Love and lust, friends with benefits, and promised happiness—Regina Buttner's 'Down a Bad Road' delves into the intricate dynamics of relationships with a contemporary noir twist. Set in a rural upstate New York town, the story follows bachelor Ron Burley, who had resolved to steer clear of married women. However, fate had other plans when he encounters the irresistibly captivating steamy hot Lavender LeClair at a soccer game. With her entrance comes Penelope's tarot card readings and the unexpected reappearance of Marta Grolsch, who has held onto the belief that Ron is 'The One' since high school. As snow falls relentlessly, the stage is set for a stormy menage à trois that keeps readers on the edge of their seats and sends Lavender on a Marta's-got-a-green-aura tangent.

This fast-paced thriller is reminiscent of a wild rollercoaster ride—a hot mess express as Shelby aptly describes it. As I found myself engulfed in the narrative, the hours slipped away, and sleep became a distant thought. The morning after, my mind still hazy, I was left pondering Penelope's cryptic messages from the cabin in the woods and the treacherous muddy roads leading to it. Buttner masterfully creates an atmosphere that leaves emotions hanging in the balance, barely clinging to reason.

And then there's the ending—oh, what a punch to the gut it delivers. A nocturnal suspense that feels as if it jumped straight out of Penelope's tarot cards. 'Down a Bad Road' is the kind of novel that renders sleep unnecessary, captivating readers with its gripping narrative. Common sense, too, is best left aside as you dive into this enthralling tale. Simply put, it's that good.

Ron Burley is a simple man. He’s hardworking, kind and honest. He’s a bachelor, and likes it that way. He lives a modest life managing a convenience store, driving a rundown truck and living in a trailer with his two dogs. He likes domestic beer, living his life the way he wants, and country music.

Lavender LeClair is the miserable wife of Clint and mother of Logan, who has ADHD. Her psychic (yeah, that’s right) tells her she’s a young soul, and it shows. She is disgusted by her nerdy husband, annoyed with her overactive child, and is wanting something new. She likes shopping, wine, and more shopping.

When these two meet, it sets into motion an irreversible chain of events. This is definitely a case of opposites attracting. Lavender can’t stand his dirty trailer, his low-paying job, and his dogs. He can’t stand that she’s materialistic, can’t cook and oh, IS MARRIED. Normally he would never fall for a married woman, but the promise of no-strings-attached sex is appealing to both of them, so an affair begins, and love follows.

Soon, Burley is finding himself having to lie. A lot. He knows he needs to make more money if he’s going to be able to hold onto Lavender, but he’s not sure where to start. His old friend from high school, Marta, recently lost her husband and she needs help running his business. She’s offering good money, but Lavender might get jealous, and he’d only be able to see her on the weekends. He decides to take another career turn, and this takes him to the title of the book - down a bad road.

This wasn’t my usual horror/thriller read, but it was fantastic and suspenseful. This is not a short book, but I read it in one sitting because I got so invested in the characters that I couldn’t stop. Needless to say, I couldn’t stand Lavender, and I loved Burley. He wouldn’t be my type either, but he tries his hardest at everything he does. He has foibles, but deep down, he’s a good man. Lavender was amusing at first, then annoying, then downright gross. I commend the author for writing these two (and the other, smaller characters) so well.

I wasn’t sure what I was getting into with this, but it turned out to be a surprise five star book for me. I loved the location (upstate New York) and the snowy atmosphere, I loved the characters, and I loved this whole story. It was touching in places, funny in places, and had several great twists and turns. I look forward to more by this author!

Regina Buttner’s story of desire, hope, and greed hooks the reader from the start. Vividly depicted characters and their tangled strategies for happiness generate an increasingly suspenseful narrative. The plot mingles desperation, fortune telling, and vendetta in a fast-paced tale that unfolds to a thoroughly unexpected ending.

I got an early read on this one and here's what I wrote about Regina's Down A Bad Road:

"Down a Bad Road is gripping and unforgettable suspense—think North Country, New York noir laced with dark humor. Regina Buttner’s unreliable—but compelling—characters struggle in a blue-collar community where everyone is willing to do whatever it takes for a leg up or a way out. Expect to laugh. Prepare to cry. But don’t plan on setting this fast-paced thriller down until you read the last page!"

Down a Bad Road is a twisty page-turner that pays modern-day homage to old Hollywood film noir. Its flawed characters include a just-getting-by convenience store manager who just can’t seem to catch a break, a busty femme fatale, and a jilted lover lurking in the shadows, none of whom are especially likable, but all of who are compelling, even if only for the frisson of schadenfreude at least one evokes. Here, in a smallish town in upstate New York, the wintery weather, with its heavy snow, peril of icy roads and frozen breath, parallels the sense of claustrophobia, where, between love triangles, get-rich-quick schemes, and psychic consultations, everyone seems doomed to make the worst possible choices. As the tale gallops toward its inevitable conclusion, the chapters become increasingly brief, and the point of view volleys between characters, creating a feeling of breathless anticipation where I found myself flipping pages faster and faster, rooting for the antihero, led by his libido down (yet another!) bad road. I highly recommend Buttner’s novel as a quick read with a slow burn that leaves the reader chilled to the bone - but smiling darkly. Troy Hollan - author of Clucked

Ron Burley has always thought he would only marry for love and when Lavender enters his life, he is ready to toss aside all rules for her. Their secret romance is like a thorn in the eye of Ron's childhood friend Martha - who had always loved him like a psycho. Martha attempts to lure Ron towards her using her money tactics and his mad love for Lavender. The love triangle soon turns deadly and dirty.

While reading the book, you might feel sympathetic towards our protagonists but once the book ends, you feel totally changed.
I hate Lavender (not the plant but the character in here). She is cold, calculative and manipulative. She is precisely the kind of person I would never like to cross paths with. What I did enjoy the best was Martha's psycho character. At least one of them was a strong-headed one, the other two were merely acting like they would eat whatever's served up to their plate.

A modern-day noir where every character has a hidden personal agenda, unfulfilled dreams of success and riches, and a lonely heart looking for a sexy rendezvous. A twisty tale set in a small town filled with unreliable narrators whose narcissistic demands foreshadow their ultimate doom. I received an ARC of this new novel and think you’ll be surprised about who sets the ball in motion and who gets their just desserts in the end. If contemporary noir is on your reading list, check this one out!

Buttner's layered novel shows the hero’s and heroine’s poor decisions lead them Down A Bad Road. Featuring a tight cast similar to Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, the author allows the reader to witness, collect facts, and then judge if each flawed character receives their just deserts.

Ronald Burley, a manager at a local mini mart, found himself at a youth soccer game one fateful day when his life took an unexpected turn. Lavender, a mother from the game, approached him with a seemingly innocent question, but it soon became evident that she was unhappy with her husband and her life in general.

As time passed, Lavender and Burley struck up a friendship that eventually evolved into a romantic relationship. Her husband eventually discovered her infidelity and made the difficult decision to leave. Lavender, however, was determined to pursue a serious relationship with Burley and had her sights set on marriage.

Meanwhile, Burley's childhood friend, Marta, entered the picture. Marta offered Burley a job at her late husband's roofing business, citing her inability to manage it alone. Burley was tempted by the opportunity but hesitated due to Lavender's jealousy and possessiveness.

Marta's situation took a tragic turn when she revealed to Burley that she was battling cancer. She sweetened the job offer, but by this time, Burley had ventured into a new business endeavor, a fast-food restaurant franchise called Sandwich King. Financial troubles and a less-than-helpful silent partner added to the stress of running the franchise.

Desperate for solutions, Lavender turned to psychics in her quest to improve her life. Meanwhile, Burley faced a dilemma when Marta's niece informed him that Marta was near the end of her life and had something for him. Burley set out to see her, but Sandwich King encountered a crisis that forced him to turn back. Later, he learned that Marta had passed away but had left an envelope for him.

Burley held onto hope that Marta had left him a substantial sum of money, desperately needed to save his failing business and keep Lavender by his side. Little did he know that this mysterious envelope would unleash a series of unexpected twists and turns in his life.

I devoured this audiobook in just two days; its captivating and intriguing storyline held me spellbound from start to finish. An outstanding novel that left me thoroughly impressed. I extend my heartfelt thanks to LibraryThing for providing me with the opportunity to experience this book.

I am thrilled to be part of the WOW! Women of Writing Blog Tour for Down a Bad Road by Regina Buttner. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review and here it is:

I did not see this book coming.
When I read, I expect to like the book. I expect to like and relate to the characters. I expect to learn from their lives so I can make better sense of my own.
But I did not expect the conflicted feelings I had toward these characters, feelings that demanded I devour the book in as little time as possible.
In Down a Bad Road by Regina Buettner, we meet Willow and Burley. Willow is an unhappily married woman and Burley is a single man wondering what’s next for his life. After a chance encounter on the soccer field, Willow sets her sights on Burley to come to her rescue and sweep her into the romance she never had with her husband, something he is only at first hesitant to do.
Set in upstate New York, Willow dazzles him with her provocative clothing, frosted pink lipstick and sequined Uggs and Burley caves, starting to imagine a new life for the two of them, a life that suddenly becomes complicated with the arrival of a long-lost classmate with a big secret.
But trust me, you don’t see that complication coming until your left gripping the last page of the book shouting “Nooooo!” as you realized the saga has ended.
These were characters I wanted to hate: a spiteful woman purposefully cheating on her husband and conniving her way to whatever she wants and a man who willingly accepts the challenge. But Buttner artfully develops these characters over time, revealing their inner struggles, regrets and pain and almost endearing them to me. Almost.
As a read who lives in upstate New York, I was transported to the book’s setting and could literally see the setting in my mind, something that added to my experience as a reader. These characters went down a bad road, both figuratively and literally and readers can feel both journeys.
If you want to read a book with characters you’ll love to hate, with a strong sense of place and with a gut-punch of an ending, then this book is for you.

I read and enjoyed Regina Buttner’s Absolution so when I had the chance to listen to the audiobook of her new psychological thriller, Down a Bad Road, I jumped at it. The audiobook was performed by Jennifer Pickens and I thought it was very well narrated.

The story opens up with one of the main characters getting a tarot card reading by a physic, Penelope (who was actually my favorite character even though she was barely in the book).

The story then jumps back to when married mom Lavender set her sights on Ron Burley, a bachelor who doesn’t date married women. Burley really doesn’t stand a chance after beautiful Lavender starts flirting with him and soon after they start a passionate affair.

While the affair is going on, Burley reconnects with his childhood friend, Marta, a recent widow, who has also set her sights on Burley.

I have to say that not one of these three characters were likeable in any way and all I hoped to see was the three of them get what they all deserved. Especially Lavender.

The twists that hit near the end of the book really surprised me and made the story for me.

*Thanks so much to @SuzyApprovedBookTours for including me on the audiobook tour!*

Ron Burley is a long-time bachelor with one major rule: never get involved with a married woman. Lavender LeClair is a young, unhappily married mother who has her sights set on him. Against his better judgment, the Mini Mart manager begins a steamy affair with the young beauty, and things heat up rather quickly. But the affair has one person left feeling jilted, and it's not Lavender's husband. Burley's ex-girlfriend, Marta, is determined to win him back with promises of a job that pays double his current salary and other benefits that may help him out of his dire financial situation. Suspicious of the whole situation, Lavender enlists the help of a local psychic who warns her to beware of Marta... and Burley.

Down a Bad Road plays out like a steamy soap opera set in the snowy Adirondack's. The writing style is easy to read and keeps you engaged as you get to know each character and their secrets. It's a slow burn, but those who prefer a fast-paced thriller should not be put off by this book, as it is a definite page turning, guilty pleasure.

Buttner tells a story of suspense that grows from the first word. As the main character becomes entrenched with both innocent and unsavory characters in her world, she thinks her life will fill with excitement, something sorely lacking. Of course, the plot twists much differently from what Lavender (MC) imagines. This author leaves just enough clues and foreshadows a tumultuous plot that leaves readers both rooting for and repelled by Lavender. The writing heightens the intrigue and this reader found herself swishing the pages furiously, wanting to see the next scene. Without spoiling it, I can say Buttner satisfactorily pulls the pieces of this emotionally-taut story together by the last page.

Down a Bad Road kept me turning the pages throughout! The characters are memorable and the plot kept me interested. The author is quite skilled at keeping the storyline moving.

This well-written book surprised me at the end, which really makes a stellar read in my opinion. I loved the characters (even the less likable ones). They are well drawn and detailed, which pulls you right into the story.

Highly recommended for a fast-moving story that will grab you at the start and not let go!

I have never in my life read a book like Down A Bad Road. There is not one character in this book that you can even remotely like or feel sorry for and at the same time you cannot put this book down. I read it in one afternoon and was perfectly satisfied with the ending. It is definitely worth the read. Well done Regina Buttner, well done.

This book had so much potential, but it fell a little short for me. It was way too predictable, there were no plot twists, and the ending was just kind of there. It was starting to get really good, so I couldn’t wait to finish it, but it sort of fizzled out.. and I hated the main character, Lavender.

A psychological thriller full of unlikeable characters and deception. I thought this was a pretty good read; definitely a slow burn, but still keeps your attention. The ending is full of karma and makes the slow burn worth it. The audiobook was nicely done.

When confirmed bachelor Ron Burley falls for the lovely and seductive Lavender, his quiet lifestyle is thrown into chaos. Despite the complications of a husband and ten year old son, Lavender sets out to win Ron's heart. She is convinced that the sweet and caring Burley is the man of her dreams and the only one who can save her from the colorless life she has been living. But his childhood friend Marta has dreams of her own that started more than twenty years earlier. Watching her friend throw his life away on a gold-digging blonde is more than she can bear and she vows to make them both pay.

Down a Bad Road is well-written romp through Northern New York, featuring characters that will make you laugh, while tugging at your heartstrings. Ron and Lavender are so perfectly imperfect that they may just be perfect for each other. 5 stars. I highly recommend!!

TITLE: DOWN A BAD ROAD
AUTHOR: Regina Buttner

A love triangle
A steamy affair
A jilted Ex

Down A Bad Road is a thriller by an RN turned author Regina Buttner. This is a story of an affair gone wrong between two people so opposite of each other for a no strings attached relationship. The story takes a turn and then the characters start to reveal themselves and that was the most exciting part for me.

I definitely felt all the emotions with the unlikeable characters, but I also had a hard time putting this book down. I found the dark humor interesting and the atmospheric setting adding to this suspenseful read.

Steam, simplicity, and seduction lace the pages of Regina Buttner’s dark romantic suspense thriller, Down a Bad Road.

From the opening pages, I was engrossed, not only for the characters, but also for the immersive world we’re thrown into— A psychic on a telephone…. a ravishing but conflicted woman snooping on the stoic man she loves… the chilling elements of New York winter culminating like the bad friends they were never meant to be.

For the right man, the sweet and sultry Lavender LeClaire’s got the looks, the sass, and the charm, but beneath the superficial, she’s jealous, nosy, controlling, and money hungry. Enter the very single, Ron Burley, a non-committal but agreeable, Mini-Mart managing everyman that lives in a double wide with his guns, dogs, and boats— a soft spot for women… on the condition he’s not tied down, and the stage is set for quite the ride.

Lavender’s marriage on the rocks, the Jason Aldean resembling Burley looks the perfect rebound after a quick run in at her hyperactive son’s soccer game.

A straightforward love affair would be too simple, though. Baggage, stories, secrets, and lies insert themselves page after page as the aptly titled tale takes us “down a bad road” when Marta Grolsch, a former high school fling of Ron’s shows up at the worst time setting the stage for what can only lead to the ultimate coup de grace.

Romance. Financial Ruin. Deception. Greed. Twists. Turns. Sandwiches. Shady Loans. Snowmobile rides. Cancer. Spiked coffee. Prying eyes. Life insurance money. Road trips to Pennsylvania. Love trysts at the LeClaire cabin.

What could go wrong?

A novel that explores the frailty of human relationships, the depravity of obsession, and the controlling lust of what we shouldn’t have, Down a Bad Road delivers the goods, hook, line, and sinker.

I was first drawn to this book because of the setting. It takes place in the rural Adirondacks. As a snowmobiler, I was familiar with most of the towns and place’s mentioned. I loved seeing the places that I frequent during the winter months mentioned and I could totally see a picture in my mind of the area as I was reading.

I was totally hooked right away. The book begins with the beginning of a relationship formed between the high maintenance Lavender and the unsuspecting, Burley. Lavender is stuck in a loveless and boring marriage. Burley is your average single guy who is just looking for a good time.

I can honestly say that although I couldn’t put the book down once I started reading, there was not one likable character in it. Perhaps this was the author’s intention. Every one of them was self- centered, dishonest, and quite honestly not very bright. At first I had a soft spot for Burley, who I feel was dragged into a relationship he didn’t even really want, but that quickly changed as the number of bad choices he made kept piling up. When Marta, Burley’s old friend/ ex girlfriend from high school, shows up with a sob story, Burley feels pressured to help her out. This was confusing to me given the fact that they hadn’t seen each other in twenty years. Nevertheless, the introduction of her character to the story adds to the lies and deceit of the plot. Bad people making bad choices is what this book is all about.

Thank you to Black Rose Writing and Regina Buttner for copy and an enjoyable read!

I was sent this book in exchange for an honest review. I’m torn on how I feel about this book. On the one hand, I could not put it down, it was very engaging. On the other hand, none of the characters were likable, but maybe that was a major point to the story. Overall, I couldn’t put the book down, but I was not rooting for anyone lol.
