chase. I love Geoff’s reactions to his grandmother’s list of things for him to do in order to secure Elizabeth’s hand. True to character – he looks at the list, picks a couple of easy things and ignores the rest. Then, he is surprised when that doesn’t work. Finally, though, he does embrace the list and wins the fair maiden. That doesn’t mean all is well in the neighborhood.

After Elizabeth overhears a conversation between Geoff and his father (after the marriage), she comes to believe that Geoff doesn’t love her and will not love her. Now, what is she to do? Well, she follows advice from her mother-in-law and her grandmother-in-law – who both had the same problem with their husbands. If you want to know how well that works, you’ll just have to read the book!

The largest portion of the book takes place in England with Geoff and Elizabeth dancing around each other. But, the latter portion deals with them traveling to Brussels just before the battle of Waterloo. Those were some perilous times and Quinn’s scene-setting is brilliant. You feel you are right there with the tension and the threat of Napoleon overrunning you at any point. It is also amazing to see what a household had to go through to re-locate during that time. It certainly wasn’t like just calling the moving company and off you go.

Elizabeth really came into her own once they were traveling. You will come to admire her very much. She is calm, caring, concerned, organized, and brave beyond belief. She really is what a heroine should be.

I really liked all of the secondary characters in the book. Well, all of them except Elizabeth’s father. He only had a small part to play in the book and he was mostly very melancholy and still, years later, consumed with the loss of his wife. However, his absence left the door open for us to meet and come to admire Elizabeth’s brother – Gavin. He’s delightful and I can surely see a book in his future! Another one I’d like to see a book for is Lord Littleton – he needs to fall in love and have his HEA. 

This is excellently written – as are all of this author’s novels. The plot is well thought out and the scene setting is perfect.

I have read more than one review mentioning that this book is boring. I do not disagree that it is slower than its predecessors in the series. I would not recommend reading this as a standalone. However, after reading all the books in the series leading up to this one, I had already been introduced to both the hero and the heroine. I did not mind that it was more traditional in the story of courting and marrying with less excitement.

How I enjoyed this one .
It’s sort of a rundown on her part of how best to attract and keep a husband .
On his part it’s a comedy of errors, The poor guy can’t catch a break .
He lacks knowledge of the fairer sex , when her does catch one he’s not sure what to do with her,
All culminating in a marriage to a woman who loves him , but he can’t do anything right , and doesn’t know what he’s done wrong .
She’s great , she loves him but she’s going to make him pay for his seemingly lack of feelings and thought.
All this and traveling to a new country during a war too .
What could possibly go wrong .
Ella’s new book is Great , highly entertaining and enlightening as to how things were done and how they lived in this era .
I received an advanced copy of this book and chose to submit a review

description

I have been enjoying the tight-knit family in the Worthingtons series, even though it seems I have missed a book along the way. It's not necessary to read these in order, particularly if you are starting with You Never Forget Your First Earl. In this book, we have exhausted our Worthingtons, and it seems and we are going with a friend of the family instead of one of the Worthington brood.

Our hero in this installment is Geoffrey, Earl of Harrington, who had planned to marry Lady Charlotte Worthington in a previous book. Geoffrey was not looking for a love match, but instead was looking for a lady to tick all the "perfect wife" boxes to compliment his diplomatic career. When he loses out on Charlotte, Geoffrey must find a replacement wife as soon as possible, or risk losing his position with Sir Charles Stuart. I'm not really sure why it was necessary for Geoffrey to have a wife to be qualified for this position... his superior didn't even bring his wife along to Brussels where they were expected to live. Anywho, when Geoffrey decides that Charlotte's friend Elizabeth Turley is his best option, he sets out to woo and win her to the role of helpmate. As businesslike and unfeeling as Geoffrey sounds from this description, he really wasn't. I liked him as a hero. He was somewhat oblivious about love and feelings, but his actions spoke louder than his words. It was probably easier for us to see as the reader because we were privy to his inner thoughts.

Elizabeth Turley doesn't seem to mind overmuch that she was playing second fiddle to her friend Charlotte, but she decides that, overall, she wants a love match. So while Geoffrey is trying to bring her up to scratch as the perfect diplomat's wife, Elizabeth is looking for signs that he is in love. I did like Elizabeth and I thought she was perfectly paired with our hero. They complimented each other quite well. However, I felt like she took bad advice at times, and she could have communicated better with our hero.

The relationship between these two was copasetic - they got along great at every turn for most of the book. Though while I was reading, I had this sense of impending doom that dragged on and on forever. And when doom came knocking, I wasn't satisfied with how things played out. I prefer to have better communication between our hero and heroine. Luckily, this portion was short compared to the rest of the story where they rubbed along really well. They had some good chemistry as well, and their intimate interactions came across as sweetly steamy.

Overall, I enjoyed the story. From the blurb though, I expected more danger and suspense. The story was fairly mild for the first 85% or so. Then we got to what I felt like was a contrived plot device that threw me out of the story.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from the publisher, Kensington.

Love will find a way!

This novel went to a place I didn't expect. It developed not only an interesting romantic plot but provided extra fascination by describing Brussels at the time of Waterloo. However one cannot read of these times and this place without thinking of Georgette Heyer's, An Infamous Army. I still think of Heyer's Duchess of Richmond's ball and all those young men leaving for death and destruction after dancing gaily, then slipping away as duty and honor calls. Quinn's novel aptly recalls these emotions (as Quinn points to her personal and obviously very raw feelings in her author's note. Bravo!)
Geoffrey, Earl of Harrington, needs a wife to take up a post in Brussels. Elizabeth Turley has set her sights on Geoffrey but he needs to come up to scratch for theirs to be more than a marriage of convenience. Elizabeth is a wonderful character. Geoffrey just needs the right sort of nudge to blossom. The search for love between these two, alongside the dangers they find themselves in, makes for a great read!

You Never Forget Your First Earl is the fifth book in The Worthingtons series by Ella Quinn. Although part of a series it can be read as a standalone book.

Geoffrey, Lord Harrington needs a wife in order to gain the job he wants in Brussels. When two people, his friend and his grandmother suggest that he woo Miss Elizabeth Turley he decides she could indeed make the perfect wife for him. He doesn't need love, he just needs an amiable young woman who is capable of running a household.

Elizabeth is aware that Geoff must marry as soon as possible before losing his chance of the position abroad. Her three closest friends have not long got married and Elizabeth wants to find her dream man as well. Geoff is very good looking and seems a decent enough man, so she agrees to a courtship with him. It isn't too long before Geoff offers for her, and Elizabeth happily accepts. They marry by special licence and immediately prepare for their move. The trouble begins when just after the wedding she hears Geoff and his father talking and what she hears breaks her heart.

Geoff realises that something is very wrong with Elizabeth when she stops sharing his bed and barely speaks to him. He has no idea what he has done to upset her. He doesn't like that they are at odds, and even when he has to concentrate on the war effort Elizabeth is always on his mind. Can he find out what is wrong and sort it out, can he keep her safe in what turns into a war zone? Will Elizabeth ever tell him what she overheard so that they can work at getting their marriage back on an even keel? Or will they end up separating?

I enjoyed this story, although I will admit that the first few chapters of the book didn't hook me immediately. From the minute that Elizabeth agrees to marry Geoff, and then they begin their travels that soon changed though and I couldn't read the book quickly enough to find out how it would end. I enjoyed the will they won't they aspect of the romance, wondering if they could work things out. I especially enjoyed how even though she was angry with him, Elizabeth still very much cared for her husband and was there for him when he needed her. I enjoyed too seeing when Elizabeth proved that she wasn't just a pretty face, both when faced with would be bandits, plus helping with the wounded soldiers of war. All in all, this book, as with the others in the series which I have read and loved, is a good read and I recommend it.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers' copy of this book.

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley to read in exchange for a fair review. You Never Forget Your First Earl is book number 6 in Ella Quinn’s The Worthingtons series. I do think you need to read the whole series as the hero and heroine in this book have appeared in the other books and knowing a bit of their back stories will make your enjoyment of this book more complete. Geoffrey Lord Harrington starts out this novel as a pompous ass on his way to propose to Lady Charlotte Carpenter because she is the most sought after lady on the marriage mart and he needs to be wed in order to take up a diplomatic position in Brussels.... never mind that Charlotte does not wish to travel among a host of other reasons why Geoffrey would not suit her. The set down he receives is not quite enough to make Geoffrey reconsider his ways and his courtship of Elizabeth Turley looks to be heading to disaster too until he receives some good advice from his grandmother and Elizabeth who does likes him decides to make him work at his courtship. As always Ella Quinn has written a delightful romance and our hero learns that perhaps love is not quite as bad as he thought it would be. Elizabeth and Geoffrey

Ella Quinn writes excellent stories. I applaud her for making this match work. I just could not bring myself to like this hero. I truly tried. The heroine was the saving grace to this story. She tried. The advice given to both parties was good, but it takes execution and someone was just too full of himself (no names) to perform.

Miss Elizabeth Turley has watched from the sidelines as her dear friends have made excellent love matches. She wants the same for herself. I can't help but feel that she was robbed.

Geoffrey, Earl of Harrington looks good on paper. He's kind, considerate, handsome, well-formed and the heir to a marquisate. Yet... we've watched him court Lady Charlotte Carpenter in a haphazard, desultory fashion for several books. He barely noticed Elizabeth and didn't even remember meeting her. He's looking for a wife for daddy's approval and because he needs one for his job. He's checking the boxes, so to speak. He's just not romance hero material. Nevertheless, she persisted.

I wanted to see Geoffrey distinguish himself in some way. He just never did to me. Whereas, Elizabeth was outstanding in every way. I kept thinking that she should have been portrayed as older than a first season debutante because her depiction was more consistent with that of a full grown woman.

If you want to read a book about a heroine who triumphs in spite of picking a frog instead of a prince and making the thing work any way - you will enjoy this book. I did.

*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*

The Good
* This was a well written, interesting romance that didn't go down the expected routes.
* I found myself fully engaged with this and was sad when I had finished.
* The first half is a very detailed look at wooing in the regency era. If you are looking for a fast paced bodice ripper this isn't for you. This book takes its time, it goes through all the balls and teas and carriage rides. I really liked that Ella Quinn took the time to build the world so well and be so historically minded.
* The second part of the book is about their travels to Europe and about there time on the continent. It is set during the Napoleonic wars and id full to the brim of historic information about the period. I have not seen this in a historical romance before and I really loved it.
* Elizabeth is amazing. She is a wonderful, intelligent, funny and well put together young women. I found her impossible not to like.
* I liked the slow build romance and thought the chemistry was bang on.

The Not so Bad
* Geoffrey spent a lot of the first half of the book being cold and aloof. It took me a long while to warm up to him. In the end I did, but his desperate search for a wife in the beginning was a little off putting.

Bless his heart, Geoff is kind of clueless when it comes to courtship and women. He is very methodical and analytical about his courting methods. He just does not get it. I loved that about him. When would he finally figure it out? And Elizabeth, she is a dream in this book. She has rose-tinted glasses when looking at love and Geoff. Unfortunately, the last quarter of the book was a struggle to get through. Not that it was about the war but that it was just there. I did enjoy the story.

I really enjoyed reading You Never Forget Your First Earl by Ella Quinn. I received an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher and I am voluntarily reviewing the book. I recommend this book. It is part of a series but you don;t have to read the books before this one.

Lord Harrington must get married or lose his prestigeous position on the continent. Besides a love match, Elizabeth Hurley wants adventure and to travel. The adventure begins and we have a roller coaster ride with some danger and war thrown in to make this a great read and romance.

This book was dreadfully dull. At first, I just thought the book was just boring because I started reading right before I went to bed, but I was wrong. In the light of day, this book still made me want to fall asleep.

I felt like the book lacked a plot: seventy-five percent of the book was literally just Elizabeth Turley—a popular young society miss—and Lord Harrington—heir to an earldom—courting. And a very boring courtship at that. There was no intrigue, scandals, or any doubt that the characters would end up getting married. They literally just drive around, get ices, discuss politics and smile. The courtship doesn’t even include any particularly cute or funny scenes for goodness sake!

It is only in the last quarter of the book that there is any sort of strife between Lord Harrington and Elizabeth happens. And the strife is just so freaking dumb: both of them act super childish and immature when a simple conversation could have mended their issues.

Communication is just not that complicated kids!

The only remotely interesting scenes in this book happen at the very end when Lord Harrington and Elizabeth move to Brussels for his diplomat position. I’m not going to spoil it (in case you actually want to read this book—which I would not recommend), but there is a pretty decent climax. Unfortunately, by the time the characters moved to Brussels, I just couldn’t care less about their relationship.

As characters Elizabeth and Lord Harrington were fine. Elizabeth had many positive traits (resiliency, strength, loyalty) but she often came across as ridiculously childish. Which, arguably, is fair: she is a teenage in the midst of her first season. But regardless, her immaturity when it came to conflict resolution with Lord Harrington really bothered me—being passive aggressiveness is just never the answer.

As far as Lord Harrington….I spent the majority of the book wanting to hit him over the head with a stick. For someone obviously quite intelligent, he is unbelievably daft when it comes to women. I found his inability to discern Elizabeth’s feelings I found equally amusing and frustrating.

In conclusion, while I didn’t hate this book I didn’t like it either. While I never got actively angry or disgusted with the book, my eyes glazed over while reading it.

Quite a different kind of story which makes this book unique.
He has to marry because he has to be married to get a diplomatic position in Brussles AND she is not his first choice at all. But somehow he is drawn to her because she seems to be perfect - she is interested in politics, speaks more than English and likes to travel. But Elisbeth wants to be loved, she doesnt want to be his toy.

Confession to make. I didn’t read the book before this one. That said, there are things that were done in the previous book that might confuse some but Ms. Quinn does a great job letting us know what is going on. Like, that Geoffrey lost Charlotte Worthington in that one but trust me, Elizabeth is perfect for him. And that’s without reading the other book.

This book is great. Not awesome but great. Geoffrey is an idiot when it comes to women and at times, it’s hilarious. I adored how Elizabeth makes him work for it even though she loves him. I mean really, he can’t catch a break. These two are so evenly matched in every sense. Elizabeth is smart, not some simpering damsel and Geoffrey is that kind of hero that you just love from the first page. An idiot to the fairer sex but humbling in the end. Even when these two have their smexy times, Ms. Quinn doesn’t do it over the top but Elizabeth isn’t a lump in the bed either. She knows what she wants and Geoffrey isn’t afraid to give it to her.

One of the things that I really love about Ms. Quinn’s book is her authenticity. She knows her history, customs but doesn’t dumb it down for her readers. Her readers are smart so she doesn’t have to “explain” every little bit in the book. I hate when historical authors do that. I, for one, do not need to know everything about a dress and how many courses there are to eat at a wedding breakfast. To me that’s just filler and Ms. Quinn doesn’t do that.

Their time in Brussels was very good. I’m glad that they weren’t in England. It was a different setting that I’m not used to reading about in historical romance. Most everything happens in either England or France. Great job. I was definitely invested at that point in the book and it just kept getting better. I will have to say that the conflict in the book happened so late in the book that I was a bit disappointed. I expected something bigger but to me it was just meh.

Overall, I really liked getting to know Elizabeth and Geoffrey. While they could have been any other regency couple, it was their shennigans that kept pulling me back.

Elizabeth Turley's three friends have all married so she's more than ready to marry. Geoffrey, Earl of Harrington is tall, handsome, and dashing, he’s also just a bit too sure of himself. Elizabeth has observed enough about the rules of attraction to pique the earl’s attention. Lord Harrington must marry or lose a prestigious position in Brussels, and pretty, well-connected Elizabeth fits his needs admirably.
Another very good well written book from the author. I found that I wasn’t enamoured of Geoff to begin with he came across as a little petulant however as the novel progressed I found I liked him more & more. I especially liked his Grandmother & cousin Apollonia (love the name) taking his courting skills to task. Elizabeth is an intelligent & very likeable young woman, The attraction between the pair is apparent from their encounters. It was a very well paced story which I didn’t want to end. I also loved that characters from other series made cameo appearances.

My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

You Never Forget Your First Earl by Ella Quinn is book Five in The Worthingtons Series. This is the story of Elizabeth Turley and Geoffrey, Earl of Harrington. I have read the previous books but feel you can make this a standalone book.
Geoffrey needs to marry in order to get a prestigious position in Brussels. With his one attempt past him he is then given a list of names and Elizabeth was on that list. When he talks to her he finds she meets allot of his needs on the list he has. Elizabeth friends have married and now she wants her chance and when Geoffrey comes forward she thinks he might be the one. Although she does have him work some for her they end up marring but she later hears a conversation that Geoffrey had that sets back. But Geoffrey is confused of the change in her but goes forward to find the reason why...at the same time in keep her out of the new danger that has found them.
Love Ms. Quinn's stories...always a must read for me!

I received a free copy from netgalley for an honest review. You never forget your first Earl by Ella Quinn was a sweet read. I've read the other books in the series and I have to admit that this was my least favorite. If I like there's no real conflict in the story. Geoff are male lead is in need of a wife in order to take his position as a diplomat in Brussels after having been undermined in the beginning the hand of Lady Charlotte in the last book he is desperate to find the wife before the end of the season. I can I just feel like the story wasn't enough I felt like it dragged out longer than it needed to as there is no real conflict preventing Geoff and Elizabeth from there happily ever after a lot sooner than I came. Overall it is an enjoyable read.

I love this series, I did not like this book. I thought the FMC was amazing and strong and extremely layered. The MMC at almost every turn struck me as someone who would have gone to Reddit asking how it was possible that girls still didn’t like him despite him ticking all the boxes on what a female needed to feel courted. I wish he had succumbed to his sea sickness and the heroine was free to spread her light on someone more deserving

I received a copy of this book through NetGalley and the publishers for an honest review,
You Never Forget Your First Earl is just a brilliant read. I loved everything about this story from the strong and lovey Heroine of Elizabeth Turley and Geoffrey. The Earl Of Harrington. Elizabeth knows what she wants and is not afraid to face danger and all the difficulties she faces and I just loved the conversations that she has with her friends. They are true friends. As for Geoffrey he ambition and thinks that marriage will help him accomplish this but oh he has no idea as to how to treat many of the situations he has with Elizabeth. Shook my head many times while reading as to how clueless he is. This story made me smile a lot and I really enjoyed whiling a few hours it took to read this book. I will be adding a copy to my keeper list to read it again. I recommend this book all to enjoy.

Book club read

This book was slow and didn't engage me. I also didn't feel a connection between Elizabeth and Geoffrey. It also didn't scream Regency vibes, as much of the political discussion was around Waterloo and Napoleon.

[spoilers in the synopsis below]

Takes place during the Napoleonic era, just before the Battle of Waterloo

Geoffrey, Earl of Harrington, needs a wife so he can take a position in Brussels. He has his list of qualifications for a bride and when he finds one who meets those qualifications (Lady Elizabeth Turley) and his sight is set on Elizabeth, he just expects to get her. He has absolutely no clue that Elizabeth may not want him. He has no desire to fall in love, but of course Elizabeth does.
The book really is mostly them going around each other, Geoff being clueless as to what women/Elizabeth desires, but they marry in short time. However, Elizabeth overhears Geoffrey remark to his father that she fits his list of qualifications, and that he'll never be in love, he just needed a lady to run his household overseas. Elizabeth of course gets upset and acts cold towards him. It isn't until she is shot in the head in Belgium (some military skirmish, I think) that he realizes he loves her and couldn't lose her.

I think that the author should have focused on the courtship between Geoff and Elizabeth, because it's so damn good. I fell in love in an instant with both of them. I love how Elizabeth make Geoff work hard for her attention and how Geoff didn't just back up and look for someone else (even though he didn't really have much choice actually). But still, the story of their courtship is fun and I love it so much. But then it becomes boring in the second half when suddenly we're thrown into a war. It was so abrupt I had to blink and think hard, do I even want to read this until the end? Of course I did read it until the end and the ending is so cliche with the "I'm going to die and I realize I love you" thing, which is so overused. I prefer just the story about the courtship and Geoff is the spy so he needed a wife or something like that. Not that I disrespect waterloo but when we're told the story about the courtship for the first half of the book and then suddenly we're going to the war in the second half, it makes me dizzy because there are just too many information included inside

I’ve read this entire series, and am familiar with the characters, this couple has been throughout the series, and not particularly interesting or memorable characters in the series. They came alive in this book and had a delightful story of their own, and may be my favorite of the series thus far. Not really part of the Worthington family, our h is a dear friend of the Worthington ladies, and the H was a suitor to one lady, though a boring and uninteresting one. Both came alive in this book, with personality and passion. Having been rejected by his first choice of bride, the H settles on our h, deciding she meets all the requirements he has for a bride, a practical decision, since he’s not looking for love. Our h is looking for love and is surprised to find herself in love with her friends former suitor. As he is set to travel to the continent soon, they marry quickly and find passion together. Unfortunately, she overhears a conversation between him and his father and realizes he doesn’t love her. They travel together, but she’s broken, and he doesn’t know why. This was much better than I expected from this couple, and I continue to look forward to the next book. I received a free arc in exchange for an honest review.

I received an ARC from the author. I loved the book. As soon as I started it, I couldn't put it down. I especially loved the character of Elizabeth Turley; she was a young woman with oh-so-many talents. And poor Geoff - he hadn't a clue about love. But he learned. I truly enjoyed the characters of Geoff's grandmother and mother. The women characters throughout the story were fun and canny. Loved them all.

I received this novel from net galley and the publisher for an honest review. Thank you!!
I have read several of Ms. Quinn's novel and I enjoyed this novel as well. Miss Elizabeth Turley is a strong, caring, and smart woman. She can run a household and shoot. She is interested in Geoffrey, Earl of Harrington, but he thinks to highly of himself. She wants to marry him and she plans on getting him up to scratch. Geoff needs a wife fast to keep his position in Brussels. His first attempt at a lady was unsuccessful and he is determined not to fail again. Elizabeth has all the qualities he is looking for in a wife for his position and then some. However, he has no clue how to woo her. The more he get to know Elizabeth, the more he realizes he wants her, but does not quite understand what he is feeling. Elizabeth believes Geoff married her for love, but then overhears a discussion which hurts her deeply. Geoff does not understand why Elizabeth's attitude towards him has changed, but he plans on figuring it out since he misses her. As they travel thru Europe and trying to remain safe, trouble is always brewing. Will Geoff realize he is in love with Elizabeth before it is too late?
