Cameron's life of shifting between the Human and Daemon worlds is under threat.
Two sinister figures want to destroy the Parallel - the realm between the worlds populated by daemons, dark creatures, old gods and werewolves - and everyone in it.
To save the Parallel, Cameron must make the ultimate sacrifice, but what is he prepared to lose?
"Heady, wonderful stuff… I adored this novel" (Paul Magrs on "Daemon Parallel")
The manuscript for Roy’s first novel, Daemon Parallel, was shortlisted for both the Sceptre and the Kelpies prize, and won a Scottish Book Trust New Writers Award. A sequel, Werewolf Parallel (“Clever, creative and fun.” Kirkus Reviews) completed the duology.
Roy's recent short stories have appeared in The Myriad Carnival, Out There and the British Fantasy Society Journal.
As a scriptwriter, Roy has worked on several of Big Finish’s acclaimed audio drama series including The Confessions of Dorian Gray, The Omega Factor, and the Worlds of Doctor Who. His epic Dark Shadows 50th Anniversary Blood & Fire script won the 2017 Scribe Award for Best Audio Drama.
After the lifechanging events of Daemon Parallel, things have returned to normal for Cameron – well, as normal as they can be when one of your friends is a werewolf, the other is a girl who was once the prisoner of a sinister daemon, you're running a business that trades artefacts between the human and Daemonic worlds and, at will, you can cross over into a realm known as the Parallel, a void between the two worlds where anything could happen, and frequently does. Oh, and you're now a werewolf yourself, too…
But Cameron's routine is about to be rudely broken. One day, a pair of sinister visitors arrive at the shop and Cameron, Morgan and Eve realise they must fight for what is theirs – a fight that turns into a battle to save the Parallel itself as a sinister plan is uncovered that could cost Cameron everything he holds dear.
I adored Daemon Parallel, but I loved Werewolf Parallel even more, if that's possible. The writing is sharp, gripping and darkly funny, and the magical world hidden just beneath the surface of modern–day Edinburgh is brilliantly realised. Some of the descriptions are wonderful and, in the case of one particularly revolting character, wonderfully disgusting (almost Dahl-esque, in fact): A strange sickly odour, like mushrooms cooked in sugar, hung in the air. *shudders deliciously*
I love the use of myth in Werewolf Parallel, too – one of my favourite chapters features Janus, the Roman god of beginnings and endings. But what captivated me the most about this book was the page-turning tension created by dilemmas Cameron, Morgan and Eve face. Sometimes books that are packed with action suffer a little on the character front, but this is most certainly not the case here. Cameron, Morgan and Eve are all hugely believable and sympathetic and at various points, I was reading through my fingers, praying everything would turn out alright for them… though whether they do or not, though, I'm not saying. You'll have to read the book to find out!
It's hard to say much more about Werewolf Parallel without giving away major plot spoilers, but if you're looking for a magical read with the perfect blend of mystery, excitement, humour and tension – a read which will keep you turning the pages well into the small hours of the morning – this is the book for you. I urge everyone to get their paws on a copy now!
Cameron, Morgan, and Eve are back in the riveting sequel to Daemon Parallel. It's been months since Grandma Ives betrayed Cameron and was defeated thanks to Morgan biting Cameron. Cameron is getting along great with his new werewolf abilities. That is until his abilities start acting strange. Morgan on the other hand is great until his mother decides it's time for him to fulfill his family and pack duty. Eve is... well getting a little angry at being left on her own for the simple reason that she is now the oldest, at least in appearance, of them and someone needs to take care of the shop.
Then Mr. Black and Mr. Grey come to the shop saying that they are taking Cameron to court on the grounds that the shop only belongs to Grandma Ives and upon her death will revert to the previous owner's last living relative. Cameron must produce Grandma Ives at the court or the shop will be taken away.
Cameron and his friends soon discover that Mr. Black and Mr. Grey are after more then the shop and that they want to "return the world" to the way it should be. On top of that the Pack has found out about Cameron and wants to meet.
Cameron has his work cut out for him as he must make hard choices, push his abilities beyond what he knows, and have to deal with daemotic politics all while trying to save the parallel and all those who live there.
I did not read book 1 but I will go back and read it. Werewolf Parallel is so captivating and I really feel like I missed out by not reading the first book - going back next to read it. I never wanted to put this down. I love books that do an excellent job of of mixing mythological characters, fantastical characters and magical others into one story - blending them into the storyline and doing it very well. Roy Gill does a great job and he keeps the readers' interest. There is excitement, mystery, humor, and more. Something for everyone and very fast paced! I am actually going to go back and read both with my daughter.
The lovely thing about good YA fiction is that it doesn't feel like it's talking down to you.
Philip Pullman's books have been read by all ages, much of Robert Louis Stevenson was aimed at young people yet, and Roy Gill's Parallel books are delightfully appealing to anyone who fancies a bit of urban fantasy - especially if you love Edinburgh, for it is as much a character in these as New York in Sex and the City.
I have genuinely recommended these to everyone I know who can read. They're great fun. More!
I was so excited for this book - and it did not disappoint. This book was fantastic. I loved every moment of it and had a very hard time putting it down. The characters were great and the plot was so much thicker than the first book. I also loved how much more of the Parallel we were able to see in this book. I really enjoyed the plot twists and general awesomeness of the novel.
