Army Girls, Being the Guns is the newest addition to Fenella J Miller's Army Girls series.
Ruth Cox is now a trained ginger girl, dedicated to safeguarding our skies from enemy planes to protect our troops. Along the way, she encounters the charming Sam Johnson, but Ruth prefers too keep their relationship casual to focus on her career. Despite Sam's affection for Ruth, their military duties apostate them to different regions as they contribute to the war effort.
I always find Fenella's stories captivating and this one is no exception! The fact that pays off the story we're set in my bone county of Lincolnshire, just 30 minutes from my town, added a special touch. I recommend getting your hands on a copy today.

Fenella J Miller certainly knows how to write an entertaining wartime series and just like her ‘Goodwill House’ series, the Army Girls has also been absolutely brilliant so far. In fact, I think it might be my favourite of hers that I’ve read. The previous two books have been brilliant and this one a great addition.
You don’t necessarily have needed to read the ones prior to this as it works as a standalone within the same series. But the other two are great so if you haven’t read them, I’d recommend.
Ruby Cox, a character we’ve come to get to know, embarks on her journey as a gunner girl and meets the handsome corporal, Samuel, along the way. But can their newly fledged relationship survive the pressures of war?
Right from the start, boarding the train with Ruby, it immediately set you up on a journey you knew you were going to enjoy. I loved the romance element and the development of Ruby and it was thoroughly enjoyable and a fab read. I got more and more invested as I read on and now I absolutely can’t wait for the next instalment.

That stunning cover grabbed me, and the dramatic WWII historical romance between Ruth, a British gunner, and Sam, a handsome sergeant, kept me turning the pages. This was #3 in the Army Girls series which follows Ruth, Grace's friend from the previous series. I've read the first two, but it could be a stand-alone story. On her way to her next post as a Gunner Girl, Ruth runs into Sam. It follows their relationship, from both perspectives as they meet and deal with various issues at their posts.
I enjoyed this installment, which was a little more balance between their relationship and their jobs as they served their roles in the war. I loved learning more information about life during that time, especially slang like everything is tickety boo and their love of tea. It was interesting to learn more about Sam and his upbringing. It felt like the story ended abruptly it would've been interesting to learn more about what happened to them. Overall, an interesting read and I'm looking forward to reading more about the Army Girls. I hope there are some more sequels coming out soon.

Another great addition to the Army Girls series!
While this book is part of a series, it can easily be read as a standalone. There are infrequent mentions of prior characters, but as background, nothing more.
This book centers on Ruth, a feisty woman who continues to work her way through various Army positions and is now a bombadier. This rank puts her above a lot of fellow servicemen and women, and it is during one such encounter she meets Sam. The rest of the story takes place during their relationship and their time in service, as well as some unexpected adventures.
I enjoyed this book, it is well written and moves along quickly, but that doesn’t mean you don’t get invested in the characters. I can’t wait to see what is next for Ruth and Sam!

In Behind the Guns we follow the story of Ruth as she meets Sam and sparks fly. Once again Fenella has weaved a tale of many emotions with facts from the era woven through to make a page turning plot. I enjoy learning little bits and pieces that I didn't know of the era. I feel that this book focuses more on the relationships of the characters rather than the war making it more light hearted. I think Sam is my favourite character of the series so far because he is so incredibly down to earth and such a gentleman. I enjoyed reading this character driven novel and looking forward to the next.

How are we on the third in the series already? I've enjoyed every installment to the series and await each new with baited breath.
I've been on board since the first, so it's been lovely to see the girls' characters develop and come into their own, whilst everything else falls apart as the war still rages on.
The authors writing is descriptive because of her research into the era, and this made it easy to visualise events.
A brilliant wartime romance that's entertaining, enjoyable and was a pleasure to read.

Behind the guns is the third book in this series. This book tells Ruth’s story and how she meets Sam. These books are great as Fenella writes in a way that draws you in so you really get involved in the characters lives during this difficult time. If you like war time sagas I highly recommend these books they can all be read as standalone books but I’m sure you would enjoy the whole series more.

This instalment centres around Ruth and her career choice as a gunner. She meets Sam en route to her new training grounds and sparks fly immediately. Their meeting is fraught with drama which brings them closer together quite quickly. With a war going on they waste no time in declaring their feelings and desire to get to know one another better. The time-period is a good showcase for an old-fashioned romance where love blooms with the anticipation of and the exchange of letters and notes. With Sam and Ruth you really get a sense of the longing they felt and the wish to be stationed near each other so that they would have opportunities to meet. There is never a dull moment when the pair are together as they attract trouble and drama at every turn. I couldn't wait to see how things would turn out for them especially after Sam's family troubles come to light. I was surprised at the abrupt ending as I would have loved to see more of this family drama and learn how Sam and Ruth fared with their change in circumstances. But I loved every minute of this warm and dramatic story.

Whilst this is a good story, it didn't finish as completely as Fenella Miller's books usually do, even allowing for it being a series, there's too many loose ends for me. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the hope that it will tie up some of those loose ends.

What a gorgeous read, loved it and very descriptive of the place and era. You can visualise being there and working with them. The characters are alive and you feel you know them, well worth getting to know them.

Rather predictable and boring
It was alright but so predictable and the way, everything fell in their laps was ridiculous. Also I'm sure Sam could move about on his crutches , other people manage. Not really very enjoyable

Romance in the Royal Artillery
This is a pleasant read. It gives an insight into England during World War II. It also presents the class distinctions in British society. Rhere is quite a bit of British slang and military jargon but it can be understood by a Yank, if you try.

interesting story
Enjoyed it but not as much as the book one. Too much emphasis on Sam and Ruth’s love story and not enough on their position’s within the Army.

Another great read from Fenella Miller in book 3 of the Army Girls series. The focus this time was centred around Lance Corporal Ruth Cox who is moving on to further her army career. On her way to her new barracks she meets film star handsome Sargent Sam Johnson. There is an instant attraction but with the war raging on can their new fledged relationship develop? Like the previous books in the series this has plenty of drama, some fantastic characters, great historical references and knowledge as well as the dynamics of relationships, good and bad. This book doesn’t stop for breath and I can’t wait for the next one!

Army Girls Behind the Guns by Fenella J Miller is a continuation of the story she’s been writing about several young women who enlisted during WWII, England. Ruth Cox was sorry to leave her friend, Grace, with whom she’d trained, but it was time for her to go for additional training and begin her career. On the train she is accosted by a young soldier but rescued by another. She did dislocate her shoulder and hit her head in the mayhem so he helped her with her luggage after he found a doctor on the train. Things progressed from there, through war and misunderstandings. It is a story about the ramifications of doing the right thing, both good and bad.
Ruth was independent, she’d been raised that way, and having a man try to protect her was above and beyond. She found it helpful, though, and accepted help gratefully. She was also learning how to command other young women in a military situation. Watching her growth was fun. Sam Johnson was on track for promotion, as well, and as handsome as a movie star, but a nice, guy: honorable, strong, and brave. For him it was love at first sight. For her it took longer. There were ups and downs for this couple but somehow they managed to stay strong. They were both terrific characters, well-written and interesting. There was no real plot, but a series of hurdles. It was more a slice-of-life novel with people appearing, leaving, and reappearing. Much like real life. It is a fun read and I can’t wait for the next one. Thanks, Ms Miller, for a terrific series!

Fenella J Miller is definitely one of my favourite authors when it comes to books set during wartime. Immediately I find myself engrossed in the story, and in most instances don't want to put the book down until I have finished it. That is exactly what happened with Army Girls: Behind the Guns. Unfortunately, I was ill and couldn't read it as quickly as I wanted to, but I did my best!
This book is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone, but what I love is that characters from the previous book are mentioned and brought into this current book too. So, if like me, you have read the previous book you will enjoy an update on characters from before.
One of the things I enjoy most about this author's books, this one of course included, is that she has the perfect balance of light and dark moments. Just when things start to get upsetting, something happens to bring some light relief, maybe some romance, maybe just something silly. But it makes the books a pleasure to read. I often find that if a book is described as heartbreaking I don't want to read it. But I know with this author I might have a broken heart but I will always end up smiling at the end of the story!

Ruth is always up for an adventure. She boards a train to next assignment retraining to on a mixed artillery site as a range finder. The military personnel are packed in like sardines and yet she meets a man, Sergeant Sam Johnson. Life gets very interesting from the moment the train starts.
The characters are confronted with many challenges. It was quite thrilling to read and the unexpected that occurred left me stunned. I was never bored. But other emotions were experienced. Sam and Ruth are put in various awkward situations together and separate.
I found myself irritated with some of the characters. I had hoped they would get what they deserved. People behind the scenes seemed to be pulling the strings for Ruth and Sam. It was like the world or those in power were against them or wanting to get rid of them in order to protect themselves.
If you like a romance that has a lot of bumps a long the way you; will want to grab this story. Sam and Ruth definitely find themselves in a lot of situations. The characters are confronted with many challenges. It was quite thrilling to read and the unexpected that occurred left me stunned. I was never bored. But other emotions were experienced. Sam and Ruth are put in various awkward situations together and separate.
I found myself irritated with some of the characters. I had hoped they would get what they deserved. People behind the scenes seemed to be pulling the strings for Ruth and Sam. It was like the world or those in power were against them or wanting to get rid of them in order to protect themselves.
If you like a romance that has a lot of bumps a long the way you; will want to grab this story. Sam and Ruth definitely find themselves in a lot of situations. I can't stop thinking about what could happen in the future. I hope there is another so that I can find out what happens to many of the characters.

In the third book in the Army Girls series, readers follow Ruth as she embarks on training as a bombardier during World War II. Picking up where Grace’s story left off in the previous books. Meeting Sargeant Sam Johnson sets a wrench in her plans as Ruth has no intention of falling in love, but their connection keeps drawing them together -- as do circumstances on and off base. The war and themselves are the only things keeping the couple apart, and they must choose where their relationship will go. With charming characters and a fun dynamic between Sam and Ruth, Miller’s latest novel is an excellent continuation of the series. Ruth is a fun and complex heroine, and her excellent capabilities as a bombardier make her a fiery ATS officer. Miller has once again done a masterful job creating the setting and historical context for this novel with her attention to detail and the historical activities of the ATS. A combination of great characters, detailed setting, and a fantastic plot, Miller’s latest book is a hit and her fans (and all other historical fiction fans) are sure to enjoy the third Army Girls book and the progression of Ruth and Sam’s relationship.
