"A timely, level-headed analysis of America's most polarizing political issues." - Kirkus Reviews Have you been wondering about the big issues dominating the news? Is climate change a massive threat or not? What is really going on with immigration? More importantly, how did American politics become so divided and hostile? Finally, one of America's top engineers has brought these topics and others together in a thought-provoking book. This book is rooted in history, facts, and logic, and it lays out solutions to America's problems. A book focused to get Americans talking to one another again, so we can rise to the occasion and solve today's problems together.
William Taggart has over thirty years as a professional engineer in industry. He has travelled the world, building some of industry’s biggest projects and solving some of their thorniest problems. Now, he has applied analytical skills developed in industry, coupled with his natural inquisitiveness and thirst for creative solutions, to the problems of modern-day American politics. Seeking answers to questions many of us have been asking, he has focused his keen mind on researching these, and other big issues. He invites everyone to think about what America really needs.
Fixing America is a scholarly read, not a light weekend read. It is, however, worth making the time to delve into. While I didn't agree with everything the author presented as solutions, this book got me thinking and offered me information I did not previously have on the many important issues facing Americans as we wonder, "What next?"
As Taggart says in the final chapter,
"The point of this book was to strip away the radical propaganda, dig up the undiscussed history and facts, and get down to the core issues to see if there were solutions. And there are solutions. Solutions that everyone might not agree on, but solutions that form the basis for further discussion. And it is that discussion that we are lacking, a discussion tempered with kindness and regard for the opposite side."
This book is for the American who looks around and recognizes that we need change; it's for the reader who is willing to seek solutions with the other side of the aisle. Change is hard, but if we don't start somewhere, we're not going anywhere - and William Taggart has made a fine attempt at leading the way.
FTC Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book for Reedsy Discovery review. All opinions are my own.
So I am biased. I wrote the book. But in writing this book it forced me to re-examine beliefs that I had been taught, but could not prove. It forced me to look at things that I hadn’t given a single thought to and realize the disfunction that exists in so many places. I hope you will read this book and realize the problems are not left vs right or rural vs urban, but that the lack of discussion is killing America.
I just finished “Fixing America: An Engineer’s Solution to Our Social, Cultural, and Political Problems”, and let me tell you—this book doesn’t just point out America’s mess. It jumps right in to fix it. Taggart skips the finger-pointing and drama we’re all tired of and offers what we rarely see these days: real, actionable solutions. Honestly, I didn’t think that was still possible, but Taggart proved me wrong.
The book begins with clear, no-nonsense principles for improving the country—nothing flashy, just solid, straightforward ideas. Then it dives into the heated issues everyone is always arguing about. Abortion, immigration, and other hot-button topics all get their turn. But here’s the twist: Taggart doesn’t stop there. He tackles everything—social policy, energy, welfare, economics, political reform—like he’s on a mission to fix it all. It’s as if someone handed him a “solve everything” list, and he checked it off. What stood out to me the most? The balance. Taggart doesn’t pick sides like most pundits. He calls out the nonsense wherever it comes from—left, right, or that confusing middle ground. A bipartisan roast? Absolutely. Grab some popcorn.
But here’s the real shocker: Taggart argues that America’s divide isn’t just left vs. right; it’s urban vs. rural. As someone living in Mississippi—a state so red it practically glows—I can tell you he’s spot on. Most of Mississippi is rural, but the Gulf Coast, where I live, is a completely different world. That urban vs. rural divide? It’s so painfully accurate, it might as well come with a warning label. Take the Medicare expansion fiasco: Mississippi’s GOP blocked it, and small-town hospitals started closing left and right. But rural Mississippi? Still clinging to outdated ideas, all while begging the larger, bluer states to come to the rescue. (And let’s not forget, Mississippi takes way more federal money than it sends back. We’re like that friend who always “forgets” their wallet.)
This book isn’t just something to read—it’s a call to action for anyone tired of the noise and ready to make real change. It’s sharp, snarky, and packed with more insights than a month’s worth of cable news. Fixing America should absolutely be at the top of your reading list. Get ready to roll up your sleeves because this book isn’t about waiting for someone else to fix things—it’s about taking action. Change is tough, but if we don’t start somewhere, we’ll get nowhere. William Taggart has shown us where to begin. The real question is: are we ready to take the next step?
I can’t recommend this book enough. Seriously—don’t let it sit on your shelf like all those “important” books you never get around to reading. I won this book as part of a Goodreads Giveaway & I'm so glad I did.
I won this book through a Goodreads giveaway in exchange for an honest review. Thanks for choosing me.
This book needs to be read by everyone living in America. Every citizen and every congressman/congresswoman, EVERYONE. It is educational, insightful, and well written. I might not have agreed with everything, but it was definitely worth the read.
Read it, learn from it, talk about it, and spread the knowledge. Maybe little by little we can all make the necessary changes.
Eye opening and thought-provoking. I liked to skip around on this one and read one section at a time. Want something that challenges your beliefs and way of thinking? This is the book for you! Well done, Mr. Taggert!!
This book presents what I would consider viable solutions to some of our country’s most pressing problems. I was a little skeptical about how partisan this book would be and was pleasantly surprised that Mr. Taggart stuck to verifiable facts, statistics, and history without being partisan. He did a good job of balancing examples on both sides of the aisle when discussing how a particular issue was/is viewed. This is book that I could read multiple times and still learn something, because there is so much information.
If you have a chance to read this book, please do. Given our current state of politics, cultural and societal issues, this book is a must read for critical thinkers. While you may not agree with all the proposed solutions offered in this text, I can guarantee that it will make you examine what you thought you knew and provide you with information you may have been lacking. This book will leave you better informed on many issues and, hopefully, open your mind to examining the issues/solutions from both sides of the aisle. This isn't a book you need to read in one sitting, I found that I enjoyed taking time to process and discuss the information provided before moving onto the next chapter/issue.
One of America’s top #engineers, William M. Taggart IV, assesses the damage of American #Politics, #economics, and #society — and proposes solutions to fix it in his provocative study, FIXING AMERICA!
This book is easy to read. Each chapter is about a single issue, such as education, the national debt, abortion, immigration, guns, energy, etc. There are forty one issues. It is very comprehensive with something for everyone. Each issue is described in detail, followed by suggested remedies. This could provide the basis for some very good discussions with people of various points of view.
