Erik Burnham is a Minnesotan writer and artist that first broke into comics with a series of humorous short stories in the Shooting Star Comics Anthology. These stories featured his original creation, Nick Landime, and culminated in a one-shot: Nick Landime vs. the World Crime League, published by Shooting Star in 2005.
Off and on, in this same time period, Erik also produced a short run of an online strip, The Down Side, until technical issues wore him down. He aims to return to the strip one day.
In 2007, Erik found produced work for two other anthologies – a short humor piece for History Graphics Press’ Civil War Adventures #1, and a horror story for Gene Simmons’ House of Horror #3, produced by IDW Publishing.
This lead to several other projects for IDW, up to and including his critically acclaimed run on the ongoing GHOSTBUSTERS comic book.
Erik has worked on other projects not related to comic books, and hopes one day to share those with the public at large. In the meantime, he still lives quietly in Minnesota; any rumors about this being because he’s completely afraid of the forty-nine other states (and Canada) remain unverified at this time.
I did want to give this book 3.5 stars as it is the book I have enjoyed the most in this series. The nostalgic cartoon art gets me every time. The stories in this volume are pure filler, I hope leading up a main event somewhere.
The turtles must fight demonic vilans on Halloween, showing their fears (that are not that scary). A robot using the law against them, and a bored cosmic powered imp. All the while, Shredder is collecting what he needs.
The best part of this book is the characters breaking the fourth wall and making fun of the series, plans, and plots themselves. I do have to say it was also good to see yhe turtles actually punching and kicking things. This is a gag issue/book if the series is not cancelled. I hope I get the payoff. Can we have some more ninja in the next book, please!!!. The book finishes with a varient covers gallery.
Another great volume with the usual 87-inspired whimsical turtle adventures. The characterizations are pretty good, and there were some varied villains, though there was a continuation of part of Shredder’s plans from the previous volume that was interrupted by a couple of random filler plot points with a couple of mjnor side villains (the imp-like creature Ogg and Wingnut & Screwloose).
Really loved both Dan’s and Sarah’s art styles, though I do like Sarah’s more expressive turtle expressions. (Some side characters looked great in both styles, of course.)
Overall, the usual more light hearted adventures of the Ninja Turtles with a bit of a continuation of the Shredder & Kraang plot from before, which seems to still be going on for future issues.
I love these light hearted, but earnest turtles, and always I enjoy reading their adventures. :)
I love these TMNT Saturday Morning Adventures comics. Having not long watched all 10 seasons of TMNT87, Burnham absolutely nails the tone and humour of the show (and don't think I don't see those lovely little Pinky And The Brain POITS, sir).
I absolutely adore Myer's artwork; they're so playful with facial expressions and it really evokes that Saturday morning cartoon feel. There was only one issue of Schoening's art here, but I've banged on before about how much I love that. It's a little closer to the Turtles of S1, and I really enjoy that about it. (Check out his Ghostbusters stuff if you haven't before, it's a delight!)
Rounded off with lovely bright colours from Delgado and top notch lettering from Dukeshire, SMA TMNT is a must-have for TMNT and comics fans.
This might be the most fun of the three volumes. Having seen a discount Xenomorph on the show, the faux Freddy Krueger (named Eddie) feels like a route they would’ve gone. Though there’s an added meta layer with there being a copyright lawyer ghost who sets limits on Eddie. Donatello tells a groanworthy pun. The election stuff feels kinda topical.
