I am a lay person who didn't know what to expect reading this. I am also a trans person.

I was afraid of taking the offer of speech therapy from my GIC because of the reasons highlighted in this book. There is a tremendous vulnerability in opening yourself up to a cis therapist and allowing them to help mould your voice. There is potential for harm even if not conscious abuse - I don't want to force myself to "put on" a false voice because my cis therapist thinks that masculinity has only one acceptable sound.

This book really made me aware of just how integral the voice is. There was one part which described the voice as the essential tool we have for expressing ourselves, our needs and gaining connection to others.

Before I read this book, I was hoping my voice was something that I could brush under the carpet and avoid drawing any attention to it. But, this book really helped me feel like my voice isn't "wrong" it's just one expression of masculinity in a whole spectrum of masculinity.

Also big shout out for really exploring the Non-Binary clients needs. Not just one throwaway sentence but this book gets into the social construction of the gender binary in the context of voice and voice therapy.

I really hope (although I have some doubts) that prospective cis (and trans, non-binary!) voice therapists read this with an open mind and don't feel personally attacked by the suggestions in this book as I know I'd feel safe with someone who embodies what is taught here.
