— a very cozy 4.5 ⚝

this is one of the best cozy fantasy/adventure series out there rn especially in webtoon format. the art is absolutely stunning, i stare at panels for so long before moving on to the next one. i love these characters so much and am always surprised by how distinctive they all are. radish is the best side vegetable ever and lasser is so so delightful. are we getting lasserquinn? we better! im rooting for them SO HARD. they're the cutest.

reading this just makes my heart feel warm and gooey. the setting is so cottagecore and it makes my plant loving heart so happy. the romance between callie and declan is very wholesome. the little chibi designs in random panels are everything to me. i loved going on this journey with these characters. the clever dialogue, the pacing, the art, the characters, the romance, everything is this is perfect.

the only reason this isn't a full 5 stars like the first volume is because it felt a little stretched out and meandering at times. that's literally all. apart from that, this was perfection.

there is so much hilarity in this and combined with a feel-good vibe and a good plot makes this a must read for all adventure graphic novel lovers. this is also a great starting point for those looking to try graphic novels.

Thank you to Clarkson Potter/Ten speed Press and NetGalley for an e-arc of this graphic novel. All thoughts are my own and not influenced in any way.

The second installment of Nothing Special by Katie Cook is finished and I have no idea what to do with the rest of my life! Okay, that's probably overly dramatic and not entirely true, but still. The lack of this story in my life has definitely made my week somewhat less exciting. In such a short time, I have become incredibly attached to Callie, Declan, Radish, and Lasser. And if you read this series, I'm certain that you will, too.

I have to preface this review by saying that if you haven't read season one of Nothing Special, there will be some small spoilers popping up in this review of season two since the major plot is very much centered around important events from the first.

Nothing Special part two picks right back up with all your favorite characters. They've finished their first adventure and now both Callie and Declan have graduated high school with Radish, as usual, by their sides. Lasser is now working for Callie and her father at the Antiques and Oddities shop they run and Declan is still kind of learning the ropes about this other world he's only recently learned he's a part of. But when Declan's injured wing begins starting fires and causing him to faint, the three soon determine that they must set out to the Earth Fairy estate to find out what's wrong with him.

I had so much fun reading this fantastic follow-up to the first season of Nothing Special. It was here, I think, where I really found myself falling in love with the characters and the story. The utterly adorable artwork continues and Lasser has developed a rather amusing love of romance novels—it’s safe to say Lasser is unquestionably now my favorite character—that he is, unfortunately, using as a guide to finding his own romantic partner. All new characters arrive, each unique and wonderful in their own ways. I especially adored Quinn.

All of this to say, the first time I reviewed this book it was based upon the completed “Season Two” of Nothing Special on Webtoon. With this new and updated installment—finally in book form!!—I have to admit that it did not end where I thought it would. I’ve mixed feelings about that if only because I would have loved the entirety of the original packaged up all together. I don’t hate the cliffhanger—possibly because I already know what happens next—and I’m more than happy to have multiple copies of Katie Cook’s brilliant series on my shelf.

So, as I’m eagerly awaiting the continuation of this series, just note that everything below this point is a review of the rest of the “season” and does not actually make it into the official Volume Two.

I received an early copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Cook did a magnificent job of balancing out the hilarity and evilness of the villain just as she did with the one last season. I have to admit I grew rather fond of this evil, especially as he interacted with the other characters. It was just the perfect amount of cute and dark mixed together.

I fully believe that the second installment has expanded and improved upon the world and story that Katie Cook brought in season one. And after how utterly brilliant season two turned out to be, I simply can not wait to see what she has in store for us in season three! Now the only question is how patiently will I be able to wait for it?

Oh my god, this series is bringing me so much joy. I loved the first installment and this one just as much, if not more. The characters are EVERYTHING. I found every moment so wholesome and delightful, and the adventure they went on was perfect. I couldn't stop smiling while reading. Each character is so thought out and developed—Callie is fierce, Declan is so kind and just good for the soul, Radish is a little drama queen, and Lasser has my entire heart. I was laughing and genuinely felt so uplifted after reading this book. I can't believe Katie left us all on a cliffhanger like that, but I loved the art and the writing style so much. Truly a top-tier book.

The art is fun. I enjoy the pop culture references, meta humor, and world. Callie actually has flaws! Yay! The cliffhanger felt too abrupt. I'm not even sure what happened. The story is fun. I'll probably read the next one when it comes out.

There's a lot happening on each page. Dialogs, background comments, cool art. Sometimes it's a bit overwhelming.

I just don't know what to say about Vol. 2 that, by and large, I said about Vol. 1 of Nothing Special, but I wanted to say something. So, yeah, I appropriated a good deal of what I wrote before. If Cook is going to be so consistent that I can't say something new, I have to.

WHAT'S CONCERNING WINGS ABOUT?
Callie is focused on helping her dad around his shop--she's all-in on this life now that she understands more about where she came from and is allowed to leave the town.

Declan is getting more comfortable with his new identity, too. Until he injures his wing and it makes him very ill. Far more so than he'd imagine. So Callie starts looking for a cure--they're pointed to fairy healer. So they set off on a short trip to find one. Along the way they end up learning more about Fairies in general.

LASSER
I felt so bad that I couldn't remember Lasser's name when I posted about Vol. 1, so I made sure to get it this time.

This time his arc focuses on his obsession with Romance novels (they'd probably be classified as Romantasy in our world, but since he lives in Fairyland...they're just Romance). They're basically the prism he sees everything through. Until he gets the opportunity to talk to someone he finds attractive and...well. Let's just say it works a lot better in books.

DECLAN AND CASSIE
If I'm talking about Lasser, I'd better mention these two. But what is there to day? They're so cute. Individually and as a couple.

They've grown as a couple in between books--they know how to read each other, take care of each other--and have fun with each other. (even at the other's expense, in a good-hearted way).

I should have something more to say about them, but I don't. Based on the way this volume ends, I'll have something more to work with after Vol. 3.

A WORD ABOUT THE ART
I just loved it. It's bright, energetic, lively, and adorable. That last one may sound patronizing, but I can't come up with a better word for all of the art. It just brought a smile to my face.

The radish ghost (all the ghosts, but let's focus on it) is one of the cutest things I've seen in months. The little accent bits of art throughout the book featuring similar looking ghosts and non-story jokes are just as good.

I don't know what else to say, but I loved the art.

SO, WHAT DID I THINK ABOUT CONCERNING WINGS?
From the dedication (literally) to the end, and all points in between, I had a blast with this book.

I don't have anything deep, meaningful, or particularly insightful to say here—nor do I have a lot to say (believe it or not).

I thought the story was fun. I less-than-threed the characters so much. The art made me smile—as did the book as a whole. The pages just melted away. It's cute, it's effortlessly charming, it's sweet, and full of whimsy. 'Nuff said.

Your results may vary, obviously, but this just made me happy. I'm in for the long-haul with this series.

Nothing Special, Vol. 2: Concerning Wings by Katie Cook is the 2nd book in the Nothing Special graphic novel series and includes the 1st 25 episodes from Season 2 of the webtoon series. Like Vol 1, it's a fun story and beautifully drawn and coloured. In this 2nd volume Declan begins exploring his fairy abilities and unfortunately burns one of his wings. The group, Muse Callie, demon Lasser and ghostly radish go on a journey to find a fairy healer.

We delve into the past a bit and also discover more about Callie and Declan, especially Declan's heritage as an Earth fairy. The artwork is so rich and colourful that it's easy to miss bits. There are funny little asides included in the story that it makes it so fun to read. Each character is drawn so well and so well-developed, that it's easy to empathsize with them and to enjoy their peronalities. Radish is such a fun character, angry with anyone who dares eat vegetables (difficult for Declan as a vegan) and when he discovers glowing veggie spirits being used to light lanterns, spends most of the story vehemently trying to help them escape.

Along the way we meet some new characters; Quinn, who offers them a ride and on who Lasser develops a crush, Tika a muse who guards a damaged temple in the forest and Tanzi, helping organize Declan's newly discovered grandmother's farewell party. It's difficult not to like everyone you meet in this wonderful story. It's a fun adventure and just all around entertaining. (4.0 stars)

Another fun fantastical adventure by Katie Cook, this time Concerning Wings!
Each page has so much detail and thought put into it. It’s like a mini story within each page. You can tell Cook has thought so much about these characters and the overall world that this story is set in.
All the characters are well fleshed out, original and a lot of fun to follow. Radish and Lasser were of course my favourites. I loved seeing all the spicy romance book titles Lasser was reading throughout the story - so funny! I also loved the inclusion of the Pride / ally flags subtly placed within the pages.
I did see the “twist” / ending coming, but a fun read nonetheless.
Truly a great series for a wide range of readers. Funny, adventurous, clever.

Uggh this book was way too long. From the first 10 pages you knew what the ending was and you had to get through 300 pages of absolutely nothing to get there, just to be left on a cliffhanger after the first 5 pages of interesting content since the first 10....
I think that's the problem with converting webtoons to books, is content that works when it's released over weeks does not work when it's in a format like this. It really needed better editing, so much could have been cut/tightened up and you would have had a much solider story.

But thanks NetGalley for the ARC for a honest review

Unlike the first one, this one ends on a bit of cliff-hanger (the first one was more of a complete story by itself), but since it's mostly about the vibes, it's not that big of a deal. I must say, the author/illustrator does a phenomenal job adding a million tiny details that makes looking at every page a delight. You can tell this is a labor of love.

As usual, Katie Cook knocks it out of the park.

The updated art is really wonderful, and the story keeps getting better. Who knew dead vegetables could be so fun?

Forgot to update this morning! Still enjoyed it, but much prefer the first one. Left us on a cliffhanger, though! Eagerly waiting until my local library has the 3rd one available.

A very cozy read! I love the art so much! I loved the first book, and I'm so glad the sequel is continuing to build this cool world! I love how we got to see more into fairy society and all the rules it has! Can't wait for the next one!

Book 238: Nothing Special, Vol. 2: Concerning Wings by Katie Cook

A YA fantasy graphic novel. I bought the series after I read the first one.

Synopsis: Callie thinks that in the grand scheme of the worlds at large, she's nothing special. With the unexpected addition of friendship and adventure into her life, she's about to find out that she was very, very wrong.

Review: I enjoyed the first book in this series enough that I wanted to read the next two. This book was good at the beginning and the end, the middle dragged along. The ending propelled me to the third book in the series. Cute book, just 50-75 pages shorter please. 3.5⭐️.

Still a fun series, but I felt like not much happened. It seemed as though the whole book was just a setup for future books. The first book had its only story with a complete ending, whereas this one obviously was left on a cliffhanger.

I didn’t love this one quite as much as the first one. It dragged on for a good bit. I enjoyed the characters and artwork but didn’t get drawn into the story as much as I expected.

3.5 stars rounded up.

I love so much how this book features a cute guy named Declan, giving me further excuse to think of my kids' future stepdad Declan Rice (not that I really need any excuses, lol.)

Anyway, Declan Hickey is the focal point of the second volume of the long-running web comic Nothing Special. He and our heroine Callie Benson have graduated high school and have started working at her father's magical antique store with Lasser, the friend they picked up on their last big adventure through the magical world. Working with her dad is Callie's dream come true, and having her half-human, half-fairy boyfriend Declan work with her is icing on the cake. Dad still does most of the sourcing of goods for the shop -- and Lasser most of the actual shopkeeping when he isn't busy immersing himself in romance novels -- but Callie and Declan play important roles in growing both the business and each other's recently discovered magical abilities.

Dad is actually away on a work trip when Declan's injured fairy wing starts shooting off sparks, causing him to collapse with pain. Callie, Lasser and Radish (the vegetable spirit who is Callie's constant companion) shut down the store and take Declan into the magical world in an attempt to find a fairy healer. What should be a simple enough four-day journey to a fairy enclave soon turns into a deeper exploration of who both Callie and Declan really are.

Idk why I'm not a big fan of Callie. She has her moments, but there are also bits where I could cheerfully strangle her for being self-absorbed and annoying. I imagine that, as with many web comics, this is indicative of the main character's personal growth arc. I'm just hoping she does a lot more growing sooner than later!

I'm quite a fan of her supporting cast tho, and only wish there were more women in it. Oh, hunh, maybe that's why I mislike her: Callie gives off big "other girls don't like me" energy. I don't think that's done on purpose but it still weirds me out, and is hopefully addressed in future books. Lol, I just looked up my review of Vol 1, and see that I complained about this there, too.

The art is gorgeous, as usual, tho I feel that the layouts get messier as the book goes on, especially with the dialog bubbles not necessarily falling in a natural progression. I did very much love the little bits of humor sprinkled throughout the backgrounds, even if some of the smaller scribbled jokes were a challenge for me to read: one advantage reading on the web has over a physical book! The extra material in the back was also a nice touch, even if I disagree that the reworked stuff was necessarily better than the original art as it appeared on Webtoons.

This is a solid second installment of the series that furthers the overall plot with several interesting digressions. It definitely shouldn't be read on its own, but is a mostly charming volume that series fans will adore.

Nothing Special Vol 2: Concerning Wings by Katie Cook was published October 22 2024 by Ten Speed Graphic and is available from all good booksellers, including Bookshop!

This was the Most AMAZING! book I have read in a LONG time! The art could have been better at times, I admit, but it was illustrated by the author herself, so that still adds to her talent and the series' specialness.

The characters are unique. The bond between the hero and heroine is very sweet, despite the hero being more feminine and the heroine being very tomboyish -- which is definitely in line with today's time. The vegetables are ADORABLE! throughout the entire book, especially the head little Radish. The book itself is a laugh a minute, and it was VERY hard not to literally guffaw out loud even though I was reading it at work -- which is VERY unusual for this reader. :)

This was an amazing journey! I honestly can NOT say enough good things about this read and will be looking to pick up the first volume SOON as well as continue with the series as it is released! I feel doubly blessed to have won the giveaway, because not only did I win, but this series is just... FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have definitely found an author I WILL be following (have already added some of her other books to my TBR pile), and I am EAGERLY anticipating reading more of this series! It's already made it to my #2 spot of WebToons fandoms, and I now I SO want to see more WebToons series getting their own TPBs! (My TOP, for anyone who may be interested, is Eleceed, and I don't see that changing any time soon no matter how cute, hilarious, adorable, funny, unique, spectacular the read! :) It IS worth noting that it's now shoved Wayne Family Adventures -- from DC Comics, mind you -- to a solid third place!)

Again, I SERIOUSLY can NOT say enough good things about this read, and I can NOT wait to read more in this series! The ONLY thing I am disappointed in is that I've already finished this volume! :( I'm WOWed... I am COMPLETELY WOWED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And sitting here, after a VERY ROUGH day, with a HUGE GRIN on my face!!!!

I've actually got people with whom I'd LOVE to share this book -- but I am NOT risking my copy! No siree! :P

Oh, and I also want to definitely give a nod of respect and gratitude to the VARIOUS other fandoms the author mentions throughout the series. There are several references to Star Wars which is clearly one of her favorites, but there was also a very respectful nod to one of MY favorites, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Thank YOU, Ms. Cook, and thank you for bringing us a wonderful new world that I sincerely hope is around for a VERY LONG time to come!!!!!!!!!

Looking forward to the next volume, and will be picking up your first VERY SOON!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Summary:

Callie's life hasn't exactly been the same – not since the day she crossed the boundary looking for her father. Thankfully, she has a great boyfriend and countless new friends to help support her through these changes.

However, Callie isn't the only one facing changes. Declan may have found out he was a fairy when he turned eighteen – but apparently, his adventure is only beginning! Now, his magic has gone wonky, and they all need some answers.

Nothing Special was originally a Webtoon (It still is), but they're turning the different seasons into volumes.

Review:

Oh yay! I'm so glad the (published) adventures continue in Nothing Special Vol. 2! I really adored the first volume and had questions about where the story would go from here. Now I have my answers...and I want volume 3. I'm so greedy, I know.

Where the first volume of our lovely series focused on Callie, this second volume is all about Declan! But don't worry, he's not alone. All of our favorites are back, plus some new characters. In other words, it's another delightful romp through this fantasy world!

When I say I devoured this book, I pretty much mean it. I read it cover to cover within the hour. I kind of regret that, as now there's nothing left (yes, I know I can read it online). And I have SO MANY questions about what is going on and what will happen with Declan's magic. I need to know!

If you're looking for a cozy middle-grade fantasy with fantastic characters, please be sure to check out this series. You can either read it in graphic novel format (like me) or check out the Webtoon!

Highlights:
Middle-Grade Graphic Novel
Fantasy
Magic & Critters

(Full disclosure: I received a free e-ARC for review through Netgalley.)

It's been a year since teenagers Callie Benson and Declan Hickey journeyed into the Elder Woods to save Callie's father ... and came back with both a budding new relationship, and an honest-to-goodness posse (both Lasser and Radish have definitely grown on me!). Now high school graduates, Declan works at the Bensons' antiquities shop in the magical realm, which Callie co-owns with her dad. Lasser has made himself at home in the broom closet, and Radish is a sworn protector of both "my lady" and "sir."

During an impromptu visit to see Callie's uncle Maddy, a fellow fairy, plant lover, and self-proclaimed professor, Declan begins to experiment with his fae magic, cause his lovely pink wings to spark and catch on fire ("hot wings," lol). As it just so happens, none other than Laurel Poppyfield - the matriarch of the oldest and most esteemed fairy family - is holding a death day celebration, and there's bound to be loads of magical healers in attendance. The journey will be fraught - but it might just lead to more magical self-discovery for both Callie and Declan.

NOTHING SPECIAL continues to be one of the most gosh-darn special comics on WEBTOON. Katie Cook has a delightful sense of humor, and she sprinkles her comics with so many amusing details and pop culture references that it's hard to catch them all. (Seriously, I re-read Volume 1 before starting Volume 2, and I picked up on so many more fun flourishes the second time around.)

I especially love Lasser and Radish, who have both grown and evolved in their own ways. (See, old dogs can learn new tricks! Even in the afterlife!) Radish has come to accept Declan as a fellow Callie-worshipper, and Lasser has moved on from Callie ... possibly to a handsome tradesman named Quinn? Hopefully reading all those fantasy romance novels (courtesy of Declan's late grandmother, rip) will pay off.

I was also delighted to learn that Declan is a vegetarian, and my heart cheered when Radish liberated his fellow plant souls from their captivity in trendy ghost lanterns.

My only complaint? We never find out what became of the spirit of Declan's tree after he sells his grandmother's house! There's a hulking spirit lurking in the background of later panels, so I have my suspicions, but Cook doesn't say for sure.

I enjoyed this one more than volume one which was a weak 4 for me. Oddly enough I'm only lukewarm on Callie who is the main protagonist. If not for her boyfriend, Declan and her friends Lasser and Radish, I'm not sure I would keep reading. I'm thoroughly invested in that trio though and they prop up Callie for me.

Callie is trying to get her dad to make her a full time partner at the store with all the obnoxiousness of a teenager trying to prove they're adult. Declan is busy trying to decide which world he wants to live in. Lasser is sucked into vampire YA romances (and their like). Radish is on a mission to free all the radish ghosts being used to power lamps. I will say the least effective part of the story for me is Declan and Callie's romantic relationship. He seems invested. She seems like she has other concerns.

Until something happens with Declan and his broken wing (see vol 1). He is having bouts of illness and his wing sparks, setting things on fire. They have to find out more about his past and his family life, things he knows nothing about, to see if they can find out what's wrong with him and how it can be fixed.

For his part, Declan is less worried about his wing than he is about the fact that Callie is leaning too heavily into her Muse role and using it to mind manipulate people.

Their quest to find Declan help is interesting and fun, filled with colorfully characters including a temple fairy and a handsome traveling vendor (who cements Lasser as bisexual) This volume does end on huge reveal with a cliffhanger. Sigh (but that said this thing is a meaty volume, if it went on any longer it would be like lugging around a text book).

The art is great, love it. Who knew I could get emotionally invested in a silly radish? I'm looking forward to volume 3

First, thank you NetGalley and Clarkson Potter/Ten Speed Press for providing an arc of the book. This book will be released on 22nd October 2024.

Nothing Special Volume Two by Katie Cook is a delightful continuation of the enchanting Webtoon series that fans have come to adore. This installment picks up with Callie, Declan, Lasser, and Radish embarking on a new adventure filled with magic, mystery, and a deeper exploration of Declan’s fairy heritage. After their previous adventure, Callie hopes for a peaceful life helping her dad in the antique shop and spending time with Declan. However, when Declan’s injured fairy wing starts causing unexpected magical outbursts, the group sets off on a quest to find a healer.

Their journey takes them to new and whimsical places, and they meet fascinating characters along the way, all while uncovering more about Declan’s true identity and connection to the fairy world. Katie Cook’s artwork is as stunning as ever, with vibrant colors and charming details that bring the magical world to life. The character dynamics are heartwarming and humorous, with Lasser’s newfound love for romance novels adding a delightful layer of comedy to the story.

The relationships, especially between Callie and Declan, are wholesome and endearing, making readers root for them even more. Despite being a bit stretched in places, Nothing Special Volume Two is a cozy, feel-good read that beautifully balances humor, adventure, and emotional depth. The cliffhanger ending leaves you eagerly anticipating the next installment. For fans of fantasy graphic novels and Webtoon series, this book is a must-read that will leave you with a warm, fuzzy feeling.

Hitsi!! Siis pakkohan kolmas kirja on lukea, koska haluan tietää, mitä seuraavaksi tapahtuu. Sen verran mielenkiintoiseksi juoni meni.

Eli todella ristiriitainen kirja: toisaalta pidin tästä! Mutta samalla juonen etenemisen hitaus turhautti. Toisaalta pidin hahmoista. Varsinkin Lasser, josta on muodostunut kirjanörtti, on yksi suosikki hahmoistani.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.

Nothing Special vol.2 was a 4⭐️ read for me.

After the events of book one, Callie and Declan (and radish) are settling in to working in Callie’s dad’s shop, teasing Lasser about his cheesy romance novels, and spending time with each other. When Declan’s injured wing starts causing pain and starting fires the group must find a way to stop it. What should be a small journey to learn about the faeries and find a healer turns into a whole lot more, and as it turns out, there may be a lot more to Declan than anyone suspected.

I absolutely loved volume 1 of nothing special and I was so excited to read volume 2, but it fell a little bit flat for me. Let’s start with what I loved: The artwork and banter were still amazing, and I loved seeing all the characters interact together. Watching Callie and Declan navigate their established relationship, and seeing the flashbacks as they planned their future was a lot of fun. Lasser’s storyline and the romance novels was so endearing and sweet as well and showed a side of him I really enjoyed. There was beautiful new settings and characters that also made this such a fun read. I just felt that this book had a bit of a pacing issue. Most of the book is spent travelling, which got a little repetitive, and then as the book reaches the pinnacle of the story, it ends. On a major cliffhanger.

While I am so excited for volume 3, and to see what happens next, this book just didn’t quite hit the mark as much as the first one did.
