One man with a secret. A family torn apart by the consequences.

Mr Bertram Atherton has one foot in the Ancient World, emerging from his library only to eat and sleep. But when the chaplain of his uncle, the Earl of Rennington, is brutally murdered, it is revealed that he was never ordained and so the earl’s marriage was invalid, and his children rendered illegitimate. Bertram’s father is now the heir to the earldom, and Bertram after him. It’s a horrifying change of circumstances for a man only interested in intellectual pursuits.

Miss Beatrice Franklyn is horrified to discover that her betrothed, the earl’s eldest son, has been disinherited and can’t make her a countess. But his cousin Bertram will inherit now, and he’ll do, won’t he? Bea sets her sights on a second betrothal, and she usually gets her way. How can unworldly Bertram resist her feminine wiles? But no matter how many tricks she tries and how determined she is to lure him into matrimony, she finds that Bertram is equally determined not to be lured. Which of them will win the battle of wills?

This is a complete story with a happy ever after. A traditional Regency romance, drawing room rather than bedroom. Book 2 of a 6 book series.

I live in the beautiful Highlands of Scotland with my husband. I like chocolate, whisky, my Kindle, massed pipe bands, long leisurely lunches, chocolate, going places in my campervan, eating pizza in Italy, summer nights that never get dark, wood fires in winter, chocolate, the view from the study window looking out over the Moray Firth and the Black Isle to the mountains beyond. And chocolate. I dislike driving on motorways, cooking, shopping, hospitals.

The lovely lady in my avatar is Archduchess Clementina of Austria (1798-1881), Princess of Salerno, painted around 1839.

NOTE: I read Regency romances as well as write them, and I review them all on my website, or you can find them right here on Goodreads on my real-name account at Pauline M. Ross.

I wasn’t sure if Mary Kingswood would make Bea a heroine, but here she is and she becomes so charming and kind. Quite a change from her previous appearance in this series.

Bertram is the possible future Earl and he isn’t interested. He wants to spend his time in the library with Horace.

Bea sets her cap at Bertram and he decides to invite her to a month-long house party to introduce her to his old school friends, who gather each year to talk about all things Latin. Most of his friends like her, especially after she genuinely becomes interested in learning Latin. But maybe Bertram IS interested after all…

The heroine of this book starts out as a character as unpleasant as Jane Austen 's Emma. But her discovery of learning transforms her, and from there the plot twists and turns wonderfully. Though this series has a very serious side, with murder and dark family secrets, this volume is mostly a fun romantic romp.

I love Mary Kingswood's books, and her latest is another favourite. I received an advance review copy and am happy to provide a review. I wasn't a fan of Bea, the lead character in this book, and was pleased that she became much more likeable. I look forward to the next one in this series.

Beatrice Franklyn pursued Walter, Viscount Birtwell, heir to the Earl of Rennington, until she managed to secure an engagement. Her widowed father was an accountant who inherited a fortune and married Lady Esther, daughter of a duke. For years she attempted to make a lady out of Bea and instilled in her the desire for a title. Thus, when Bea learned that Walter was, in fact, illegitimate because of his parents' invalid marriage, she jilted him and set her focus on Bertram Atherton, Walter's cousin, who is now in line to become the Earl of Rennington.

Bertram is a bespeckled Latin scholar with no interest in marriage. He lets Bea know this in no uncertain terms, while also promising to help her find a titled husband. It is at the annual house party for fellow Latinphiles, to which Bea is invited, that the two of them begin to see each other differently.

This new series opens a whole new world of families and characters, all richly drawn. It's easy to become immersed in their world. The characters are easy to love, and the story isn't formulaic. So wonderfully-written.

She felt trapped, like a duck hiding in the long grass listening to the guns in the distance, hoping to escape notice, but knowing that, sooner or later, the beaters will come and she will have no choice but to fly up in terror and be shot down. Just another dutiful daughter of the gentry, falling, falling under the guns of society’s expectations.

Likable Characters

Spoiler alert: this review gives away some of the story. If you want to come upon the keys to the romance at the heart of it, maybe read a different review. Just accept that I heartily recommend the book and don’t read the rest of my endorsement below. Just enjoy the book.

Kingswood populates her books with interesting characters. In this story Latin and kisses are the catalysts that bring her characters together. One might think this is a story about the attraction of opposites, but ironically, it is the poetry of Horace mixed with a healthy dose of physical attraction that the protagonists have in common that brings them together.

This was another stellar entry into The Chaplain’s Legacy series. If you’ve read the summary, you know that the story features the third in line to the earldom, Bertram as our MMC, and Bea who not so graciously jilted Walter the former heir to the earldom.

Pros - Kingswood could create a how-to series on how to make seemingly detestable characters lovable. I have to admit, I was not a fan of Bea going into this but grew to love her as I dove deeper into her story. Bertram was delightful as a Latin obsessed nerd, Regency-style.

Cons - this is a Kindle paperwhite con. The translation feature and my six years of Spanish did NOT help me much when reading the Latin verses peppered throughout the story.

Overall 4.5 ⭐️

DNF I have read all of Mary Kingswood’s books and really liked them, many are on my reread list. The Chaplain series has me perplexed. One, I LIKED the chaplain himself, and I loved what he did for his wife. So him being the villain is difficult. And the law kind of pisses me off, so while I realize it is a fictional story set in another country in another time…I am annoyed which is not conducive to getting immersed in the stories. I also really dislike the protagonist here. And looking at the upcoming book, I don’t think I’ll care for the next one either. I might get bored and finish. But… here is hoping she finishes up this series quickly and moves on to another family. Although there is a depressingly large number of people affected by this premise and waiting in the wings for their story to be told.

Could not like the heroine.

This was a tough one to finish. I have to like the heroine in a romance. She was ridiculous. This really surprised me. I've never until now found a Mary Kingswood book I didn't like.

Determination is the perfect title for this second book in Mary Kingswood’s current series, but while it is part of a series, it can be read and enjoyed as a standalone.

Bertram Atherton is determined to spend his life as a bachelor scholar, focusing on the classics. As the eldest son of a second son, he has the expectation of a comfortable, but duty-less life. Until the unimaginable happens.

Through events narrated in the previous book, the marriage of his uncle, the Earl of Rennington turns out to be invalid, making Bertram’s cousin Walter, the presumed heir and all his siblings illegitimate. Eustace now is in the uncomfortable position of being second in line to the earldom—a position he does not want to have.

Then there is Bea, who had been Walter’s fiancée, more interested in his title than in him. The moment she hears about Walter’s removal as heir, she breaks off the engagement and announces to Bertram that they should marry. Bertram is appalled; Bea refuses to listen to his refusals. She is determined to marry a title.

However, Bertram has a proposal of his own. He is to attend a house party of other classic lovers and has been told the wife of the host wants more females as guests. Bertram offers to get Bea an invitation, since several titled gentlemen looking for brides will be there. In exchange, she must give up her pursuit of him.

A deal is struck, and the house party begins with results that neither of the two expected.

I was particularly impressed with how the character of Bea was handled and how she grew beyond the expectations and strictures society and her stepmother were forcing on her.

Walter, also grew as a person once he lifted his eyes from his favorite Latin texts.

Eventually, both characters continue to be determined, although their end goals change.
I found the characters engaging—even the secondary and tertiary characters. It was a pleasure to read this book. I can’t wait for the next in the series when the fallout from the invalid marriage continues to be felt.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and was delighted to be chosen as an ARC reader, thus getting a free advance copy.

I was really looking forward to reading the second book in this series and I have not been disappointed. Mary knows how to gently bring the reader aware of "the story so far" and alludes to previous characters as the story unfolds. Yes like many I had really disliked Bea Franklyn, but this changed as we gradually become aware of her true character and the reasons why she was so determined to have a titled husband. My favourite person is Mr Franklyn , Bea's father; there was such humour, love and gentle common sense there. As for the Latin and the many quotes, my Latin is not good enough to check that there are no errors and I wondered whether Mary is also a Latin scholar or whether she had to do extensive research to write this book!
My only -minor- problem is that this book does not make any progress towards solving the original murder mystery around which the premise of the whole series is based. I was not convinced by the news that the supposed culprit has acknowledged his guilt. The people who know Tom Shapman immediately said that it was totally out of character ...so there may be more to it than that and Captain Edgerton and Willerton Forbes I feel sure will reappear in the books to come. Thank you for several hours of enjoyment Mary, I have pre-ordered "Anger

Mary Kingswood does it again!

Determination is the latest by Mary Kingswood in The Chaplain's Legacy series. It is amazing to me how she just seems to get better with each book! In this one we have an astonishing transformation of a previously heartless female title hunter into a . . . Hmmmm. That would be a spoiler.
Then we could talk about the hero who successfully . . . No , that would be a spoiler too.
I will just say that this one has, in addition to a great adventure and mystery, a very sweet, unexpectedly touching love story . . . And I am beginning to wonder if the murder we thought was solved . . . wasn't! If you enjoy Regency romance in which the story focuses on the drawing room rather than the bedroom, this is absolutely at the top of the genre!

A determined and delightful young lady!

Another wonderful addition to the chaplain's legacy series!
The murder of the chaplain and the discovery that he was not ordained has caused tremendous upheaval among several families.
Carefully schooled and prodded by her Mama (a Duke's daughter), Bea has been on the hunt for a husband. She had finally captured her quarry only to find that he is not who she thought he was.
This story is delightful. In the beginning Bea seemed very cold and calculating and not very likable, but as the story developed so did her character and soon I was rooting for her. There are quite a few laughs out loud moments, and a satisfying conclusion. We're still left wondering if the chaplain's murderer is truly guilty but I have no doubt that there will be twists and turns in that case also ng the way.

superb!

Honestly, Ms Kingswood is extraordinary. What an idea, to have a family turned upside down when they discover, after the murder of the family chaplain, that the marriage ceremonies performed by him are illegal. Discovering illegitimacy isn’t a new plot, to be sure, but this is rather different, and the stories so far have been fascinating.
It was hard to like the unfeelingly ambitious girl one meets early on, in this book, or to find a rather uninteresting academically-minded man particularly appealing, but as events occur, so do both minor and major characters develop. And besides, there are gentlemen available who even the most ambitious female might be happy to welcome into the family.

Very ceative and unique but a trifle repetitive

I have, for several years now, been a huge fan of Mary Kingswood. I'm not sure, but I think I've read all of her books so far. This book, the first in a new series, but with many of the familiar characters from the other books, has some of the themes that dominated them.
But the introduction of a Latin scholar and his friends, is all new. I found it entertaining to copy and paste the lengthy Latin pieces into a translator.
My only quibble is that Ms. Kingwood reminds us way too often of Bea's quandary - marry for a title or for love.

Another delightful book

I love this series. I bought this book because Edgerton and friends were mentioned. But, they really weren't featured at all and I didn't even think to miss them. Bertram and Bea were delightful. Mary Kingswood writes her characters so skillfully that you don't even miss the characters that are missing. I loved !!! Heck fire, stupid autocorrect!! Can't even write a review about a book that is so thoroughly good without it changing words which changes the meaning of what you are writing. I highly recommend this book, hopefully autocorrect will let those words stand!

A tale with plenty of romantic twists and turns

I always look forward to a new Mary Kingswood book and try to ration my reading to delay the sense of loss at having finished the story. However the gap between the release of this book and the next , means that I will enjoy reading the series again from the start when the next book is published.
Mary Kingswood’s books are well written and carefully proofread. In addition she takes you on a journey of romantic twists and turns with the hero and heroine as they develop and mature. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

Too bad… too bad

I have thoroughly enjoyed all of Ms. Kingswood’s series.. except perhaps the last one which was ok but not as good as all the others in my simple estimation. And Book 1 of this series was ok.. just ok.. but this book was just insipid. I kept hoping it would get better but in fact it just kept getting worse. No mystery, no real “reveal” about Nicholson’s murder (may this be coming yet in another installment??), just nothing. Has Ms. Kingswood run out of ideas? I hope not, but the theme and the preview for Book 3 is not at all promising.

I was very hesitant to start this book because Bea Franklyn was very unlikable in the first book. And she does start off this book as brash and forward.

But when Bertram makes a deal with her to bring her along to a house party in exchange for her stopping her pursuit of him (a deal that she keeps faithfully), their interactions shift, and I suddenly start rooting for them more than I ever did any couple by Mary Kingswood.

Bonus points for the best first kiss ever. I am so glad I continued with the series!

Mary Kingswood delights once again!

At first, I was not all that enamoured with Bea, but as the story evolved so did her character and it was not long before she had completed won me over!
Whilst I am not an exponent of the “it’s in his kiss” philosophy, it did make for a fun story. And everything came to a happy conclusion, so what else could one want??
A truly wonderful story from beginning to end!

I received an ARC by this author and I’m so grateful! I thoroughly enjoyed this story! At times I’d get exasperated with the couple because it was taking so long to come together but it was thankfully relieved. Both of them were loveable as were all the supporting characters, especially the Latin group. As always, I look forward to the next book!

Interesting view of the regency as always and an interesting premise. It is not necessary to recall details of the first book, we do not see more of the investigation in this one. Instead we get a story of two characters that takes places mostly at the same time as the first book.

Perhaps the way the problems are resolved felt a little abrupt, and out of character.

Delightful Read

As always, the writing is excellent. Bea’s character was redeemed as she came to realize there is more to marriage than a title. The impact of her Step-Mama’s influence also explained a lot about her previous treatment of Walter. Bertrand might have been studious but he was not a pushover. It was an enjoyable read to see their characters and love develop.

Sorry Mary, this one didn’t work for me overall. The heroine was too unsympathetic for much of this (or rather the scenario because I did like Bee). So her heroine’s journey was enjoyable in places , particularly towards the end, but took too long to get going. And not enough of what I assume is the meta arc of the murder mystery of the chaplain.

Bookish delights

It is quite amazing to discover that the rather obnoxious Bea is not who she seemed in the last book. In fact, she is a very sympathetic character. As it turns out, she and Bertram are perfect for each other. But it takes time for the two of them to realize it.

Bertram's friends are a fun bunch, and I hope they will be the heroes of future novels.

As always, a wonderful addition to my Mary Kingswood collection. I can’t even express how much joy these books bring me. This story is so unexpected. I read the sneak preview and instantly decided two things: the next book would be about Walter, and I absolutely despised Beatrice Franklyn. Wrong on both counts. It turns out to be a house party story, which I love, and the murder in the previous book has little to do with it. The heart of it revolves around knowing yourself and what you really want. And poetry. Beautiful poetry. I’ve read translations of the authors mentioned here when I was young and uneducated in the finer things. I’m inspired to go back and read the Romans and Greeks. Last year I immersed myself in Lord Byron, so much so that I named our new puppy Byron. This year it will be Horace. We’ll need to get another puppy.

Kisses only.

I was not excited to read Bea’s story. And the first few chapters I questioned why I was reading it. After a few chapters though I started liking Bea more. I’m glad she discovered herself and stood up for her own desires.

Enthralling

Mary Kingswood never disappoints. Her stories always have a well developed plot. The story has twist and unforseen turns that hold you attention. In this book the stepmother is almost a villain. The father manages to see the good in every situation.

slow start, predictable

I will read every Mary Kingswood novel. Always humorous- and human, without bedroom scenes and sweetly romantic. We all knew who would end up with whom. We get to revisit other characters who are woven in from other books. I remain a fan.

I love all Mary Kingswood's books! I loved this one, too...once I engaged with the MCs. The great thing about her books is that the characters are not perfect, but complex and imperfect creatures who grow as things proceed. Looking forward to the next installment!

You have to kiss a lot of frogs before you get a Prince.

Poor Bea! Her stepmother gave her terrible advice. Thankfully Bertim fell in love with her. It took a lot of Latin to straighten out the mess.
